I opened Beat of a Different Drum at a moment in my life when I had uneasily decided to follow my heart away from a job that fit within the career path I'd been crafting for myself, and toward an uncertain future. In my malaise of uncertainty about this decision, I began to read Beat of a Different Drum. Not only the stories Dax-Devlon Ross tells, but also his own act of seeking out these stories, comforted and inspired me. The tales of the people Ross profiles address our fundamental fears and ask us to examine why we make the choices we make; what we look for in life and what, at the end of the day, is truly of value.

Ross' profiles invite the reader in almost as a confidante of the interviewee, and his easy but meticulous style engages the reader without trite or falsely inspirational notes. At the most fundamental level, Beat of a Different Drum is an exciting catalogue of life stories. To me, it was just what I needed at a moment when I was facing choices that left me confused and frustrated.

I must agree with the first two reviewers of this wonderful. The stories and the writing are intriguing and inspiring. This book is not only for young people thinking about what they want to do with their life, it's for those of us seeking new career paths or looking for affirmation that our own "road less taken" is right for us.

Though this book speaks to all audiences, I like how Ross also situates the lives of the people he interviews in the social context of our society. These are not just the "I have made it and you can too" stories. These are stories of people of African descent who didn't/don't take traditional paths in life. They are scientist, artists, political activists, inventors, filmmakers, models, book editors, etc. who chose paths in their life in which they were often met with many obstacles--both racial and personal--but yet were determined to fulfill their aspirations.

I'm glad that Ross didn't choose a question-answer format for this book. Instead, he uses his skills and talent as a writer to tell stories so that we get to know his subjects even better. Plus, you get sense that Ross himself was on a journey himself and thus was able to bring a personal side to these stories, even though it's not a book about his life.

I look forward to future and similar works by this author. One wishes that he turn this book into a talk show, so that even more people can discover what others are doing to move ahead in life and shape a path that that is not about money and fame, but doing something that you love and find fulfilling in your life.

I will recommend this book to many people.

Truly Inspiring

Despite being white, I found tremendous inspiration in this book. Throughout my life I've always been a bit of an outcast, and as such wasn't able to completely fit in with any group. In seeking happiness, I found myself pursuing a great variety of interests from martial arts and Asian culture, to politics and history, to my current passion of producing hip hop music.

Out of the 30 characters I found a number of people that I could relate to in various ways. Marla the filmmaker reminded me of how I was unable to fit in with just about any social group, and showed that someone in such a position could find her passion and follow it. On page 351, Azikwe Chandler says some things about the pressures of a materialistic society that I struggle with on a daily basis: when many of your friends are doing just that while you're trying to chase a dream in music, you often wonder "What am I doing with my life?"

The whole recurring theme that "you don't have to do what society says you have to" further reinforces what my heart has been telling me for a while now - that there's no shame in being different, that the struggle for achieving something positive and special is worth every bit of insecurity, frustration and criticism the world throws at you.

So far I've sent copies of this book to my friend in Trinidad who struggles with following her passion for art while being confined to a culture where traditional roles of women are encouraged from all angles; as well as a friend in the Bronx who deals with life as a single mother, raising her son to be a strong man amongst the reality of poverty and the negativities associated with it.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has a dream; it will help you find the courage to follow it.

When he wrote this book, Dax-Devlon Ross gave power to an idea that is dear to my heart--that as African-Americans we don't have to settle for a role or for what's easy and comfortable.

This a perfect book for anyone who is asking themselves "what do I want to be when I grow up?" This goes for high schoolers just about to enter college all the way up to those who are already in the working world and look for a career change. I love the idea that there is a book out there that tells us that we don't have to be limited. There are so many opportunities out there for us and all we need to do is open our eyes to them. It really let me know that I was not the only one who, even though there was doubt and insecurity, took the road less traveled and lived through the struggle and reveled in that choice.

Sometimes we are under the impression that in order to be successful you have to be either an entertainer, in the medical field (preferably as a doctor), a lawyer, or a business person. All we have to do though is look at this book and the people it profiles to know that you can be successful just about anywhere and that success doesn't necessarily have to be financial. It can also be in the way you've lived your life, the happiness you've attained, and the influence you are able to have over others that might be in the same boat.

This book has made me feel validated in the choices I've made and shows that we all can have these choices too.

A hunting book that is actually about hunting

Black Bear Hunting is an exceptional book for the hunter. Unlike most hunting titles that quickly turn into a list of rifles, cartridges and retread ballistics table, Black Bear Hunting dedicates only 10 of its 370 pages to a the selection of appropriate weapon; smokeless and blackpowder rifles and handguns as well as archery equipment. The remainder of the book, in exceptional detail and clarity, covers animal behavior, habits and habitat, specific locations of dense population and high hunting success rates, and many very specific approaches to hunting. In the latter parts there is, again, very detailed information on everything from field dressing to preparing a trophy animal.

