I used it twice - and it succeeded beyond my wildest dreams - and I mean that quite literally.

Whatever it takes to find the book - do it! Over the years I have bought 5 of them to share with friends.

After you get it, read it carefully (and ignore both the simplistic language, and the out of date $. Pay attention to the message. The book is old, but the author built one of the largest job placement corporations in the world - all based on the system described in the book). BUT, the tough part is to have the self-discipline to follow through with ALL the suggestions. Hey, it is tough finding a job (particularity if you are still employed while looking). Anyway, I cannot recommend it too highly!

And 5 stars are not enough!

Best of the job-hunting books...

It's a shame that this book is no longer in print. I discovered it in the early 1970s and developed a job hunting plan based on Mr. Djeddah's suggestions. It worked. I had three simultaneous offers to consider and chose the one that was most rewarding both professionally and monetarily.
(An aside -- I met a person at a business meeting just after I turned down one offer. His qualifications were similar to mine. I suggested that he contact the company who made me an offer even though he wasn't looking to make a change. He called them on a Monday, met with them on a Tuesday and was made an offer, which he accepted, on a Wednesday.)
I've recommended the book to many job hunters over the years and it's been an excellent tool.

This is the one book for career enhancing job seekers.

This is a classic, predecessor to the yellow job hunting book whatever-it-is and the hundreds of knock-offs that followed. I have used 'Moving Up' several times over the course of a 30 year career. It helped me shift from a government to a private sector career, and advanced me within jobs, as well as took me from unemployment to great jobs several times. It contains the basis of the philosophy of the granddaddy of career placement services, J.R. Haldane, on whose staff Eli Djeddah was a key guru. If there is only one book to buy-- and follow scrupulously-- this is it. A book full of wisdom in a few pages.

Excellent job networking system that actually works! Great.

This book instructs the reader in how to get in touch with and actually interview with the company persons (including CEOs & Presidents) with the real "hire-fire" power. I have worked this system myself and taught it to others who have also succeeded in getting better jobs or better suited jobs for even more money than they are currently receiving. Can generate up to 2 to 3 job offers in 21 days! Everyone can do this!

"Navigating Newbie-ism: 12 Simple Ways to Thrive in Your First Job and Career" is a must read for all newbies. It is an excellent guide for students who are trying to get their first job as well as those who have just landed their first job, but are looking to make a good first impression.

I am an adjunct professor of psychology and I hear over and over how difficult "navigating newbie-ism" can be and how excellent grades and an impressive academic career are not enough. This book offers easy-to-follow tips and techniques for securing that first job and developing the behaviors that employers look for and value.

I highly recommend this book and wish I had these tips and guidelines when I was looking for my first job and beginning my career!

After I read this book, I immediately bought five more as gifts for my intern, nieces & nephews, and college-age friends.

By utilizing interviews with employers, as well as young employees who are new to the workforce, Marcia presents a convincing argument that the key to succeeding in the workforce is to build a reputation for having a great outlook, demonstrating teamwork, and doing more than just the basics. While the concepts are simple, Marcia presents them in a way that is respectful of the reader and not at all "preachy." Instead of rolling their eyes, I predict that the college students in your life will thank you for this book.

College students who read Navigating Newbie-ism and apply the 12 Simple Ways will certainly succeed in the workforce. In fact the book contains tips that are invaluable to workers at any level.

As a corporate trainer I am often struck by the impact personal reputation makes in the business world. Many people are judged by colleagues, supervisors and clients exclusively through their reputation . . . especially "newbies" entering a new job. In my opinion, managing reputation is critical to success in any career.

In her book, Marcia Hall shares some simple ways people can exhibit behaviors employers value. She has written a good practical read . . . not only for "newbies" but for anyone wishing to take charge of how they are perceived in the workplace.

