I found that the hardest thing about finding a new job or career is knowing where to start and how to get moving in a new direction. This book is set up in such a way that you can read a page or two at a time, get some food for thought and put it down. Then, Later you can do a "fill in the blank" quiz or checklist and get a new piece of information to fit in to your plan. Bit by bit, idea by idea, suggestion by suggestion it gets you moving and that's half of the battle to finding and keeping a job you can love at least it was for me. I highly recommend this book.

I got my first copy of "Love Your Job" after I saw Dr. Powers on CNN and enjoyed his upbeat message for those in a down job market. Since then I have recommended it to many clients in my organizational consulting practice. The exercises and mini-tests (self assessments really)alone are worth the price of the book and are both motivational and practical. I have found this book to be as helpful to an executive or manager as it is to someone new in the job market. I'm on my third copy now because they keep getting "borrowed." Timeless wisdom!

After you know WHAT you want, this book helps with the HOW..

I've been a devout follower of "What Color is Your Parachute?" ever since college...recommending it to folks who are ready to assess (for the first time, or once again) what the best fit is for them work-wise...

This book, Manage Your Own Career: Make it a SNAPP (I'll refer to it as MYOC from here!), is a perfect complement to 'Parachute', after you have found the right job...helping you know what you can do to make your dream work personally fulfilling and successful...because just doing your dream work doesn't guarantee fulfillment and success!

We are all our own 'career managers' and need to do so just like we would manage a project. That is what SNAPP is all about...practical tools to managing projects...and what a worthy project: our careers!

You'll find the parallels drawn in this book quite surprising, including how to build teamwork into your 'project'! It makes perfect sense!

But, instead, of MANAGING our careers, we tend to act as victims of fate and let whatever befalls us (promotions, demotions, layoffs, reassignments, etc.) just happen and go with the flow. This book will give you a whole different perspective and make you aware of things you can do to increase your real value to your organization and maximize your opportunities.

It's easy to read, conversational, and very practical, with lots of exercises and tools. MYOC provides ideas and actual tools (worksheets, checklists, etc.!) for how to get the most out of your career. And if the SNAPP process works for you, check out their other books: Make it Happen! Snapp Your Way to Success in Business and in Life (a true project management 'how to' book) and Career Contuation: Make it a SNAPP (a how to guide for making career transitions: finding a job, starting a business, etc.).

Collaboratively written by Donald J. Hanratty (President, The Career Control Group, Inc.), and Ron Biagi and Teresa Eyres (Co-Founders, ITH - a management consulting company), Manage Your Own Career: Make It A Snapp is a fine, step-by-step guidebook that coaches the concerned reader on how to take charge and manage their career for success. The SNAPP plan (See It, Negotiate It, Act on It, Persist, and Praise the Team) is a straightforward, winning plan to advancement, achievement, and recognition. Manage Your Own Career is especially recommended reading for motivated and career-minded workers regardless of their chosen field of employment.

Career Self-Management...A Clear, Compact, Concise Approach

Review Date: 2002-06-27
At last! In the midst of today's economic confusion and disillusionment with self-serving corporations, along comes a guide for career self-management that is clear, concise, compact, and makes sense. In today's "new world of employment", Manage Your Own Career presents the concept that enterprising employees with focused career aspirations should think of their employer as their "customer." The book presents one approach to successful career management using three essential attributes: an individual managing their own career must be "entrepreneural, excellent, and engaging."

With these attributes as a base and using the SNAPP approach described in this and previous volumes by the same authors, the book proceeds to describe in no-nonsense language how to self-evaluate and how to take action. There are a wealth of practical success tips for reaching one's goals which include the expected tips for resumes and networking. However, to my delight, the authors have a "holistic" approach for the well-being of the reader including such tips as "keep fit" and "be nice to everyone".

With over 25 years in the corporate world, I have written countless business plans, action plans, and quarterly reports. I have experienced a myriad of seminars, conferences, and books with "how to's" for success...however, only the authors of Manage Your Own Career could finally explain to me the difference between "Goals" and "Objectives"!

Many people avoid any connection to marketing because of a lack of understanding. For example, book authors avoid marketing their book because they wrongly believe that is the publisher's responsibility. Ali Pervez has written an easy-to-understand guide for anyone who wants to build relationships and increase their sales.

