I recently bought Real Life Guide to Life After College to learn how to write my resume. This book includes software to build a paper resume and an online one also. I graduate next month and already have tons of interviews set up thanks to the tips in this book. Although I haven't yet read them, there are sections in here on managing your money and the Internet too.

I am about to graduate from New Mexico State University with a BS in Marketing. I bought this book, followed the directions, and I landed a cool job that I start right after graduation. The biggest thing I got out of it was how to approach interviews and sell myself to the interviewer.

You might be able to find a number of books with advice on starting your career, but you won't find one with as consistently good advice - or as practical. At the same time, the Real Life Guides give you a readable book. With advice like this, hopefully you'll be able to avoid mistakes others have made for you.

Everyone I have spoken with, who has read the book, has had only positive things to say about it. I am very pleased with the book and think that it is a great read for gun-nuts, hunters, safari goers, dinosaur fans, etc. Most often I hear, from hunters especially, that the Terminal Medicine formula is reason enough to buy this book.

Finally, something better than TKO ! ! !

Review Date: 2008-09-03
Finally, someone has come up with a ballistic formula that surpasses TKO (Taylor Knock Out). The author has developed a formula called Terminal Medicine (T.Rx) that is complicated but really works. We have to be thankful that he has included pages of tables including most known large/dangerous game cartridges, showing where each cartridge falls in comparison to the others.

The author's T.Rx formula is so surprisingly accurate that it will surely take the place of TKO for all big game hunters. Catridges fall in line exactly as we (hunters) know and expect they do.

It is not only the formula that makes this book so great. The tables in this book are worth the purchase price alone. One table applies T.Rx to animals from the smallest dear to the largest elephant and beyond.

rexGun is a must have for every shooter/hunter!

bleeding-edge paleontology and ballistics

Review Date: 2008-08-18
This is a magnificent book. The author is clearly at the bleeding-edge of paleontological thought. His descriptions of the physiology and behaviour of Tyrannosaurus rex paint such a clear and believable picture of this animal that it is almost unnerving. I am quite sure that most of his assertions will be proved out, eventually.

How Dr. Templar can have such a clear and terrifying vision of T. rex and still wrap his mind around the idea of hunting them for sport is quite beyond me.

I do not follow theoretical ballistics and the author's Terminal Medicine formula is quite a bit over my head. But, if his vision of ballistic theory is as accurate as is his vision of T. rex then I am quite sure his formula will become the new gold standard in its field.

The strength of "Rooster! A Tribute to Pheasant Hunting in North America" lies in its pictures--of which there are plenty. Of course, what animal looks better in a photograph than a ringneck rooster with its bright plumage?

The text of the book is less impressive, and seems to stumble at times, but is nevertheless informative and readable for the most part. That is why I deducted a star from my rating.

Overall, this book is sure to be enjoyed by anyone who relishes in the unique experience of pheasant hunting.

If you love pheasants and pheasant hunting you will love this book. While it may seem a bit costly compared to other pheasant books, it is well worth its price. The large color photos are beautiful and the the narrative (chapters) of the book are well written and interesting. You will find yourself reading this "coffee table" book over and over. Being a pheasant and quail hunter, I would love to see a similar book called "Bobwhite." That's a hint to the authors and photographers of Rooster! It's time to tackle a new project.

Solo Safari is a great book with great stories by several different writers. The information is a bit dated and much of it would be of little use in trying to outfit your own hunt in Africa today. That said, of the nearly 70 books I have read on hunting in Africa this book is one of the four or five most enjoyable. Unlike many modern African hunting books which deal only with the "hunt" these writers' stories are also about their "adventures" in the wilds of Africa.

This gives some info. not in the 4 other reviews, so here it is.

Its 27 chapters and 4 appendices of great reading on Africa hunting in 6 different countries. Part I is all Cacek stories about his self outfitted hunts, i.e. no prof.hunter backup, I think in the 80s. Cool stuff for sure. Shoot an elephant, start a stampede, run for your life. Then, go back and find 3 more elephants waiting by the dead one. How do you pack out an elephant?

That's the easy part, the hard part is the lions and leopards that like elephant meat too.

I always thought the prof. hunter safari's were kind of fancy when they ironed the cleaned clothes for hunters and put them out each day. Well, there's flys, to small to see, that get on clothes drying outside in some countries of Africa that put big old welps on your body if not killed. Ironing heat kills them. tsetse flys will kill the animals that carry the gear, if you run into a swarm of them more than a few days from getting meat back to camp, then what?