The Nonprofit Career Guide: How to Land a Job That Makes a Difference

For anyone interested in learning about or pursuing a career in a nonprofit organization this is a must reading. The book is clearly written and provides a wealth of information about the nonprofit sector. Most people would be surprised to learn about the wide variety of fields that nonprofits serve -- from the traditional role of providing services to the underserved to developing affordable housing for the poor and groups with special needs to the Arts and Cultural Affairs to health care organizations and organizations involved in promoting social entrepreneurship. A nonprofit organization may be a one person effort to help their community or a mega corporation like the United Way or the College Board.

This guide is useful for college students who are exploring career choices and for more seasoned professionals who may be considering a career change. It is also useful for individuals who want to remain active after their primary career is over and "give back" through service and are looking to learn more about the nonprofit sector.

The book reminds us of the importance of service and serving others. It highlights how important mission and purpose of organizations that make up the nonprofit sector in the US.

I will be using it as part of my course on nonprofit management for undergraduates to help them gaining a deep understanding of the organizations they will work at while completing a 150 hour field work requirement.

At $16.50 this book is a great bargain.

I never thought I would review a career guide, but this one deserves it. As a student, I found this guide to be indispensable. Not only does it thoroughly cover the non-profit sector, but it also offers advice and insights that can be applied to any sector.

Cryer begins by profiling the sector and highlighting future trends. Notable is the observation that salary in the nonprofit sector depends on field of work and size of organization--in certain fields, nonprofit pay is higher on average than that of their private or public sector counterparts. Furthermore, as the sector grows in prominence, more attention is being paid to salary as a means of recruiting talent. Other trends include a growing need for leadership and increased diversity. The meat of the book is in lively chapters covering sector subsections (arts, education, health international, etc.) and job functions (management, communications, development, consulting, etc.). Its snapshots of different people working in the industry provide a good sense of what to expect from the different avenues the sector has to offer.

This book made me see my career options in a new (and organized!) light.

Why I Hate All Career Guide Books
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-10
I do hate all career guide books.

Except this one. Short. Focused. Keeping it real. And no worksheets.

As an executive working for top Human Resources management in a Fortune 100 company, I have read many career guides. And I have been asked to recommend career guides by concerned friends, usually for their kids. And they are all padded, boring, time-wasting books. Especially the ones with tests and worksheets. Did I mention I hate worksheets?

Here is a book based on a special perspective -- Shelly Cryer is a professional who is in the streets 24/7 with the real people who really know what it takes to work in the nonprofit sector. She is an expert communicator, and impatient to get her ideas across to you -- you'll feel like she is talking to you as a best friend with inside information as you read. And it is a pleasure to finally read a book not filled with true, but tired tropes about networking and how to inflate your resume.

This book is down in the trenches where a good first impression counts, but communicating accurately and tersely gets you noticed. Nonprofits after all have to do more with less, and that includes less time for fluff. Here are two examples which I know to be true from experience, and have never seen in another career book: Do not use the static-ridden, dead-voice cell phone for outreach, stick with a conventional land-line for important calls to get your human nuances across. And here is a big clue, email is a great way to communicate instantly, but do not take any less time crafting your email than you would a serious business letter. How true; email's spontaneous nature seems to sap politeness and logical structure from so many communications I get.

The index. This book has an index. Why should a slim volume like this (less than 300 pages) need an index? Well you can not live without Google can you? Think of this intelligently indexed book as having a built in search engine. So many books skimp and think they can get by with a table of contents with cute chapter titles.

This book is hard-hitting, with career profiles and interviews with true leaders in the nonprofit sector about their own careers. As proof that Shelly Cryer is saying "yo listen up my peeps!", each chapter has a quick review at the end which makes you really think about what you have just read. Not just the usual warmed-over summary, but a superb safety net to make sure you have caught on.

Want to do good in the world?

Want to wake up happy to go to work every day?

Buy this book; you may find your life's calling here.

"The Old Man's Boy Grows Older" is the wonderful sequel to "The Old Man and the Boy". As the author grows up and moves away from his grandfather, he remembers more of the things his grandfather taught him. Being hungry, miserable and mistreated in his first job as crew on a cargo ship brings memories of hunting for ducks and the wonderful food prepared in hunting camp. The reader can see how the grandfather started teaching Ruark to be a man, and dealing with adversity on his own taught him more. As with "The Old Man and the Boy", this book contains some really beautiful hunting and food writing. A book not to be missed by old men, boys, and anyone else who loves the outdoors.

