Dr. Ormont explains how damaging the boring, underpaid "day job" can be for artists over the long run, and how IT IS POSSIBLE to find work that sustains financially and emotionally without draining creative energy. The book is motivational but also has practical information on resume-writing, personality tests, launching a career change, etc. Even if you aren't a "creative person," this book can truly help you to change your thoughts about making a living, and therefore, your life.

Excellent book for the recent graduate or a seasoned pro making a career change. It is insightful and easy to read. The workbook type exercises are a wonderful tool that allow you to revisit goals and objectives. Easy to understand and it isjust what I needed for making a significant career change. This would be ideal for someone making the transition from college to the working world. This should be required reading for all newly hired employees from Fortune 500 companies to the smallest start-ups!

The interactive CD Rom shows several great interviewing techniques that are from real world situations that a person going to a job interview should expect! Some of the questions were identical to the ones I was asked in a recent interview! Thanks to this book, I knew what to say!

Excellent!

An essential resource!

Review Date: 2001-06-29
I read this book because I was considering a career in the cosmetology field and wanted to know the basics. This book has it all, from descriptions of the day-to-day job, to education and certification information, interviews with people who actually do the job, tips for how to write a resume and interview, etc.

I think this book would be great not only for career-switchers like me, but also for parents of children who are thinking about getting into cosmetology, and guidance counselors. It does reinforce that above all, cosmetology is a BUSINESS. Even though everyone who was interviewed in the book loves their job, they said that if you want to be successful it's not all about being glamorous and gossiping all day playing with products.

There is plenty of information all in one place about how to get started, including Web sites and telephone numbers. After reading it, I was excited and went to visit a local beauty college, something I never would have done before.

Thank you to the author

Nobody thought I should go into cosmetology. They said I would never finish the classes. They thought I should work at the grocery store where I was a cashier and just keep on there until I got to be a manager or something. But that isn't what I wanted to do. A friend gave me this book and after I read it I knew for sure that was what I should do. So I am still working at the store but only at night. In the day time I go to beauty college. Pretty soon I can get out of this grocery store and do what I want!

Mr. Jackson did excellent research for this book. I have numerous ancestors mentioned in the book and even had a picture of one that I had never seen before. Anyone interested in the history of the Western Mt, Idaho and Eastern WA area, will need to read this book. I hope that the Author publishes more material from his research.

Found Heritage Through Review

From the book, I found out that the Metis of the Pacific Northwest formed many communities in that area. My great-grandparents were born in Walla Walla, WA. and we were told that they were French- Canadian and "Black Irish". I read that in Walla Walla, is where they founded communities and that they hid there ancestry and called themselves French-Canadian. So, on reading this, I found out that the missing part to my full heritage was actually a mixture of French and Native American Indian. I owe a great gratitude to Mr. Jackson. Thank-you!!! Sean

Great balance of idealism and practicality
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-12-26
As a writer on career issues, I have read dozens of career books; this is one of the very best. Author Sydney Rice distingushes herself from the hordes of career and life coaches in the world, many of whom, as a Web search will show, sell new-age snake oil with their unproven processes and their expensive tapes, seminars, and coaching contracts. A smart, experienced executive coach, Sydney, by contrast, offers a rare blend of idealism and practicality. Through a comprehensive but not overwhelming process, she shows the reader how all of one's life experiences can and should be used to make change and to reach one's full potential. It's especially inspiring for those making change at midlife, but it's applicable to any age. For more on her approach, see Sydney Rice's Web site at www.thepaperroom.com.

Chui -- Bruce Wood & Lou Hallamore
Having hunted Leopard with Lou Hallamore I can highly recommend this book. The system and methods used By Hallamore are highly productive, but as most readers will be hiring professional hunter the content of the book is a accurate look into what leopard hunting is truly like. A classic for the African hunter to enjoy and learn the from this highly qualified big cat expert.

I made two hunts for leopard in South Africa and Zimbabwe without success. I got a copy of this book, and Bob's your uncle I got a leopard on the third outing.

PH Lou Hallamore is known as Mr. Leopard, and is reported to spend more time in leopard blinds than most people spend in movie theaters. He developed his BOB systematic approach hunting leopard, and I can testify to it working. Author Bruce Woods is a writer and hunter, and he includes some background on his development of the .400 Pondoro cartridge.

The book is clearly written, and includes drawings and many photos to illustrate the information given.

If you want to hunt leopard successfully buy this book and go hunting.

The Title of Deborah's book, Coach Yourself to a New Career, could also have been titled Coach Yourself to a New Career and a Life.

Deborah Brown-Volkman gives some VERY thought-provoking questions in "Coach Yourself to a New Career."

Chapter Three contains a very profound sentence: "If you already cherish silence as a secret weapon, you're very fortunate."

Pages 38-39, Listening to Your Inner Voice, especially hit home with me because we need to listen to our dreams and our heart.

The Testimonials in Chapter Five on pages 57-58 and Putting Your Fears at Bay on page 58 are some of Mrs. Volkman's most powerful parts of her book. She poses the question of what your inactivity due to supposed fear has cost you.

What also is great about Deborah's book is that she adds some personal signs from the Universe that she WAS doing the right thing, such as the poem that she found in a gift shop in New Mexico while on vacation with her husband (page 72). She said that she knew that the poem was meant for her.

Brown-Volkman is also very pragmatic in her techniques to find a career (and a life) that you love.

She gives the reader a sense that our successes are a team effort on page 84 and that it IS okay to ask for help.

After being successful, Mrs. Volkman insists that we should share our gifts with the world on page 88. She is absolutely right on with the sharing concept.

Insistence on sharing our talents is also present among Brown-Volkman's colleague, Cheryl Richardson, who has also stressed the need to share our gifts and unique talents with the world.

Finally, Brown-Volkman includes five of her bonus articles from various publications. As a writer myself, I have seen some of her very well written articles in the Wall Street Journal and on several websites such as 6FigureJobs.com. I was very pleased to see some of her articles in the book.

I spent endless hours looking for a job once I graduated from college. A few times I wanted to give up and just stay home. But a college friend of mine told me about this book and my luck changed. I revised my cover letter and resume and the next thing I knew I got three interviews and three offers. Thank you Bob for helping me land the job of my dreams!!!

This book was my savior during my job search as I was preparing to graduate from college. Every book I looked at for help on resumes was designed for someone who already had professional work experience. This book shows you how to take your part time college jobs and recreational experiences and turn it into intensely desirable stuff. It shows examples of resumes by college major, with infinite examples and explanations. It was so successful for me, in fact, that I now buy it as a present for all my friends when they graduate and head into the work force.