Excellent author; great writing style, easy to follow, clear and logical presentation of information. The production quality of the book is excellent, including the photography that appears throughout the book. I'm glad I bought the book.

This is a "GREAT" book it covers it all. You cant find a better book on Bear hunting. Whether you are a beginner or well seasoned bear hunter I gaurantee you will learn alot from this book. This is by far the best book on bear hunting I have ever found. This book will help you learn to judge the size & sex of bear's, (I think they are the hardest animal to judge) Also shot placement is SO important its a must have book if you are interested in bear hunting.

Amazing book on an important primitive weapon.

This amazing little book tells everything a layman wish to know about one of the most fascinating, efficient, and seldom-know of the weapons of the World: the Blowgun. Blowguns history, construction, and usage; conventional projectiles making and usage; advanced projectiles making (such as stun-type, mace-type, target, hunting, broadheaded, incendiary, explosive, even poisoned ones). A chapter on poisons, but from a modern, urban-household point-of-view: how to use common products as deadly poisons; how to prepare true chemical-warfare-type poison from common inseticides. This book is a must for any weapons buff, collector, hunter, or survivalist. Afterall, wich makes a good weapon? It must be cheap (so cheap you can put it into the garbage anytime you want - or need!), precise, silent, easy-to-use, easy-to-conceal, easy-to-destroy, and, most of all, deadly. And, the Blowgun is such a weapon! Today, South-American Indians still kill animals and men alike with theyr primitive Blowguns, using poisoned-coated darts. No survivalist can skip such a weapon!

Professionally, I'm an attorney, journalist, and published writer of 3 books & 26 booklets. I have hunted with every conceavable weapon, from British double .577 rifles, to .44 Magnum revolvers; from primitive bows & arrows, to advanced compound crossbows; from Argentine bolas, to ancient atlatls; and hear me: hunting with a Blowgun is fascinating! Go and buy this book NOW! You'll wonder how you lived without it! Good look with this unique work!

An Excellent Introduction to a Unique Weapon

Blowguns are unique and interesting weapons, enjoyable for sport and capable of killing small game in hunting or survival situations.

In "Blowguns: The Breath of Death" Michael Janich discusses the history of blowguns, their advantages and capabilities, and provides instructions on how to make your own blowgun at home.

The accuracy of blowguns is explained. The average shooter can quickly learn to consistently hit a `grapefruit' size target at 40 yards. And the power of a blowgun is shown where darts are capable of easily penetrating a 3/8 inch piece of plywood.

Michael Janich also shows how to make special projectiles for your blowgun, such as injector darts to inject poison into large game being hunted and broad-head darts using `X-acto' knife blades for hunting small game. There is also a brief introduction to using making and using poisons on your blowgun darts.

I first read "Blowguns: The Breath of Death" about 10 years ago, and after re-reading it again today I found it just as interesting and informative as when I first read it.

Enjoyable and highly recommended.

Michael Janich is perhaps best known for his impressive knowledge of knives, knife fighting, and the martial arts, but this informative book also clearly demonstrates that his knowledge of blowguns is unsurpassed. Janich shows how practical blowguns can be under a variety of circumstances and lays it on the line as to what they can and can not do. Whether you are a collector, hunter, or survivalist, this book will help you out.

Author Janich writes on a subject shrouded in mystery-even to a primitive weapon enthusiast-here in Europe the blowgun as a real hunting weapon is almost totally unknown. It's hard to comprehend the force your own breath transfers to a razor sharp dart(as the name of the book implies).Janich's work is pretty well rounded, although I was somewhat disappointed about the lack of actual hunting experiences and the effect of a hunting dart on a real life situation.Janich has a slight twist towards an anarchist point of view(slashing tires, harassing people with special shots etc.),but for me that was just an amusing flavor within the informative context. An important,if not the ultimate book on blowguns.

There are probably about 20 books every person should get and read as a kind of human body instruction manual. This is one of them. If you work a job which makes regular sleep difficult, this book has many tips I've used to great success. It will most likely convince you to make time for ample sleep in your routine as an essential priority alongside nutrition and activity. Better sleep will improve almost every aspect of your life. With all the expensive "solutions" weight loss gurus, self help speakers, and fitness device manufacturers try to sell, this is a cheap and incredibly effective investment to improve your life.

It's fun and easy!

The Body Clock Advantage is easy to read and offers practical advice on a variety of subjects. Dr. Edlund offers nuts and bolts solutions for a variety of challenges facing modern people such as reducing jet jag, improving romantic relationships, and establishing a pain free exercise program. The writing style keeps your attention throughout the book (I read it in less than 3 days!). He weaves real life examples into the advice so it's easy to "get the point" and see the value of using your body clock to your advantage.
It's hard to pick a favorite section because so many apply. I discovered that my husband is an owl and that I'm not ... I now have practical things to help me if I want to stay up late with him. I particularly enjoyed the section on not only WHY to fit breakfast into my busy day, but HOW to do it. I followed the advice and feel better at work already! I'm going to recommend this book to family, friends, and coworkers! It can help eveyone and it's easy!