The second-best Hunting book I've ever read.

The reason it's second-best, is that the first book, "The Old Man and the Boy", is the best. Buy them both, read the other one first. If you can, read them when you're 13 or 14 and you're just starting to get good at hunting. If you can't, then just read them anytime, anywhere.

This is a terrific new book from America's best known ghostbuster, parapsychologist Loyd Auerbach. I suppose in some ways the title is a bit misleading, because this is far more than just a collection of ghost cases that Loyd has investigated. It covers all the basics. What ghosts are. What poltergeists are. What hauntings are. What makes them different. How you deal with them. What the right way is to approach a case. How to do a good investigation. And, perhaps more importantly (although often forgotten), how do you actually HELP the people who are having these experiences. I love this book. It's written in a wonderfully clear style and full of interesting tales of things that go bump in the night (not all of which are ghosts!). A great buy for anyone interested in paranormal phenomena.

Ghost Hunting and Parapsychology - Is there a Difference?

Review Date: 2007-09-15
This is a wonderful book that examines the ever growing field of "Ghost Hunting" and Paranormal Investigations. It brings a strong dose of critical thinking for anyone who wants to venture out into the night through dark cemeteries and the basements of creepy looking old houses.

I am grateful for Auerbach's scientific approach to the paranormal, PSI phenomena and the practical outworking of field research. Auerbach is one of the very few people in the world who actually has an accredited Masters degree in Parapsychology and is one of the top minds of the professional Parapsychological community. He is one of the rare individuals who rightly explains why "hunting for ghosts" in cemeteries (especially in the dark of night) is extremely contrary to true field research and reveals the difference between "hunting ghosts" for adult fun (a type of mature thrill-seeking) and truly approaching paranormal investigations with the desire of finding real answers.

This book is a welcome tonic in the midst of so many so-called "scientific" paranormal investigation shows on TV and paranormal investigation groups throughout the country. Just because one uses "advanced techonolgy" during an investigation does NOT make the investigation scientific or even rational. Hopefully more and more people who want true answers about Life after Death, Spirits, and Psychic Phenomena will discover Auerbach's great books.

I've read most of the books by so-called "ghost hunting experts" and find a great distance between such books and Auerbach's. The main difference is Parapsychology. Auerbach understands it and uses it and the others don't. If you don't know the difference then arm yourself with it. Be very weary of anyone who claims to be an "expert" in this field just because of the amount of investigations that they have done, because they are the president or leader of a paranormal group, or because of how many books they have written. Study Parapsychology. Auerbach explains and uses it in all of his books, and with it you will have the tools to recognize the self-proclaimed authorities and their un-scientific explanations.

Mostly all of the Paranormal Investigation groups today as well as the more famous TV shows of the same suffer from two main problems - ignorance and arrogance. Ignorance because of their woeful lack of real science (Parapsychology) and arrogance because their pride scoffs at the notion that they need to be more educated in their knowledge and understanding of the paranormal from where they are at now. Most leaders of these groups do not follow Parapsychology, do not continually seek better, more scientific understanding of the phenomena, nor are really humble people when it comes to these matters. The longer you are in this field the more you will find this the case.

Remember, at its most basic level, science is supposed to represent the investigation of the unexplained, NOT the explanation of the uninvestigated. To be ignorant of the science of Parapsychology does not help the field of paranormal investigations, but actually ends up hurting it.

Bill Wasserman was probably the most dedicated WCO (Wildlife Conservation Officer) the PA Game Commission ever had as its employee for over thirty years.

I had no idea that game wardens had the kind of investigative skills demonstrated by officer Wasserman. Crimes against wildlife can be more difficult to solve than crimes against humans. With wild animals, game wardens can't interview family & friends of the deceased to gather information that might lead to a suspect. Some of the crimes that officer Wasserman writes about were more difficult to solve than the murder of a human!

