After a few months as a first year associate at my law firm, one of my former law school classmates told me that their firm had sent its new associates to an etiquette class. I decided that it might be a good idea for me to brush up on my etiquette skills as well, so I purchased this CD and also the Food Scholar Wine Basics CD. I recommend both for new professionals to prepare them for any "dining" situation they may encounter in their first jobs. These situations frequently fall into the "you don't know what you don't know" category of student knowledge.

I, for one, had very little experience in more formal dining situations upon graduating from school. This CD was just what I needed to get myself up-to-speed. It is well-organized and well-presented, covering a number of very specific situations that convey the elements of common sense and consideration that underlie all etiquette.

The author thankfully avoids spending time on how to arrange the seating at a state dinner. What he offers is practical, usable advice on the types of real social interactions that occur in all kinds of business. A very useful CD and well worth the price. Definitely five stars.

I will be graduating from college this year and have started to interview for jobs. I have a decent GPA, am in the career placement office every week for advice, and have spent hours polishing my resume. I thought that I had all my bases covered. Then I started actually interviewing for jobs. I have already had three interviews that included meals and two "mixers" with drinks and appetizers. It was a little overwhelming. I could tell there was an order to things I did not completely understand. A friend recommended this Dining Etiquette CD, so I ordered it. I had yet another meal during an interview after listening to it. It made a big difference. Knowing what to do at every turn during the meal was a confidence booster and I am sure it helped me appear more polished and professional. I HIGHLY recommend it, Two Thumbs Up.

A good etiquette book should sit on every professional's bookshelf alongside "how to win friends" and "7 habits." I purchased this book along with Essential Etiquette Fundamentals, Vol. 2: Wine Selection & Etiquette and The Etiquette Edge: The Unspoken Rules for Business Success to cover all the bases. These books do an excellent job covering the important etiquette skills often overlooked in today's environment. Although often underappreciated, exhibiting proper etiquette signals to others (especially your boss and clients) that you are well educated, care about detail, and have respect for others. I highly recommend these books for anyone new to the business world or for those of us who may need to brush up on the basics.

The last book on CD my wife and I bought was terrible: mens' voices for female characters, etc. And what's the alternative on the radio? Pop music or Howard Stern? I spend twenty percent of my waking life in my car. I might as well spend it wisely. The Food Scholar is easy listening and presented in a way that makes the information easy to learn and remember.

Based upon my experience hiring federal employees, I can tell you that Lily does a great job of explaining how hiring managers think and how to impress them. She certainly helped me improve my own applications in very significant ways. And because Lily has a wonderful sense of humor, her approach is entertaining as well as enlightening!

This book was everything I could have asked for and more. The author knows her subject forward and backward, explains what to do and why and gives insight into the process from personal experience. I have followed her advice and gotten good responses to my applications. Without this guidance, I was lost when it came to writing the KSA's (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) for the application, which is a key aspect of the application. Well worth the money to buy and the time to read it.

"Get Hired!" offers some of the best advice you will find for navigating through the federal hiring process, whether you're already in the system or trying to get into it. Whiteman uses clear language and humor to help people apply the common sense approach she delivers to their own resumes and qualifications statements. I use the book with groups and individuals from interns to Presidential Management Fellows to senior managers trying to break into the Senior Executive Service. The examples and resources are excellent, from building skills and experience to presenting those experiences in the most effective style. She even covers interviewing, negotiating salaries, hiring help for veterans, non-competitive appointments, formatting tips, a glossary and a CD with sample resumes. Whiteman covers it all.

Thanks to Bill's book, I made the career change from being a horticultural consultant for a laboratory to being a technical writer for an ecommerce company in the Silicon Valley. I got serious about my job search in November, finished Bill's book in January, started networking and going to industry meetings, started interviewing with companies in April and started my new job in May. Bill's book was right on the money. I work reasonable hours for a well-managed, successful company. THANKS BILL !

