If you fish or love eating fish this is a MUST own book

Medical research shows that fish in ones diet that is rich in the omega oil is very important, and fish has less negatives as far as fat and cholesterol and is almost fool proof as far as cooking goes and this cookbook would be an asset in any good cooks library. The recipes are easy to follow and the photography and graphics are wonderful. But I have come to expect that from The Hunting & Fishing Library series and I recommend all the books they produce.

Not only will you learn how to safely handle fish and store or freeze it but you will learn that there are bad ways to cook fish that in essence probably is the biggest reason some people try fish and never want it again. There are simple recipes for day to day use and some excellent ones for when company is due for dinner.

I wager that a fair number of anti-fish eaters will rediscover the pleasure of fish (my favorites are salmon and trout) once they savor the recipes in this book. And if you have someone in the family who loves fishing, this makes a great gift.

Great recipes and techniques for cooking fish.

As a CEO of an executive search firm, I have interviewed professionals for 13 years. I have seen too often highly educated, successful people flop on an interview due to the trauma of a firing or unexpected layoff. To all those readers I urge, PLEASE read Martin's book!

a hunting method with principles explained

Review Date: 2008-09-27
The other reviewer is dead on in his support of this excellent book. When I first started hunting blacktail deer here in western Oregon in the early 70s I was clueless about hunting. What little I knew was from people who were little more than road hunters, rarely venturing into the woods. I was determined to learn the "how to" of hunting--in the woods--and not rely on luck. Mr. Sell answered that need by presenting a sensible method based upon a number of sound principles. First and foremost I learned (to my surprise) that I did not have to sneak thru the forest as silent as a cat. In the heavy cover of western Oregon, the ground covered with brittle, decayed wood and patches of knee-high "salal", it's impossible to move silently. It was a revelation to read that deer "are not noiseless" and so the trick is not to eliminate noise, but to move in such a way that your noise sounds like a deer. That means staying on deer trails, into the wind, moving slowly, and stopping frequently. When you do occasionally snap a twig or a branch, just remain still for a time. Using that technique, which took me years to develop, I have been able to approach deer close enough for a carefully-aimed shot at close range, using a 30-30 with a peep sight. Francis Sell promotes a method that resonates strongly with me: integrating the "woodland lore" that our ancestors used thousands of years ago. By this I mean paying attention not just to wind direction but also to such things as how extremes of weather affect deer behavior (in hot weather they like to hang out in the cool creek bottoms, just like you would if you had to wear a fur coat), their preferred browse plants, how wind direction changes due to heating and cooling, alarm calls of birds and squirrels, and the system of trail networks for feeding, bedding, and travel routes, etc. This is about an actual technique of deer hunting, of "knowing what you're doing" in the woods. I should mention two other helpful books on blacktail deer hunting. They are "Blacktail Trophy Tactics" by Boyd Iverson, and "Hunting Blacktail Deer-an Oregon Perspective" by Louis Terkla. These books also emphasize attaining basic knowledge of deer habits and ecology. All three are far more about learning how to hunt than what caliber (or bow weight) to use.

A Classic Deer Hunting Guide

The Art of Successful Deer Hunting (ASDH) is a re-publication of Francis Sell's previous book titled, "The Deer Hunter's Guide." I have both copies, and the books are identical, from the pagination down to the index. The only differences are the cover, artwork, and titles.

There are thousands of "how to" books on the market about hunting and shooting, but Francis Sell is one of the few authors who not only knows the sport of deer hunting--he can teach it. ASDH is a book which tells you--from clothing and firearms to tracking and equipment--how to hunt, what to bring, and what to wear. He doesn't get into issues that change from state to state, but concentrates on practical steps that every hunter can use. For example, how many guides have you seen that talk about thermal flow these days? Mr. Sell was doing it by 1964. Another great example is his discussion of how to follow deer trails slowly and carefully, or where to select a stand location.

I would say that one of the most impressive discussions in Sell's book (books?) is his description of choosing a firearm. He concentrates, like a natural gun bug, quite a bit on cartridge selection, but he carefully emphasizes the need for the rifle to fit the user in stock fit, weight and balance--items that often go overlooked in today's "one size fits nobody" marketing.

Without going through the entire index, I'd like to conclude by saying that Sell's advice is literally timeless. The advice he gave in the (original) 1964 edition and repeated in ASDH is as useful in 2000's as it was in 1964. If you follow his advice, you will have a better chance of getting close to deer. If you like Sell in this edition, I'd also encourage you to look up his articles in Gun Digest, as well as his books on shotgunning and fishing. He is endlessly readable, and tells a great story.

