This is one the few books that I've read in less than a day. It's not that it's simplictic, its that I couldn't put it down. I would recommend is to any hunter in the true sense of the word.

I'm not much for writing or expressing my feelings about the outdoors. I cannot express in words the love I have for puppies, old friends, homemade lures and duckcalls. Gene Hill can. The short stories you'll read in "A hunters fireside book" will make you smile on a cold night in winter when he speaks of things handmade and bring a tear to your eye when he describes an old dog you'll swear you knew. Reading Gene Hill is very a lot like listening to an old friend tell you his very best stories over a glass of 18 year old scotch; it doesn't get any better...................

A brilliant collection of anecdotes

Gene Hill is an unusual combination - a superb sportsman and an equally superb writer. This book is a collection of monthly columns written for Guns & Ammo magazine. It is full of the wit and wisdom of a man who loves the outdoors and who has the voice to describe its incomparable beauty in just the right words. Favorite guns and dogs, sunrise in a duck blind, the mystery of a hunter's moon, camaraderie and compassion. The insights and perception of Mr. Hill, complimented by the incomparable artwork of Milton C. Weiler, make this a must.

It's a keeper.

Gene Hill's book is a tremendous collection of stories to which anyone who has cherished times afield can relate. This book will undoubtedly be passed around among friends and family and ultimately end up next to the fireplace where it belongs. And I expect that I will read from it often as this book will never get old.

If you're looking for a good book to tell how the old days were, they don't get any better than this. Gene Hill has mastered the art of telling the story with just enough of the truth to keep it real, but also keep it fun. If you hunt or fish, this is your kind of book.

Great Introduction to the World of Upland Game Bird Hunting

Review Date: 2001-11-07
This book reads like an introductory encyclopedia for upland game bird hunting. It gives you a very good overall view of most aspects of this type of hunt. For the novice it is perfect in that it goes through all what it entails to go upland game bird hunting, as well as covers practically all species you could hunt for. The strength is that it covers most everything - what it lacks in depth does not quite matter as other litterature is available for the one that seeks to "dig in" further. I clearly recommend this book both for the novice as well as the expert that would need a reference guide.

This is a great book for beginner upland hunters. As with all "hunting and Fishing Library" books I have read this one is well written and has incredible pictures. It has great sections on guns, tactics and techniques for finding birds and even a review of dogs suitable for upland hunting.

Informative, quality book with great photographs

This quality, but inexpensive, book provides an informative overview of upland bird hunting, with chapters on shotgun basics & equipment, and separate chapters on all major North American upland birds.

The excellent photography & layout compliments the analysis of each bird species, its habitat, and how best to hunt them, as well as introducing the various hunting dog breeds.

This book should be in every upland hunter's library--novice and experienced hunter alike.

(This is another excellent book in the Hunting & Fishing Library--anyone who has read the Wild Turkey, Deer, Trout, Fly Tying, or Duck Hunting volumes will know what I'm talking about!)

This is a very nice little book. It gives beautiful color photos of the game. There is a nice section on some beautiful dogs and a practical guide on guns and equipment.

The Western USA style of hunting is a little different than the classical British and European style that I favor, but we can certainly all get along here.

This book was clearly done by someone who loves the birds, the dogs and a day in field.

Upland Game Birds (The Hunting & Fishing Library) by Dick Sternberg is such a wonderful book. Re-reading it I was reminded of when I was a kid and my Dad who was also my hero, would come home from hunting and head for the cooling room in the garage and hang the pheasants and ducks he had gotten up to age.

We would have great conversations and start talking about wildrice and mushroom stuffing and all the great dinners we would enjoy in the winter months from the game he brought home.

Dick Sternberg is such a gifted writer and reading his books you find yourself awed by the photos and graphics and like the best classes you remember from school you realize that learning can be fun as well as worthwhile.

With pheasant season just weeks away I am looking forward to trying some of the recipes in the book that I have not tried yet. And the recipes are easy to follow and do not require you to travel 50 miles to some quaint overpriced shop to buy some spice listed since everything he uses can be found at your local grocer. Unless you live in the Alaska wilderness.

As a retired FBI agent, I am finally impressed with a realistic presentation of a multiagency task force investigation. Hunting the American Terrorist captures the array of human emotions that motivate and complicate big cases. Readers will be able to enter the bull pen and proceed through the complex world of colorful personalities and bewildering puzzles that make up the daily successes and failures of an actual investigation. HAT should be required reading for anyone considering a career in law enforcement.

An Important Primer for all Forensic Scientists and Students...and a Great Read

Review Date: 2007-08-10
As a forensic psychiatrist, I believe this is an extremely important book, which works on many levels. First of all, it is the ultimate page-turner true life crime story, told by the ultimate insiders. Turchie and Puckett let their tale of hunting the Unabomber and other domestic terrorists unfold as they experienced it, allowing us a rare view of the politics and personalities that presented assistance and obstacles along the way. Told in a matter-of-fact voice, and absent the rigid and self-congratulatory tone that rightly diminishes lesser "insider" true crime books, the authors reveal their methods to us: pain-staking attention to detail, thinking outside the ultimate bureaucratic box, and, in the Unabomb case, the careful maintenance of an inquisitive and open mind in the face of FBI profilers unwilling to adapt to new evidence.

