I started catfishing again this past year after about 20 years and realized I had forgotten a lot of stuff about catfishing. My wife bought this book for me for Christmas, and it is great. It reminded me of everything I had forgotten over the years, and it taught me a LOT of new things I never even knew about. This is as complete as the average (and above average) catfish angler could ask for. Highly recommended for all ages and skill levels.

A very informative and very beautiful listing of all the many different species of gamefish. This is one of several fishing books in The Hunting and Fishing Library, which is an excellent series with several books offering more in-depth fishing knowledge on a variety of species. The photography in this series is especially good.

A "must read" for sighthound owners

This is by far the most readable, most informative book I've read on dogs, period. It happens to focus on the sighthounds (gazehounds) most commonly found in the United States, as family members, runners, and hunters. It would make a great book to read aloud and share with others. It is written in a conversational tone but with good knowledge and research into the breeds supporting Mr. Salomon's writings, especially in respect to "form follows function" or the structural and metabolic characteristics of the various sighthound breeds. Good perspective on people and dogs and how they interact in their historical and genetic roles. I am so very glad it was recently reprinted and available to us.

This is a great book for anyone that has a purebred dog of any type. Dutch Salmon drives home the point on why breeding for show ruins a breed of dog and the real art and science in maintaining a breed (or cross breed)is to breed for function and that form will follow. If you own a sighthound breed or cross, this book will encourage you to get out there with your companion and use him or her to there potential. There are alot of books on chasing a lure around and most devote a small chapter on hunting, which is what these dogs are (or were, sadly) meant to do!! Lots of info on most of the popular breeds and the game they chase and sometimes even catch. Best of all, it's full of stories of the authors experiences in the field that read like poetry. Well worth the money. I can't wait to read Dutch Salmon's other books. This book should be given to all the show dog people who still think that bench champ can still do all the things it's ancestors could.

Fills a real void in dog sport writing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Mr. Salmon relates much needed information on a rather esoteric subject. The easy to read, anecdote-filled style brings the sport to life. This is not a dry "how-to" book, although it IS loaded with information and good advice. It is very hard to find information on field coursing, and I'm grateful to the author for taking the time to write this book.

Great book. I think that anybody looking for a team leadership position in any industry will absolutely benefit from reading this book. The book really made me think on how I would answer those questions myself and I incorporated on my answers some key points that I got from the book. The general advice on job interviewing is very good too. Even though I have read several books in job searching, I found advice not strictly related to project management that I have not seen elsewhere and I found very useful. One think I liked about the book was that it goes straight to the point and covers in a few pages what other books might cover in chapters.

I have a job thanks to this book.
As a recently divorced woman with two kids I had to go back to the job force and was really rusty in the whole job finding process and was getting no where fast. After coming back from my third job interview with no prospects of a call back I started looking for some help and decided to give this book a try. I was skeptical that they could actually have the answers for me but the book quickly tells you how you can apply the answers to your own situation. In my first interview after I read the book, I tried one of the answers and seeing that I was getting smiles and nodding at the other side of the table I used their suggestions for two more questions and lo and behold I was offered the job the next day!.

This guide was like the course in Business Communication I never took in school, but have since wished I had, and which could probably have saved me a lot of failed interviews and missed opportunities. Every employer will tell you the importance of communication skills, and this guide helps to sharpen those for the business world, especially in terms of the job search.

Written in a clean, professional tone and complete with plenty of examples, this guide will provide you with everything you need to navigate your way through an effective job search.

I've also found that since my job search, the communication skills I've learned from this guide are equally effective on the job. A definite must have for anyone entering the business world for the first time, or those who need a refresher course before embarking on a new job search.

But then I bought this guide and found a lot of useful tips and tools to rework my resume and hone my approach, using all of the contacts I had at my fingertips and through friends of friends to create opportunities and eventually get a job offer from the company i'm now with. i found the many examples of different letter types especially helpful.

Getting a Job: A Study of Contacts and Careers

how labor markets really work!

Review Date: 2002-11-14
Mark Granovetter reveals how people make economic decisions and take economic actions based on the social structure they are embedded in. We are not totally rational beings as the old economists would have us believe -- we are social beings -- influenced by, and influencing those around us. It is how we vote, how we dress, how we think, what careers we pursue and what products we buy.

