A Meaningful Glance into Our Past

I just finished this book in one sitting, having only intended to read a chapter or two. I was drawn in and instantly caught up in the story of Zol, and his trek toward becoming a man in his clan. This book is not only engaging, but is historically accurate, using the Clovis people as Zol's clan base. The characters seemed real and engaging; I found myself holding my breath as Zol encounters dangers that seem unfathomable for an eleven year old boy to face in 2005. I enjoyed particularly the appearance and antics of Koot, the young hunter's pet crow. His actions and behavior were very accurate for those of the Corvid family and I could not help but laugh out loud. I would certainly recommend this book to intermediate readers, especially those young people who enjoy historical fiction. Furthermore, In the Shadow of the Mammoth would be a wonderful addition to anyone's "read-aloud" collection. This book is a triumph for Ms. Clark, and I look forward to seeing more books from her.

This book is exciting from the very first page.I have bought it for six middle-school aged children in my family, both male and female, and they all loved the story. Even their parents were intrigued with the topic aand read it as well. As a former teacher, I highly recommend "In The Shadow Of The Mammoth" as a wonderful addition to a teenager's personal library.

An easy read that moves at a fast pace. Both my daughter and son loved this book (pre-teens). Although the setting is the ice age, the story speaks to the universal struggle kids face in trying to belong, have a purpose and be courageous. The action (especially the encounters with the Sabortooth Cat) had them hooked. They also really enjoyed Zol's pet crow's antics. The illustrations are beautiful and the characters come to life.

I liked this book on many different levels. The main reason was that it was easy to read and it flowed well. I do not read fast but still read it in five days. I loved the way he shares his experience through a story line. You can almost visualize the setup of the gobbler he is hunting. I feel as a novice turkey hunter that the things I picked up from this book will help me on the hunt. Even as I improve and learn I do not feel I will outgrow the entertainment value of this book. I will pick this book back up in a year and read it right before the season again without hesitation. Great Writer. Great Read.

Informative and entertaining....

I enjoyed reading this book because it taught me some lessons for hunting the wild turkey and it was entertaining. Mr Robinson gave some pointers on hunting the bird as well as telling some entertaining stories. I like to learn this way. Rather than have someone tell me how to do things I like it when the lesson is demonstrated in an actual hunt. I would recommend this book for these reasons.

A Must-Read for Newcomers to DC

If you are new to the political job arena in Washington, Bill Endicott's book is a must-read. I had moved to DC in the fall of 2001 with very little knowledge about the political job market. With "An Insider's Guide to Political Jobs in Washington" as my guidebook, I was able to land the job I had sought.

The author does a great job describing the types of political jobs that are available - truly valuable to someone with little or no knowledge of the DC job structure. Following this, the reader learns how to actually get these jobs. The author's experience and knowledge really shine through, and there is no one better than Bill Endicott to explain the process of finding a job. In addition, the case studies present to the reader descriptions of how individuals from a wide range of backgrounds (and party affiliations) not only landed the coveted first job, but also how they had worked their way up the ranks.

Whether you are a student looking to land that first political job or a professional looking to make a career change into politics, read this book to gain an understanding of political jobs that is unavailable anywhere else. I can honestly admit that without "An Insider's Guide to Political Jobs in Washington," I would have never developed a successful plan and would have never landed a great job.

Finally, A Great Political How-To Guide!

Bill Endicott's "An Insider's Guide to Political Jobs in Washington" is a roadmap for those who love politics, but don't quite know how to get started. I can think of nothing else on the market that reveals with full disclosure what working in Washington is like. When I graduated from university 5 years ago, I had countless questions that I couldn't find answers to at career fairs or through contact with alumni: What kinds of political positions are available? How do I decide whom to work for? How does one advance? Should I drop everything and work on a campaign?

These questions and others are precisely what Endicott's detailed description of the political process and his insightful case studies aim to help answer. His years in Washington offer a rich context that shines through in his colorful interviews and anecdotes. Endicott's exhaustive compilation of opportunities available in Washington will be an invaluable resource for aspiring politicos and may even inspire those who like to dabble in politics once in a while to consider public service. Students all over the country will be grateful for Endicott's thoroughness as they will no longer have to rely on word of mouth to get the skinny on what Beltway politics is really like.

A Compelling Call to Service

At last there's a book that explains what political jobs are all about! Bill Endicott's An Insider's Guide to Political Jobs in Washington is a masterful presentation of information, advice and anecdotes. In combination this collection lays out real strategies for preparing for a political career, landing a first job and making a real impact in the job once you get it. The author draws on his own substantial experience in political parties, Congress, executive agencies and the White House to give readers the "insider's" perspective promised by the title. In addition to his own experience, the author introduces the reader to a number of political pros who have "made it" and taken a variety of different paths to their successful careers.