As you read this book, you will regularly reach for your yellow highlighter to be able to return to the pages over and over for inspiration. I certainly marked my copy as I read it. For example, Pervez writes in the section, Marketing Is Power, "I believe that ninety-five percent of success is about getting the right knowledge, and five percent is about applying it to get things done. But I think it's the last five percent that's the most difficult to do! Why? Because we get involved in so many different activities and are not able to make the priority and focus on what needs to be done." (page 20)

This title is loaded with insight and I recommend it.

I've picked up several good ideas from this inexpensive marketing book, it has reminded me of things I already knew I should do but had forgotten thus providing a great deal in revitalizing my skills.

The author also gives plenty of helpful tips on how to make use of all the traditional means of marketing and implement those in daily life. Be sure to keep a highlighter with you when you read the book so you can highlight the items that apply specifically to your business and refer to them quickly. I truly believe this is not just another book on marketing but a philosophy to build strong personalities.

This book has been very helpful during my transition from the military. It is very clearly written. The checklists, samples, and examples have come in handy, while the personal perspective of the author (her military spouse retired while she was writing the book) made this an invaluable tool. My copy is becoming very dog-earred, a true testimony to how often I have referred to it over the last few months. I'm glad I picked this one up, despite that it's a bit US Army centric, but of course flexibility is the key to air power.

This book is one I am most proud of for the photo's are truely amazing and Marilyn's most beautiful. Milton Greene took some of the most famous photos of the Legend and they are all here for us to enjoy and admire. Not only are the glamour poses here but also intimate moments at home with Marilyn after she became an extended member of the Greene family and lived with them for some time. Some famous and iconic poses as well as some rarely seen. This is a must have!

This is certainly an amazing collection of photographs of Marilyn gleaned from the few years she and Milton Greene collaborated. This teaming of a brilliant photographer with a brilliant subject was perfect. Despite their ill-fated business partnership, the photographs produced transcended the abrupt end of their friendship and some of the most beautiful are showcased in this book. Greene was one of the only photographers to look beyond the movie-star facade of Marilyn and present her other facets - afraid, vulnerable, sad, poignant, and above all more herself than in her studio-produced shots. Although she is not as flawless as in her more glamorous shots, she is just as stunning at ever - if not more so. The highlight of the Greene-Monroe collaboration is the so-called 'Black Sitting', where Marilyn is shot in revealing black lingerie yet appears to be a girl playing dress-up. The only criticism I have is Amy Greene's comments - a touch defensive, evasive, biased, generally unnecessary and offering little real insight into her husband's partnership with Marilyn. Definitely a must-have for any Marilyn fan.

This is a great book for the true Marilyn Monroe fan, sort of like having your own personal album of her best photos. Greene captures many sides of Marilyn including sensual, vulnerable, playful, serious, and just plain beautiful in his exceptional photography. Theirs was clearly a special relationship. The accompanying text is not sensational or gossipy like some accounts can be, and reads more like a personal recollection. This book is not a biography or memoir but is all about the photographer and his subject; and it is fabulous.

I bought this book at the gun store when I bought my first gun (Remington 870). This was the only shotgun book the store had (handguns far outweighed shotguns at this store, after all, I'm currently living in Southern California.) I love the writing style, the man breaks it down it an easy-to-understand way. It's like having a good friend or uncle explaining it to you. Has all the info needed, but he isn't afraid to gently crack wise every few pages. It's enough to keep things lively without distracting from the spot-on info.

Kudos, sir!

This is what our outdoor adventures should be

Review Date: 2008-09-01
This is the second in a three volume collection of short stories written by Gordon Macquarrie about duck hunting and fly fishing in northern Wisconsin during the 30s and 40s. Gordon Macquarrie was a journalist and author for various Wisconsin newspapers who also wrote short stories for magazines such as Field and Stream. He uses an organization called the Old Duck Hunters Association, Inc (the Inc stands for Incorrigible) as his primary literary device. The ODHA, Inc consists of the author and a much older man (the President, often referred to and deferred to as Hizzoner), originally modeled after his father in law, later a local post man. In both cases, the President is much older (and nominally wiser - but more often not). Through these short stories, Macquarrie recounts the adventures and misadventures as the ODHA, Inc travels around Wisconsin in search of trout, ducks, and the occasional muskie and white tail. These stories are outstanding, Willow Creek Press has done a great service reprinting this collection of stories. GM has captured the anticipation and cold of sitting in the duck blind, the camaraderie and competition amongst friends of the trout stream, and some of the unexpected surprises of each outdoor adventure that makes every one unique and exciting. If you've read the first volume in this collection, I'd say that this book is pretty much more of the same. If not, the stories aren't in any particular order, you can just as easily start with this one (a few of the early stories in the first volume give some background on the ODHA, but it isn't really necessary to enjoy this volume). All but one of the stories centers on the ODHA. Each story is only ten pages or so, so several (or even the whole book) can be digested in one sit down, but I'd recommend a more leisurely reading pace though as each story is to be savored. One place that GM returns to again and again is the Brule River in northern Wisconsin. I've never been there, but if it is half as beautiful as GM describes it, I'm sure it is quite a place. You'll be counting the days till opening day of trout season or duck season after reading a few of these stories. Highly recommended.