For us "low-techies", this is probably the best book out there to help cross the digital divide and begin a great career in high tech. Not only does Bill detail, in normal language, the industry and how to crack it, but also how to build your career once you're in. Everyone considering the leap into high tech should read this book!

The author's key premise is sound--high tech companies have lots of positions that low tech liberal arts types can fill. The key is how to break in and how to learn the jargon. This book is nuts and bolts, not an elegant read, but quite useful as a "how to" guide. This is for the person who doesn't mind "working up" into a position from the bottom. It's a good guide. Too many folks feel "stuck" in low paying "non-tech" jobs. This need not happen. This book has some good guideposts out.

I went to a seminar taught by Bill in April, and bought his book on the spot.

It is informative even to a person with no computer background, I was a bio major in college!!!

Now I am in software, as a Assistant Product Manager and really exceling, it is true what Bill says, it is the mindset and savvy that will carry you, the technical stuff you can and will learn along the way

I was able to apply the principles in his text in giving advice to ppl on how to get their own tech jobs (advising them to buy the book)

his book is fun to read, inspring, and chalk full on insider stuff it would take yeeeeeeeeeeeears to figure out on your own, frankly, it is one of the best investments you could ever make

I love Jim Corbett, I don't know if any author is better at transporting you back in time & making you feel like you were there. A warning though, once you start reading a Jim Corbett book you will need to find more of his books they are addicting. Also you will be hard pressed to find stories as exciting. This book wasn't as good as Maneater's of Kumaon. If you haven't read any of his books start with that one.

Adventures dont get better than this.

Corbett is a natural writer and combines his knowledge of the jungle with uncanny hunting skills to give us one of the best Indian adventures ever written.

Reading his books is not just following a maneater with a gun - it is a journey into the days of the British Raj where you will be transported into the remote jungles of Northern India, read about the simple people and their unsophisticated lifestyle. There are no villians, no suspicious characters lurking around and nobody to provide humour. You just have village folk trying to eke out a living which is sometimes interrupted by a feline with a taste for humans.

This particular book is about one leopard which terrorised a large region for many years and claimed about 420 lives. To understand what these people must have felt, it must be noted that in those days there were no high security fences, no guns or any kind of technology to track the leopard. Yet the people had to enter the forest to earn their daily bread. There is an unforgettable chapter in the book titled 'Terror' which starts something like this:

'During the day, people went about their lives as usual. Trade and commerce, transport and all other transactions went about their normal way. But as evening approached, there was a marked change in their behaviour. Pilgrims rushed towards their night shelters, businessmen closed shops abruptly and people scurried towards their homes for relative safety. No curfew was more strictly imposed. No orders to remain indoors were observed as faithfully.'

This is one of the books which shows that for writing adventure you don't need weapons or FBI investigations. All you need is a writer with a big heart who loves what he is doing and knows what he is talking about.

Wonderful!

I just purchased a new copy for 12.49 British pounds including shipping to the USA which is just over $21 USD (December, 2003) I don't know why the new/used books advertised on Amazon by private sellers are so expensive.

If it's anything like Corbett's "Man-eaters of Kumaon" it is a masterpiece.

Another excellent book from the corbett library. Its true that fact can be stranger than fiction. And no where is it more evident than in the story of the maneater of rudraprayag.

Corbett is out to kill this very clever and wily old leopard in the second half of the 1920's. The leopard is believed to have made its debut as a man-killer following the influenze outbreak of 1918. Corbett hunts this killer over two years. In an intense battle of nerves between the best shikari that ever was and the wily leopardus, corbett's life hangs by a thread many times. On one dark stormy night, robbed of his defenses, he makes his way back to the village after a failed attempt in an experience that he terms his scariest. Another time the leopard snatches a goat right under his nose and gives him a run for his money! All and many illustrations of man's utter helplessness when a clever maneater turns against him.

In the end, corbett suceeds in putting a bullet where it truly belongs - in the maneater - to end its career. In true corbett fashion he has a soft spot for the old dead leopard, which gave him such a sporty fight. I am sure they both met again in the happy hunting grounds!