Particularly instructive is the discussion of working in the White House. Regular "West Wing" viewers may get the impression that the chief of staff, the press secretary and the office of communications is pretty much all there is. The book introduces the reader to almost 50 different offices and a variety of different jobs that serve the immediate needs of the President and his senior staff. While one might get the impression from television and movies that jobs working for the President are out of reach, Endicott dispels that myth.

One might expect a practical "how to" book of such detailed quality to suffer from air of cynicism about the entire process. The absence of that outlook is one of the most refreshing and enjoyable aspects of the book. Bill Endicott believes in the process and he offers a passionate defense of both politics and service. Beyond offering the reader roadmaps to successful political careers, Endicott defends service within the political process. In Endicott's Washington, anyone with a strong desire to serve can use their skills to make a meaningful contribution to their country. That is an optimistic proposition, but it is supported by strong empirical evidence throughout the book.

For those inclined to ask John F. Kennedy's eternal question, "what you can do for your country?", Endicott's book reveals where and how to find the answer.

The dreaded job interview - having to attend one can be quite
draining. Most people experience one at least once in their
working life. It is part of the hiring cycle.

What a lot of job seekers lack is the skill set required to
sell themselves. An interview is a two-way street. It is an
exchange of information and ideas with the aim of impressing
each other.

This can be a daunting task from both sides of the table.
Both parties need to be aware of what is required from the
process, to achieve success. It is not easy to do this but
the aim of an interview is to obtain a successful outcome.

All people seeking employment can learn how to improve their
interview skills. Techniques are available that will help to
improve their prospects of getting jobs. Carole Martin's
book is an excellent source to guide people in the right
direction.

Full of valuable information, the book will add immense value
to a person's armory in the quest for a job. It is a book I
strongly recommend to every job seeker.

Working a full-time job and an being a partner in an upstart publishing house, I don't have a lot of time to plan a full-out strategy for interviewing, the Interview Survival Kit saved me time and a lot of stress with the great flashcards! I was able to (literally) whip through the items I really wanted to focus on when going through preliminary phone interviews with prospective consultants and interns since we should both be focused on the same things. I found it any easy way for me to stay focused and keep the conversations on track and informative. I recommend these highly to everyone I meet!

After a weekend of using this kit to practice my skills, I was able to walk into my interview with a level of confidence I've never had before. I was called back the same day for another round of interviews, and got an amazing job offer the next day. The strategies contained in the kit were right on target, and there wasn't a single question I wasn't prepared to answer. I owe my new success to this amazing, easy to use kit!

I really liked the fun, playful tone of the deck and the colorful presentation made it very easy to digest. Plus, the advice was spot on - Keep up the great work!

This small book is one that has power beyond its pages. I am so impressed at the sound research that Dr. Joseph has conducted to back up this program. Clients in my career coaching practice are reporting impressive results(such as acing interviews!) from using this book and the companion CD. Sports figures have been using these techniques with much success. The application of mental imagery as a way to speed up job "landing time" makes perfect sense and Dr. Lynn Joseph's book not only builds a case for using these practical techniques but also guides us gently through them. She has given countless job seekers a gift whose effects will be lasting. I recommend this to anyone who is open to stepping out of the box in order to reap impressive rewards.

The style or this writer is honest and practical. She provides minimal, easy bite size chunks of info that hit home ... helping you put one foot in front of the other confidently and with a natural inherent sense of success ... no matter how the day's "battle" turns out ... because you've practiced a good side of yourself.

I borrowed this book from the Library, but will buy it with my first pay check (I just got my job today) just for the chance that some of its authentic attitudes will rub off on me as I pursue the art of making successful contributions in my workplace.

Thank you, Claudia Jordan.

As a northern deer hunter I am delighted with this book. Most of the whitetail deer books out there (at least the managment ones) are based in the south. Ozaga's book rings home with this Michigan guy.
The book is packed with great info on northern deer behavior. The photos are good and the research is sound. I wish there were more out there like it. So far, next to Alsheimer's deer books this is my favorite. I also just found a great northern food plot and habitat book called "Grow 'Em Right" by Dougherty and Dougherty which is right on the money up here in cold country.

An Excellent Choice For Any Deer Hunter

It is not often that one encounters a book that answers long standing questions, especially those that arise from the contradictions found in the popular deer hunting press. There is nothing Gee Whiz about Mr. Ozoga, he tells it like he sees it. When he doesn't know he tells you that too. This book is based on 30 years observation and experimentation on white tails at the Cusino Wildlife Research Station and dispels many of the myths and folklore regarding deer.

Be aware, however, that this book is not easy reading, but seems to be based on the discussion and conclusion sections of his research papers. It is approachable and yields to the diligent reader. It is well worth the effort and the price.

I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Barton's review.

I have been studying and hunting Whitetail deer for over 30 years and this book actually contains useful information. Too many times books of this sort are centered on some gimmick to kill the big one. This is not the case with Ozoga's work, you will come away with a deeper understanding of the deer's habits, social order and habitat requirements. Especially for the northern deer herd. For anyone who has an interest in Whitetails this is a must read.