This is definately one of the best books about hunting the whitetail deer I have read in a long time. Very refreshing. If you are looking for a how to kill a big buck book, this is not it. However, if you want to read a book that transports you to your favorite whitetail haunts this is for you. I found myself not only remembering vividly past hunts but also the feeling of those hunts and the characters involved. This books helps get us in touch with answers to the age old question - Why do we hunt? What makes hunting so special? Don't get the impression this is a heavy philsophical read, it isn't. Just a lot of fun. A truly great and entertaining book.

Backbeard the pirate needs a new job. He got into this conundrum when the Pirate Council kicked him out for his insistence on dressing with flair and walking about with a pig rather than parrot on his shoulder. But Backbeard enjoyed wearing stylish clothes, so leave the pirate trade he did. Unfortunately the fishmonger and the blacksmith do not hire him since his qualifications are not well suited for the job. The stinky, brawny ex-pirate does not give up, and he ultimately finds employment in, of all places, a tearoom.

Well shiver me timbers! This uproarious book not only has a clever surprise ending, it also serves as a good vehicle for emphasizing some important concepts in economics related to human resources and searching for jobs. Backbeard's resume on the back cover is a hoot, as is this pirate's willingness to forego his swashbuckling on the high seas for the sake of fashion and style. Backbeard: Pirate for Hire is a unique book that fits well in any children's book booty.

I bought this guide along with a few other company guides from wetfeet and found them to be very useful while going through the recruiting process on-campus. I liked the front section especially, which summarized Bain's origins and mapped it to what it does well now. I also really appreciated the section talking about the culture and lifestyle of folks working at Bain. It helped me figure out what's important and what's not, what I could go for and what I couldn't.

Be The Boss Your Employees Deserve by Ken Lloyd is a solid guide to giving one's employees the best, and getting the best from them in return. From building trust and confidence in one's leadership; to handling problem employees efficiently; and checking up on one's own performance, Be The Boss Your Employees Deserve is a practical, useful, "reader friendly" and strongly recommended guide to supervisory management success.

A Role Model Worthy of Emulation
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2002-06-05
Now that Lloyd has written this book, I hope he will consider writing a book in which he explains "how to be the employee your boss deserves." He writes with uncommon clarity and assuredly has much of value to say about that subject as well. Especially today, everyone involved in a given organization must embrace change, build respect and trust, create and then sustain a "winning atmosphere," prepare for tomorrow, and maximize everyone's potential. In my review of Serven's The End of Office Politics as Usual, I observed that it is no coincidence that the companies which are most highly admired, which generate the greatest number of applicants from among those who work for their competitors, are also the most profitable. One of several reasons is that companies which are both admirable and prosperous have zero-tolerance of what is generally referred to as "office politics." Presumably Lloyd agrees that employees not only need but deserve a supervisor (I personally dislike the term "boss") who simply will not tolerate inappropriate behavior by anyone. Period.

The information and suggestions which Lloyd provides in this book are obviously based on an abundance of real-world experience. He carefully organizes his excellent material within five Sections:

Building the Foundation

Key Concepts and Practices

Everyday Roles and Responsibilities

It's the People

Passing the Tests

Much of my time is involved with the accelerated development of what are sometimes referred to as "fast track" executives. (I refer to them as "tigers" and "tigresses.") Also, I continue to be retained to work with CEOs and their management teams. I presume to include this personal information to make a point: Even decision-makers at the highest organizational levels need frequent reminders of management principles which they may perhaps view as "basic," "obvious," or "simplistic." They need to re-read Lloyd's book at least every 90 days. (NOTE: In the final chapter, Lloyd provides a lengthy series of "Self-Assessment Questions." In the strongest terms possible, I urge supervisors at all organizational levels to answer each of these questions with total frankness and then review their answers on a regular basis.) My own experience supports all of Lloyd's key points. What he does not state but implies throughout his book is that the most effective male supervisors are gentlemen; the most effective female supervisors are ladies. For whatever reasons, civility is among the most important yet least discussed qualities of great leadership.

Think about it. Over the years, which relatives, neighbors, teachers, coaches, clergy, "bosses," and others with whom you have been associated do you now respect most? My guess (only a guess) is that they were those who believed in you and in the potentiality of your abilities, set high standards, then held you fully accountable to those standards, who had what Hemingway once described as a "built-in shock-proof crap detector," cheered you on, provided crisp but fair discipline when you needed it, and -- in all other respects -- did everything possible to nourish your personal growth.

Now there is a role model worthy of emulation!

The author does a great job of describing the skills that students need to be successful in school and in life. The tone of the book is genuine and not preachy and the students that I work with really enjoy the book. The author also describes "soft skills" in a manner that is meaningful and understandable to students.

Becoming the Best Me provides the cure for student reponses of "When will I ever need to know this?" A student-friendly book that helps students recognize practical skills and personal qualities that promote success in the classroom, in the workplace, and in life. Distributed to our 9th grade students, a great resource to increase awareness of "what really counts!"