A wonderful book by a wonderful man.

No other shooting book compares! Brian provides a fundamentally different approach to improving your shooting speed and accuracy. This book goes way beyond the fundamentals of shooting including grip, stance, trigger control and sight picture (although he provides excellent pointers on these concepts). This book will take you to a new level of shooting, well beyond what you may have thought possible, and you will do it with a new way of thinking about shooting.

Practical Shooting - PHENOMENAL

Review Date: 2008-02-11
This book is initially difficult to read; I enjoy challenges. Especially mental ones and Brian will challenge you to challenge Self. NO book approaches shooting in a more cerebral way. Well, that's not true because he'll move you beyond Thinking about what it is you wish to do and simply Doing it without the Mind "thinking" away and slowing you down.

I cannot possibly over sell this book (just like Surgical Speed Shooting) and I push the book to all shooters who fancy themselves as "serious" about competition or life skills with a pistol.

I find the book difficult to put down now and reading it is "a breeze" once you get to the point that you've internalized his definitions. I rather enjoy studying the Mind so it took a day or two before all fell into place and I breezed through it after that. In fact, I breeze through it twice a year. It's one part of my "shooting bible" which must be studied dutifully.

If you decide you don't like his book I'll buy it from you and cover the shipping. It's that good. I don't think you'll find a better endorsement than that. I'll add it to the other three copies - two of which are worn out...

Without a doubt, the best book on competitive shooting.

I've shot with Mr. Enos (hell I even beat him once, with a ton of luck), and I kinda grew up with him as a shooting guide. This book should be called "Practical Shooting: The Bible." It covers the fundamentals early on, and no not the fundamentals such as how to grip the gun or how to draw, but how to *think* and *view* shooting through your awareness and thought processes. This is the major difference between Enos and all the other greats, even TGO himself. Enos knows how to *think* shooting, and this book helps you get there too. I would recommend it to the D class shooter just getting started, the C class working on moving on up, or the M looking to perfect the art.

I'm picking it up just to refresh my skills, it's one you can read every few years and still learn something from it.

Great, nitty-gritty book on how to get that next job

Keith Wheelock, Skillman, NJ

Mr. Nielsen has written a marvelous book on the nitty-gritty of how to devise a job search strategy, then, step-by-step, how to customize your search to maximize your opportunities. Though aimed principally at the seasoned professional who is seeking a new job, it is also valuable for the neophyte who can benefit from Mr. Nielsen's uncommonly practical advice.
Perhaps most helpful were over 40 sample cover letters and 50 resumes of diverse thrusts and flavors. Anyone would benefit from this Dutch uncle 'getting started' advice together with the detailed 'what to do' and 'how to customize it to your personal situation' that Mr. Nielsen shares from his decades of experience as a human resources manager and human resources consultant. Buy it, get your job offers, then turn to Chapter 7 to negotiate your best compensation package.

Job Search ideas

Niels Nielson covers some job search ideas that are very good and not commonly understood or talked about. Anyone who is in job search mode would certainly gain more than one good practical tip from this book.

Niels hits the nail right on the head when he says there is no one right way to get that job. But some of his ideas will surely help everyone.

Samples: 1) your search is a marketing effort. This is little understood by many job seekers and a very useful concept. 2) I had breakfast the other day with a job seeker & I mentioned he might want to get to the local chamber of commerce and other fixed networking functions - a very good idea that Niels covers in this book too - I've never heard anyone else mention chambers of commerce 3) having your 30 second statement prepared in advance 4) approach your job search like a job and work at it. 5) saving job search receipts for taxes

Lots of good model resumes, cover letters, other snippits too. A definite good read - join this with the book "60 seconds & You're Hired" (Robin Ryan); you'll surely have a better handle on getting the right job.