Ok, part I is 19 chapters of Cacek's stories. He has a sense of humor, ch.4, Harvest of Tranquility is the one where they run for their lives after shooting one elephant and starting a stampede. He always took trackers and skinners, they are the ones that knew how to live there and get around and pack an elephant out of there.

Part II has stories by 5 other authors who have outfitted their own safaris. One guy has some top animals too. They contributed 8 chapters and they are very good also.

Part III is the 4 appendices, A)planning, B)cartridges and bullets, C)big rifles, and D)cameras and binoculars. Cacek thought a 338 and 458 was a near perfect combination, but in jungles, even a shotgun is a very desireable gun.

What's the most dangerous game? He said, lion, there's a dead guy in 65% of the trajic encounters and a mauled guy in 35%, ref. Killers in Africa by Alexander Lake. Cape buffalo injure more, but so many of those are shot compared to lions, the percentage of hunters hurt is way lower than a lion. Leopards maul a lot, about 1 in 25 hunted. Buffalo, 1 in 1000 hunted. It all depends on the conditions at the moment too.
Like a lion out in an open field is not as dangerous as a moma elephant on your left when baby elephant is on your right going down a jungle trail.

Many of these people were able to accomplish the self outfitting because they had lived there or were living there. Its a great book on African hunting.

Great stories, but take them with caution.

I don't have quite the African experience that Casek has, but I have hunted there and will do so again, with a Professional Hunter. A solo safari is a tremendously appealing idea, however, given the logistic difficulties involved in trying to set up a solo safari today, (some countries listed by him no longer permit foreigners to try it) I would seriously consider his recommendation that anyone who wishes to go this admirable route should do so from an African base. Get the job on the continent, THEN give setting up your own safari a try. I've considered doing so myself, once I retire here. Until then, I'll go with a reliable professional.

In any event, a sterling read, (except for his American patronizing of white Africans) and his recommendations regarding equipment, weaponry, etc. are good sense for any hunter, solo or no. A solid four stars.

I have read a lot of books, magazines, and articles on turkey hunting. I have to say this is by far the best I have come across. The advice and strategies mentioned in this book are great for use in the field. Most books waste the experienced hunter's time with very basic information. This book doesn't do that. I will be reading this book every year in preparation for turkey season.

Michael Hanback's "Spring Gobbler" can be described as the essential "how to" manual on turkey hunting. It is great for beginners, but advanced hunters will learn from it as well. I find myself going back over it again and again. Keep a highligher handy too, because you'll want to mark up all the good information. It's that good.

I started reading this book because I was curious about turkey hunting and wanted to learn more. Hanback seems to cover every aspect of turkey hunting, from scouting to camo to calls to turkey guns. And his hunting experience examples read like a novel. This is the first "hunting book" that I actually could not put down. I wish he would write one about whitetail hunting! (Fall Whitetail Fever, maybe).

Hume's book is an invaluable asset for anyone even considering going on the market. It covers every detail of the job search: application packets, interviews, campus visits, follow-ups, and negotiating. Moreover, it provides specific advice for landing a position at both research and teaching institutions. Particularly helpful are the lengthy lists of interview questions and the sample documents--which go well beyond the simple CV-and-Cover-Letter combination. Make reading this book the first step of your job search, and refer to it regularly as you work through the process.

I can't overstate how valuable this book was to me when I was on the academic job market (2006/2007 academic yr). From my earliest pre-planning for the job search (including tips for professional development and invaluable timelines) to the moment I touched down to all of my campus visits (questions to ask, questions to avoid, tips for the job talk) and even to that final stage: managing offers and contracts, this book helped me figure out how to proceed on the academic job hunt. If you think you'll ever apply for an academic job in the humanities (even years down the line), this book will be useful to you now.

These features were especially useful for me:
*models and tips for CVs, application letters, dissertation summaries
*practice questions for MLA interviews
*what to expect at MLA
*a primer on handling campus visits and job talks
*timelines (how long you can expect to wait to hear about MLA and campus interviews, for example)
*things you'd never think of, like what to ask when you get the call from a department head inviting you to campus.

Having been through this often mystifying and incredibly stressful process, I can attest to the author's sound advice. Now that I'm in a tenure track job (and she has advice for once you get a job, too) I've recommended this book to job seeking grad students in my own department, and I recommend it to you, without reservation.