The book was very enjoyable, and I highly recommend it!

In POACHER WARS, Bill Wasserman portrays his villains vividly, comprehensively, and accurately. Reading this book reminded me of my own "hoofties" and my dealings with them, some of them with Bill at my side. Bill's writing style is easy to read, yet very descriptive. Each story has its own uniqueness and its end only wants to make you go on to the next story. If you want to know what working wildlife law enforcement is like for a Pennsylvania conservation officer, this book is a must read for you. Great job, Bill. And thanks for the memories and your friendship!

Yep, every ridgerunner has at least one story involving a game warden. There are times when they can be annoying, like that time you hit that deer at 1am, only the deer was still twitching and the tire iron was only to put it out of its misery. After all, if you were going to jacklight deer, wouldn't you have a spotlight and a loaded tire iron, and still have an intact radiator? There's no sense letting all that good meat go to waste.

Of course, lots of poachers like to make the claim that a deer was just "road kill", and to portray themselves as down-on-their-luck rascals just looking for meat to feed their hungry family. The hardcore poacher is often a serious outlaw with an extensive criminal record, and little respect for life. Illegal hunting to meet the demands of an international trade in wildlife and wildlife parts is a major problem facing those concerned with the protection and sustainability of wildlife populations. Many of the people involved in the trade of illegally hunted animals are the same people involved with organized crime --such as drugs and prostitution. They want to be where the money is. The trade in bear's gall bladders is a good example. The bear gallbladder trade is similar to the heroin business, except that bear organs are harder to come by and harder to smoke. There is money in wildlife.

If you want to know more about poaching, ask a poacher, or better yet, ask a game warden who has pursued poachers on foot, by vehicle or boat. Or you can just read Poacher Wars, A Pennsylvania Game Warden's Journal by William Wasserman. Bill was a Pennsylvania game warden for more than thirty years, and was responsible for patrolling 400 square miles of rugged mountain terrain.

He's encountered a number of poachers who were convicted felons including murderers, drug addicts, dope dealers and outlaw bikers. He's seen men shot in the woods, with their blood seeping from wounds, and put his own life at risk. In his book you will find sixteen true short stories about these dangerous and unpredictable men.

If you want to know what working wildlife law enforcement is like for a Pennsylvania conservation officer, this book is a definite must-read. Game wardens are police officers with full arrest powers: they solve poaching cases with many of the same forensic skills that police investigators use to solve murder cases-such as DNA analysis and ballistic evidence. Crimes against wildlife can be more difficult to solve than crimes against humans, because there is often a lack of witnesses to interview, and Bambi can't or won't talk.

Hunting season is meant to protect animal populations and breeding cycles. So if you love the taste of venison, polish up the rifle, or your car, and bone up on the latest game regulations. Now where did I put my shotgun???

This book is great, even in todays job market. My husband has lots of sales experience, but with no degree it's hard to stand out among other applicants. After editing his resume using these techniques, the phone calls started pouring in. He's now found a high paying job, and we can thank our 'power resume'. I plan on keeping this if I ever need it in the future.

Great book for over-achievers!

This is one of the best practical books I've ever read, with a wealth of tips, tactics and examples. It shows you how to get a plum position in today's aggressive job market, from resumes and cover letters, to searches, contacts and interviews.

This was THE book that made the difference in writing my own resume, as well as writing resumes for others. Tepper's power resume approach consists of identifying value-added benefits (as in the kinds of problems you can solve), not features (as in job duties and responsibilities), that show a hiring manager what you as the applicant can add to the bottom line...without saying it. It shows you how to carefully match your qualifications with the requirements of top jobs using 10 power resume ingredients that can also be incorporated into your job search. Although this book takes awhile to read, and it is geared towards those in the executive job market, the techniques learned here will stay with you forever.

While Ron Tepper geared this book to the executive job market, the techniques and concepts are transferrable to other sectors. This one book made me change the way I presented myself, and my resume to prospective employers, and how I taught my clientele to write resumes.
Make this book one of the top three in your career planning library. Perfect for resume creation specialists, and job seekers alike.
