What a fantastic book!Review Date: 2008-02-15
Everything is covered in this book! After reading it I really feel like I have a much better understanding of whitetail behavior, plus, I'm much more confident. It's not just about deer either; it addresses so many other aspects of hunting. It covers, gear, firearms, proper shot placement, and that's just for starters.
I can't wait until this fall for deer season. I know the only way to become a true veteran hunter is to spend years in the field, but this book will certainly give you a boost if you're looking for some good knowledge!

Powerful Career Management Manual Review Date: 2008-05-19
I got a copy of The Right Job, Right Now and have been thumbing through it for quite some time. I really like what she's put together, but it has taken me longer than I expected to make progress with the book. I initially approached it as I have most other books, with the intention of reading it quickly, from beginning to start.
That was the problem... this can be a "beginning to start" book, but I find it's more like a career management user's manual than anything else. While it's subtitled "The complete tool-kit for finding your perfect career," it is more than that. Let me break it down to show why it's more than just "finding your perfect career."
Part I has five chapters, and is named "What Do You Really Want To Do? A Career Plan for the Rest of Your Life." This is where she walks you through various exercises to help you come up with your "sweet spot," helping you figure out exactly what you want to be when you grow up. I like her approach more than tests that I've seen where they say "you'd be a good mortician. Or software sales rep... either one would suit you fine!"
In these first few chapters Susan Strayer walks us through the "Kaleidoscope Career Model" where we actually figure out what our perfect job would be. What is my risk level? What kind of hours will make me happiest (and most productive)? How do I value benefits, salary, security, etc? During these chapters, and with the concept of the kaleidoscope, we can find that sweet spot, which she argues is where we really need to end up.
I can't argue with that.
Part II is named "Career Action: Getting It In Gear." This is where she breaks down the job search process, including networking, resumes, personal branding, etc. The last two chapters of Part II (which has seven chapters) are Closing the Deal (chapter 11) and Taking and Making the Job (chapter 12).
I think this is where most job search books end, right? After you find the job?
Susan Strayer put in a Part III, which is what you do after you land the job... very cool. There are six chapters in Part III: Managing Your Career: Staying Challenged, Sane, and Motivated. Here are three very cool chapters:
* Chapter 16: Making the Grade is about employee reviews/evaluations. Susan has significant HR experience, and learning about how to make the most of a review is pretty cool (most of my reviews where a joke).
* Chapter 17: Playing the Political Game is self explanatory... again, her HR (and recruiting) experience provides a great perspective on how to deal with office politics.
* Chapter 18: The Fond Farewell. Maybe I don't read enough, but I can't remember another book that talks about how to get out. Brilliant. In business, a purpose of contracts is to figure out how all parties can walk away from a deal. How come we don't read more about how to walk away from an employer the right way, with regard to our career? What a cool ending to this career management manual.
This book is not a lite read... but it is a great insight into career management from someone who has experience as an HR professional, a recruiter, and of course a job seeker. Do yourself a favor and spend the $10 to $16 on Amazon... I bet you'll find yourself referring back to this book over the years!

Worked Great for Me, and will for you too!Review Date: 2007-10-31
I know that as I look at my career going forward, I can not only use the model for new career changes, but also jobs that I may be applying for within my company.
In short, this book should be part of every career decision you make.
A "must have" for strategic career management!Review Date: 2007-10-31
I use this book with clients and regularly recommend it to friends because it is the only book that I know of that addresses the finely nuanced interplay between personal values, skills, work behaviors, organizational characteristics, rewards and long term career strategy in a systematic framework (Kaleidoscope Career Model). After laying out components of the model, Susan provides a step-by-step process for activating the insights and information at every stage of the search process. Whether you're starting a new job search, thinking about strategic career progression within your current organization, or looking to make a complete career change, this is an invaluable tool.

Wonderful Resource for RVersReview Date: 2007-04-02
is a wonderful resource -- it's well-written, filled with great information, and is inspirational and encouraging, as well. Jaimie Hall is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her topic. It's obvious that she's a seasoned traveler -- and has been both working on the road and talking to many other RVers who have worked while enjoying their travels.
The book summarizes over 350 jobs (in categories like work at rv parks and resorts, christmas tree farms, state parks and national forest areas, concessions, seasonal jobs, sales of rv related products, crafts, writing and consulting). Details like how to handle resumes, long-distance job interviews, contact information and communication while traveling, and the right questions to ask about jobs are also covered. In addition to the many options it lists, it points out possible problems and challenges one may encounter on the road while trying to find a job or while working.
If you (like us) are thinking about traveling in an RV, this is the book to have in the planning stage -- and I assume it will also be helpful when on the road.
Also check out the author's website and enewsletter.
Working While RVingReview Date: 2007-02-27
Ultimately I chickened out on the idea, but if you think the open road is for you and want to make some money along the way, be sure to read this book.
It includes a ton of info in the appendix: including contact information for state tourist bureaus, state parks, state revenue offices and state motor vehicle and licensing bureaus and more, plus an additional 32 pages of resources.
Planning for the best of both worldsReview Date: 2007-03-15
Many people who contemplate living the RV lifestyle probably equate it with a leisurely retirement. But what if you combine RVing with a lucrative work life? You may discover that you can hit the road at a younger age and reap more rewards.
Support Your RV Lifestyle spells out in great detail exactly how to live this dream life. Jaimie Hall speaks from her own experience and culls information from a wealth of other sources to create a comprehensive tool for planning to live and work on the road.
Just as you wouldn't set out on a trip without a road map, you would be miles ahead by consulting this guide before embarking on this life journey. There's a lot more to consider than where to park your vehicle each night. Don't assume you'll just "find a job" when you reach your destination. There are many considerations, from tying your marketable skills to a job on the road, to balancing work and fun, to tax implications. Because Ms. Hall is so thorough with her guidance, you will be well-equipped to make decisions about how to combine work with pleasure.
It is likely that some of her 100-plus pages of worksheets and resource lists would assist travelers in general, not only those traveling and working out of an RV. You'll recoup the price of this travel guide many times if you choose to follow its course for living and working on the road