A Unique Job-Searching Process

Review Date: 2003-02-03
This is an excellent book on how to find the ideal job and career. It takes a unique view of the process, showing how a job search is like a start up business. The book is in fact a business plan for an "interim entrepreneur" that can be followed until that one ideal customer is landed, the employer. It even has a last chapter on "Customer Relations Management" about how to thrive in your new job.

It also has a full chapter on that most crucial part of the job hunt, compensation. It tell you how to "price" your services, and how to consider and negotiate salary plans, incentives, stock ownership programs, employee benefits, human resources policies, and perks. The book shows you how to wade through all the different compensation plans and to negotiate the best deal.

Besides that, there are 40 cover letters and 50 resumes that the author prepared for clients in a wide variety of occupations. They are so good, they are worth the price of the book alone.

Highly recommended!

Princeton Management Consultant's Guide to Your New Job is an important book to add to your library if you're out of work. The author provides concrete advice on how to find a job, using the effective analogy of the job hunting process as an entrepreneurial venture. He guides you through each step of the process, providing concrete details and practical advice. His many years of consulting experience are also apparent because of his obvious compassion for those who have lost their jobs. He is also able to use examples of real-life experiences to illustrate important points. Finally, the abundant examples of resumes and cover letters are very helpful.

I have read a lot of job search, resume-writing and networking books in my time. I have given seminars on all these topics; and I think this approach gets to the heart of the matter! Why didn't anyone write this before? Well, most of us don't want to think about "selling" ourselves. The job search must be strategic as well as tactical. Considering the stress of looking for a job, thank goodness Niels Nielsen gives the reader a step-by-step plan. The approach is unique, focused, and immediately useful. There are many parts of "Guide to Your New Job" I thought were powerful. Niels includes a large variety of cover letters and resumes that model creativity and assertiveness. Well-written by jobseekers, these examples are excellent guideposts for the reader. I really like the way questions were used in the cover letters. And what a great idea, "the 15-second elevator speech". All I can say is, this book should be in the hands and heart of every jobseeker.

After reading several post-college graduate books, @ the Entry Level finally stops beating around the bush and tells you how it really is and how to succeed after college in the jungle known as 'the real world.' Anyone in my position (fresh out of college, has a job, has no idea how the real world works) should pick up this book immediately. Michael Ball relates to our position and generation very accurately and convincingly as well. Teaches you the politics of business and how to sell yourself for future promotions and growth. Much more than a post-college book, I recommend it for anyone trying to get a competitive edge and understanding for themselves in the workplace.

Anyone who's in (or just about to enter) Corporate America and hasn't read this book is at a serious disadvantage! Not only does it show you how to work more effectively with managers and seniors, but it even talks about promotions and career paths, early decision-making, work - life balance, and how to build a personal "brand."

Plus it really gets you to think about the deeper meaning of your career: where it's all leading, how money fits into the equation, and what you're going to want to look back on your life and see. The author obviously cares about his readers, and that makes it even more worthwhile. Truly an informative, provoking (and controversial) book!

I do think I have found that true calling already thus this part was not interesting for me. I was fresh out of grad school when I got this book and despite having some work experience I did not think I had come even close to starting to figure out office politics etc. This book has not offered me many new insights and I still feel I am at the starting point re: survival and success. If anyone has good tips on books that might be more helpful, please let me know.

I've been in the workforce for almost twenty years, and am only now going back to college, but I felt like this book was written just for me. It talks about direction, and uses words we don't see enough of - like Passion, and Value. After working in customer service for so long, every word he said rang true. It is obvious he has studied many succesful people (from the quotes and anecdotes he sprinkles throughout the book) and is trying to pass on what he has learned from them while emphasizing that most important third dimension of work - satisfaction. (The first and second being Money and a Benefit Package *wink*)

While the theme is a serious one, the book is a great read. Michael's style makes you feel like he's right there in the room telling his jokes in person. The intimacy really worked for me. I'm glad I picked this up - I might even change my major!