Yet, those immediately around us may not be very useful in helping us find a job! Our close associates know what we know at the same time we know it! Therefore, they are not very useful for telling us something new -- like where a job opening is. To find out about jobs, we don't already know about, we need to go outside of our immediate social circle to connect to people we don't see very often any more[old friends, college chums, old army buddies, former co-workers, old sorority sisters]. They now live in different social circles than we do. These social circles have information not available in our social circle -- some of the info is about job openings.

This classic book is still highly relevant and useful after 30 years! The book is somewhat `academic' in parts, but is so full of `gems' that it is worth slogging through the research numbers. Every college graduate should read this book and keep it handy till they retire.

This is the study where the famous "Strength of Weak Ties" paper came from -- IMHO, the best named social science paper ever! Worth the price just to understand the importance, and use, of "weak ties" in our social networks.

This book is a mix of academic and practical. I have recommended it to several clients and friends who don't mind the academic prose to find pearls of wisdom here. Very useful for people trying to understand how the knowledge-worker job-finding process works. Good for HR folks and those who have been RIFfed. A great supplemental book for an HR class in Talent Mgt.

The science of labor markets

Review Date: 2003-03-05
This book is an interesting introduction to the workings of the labor market. The main theory revolves around the fact that contacts within our social circle usually do not have access to information we do not already have; in order to get new information, we need to extend social circles and reach for those with whom we do not have constant contact.

Through a very academic approach to the problem, the scientific approach is best to help us understand how people get jobs. I originally read this book as an undergraduate in a labor economics course, and I have recently consulted it again (10yrs later) and found many insights I had not caught the first time around.

Great Resource for those weary of job search hassles
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-03
As a career counselor, I usually tell students that the best thing I can do for them is to offer the resources to help them find the answers within themselves. Author Frances Schmidt has provided just such a resource in "Getting Hired in Any Job Market." This self-help volume is composed of user-friendly advice and exercises to prepare the reader for the job market. Ms. Schmidt displays her extensive career counseling experience in a very practical, hands-on approach. The foreword sums it up well, "the premise of this book is simple. You can be employed for a lifetime if you believe in yourself, approach the job hunt from the employer's point of view, and use each job as a pathway to the next opportunity."

While the book purports to help any job seeker, I believe it would be most helpful to the battle-weary. Think of that unemployed person asking for answers to `why am I not getting any interviews?' "Getting Hired" takes the reader back to step one on a guided tour through a series of generalized self-inventory questions. Writing out the answers to the long series of questionnaires would take a fairly high commitment of time and concentration. I suspect that the typical job hunter may not be ready to commit the time unless initial efforts prove unsuccessful.

The person who actually does follow the guided exercises stands to learn a lot about self-awareness and job readiness. The chapters on resumes and master cover letters were particularly strong. If you have a friend, student, or client frustrated in their job search process, you could do him or her a favor by providing a copy of "Getting Hired in Any Job Market."

Getting Hired in Any Job Market is an excellent addition to the multitude of career placement information. Frances Schmidt's metaphoric style of writing and practical examples make this book easy to read. The workbook format allows a concrete means of dealing with the job search process and helps individuals to realize their goals and develop self-awareness that translates into the ability to write effective coverletters, resumes, and answers to tough interview questions. Frances Schmidt approaches the job search from an emotional and psychological approach, rather than a purely technical one, which makes this a valuable tool for anyone facing the daunting job search task. As a new graduate, this book has been an extremely useful tool for me.

Great for new graduates!

Review Date: 2001-03-16
I am very thankful for the timing of this publication by author, Frances Schmidt. As graduation approaches, I am finding myself in the middle of the transition process from college to career. I am experiencing many of the side effects that are mentioned in the book as part of the job search process. This book has helped me put into perspective my fears and to realize that my current state of confusion is transitory. The workbook format of this text enables the reader to self-reflect and discover what is preventing movement to phase III of the transition proces, which begins when one decides to take responsibility for getting an ideal job.