Fantastic News!Review Date: 1999-09-13
The chapters which discuss "Interviewing" and "Following-Up" were literally life savers! I faced many of the book's predicated situations and questions. Thanks for the guidance. I handled them well and managed to convince the panel I am the most suitable one for the job. I appreciate all the help, hints and "tricks" you have shared with your readers. Thank you, Gary and here's wishing you all the best for your next project.

great source of info!Review Date: 2007-10-23
This book is a bit different, dealing with the other things - personal drive, character, etc.
If you are in the business, you will find something here you didn't know!
My friend Mark Hansson wrote to me recently to recommend Eve Light Honthaner's The Complete Film Production Handbook (3rd Edition, Book & CD-ROM). Mark is a busy guy in `the biz,' having done almost a hundred films and TV shows, including episodes of Murder She Wrote, Fat Actress, Six Feet Under, as well as the features Dreamgirls and The Quickie (overlooked and much-recommended) - so his advice is key.
Turns out that Eve and Mark have been friends for a couple of decades, since they met on a film when Eve was a Production Coordinator. Mark read the first edition in galley form, long before it became a standard reference book at most studios and at many film schools. Eve's got another book out too: Hollywood Drive: What it Takes to Break in, Hang in & Make it in the Entertainment Industry.
While Hollywood Drive deals with more `esoteric issues,' The Complete Handbook is worth its price for the production forms alone: a CD Rom of almost 200 templates that can be customized and adapted for any film or TV show. Mark says, "I still use some of them today, such as the `Walkie Talkie Checkout List,' an active Word document that you can type into once it has been downloaded."
Eve herself has helped thousands of our industry colleagues, through classes and the group she founded - the Film Industry Network (FIN), which still meets once a month at Sony studios. Mark again: "I'm very proud of Eve and the second career she has found as an author and teacher. She's an extraordinary person. And no - I don't get royalties from the book!"
The Complete Film Production Handbook is a must-have for any producer, director, or production manager. Look for third edition on Amazon.com, and at Samuel French and Larry Edmunds bookstores.

CAREER TRANSITIONS MADE EASIER BECAUSE OF SNAPPReview Date: 2002-06-21
This step-by-step book, the third in a series, continues the upward movement for self-improvement and career enhancement in easy-to-read steps. The exercises throughout the book allowed me to take an in-depth look at reality; to really allow me to look at where I have been, where I am today, and where I can go. There are no limitations as to where I can go using the positive structure this book contains. And what an eye-opener to get me from my comfort zone to career heights that I never knew existed.
This book is a must for anyone thinking of a career change, or even job enrichment. For me, this book opened exciting new challenges and opportunities and helped me realize my being laid off was just the beginning of new and exciting avenues for my career and personal growth.

What to do once you HAVE the jobReview Date: 2002-05-05
I learned a lot from this book, like how to be a well-rounded employee. One needs to be an expert, entreprenurial and engaging. I'm only the latter, but it's important to be the first two also in order to get ahead.
I just got a new job recently and my boss gave me a large manual on how to work one of the intensive computer programs. In the old days, I would have let it collect dust on my desk. Now, in order to become an expert (and look good to the boss), I'm definately going to leaf through it and try to become more knowledgeable about my job -- and life-long career. It can only serve me well in the end.
Bravo to Eyres et. al. for sifting life down to a project-by-project basis. It makes it so much easier to swallow in smaller, well-planned bites!

I, for one, had very little experience in more formal dining situations upon graduating from school. This CD was just what I needed to get myself up-to-speed. It is well-organized and well-presented, covering a number of very specific situations that convey the elements of common sense and consideration that underlie all etiquette.
The author thankfully avoids spending time on how to arrange the seating at a state dinner. What he offers is practical, usable advice on the types of real social interactions that occur in all kinds of business. A very useful CD and well worth the price. Definitely five stars.