This is an excellent and very comprehensive guide through the academic job search process. Hume tells it like it is, and much of what you find in this book is (for whatever reasons) not often shared with graduate students as they embark on their job searches. The many anecdotes and sample CVs are a nice bonus. My department buys this book for every PhD student as they enter their job search year--it is required reading.

This book is an excellent resource for any doctoral student's job search. The advice about interviewing, putting together a job application packet, and making the transition from a graduate student to a faculty member is very timely and helpful. The sample documents, which range from c.v.'s to cover letters, are the best feature of the book. I would highly recommend it to anyone on the job market in the humanities or thinking about the process in the future.

For the last 4 years I've been involved in helping our English graduate students find academic jobs. Hume's book was of immense help in this regard. As the placement chair, I ordered it for our department, but I also encouraged our job seekers to get their own copies. It is simply the best book out there right now covering all the ins and outs of the humanities job market. Hume's advice, always provided in clear and direct language, is deeply rooted in both her own experience as a long-time professor at Penn State who has seen many job candidates come and go and the experience of the many students with whom she successfully worked as Penn State's placement advisor. In addition to excellent insights into the dos and don'ts of writing one's job application materials--letters, c.v.'s, teaching portfolios, follow-up communications, etc.--one of the greatest strengths of the book is its presentation of the feed-back Hume received from "her" job seekers in form of long lists of questions people were asked at MLA interviews or on campus, for instance. Working with "my" graduate students, I frequently staged mock interviews with them based on a sampling of the questions provided in Hume's book. Many of our students commented to me that one of the main reasons they felt they did well at MLA or on campus in terms of handling the various and varying questions they had to engage was that they were never really caught off-guard because Hume's book seems to cover every conceivable question one could possibly be asked. Also of great help are the many sample-documents Hume included in her book--again directly taken from her successful seekers. In short, if you at all wonder about the academic job market--what it is like, how you should prepare for it, how you might want to negotiate its various stages, and even how to handle yourself in case of success (negotiating your job offer, becoming a new faculty member)--you could not do better than get your hands on this book. There might be a question or two that the book doesn't touch on--but I can't think of any right now.

I recently picked up Kathy's book again after 2 years. It is just as helpful to me today as it was then.

She has comforted me as though I met with her in person. She identifies with my feelings and circumstance - there is no "put on".

Kathy's ability to write from her heart and experiences are useful in my journey for "life work".

Enjoy it, I do. I can read it again and again now, remembering that someone knows exactly what it's like to be unemployed and over the age limit.(smile)

I found this guide to be immensely helpful in getting the real story - good, bad and ugly - about the leading consulting firms. The book also has a fascinating new poll/ranking of the 50 most prestigious management consulting firms to work for. (As might be expected, the consultants surveyed rated McKinsey as the #1 most prestigious and BCG as #2). I would highly recommend reading this guide.

I don't normally write reviews, but I just got this book and had to write. The book has detailed insider accounts of life inside every major consulting firm, including its history, areas of specialization, and tips on the hiring and interviewing process. Highly recommended for job seekers and consultants alike.

Reading this book filled me with inspiration to get out and enjoy the outdoors. John Husar's writing is absolutely poetic. He was an artist who painted with humble words. It's an easy read -you can pick up any page and start from there, because it's a collection of his columns. Thank you for making this book!

After reading a few columns, I took my kids out for a walk in the woods for the first time this year. This book is not just for the fisherman/hunter, it's for anyone who loves the outdoors and appreciates natural beauty. It's timeless and classic. I even gave it to a few friends for Father's Day.

Mr. Husar was an avid hunter and fisherman but this book should appeal to anybody who loves the great outdoors. He didn't write about how to catch big fish but about how to have fun while doing it.

I really like that it's a collection of newspaper columns -- you can grab it and read one or two columns at a time, depending on how much free time you have, or read it straight through.

I'll keep this one on my shelf for a long time.

read it - you won't regret it

John Husar's writings don't only apply to fishermen, hunters, or any denomination of people, but to anyone who loves to experience travels, adventures, or living in general, because he wrote not just about the outdoors, but how extraordinary life is. This book is a must-have for anyone who likes good stories told by an exellent storyteller. And who knows, you might learn somthing. Read it, you won't regret it