In my daily practice of primary care medicine, where I deal frequently with the challenging problems of obesity, sleep disorder, sexual dysfunction, inability to concentrate on tasks, fatigue, and depression, I now have another valuable resource in my armamentarium.

Dr.Edlund in very understandable language lays out a practical and sensible game plan for dealing with life's problems. His explanations of how the human body responds to time change and the variability of individuals, ie: larks vs. owls, is intriguing. How to harness time and use it to one's advantage by being cognizant of the effects of light vs. dark hours and manipulate these effects with light boxes can certainly improve the quality of one's life.

Dr. Edlund's expertise on diet, exercise, sleep, and pharmacology helps the reader adjust his lifestyle for a healthier existence. This book offers something positive for everyone. It serves as a user's guide for the body.

Using the Body Clock to Our Advantage

Review Date: 2002-12-20
In this book, Dr, Edlund condenses knowledge of human circadian rhythms into an understandable and useful package. He describes how the body clock effects virtually every aspect of behavior and performance and demonstrates how just a little knowledge of the internal clock can improve function.

The "how to " information is particularly relevant to those of us who routinely tend to cut into our sleep time or subvert our body clocks just to meet the demands of daily life. ( I never realized how many accidents occur between midnight and six , for example, forty times the daytime mortality for truckers.) The author's LENS program of light, exercise, naps and socialization, offers hope for shift workers. There are also useful programs for athletes tyring to break records, students studying for exams, dieters, when all else has failed, and even terrorism prevention.

This is an amusing, easy to use, practical book. I would have liked an index and a few more scientific references but neither detracted from my enjoyment of reading it.

I think this book is good but feel it's a little outdated. He talks a lot about the paper submission of resumes and applications. I haven't applied for any government job that requires the paper method. He has incorporated discussions on the electronic resume, USAJOBS, etc but you can tell it's just an add-in. His story examples are from 1969 and I just really don't feel they work so well in today's government hiring model. I'd like to see updated success stories incorporated.

In spite of the above comments, his discussions on ways to enhance your resume to get your foot in the door helped. My resume has made it to the hiring official over 90% of the time since I read his hints and I've been called for 2 interviews. This is a marked improvement and I feel it's a matter of time before being hired. I've only been working with his book for 30 days and review it frequently for tid-bits I missed earlier.

I recommend this book to anyone trying to break into government employment. Good luck!

An INDISPENSIBLE guide to finding and getting a federal job. I used the information in the NEW 10th edition and was granted 5 interviews, 3 job offers and accepted a GS-12 position; then negotiated a significant PAY increase; just 2 month into my search. After arriving at my new position, I used the Federal Job career information section to obtain additional vacation time for my prior military service and to make the right decisions on my benefits. Dennis Damp hit a GRAND SLAM with this book; it is simply the BEST Federal Jobs Guide on the market today. If you are looking for a comprehensive federal jobs guide that really puts you ahead of the competition, this is the book to buy. Thank you, Mr. Damp.

Mr. Damp gives all the details needed to analyze the annoucement and revamp your resume for the positions. Every penny spent here is worth the precious reciept of a certificate for a particular vacancy. The last thing I want to add is that I just started applying in November 2007. This book got me to the top of the list. Thanks Mr. Damp.

It's tough looking for a job when you're over 50. This workbook does a great job of showing you how to leverage your experience and work ethic into a new job. It's especially valuable if you haven't had to look for work in a while -- it does a great job of reminding readers how to produce an effective resume and cover letter, how to network, how to perform well in the job interview, and how to negotiate. It's well worth the price.

And if, like so many experienced professionals, you want to switch from the business world to nonprofits, you should check out From Making a Profit to Making a Difference: How to Launch Your New Career in Nonprofits which provides all the secrets for making this very difficult transition.

Katy takes a new approach to an age-old problem in this book. I am a civil engineer, and writing a technical resume has always been on my inhibition list. She takes a pain free approach to provide a sensible procedure to the complicated process of writing a target technical resume. She laid out a straight forward method to help everyone from the novice starting from scratch to the experienced just revamping an old resume for a new position. This book has it all, and in an easy to follow format.

I was able to take my generic, all-encompassing, historic resume and fine tune it to job-specific descriptions. I accredit Katy to providing me with the tools I needed to prove myself at several interviews, and ultimately land the job that I wanted. Thanks Katy!