All new graduates struggle with these questions: "Am I good enough for that job?" "Do I have the necessary experience to compete and survive?" The issue of confidence is at the core of these questions. I have struggled with self-confidence all my life. This book helped me realize that several negative feelings stem from my lack of self-confidence. My lack of self-confidence is an example of what Frances Schmidt refers to as "self-imposed stone walls."

Every word is meaningful in Frances Schmidt's book. She gets right to the point about several aspects of the job market. She discusses the "Nitty Gritty" of how to job hunt, interview, and write resumes and cover letters. After reading her book, I learned that asking several people about what makes a great resume and cover letter may lead to frustration since "everyone is an expert." The time spent talking to others could be used to create a resume/cover letter masterpiece!

I sincerely recommend this book to any new graduate or person seeking "employment for life." It is a great investment. A lot of books that contain information about resumes and cover letters need to be disposed of in a few years. However, the information presented in Francs Schmidt's "Getting Hired in Any Job Market" is something that can be used for years to come.

I am this book's author and think it worthwhile to note that this book won the Publisher's Marketing Association's "Best Career Book of the Year" award. This was a surprise for me since this is a workbook that includes text with lots of in-the-book activities rather than a typical bookstore book that is almost all text. This is the fourth edition, so it has been carefully improved over time and has had excellent editorial and design work. It has now sold more than 400,000 copies, a most flattering and humbling situation for me.

Farr's book was recommended by my thesis committee member and now I recommend it to students that I mentor. Too bad Betty lumped Farr's book with "What color is my parachute". I was never able to slog my way through that book, but did many of the exercises in Farr's book while doing nordic track because they were so straight forward. I liked how he has you 'free-thinking' about what career you would enjoy if there were no limitations and then helps you bring that back to reality so you can see what IS possible for you to do with your career right now. The step-by-step exercise of breaking down time to meet your goal was invaluable as I was finishing my PhD research. And I still use it today. I strongly feel that his book gave direction to my career. I currently enjoy my position as a director of a department in a pharmaceutical company.

This is a solid book on whitetail hunting. There are plenty of tips and some new and interesting ideas and perspectives on hunting. Many of the photos come from their videos and frankly, some are unclear and blurred due to the conversion from video and/or poor choices of video frames (brush in the way, etc.). I think this is supposed to convey action happening but I don't think it works real well. Regardless, it was a new and novel approach and for that I still give it 5 stars. The photos that are not from video are great. If you enjoy the Drury's videos as I do, you'll love this book. I hope they'll publish more in the future.

I read this book a LONG time ago when looking for a job out of college. It was, and still is, one of the best books I have ever read about job hunting. The tips and advice are very useful because instead of focusing on what you want, you learn to focus on what you are best at. Very thought-provoking and very useful. Learned back then to take what I can do and apply to what I want to do. i still use the techniques and features I learned back then. Tough to find the book now. But well worth it. (Actually, hunting for the book just further shows a trait you may enjoy and be good at...)

I first read this book when I had a degree in Hebrew, little work experience (most of which was clerical and which I hated) and no idea of where I wanted to go. Oddly enough, I have found myself in a situation where I now have 18 years of experience (most of which was corporate and which I hated) plus five years of disability, which is offputting to almost every interviewer. I am currently in the process of re-reading Irish's book, mostly for the analytical exercises he offers.

In summary, Irish suggests that you get a roll of shelf paper (at least that's what I'm using) and list out everything you've done, both for pay and as a volunteer. Then list out everything you loved and everything you didn't love about what you've done to see what kinds of patterns emerge. For example, when I initially used the book, I loved talking to people and I hated taking orders from people I didn't respect. Knowing this, I went to a variety of people to "interview them for information." Since I wasn't asking them for a job, rather for an opinion, many doors and subsequently several good offers came my way.

I should also mention that I recommended this book many, many times to friends and co-workers who weren't happy -- just to point them to the exercises. Somewhere along the way, I forgot my own advice and have really been struggling with conventional thinkers who see only my disability, age and experience and consider them all to be negatives. I think this book is a must-read for anyone who has been displaced as well as anyone who just isn't happy with what they're doing. Life is just too darned short to accept less than the best.