Maquarrie is one of the greatest writers hunting and fishing has ever seen. He brings to life every story, and you can feel yourself in the blind or on the stream with the ODHA. His stories can be read over and over again, without loss of excitement.

I have read everything he has written that I am aware of. These are not how to books. If you are a hunter and love all the little things that suround the hunter and the sport of duck hunting you will love his books. When I hear his name "Gordon Macquqrrie" I smile. In my mind I have been to his cabin, set infront of his fireplace full of pine knots. I have shot Bluebills in the snow and smiled thinking of his hunts for Bills.
Like Mr. Macquarrie I am a Bluebill man. I started reading his books 30+ years ago before many knew of him. It's a good thing
to see today how so many hunters have come to know him. Many say that Nash Buckingham is the best of the duck hunting story tellers. I have read most of Nash's books and for me he doesn't hold a candle to Gordon. Gordon Macquarri is the best of the best. If you are a meat hunter and care little for the romance of duck hunting maybe you should just read the how to books.

This is the favorite book of my 3 year old son! He not only sings it, but acts it out. The illustrations are very simple, childlike, and a little bit silly. As a teacher, I appreciate the value of the book for its rhyming words, and I think it's sweet that the author dedicated the book to the children who helped him complete the verses (and so dedicates it to every child who reads the book).

Ruark's 'The Old Man and the Boy' is the touching tale of a boy's memory of experiences with his beloved grandfather. It is also a story of a South which is, so very unfortunately, very nearly gone. It's a story not just of jasmine, polite living and fireflies, but of guns and men and the explosion of a covery of quail, glittering in the early morning sun.

It's the story of the training of a boy to be a man in the finest Southern tradition. It's a tale of dogs, shotgun shells and men. It's not, Thank God, politically correct. It's a story of a deep love of nature and a deep love of the people who respect it.

Tom Sawyer with a message and an elder mentor

Review Date: 2008-07-19
The Norman Rockwell paintings of the freckle-faced boy with a fishin' pole on his shoulder or otherwise engaged in play in a rural setting is an American idyllic childhood. Robert Ruark was able to live this life and he sums it up best in the author's note: "Anybody who reads this book is bound to realize that I had a fine time as a kid." No one who reads this book could dispute that claim.
He grew up in North Carolina with his grandfather as a mentor. From him he learned how to hunt and fish, manage the land and resources and even how to treat people. His grandfather's respect for black people and his willingness to stand up for them was a rare thing in North Carolina at the time. Ruark always refers to his grandfather as "the Old Man", but it is clear that it is rendered with deep affection. In fact, the amount of attention he received and the wisdom he learned from the Old Man is something to be envied. Few boys are taught as much valuable knowledge as Ruark was when he was a child.
The story is captivating and comes to a fitting end. When it is clear that the Old Man is wearing down and will die soon, he tells his grandson, "I promise you on my word of honor that I won't die on the opening day of bird season." The last line of the book is, "He kept his promise." This is one of the best descriptions of childhood ever written, it is Tom Sawyer with a message and an elder mentor.

I've meant to review this classic for years: Today's the day. My first copy of this book was a well-worn recycled paperback version, from my mother having purchased it as a gift for my granddad to her getting it back after his death in 1968, to her giving it to me sometime in the 1990s. It's the kind of read that makes you long for the hardcover edition, for all the times you'll reread it in the future.

Buy the paperback versions for gifts (buy several; those you gift with this book will thank you for it vociferously!), but latch onto a hardcover for yourself.

A treasure, I note that several reviews lean toward recommending it for men & boys, but girls, don't let that fool you! There's so much to be learned from this gem -- plus you can share it with others!

Many folks today haven't yet had the fire lit under them to read -- more's the pity. Read this book to those you love that don't read and I'm certain they'll come out the other side understanding why you love to read!