As a Career Counselor, I'm always assisting my clients with resumes. Creating a "target" resume is a foreign concept to most folks. It's a common misconception to include your entire work history and every experience on your resume. Katy's book focuses on how to match your resume to a specific job. She gives strategies that have proven successful for myself and my clients on how to incorporate your most relevant skills and experience for a particular position. This technique makes it easier for an employer to know which job you're interested in and how you stand out as a candidate. I love the before and after resume samples and refer to them often. Way to go, Katy! Thank you for another useful tool!

You don't have to live in Hollywood to work in the film industry even though a large part of moviemaking is based in and around Los Angeles. Independent film (and even an ever increasing number of studio productions) are made "on location" around the country and around the world. Career Opportunities In The Film Industry is an essential reference for anyone considering the prospects for employment in this globe-spanning industry. Thematically organized into sixteen sections, the more than 75 jobs range from screenwriter, Stuntperson, Storyboard Artist, Production Assistant, and color timer, to auditor, gaffer, film critic, boom operator, music supervisor, caterer, and dialect coach. Informed and informative, each job descript-ion is succinct and comprehensive. Also available in a hardcover edition, Career Opportunities In The Film Industry is enhanced with the inclusion of a glossary, bibliography, various appendices, and an index.

I have read quite a few of these types of books and I must say that Changing Careers for Dummies is in a class by itself. It is an extremely useful and enjoyable book. The author steps you through a reassessment of your likes, skills and talents in a manner that makes the process much simpler than is the case with other career changing books. The book also has a friendly, almost nurturing feel that is welcome during a time of uncertainty. McClelland almost makes it seem that changing careers is something to regard with joy and positive anticipation. Highly recommended!!

This book is really excellent. One of the reasons is because it specifically addresses career *changes*, as well as just careers in general. There are certain details and differences, especially in the psychology of the career changer. I believe this books hits that nail on the head.

There are some sections that really, really help you get to the core of what you were born to do...which is a very hard process.

This book came at a fortuitous time in my life. My company had just gone through a small downsizing maneuver under the guise of 'enhanced performance system' employee reviews. It certainly made me sit up and notice, especially since my job and I aren't really well suited to each other. Ms. McClelland's book gave me much more insight into what I really wanted to do, and how to go about it. I especially liked the section where you find out what interests you, out of the seven sections, I found four that fit me. Interestingly enough, none of the four are in the area in which I currently work. She also gives the reader permission to dream of ANY career, and not to be bound by old thoughts and worries. I intend to change careers in about a year, and will take the discoveries I made by reading this book into my next job. It can truly help anyone who wants to move on to something else, something they've always wanted to do!

A very usable and practical guidebook

What I liked best was that this was not just a theoretical examination - but rather an excercise that gets the reader to take a very pragmatic examination of their overall needs and wants. Most of us have thought about those things that affect our career choice at some point, but this book takes one through an organized evaluation of the many aspects that are important in selecting a career - and does so using worksheets and other means that give the reader and organized and well thought out picture of career options that best meet their needs. I think this is an excellent book that really gets your personal factors affecting career choice in front of you in a very clear and straightforward manner.

Great Insight into Lessons Outside of College

I'm a little older now. I've been out of college for over 10 years. As you get older, you tend to look back on your life. I thought about my time in college. I didn't do so well. I thought about my attempts to get work after college. It was horrible.

In terms of finding work, every approach that I tried, and it didn't work, the author said not to do when in college or after having left college. My approach led to frustration, anger, and bitterness.

I wish that this book was available for me when I left college. Even though I'm working now, I learned what "real life" was, and it's different from the "college life".

This book should be given to high school, college, technical school kids, whatever. Taking heed of the advice in this book will save them the bitterness that I experienced 10 years earlier.

Must Read!

I just read this review elsewhere and thought it summed up the book well...

The College Grad's Guide to Purgatory is the complete guide to finding and surviving a job. This book describes the process of finding a job from the decision about your major through the truth about internships and summer jobs to the best jobs finding resources. Then the book goes even further explaining resumes, interview strategies, and how to survive office politics.

Though the title of the book suggests this guide is written specifically for college and university graduates, practically anyone looking for a job will benefit from the author's suggestions. The tips in this book are straightforward, honest, extremely realistic, true to life, and often quite hilarious. I think this book should be required reading for every student leaving high school, technical school, college, and university.

I thought this book was hillarious, though painfully accurate. I myself had a hard time finding gainful employment after college. The books on the market about getting a job seemed to gloss over the hellishness I was about to experience. Arendt tells it like it is. No holds barred. While it may seem pessimistic, Arendt also explains how to deal with the difficulties she has experienced on the job hunt. I think the advice is practical, without being sugar coated. Not only is it practical, but also fun to read. The author's sardonic witt kept me chuckling. I loved the corporate cubicle inhabitants descriptions in the back of the book. I think this book would be helpful to anyone on that arduous search for a job. Also it might be comforting to other job searchers, who feel as though they are the only one who can't find a job.