This is a very good book. She really does give you all the inside secrets in the world of HR. So much eye-opening info. I couldn't put the book down. I am recommending this book to my friends and family members. She talks about companies "secret criteria" when it comes to hiring and why they will never tell you the real reason you didn't get the job. She also talks about resumes that stick out and help get the interviews. She talks about why you should never quit your current job in order to spend more time applying for jobs. Really great info. This is the perfect book for someone who has been applying everywhere and can't understand why s/he has never received a phonecall or only receives rejection letters.

This book was worth its weight in gold for my husband's job search. After two long years looking for a job, my husband was incredibly frustrated and discouraged. He was an experienced legal professional with excellent credentials, but employers just didn't seem interested in his resume. He knew that he had to be doing something wrong but had no idea what. Then he got Cynthia Shapiro's book. Talk about results! He read the book in one weekend - applied all of the suggestions - and suddenly everything changed. Now he had interviews, call-backs, just an amazing amount of interest from potential employers. He quickly landed his dream job, and got a substantial salary increase in the process. (Amazingly, even now, companies are calling him with requests to schedule "back-up" interviews in case things don't work out with the company that he ended up joining.... can you imagine??) I only wish my husband had this book at the beginning of his job search. Folks, if you or someone you know is looking for a job, Cynthia Shapiro's book is the real deal. It is an amazing resource for job hunters, and IT WORKS.

Outstanding! I read this book from cover to cover on the same day. It is very easy and fun to read. The content of this book is eye-opening and the author has done a great job to share the insider secrets from preparing the resume/cover letter, interviews, offer negotiations, things to pay attention after being hired. I also highly recommend her other book "Corporate Confidential", the author listed the most common mistakes ones ( employees and managers) can make and how to avoid them. Excellent job!

I saw Cynthia Shapiro on CNN promoting "What Does Somebody Have To Do To Get A Job Around Here?" and really liked her warmth and articulacy. Needed a job, bought the book. What a fast, entertaining, and profoundly helpful read.

All the nagging questions I had about a process I didn't understand--even some issues I didn't know existed--were laid out in a very clear, friendly, and enjoyable format.

I had read some reviews on this site saying that Cynthia Shapiro does free consultations and even calls back on the same day. I found myself in a confusing situation during a job offer (a company I like, but at a much lower rate than they advertised). I left a message for Ms. Shapiro and she called back promptly, gave me a pro's perspective on my situation given my salary history, and some great ideas for negotiating nevertheless.

I am so happy with this product and very much hope to have the chance to work with Ms. Shapiro in the future.

Very good book but lacks good negotiation advice

I agree with the other reviews and found it a great, easy-to-read, realistic read. However, I found the advice on negotiation overly simplistic and optimistic. In corporate America one can't expect to meekly ask for a small amount like $3000 and expect to get a nice "yes" in return. According to other sources I've read, employers often budget 20-30% more for candidates than they initially offer, but hiring managers have no incentive to give that money away unless the candidate convinces them otherwise. This should be done in a cordial manner, but it takes backing up your argument with facts and a list of qualifications. It might take time and will be uncomfortable. This book doesn't provide guidance that will help many job seekers get the salary they want or deserve.

I recently reconnected with the author, an executive recruiter who placed me in my most recent executive position back in the year 2000. Alan had made a lasting impression on me, so it was natural to contact him now as I started my new career search. After all, I have never been better coached and prepared by an executive recruiter to win a desired opportunity. So when Alan let me know that he had written a book, I ran right out and picked up a copy. It was an excellent refresher of the extraordinary one-on-one personal coaching I had received in the past from Mr. Neirenberg. I highly recommend this book to everyone seeking a career move. You, too, can benefit from the advice of this consummate professional.

I used Winning the Interview Game extensively during my recent (and successful) job search. Its key points about preparation, practice, and 'day of interview' routine all are spot on. The book brings out a lot of intuitive and common sense points, but arranges them in a coherent and logical fashion that will resonate with almost anyone interviewing for a job or promotion. Bravo !!!