The first half of the book concentrates on the successful search for and arrest of Theodore Kaczynski, with a fascinating look at the relationship developed by Agent Puckett and Kaczynski's brother, which has evidently remained intact as David Kaczynski provides a back cover review. Puckett served as the Behavioral Analyst on the Unabomb task force, and provides unique insights into Kaczynski's personality, decision-making, and motives.

The second half of the book discusses Puckett's study of American Lone Wolf Domestic Terrorists. The reader learns the value and method of taking a multi-disciplinary approach to understanding these offenders, as Puckett takes us on an investigative "road trip," visiting law enforecment officers, forensic scientists, and mental health experts who worked on the cases. It is rare that these disciplines reach out to each other, but each could benefit from the others knowledge and expertise. Puckett's study is the template for this type of collaboration. This is the heart of the book, and is an invaluable manual for those who hunt terrorists, domestic and foreign.

Captivating story

The FBI's head agent in charge of the Unabomber Task Force and one of the FBI's top behavioral analyst combine to write a fascinating book on the homegrown terrorists that have plagued our country in recent memory.
The criminal cases of Theodore Kaczynski, Timothy McVeigh and Eric Rudolph are the primary focus of the book. I can only imagine the monotony that might come from spending thousands of man hours tracking down false leads and suspects; but you won't find any of that here. Author Terry Turchie keeps the events fast paced and interesting.
My favorite part of the book is the telling of David and Linda Kaczynski's heroic role in the Unabomber case. They are the brother and sister-in-law of Theodore Kaczynski and their sense of duty born of a most difficult situation are very inspiring.
I came away with a new found respect for Louis Freeh and Janet Reno. In an age of a centralized FBI, this book credits their leadership that allowed agent Turchie to put in place new ideas and procedures that led to solving these cases. His methods were sometimes extremely controversial but ultimately lead to the capture and conviction of the Unabomber and drove Eric Rudolph deeply underground.
Agent Kathleen Puckett wrote Part II of the book. In it she details her work in providing a monumental psychological study of ten homegrown American terrorists. She established a set of criteria and conclusions that looked at the behavioral aspects of these ten criminals and labeled it the `Lone Wolf' mindset.
Hunting The American Terrorist is a book that is hard to put down. Although I knew the outcome and fate of the Unabomber, reading the story of how these two key FBI agents finally `get their man' is compelling.

Fascinating story, read it in one sitting. Finally the true story of the Unabom investigation and the dedicated group of people who worked tirelessly to solve the case. The book also demonstrates that the lessons learned from that investigation assisted in the identification of Eric Rudolph . Recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn the true story of the Unabom investigation.

I wrote this autobiographical book as a result of a lifetime of work locating and shipwrecks and sunken cities in over 60 countries around the world and decided to share my adventures with the readers of this book. It started with my building a home-made diving helmet at the age of l2 and almost getting killed using it, to my first discovery of gold at the age of l5 on a California Gold Rush ship and then on to hundreds of other old shipwrecks dating between l000 BC up to modern day shipwrecks.

My most recent discovery was that of one of Magellan's ships lost in l522 off Borneo. Not only does the reader experience the jubliations of my discovery of countless treasures, but also the hardships such as attacks by modern-day pirates and sharks, treasures found and then lost to unscrupulous governments and being captured by terrorists in Lebanon while working on a Phoencian shipwreck. I hope the reader gets as much enjoyment from this book as I have from living the kind of life that most people would enjoy having done. Robert F. Marx

Lou Tabory spells out every step and stage of how to fly fish in the salt for striped bass in this book! His writing is easily understandable and intelligent. He explains how to use the water to bring your flies to the fish, how to determine where the fish should be in many different types of water, which flies to choose in certain conditions and why, and he does all this is a manner that even a non-fly fisherman can understand!

He also introduces you to his flies, all are simple, all are well thought out and very effective! I've been fly fishing the suds for 10 years now and have come to reply on more than a few of Mr. Tabory's patterns, they are simply ingenious! Like I said, should be required reading!

I've been reading--and rereading--Corbett for more years than I can remember. They not only tell the tales of his hunting man-eating tigers and leopards but tell of his wonderful love of nature, the land and the simple hill people of India. His descriptions and attention to detail are remarkable. You can practically smell the Himalayan foothills that he loved so much.

Corbett, although "just" a public servant had an unusual combination of talents and virtues. His woodcraft was exceptional; his stamina phenomenal; his courage phenomenal; and his talent as a writer...unique. Corbett puts the reader in his own skin as he tracks beasts that would like nothing better than to sink their teeth in his throat. The reader is actually present as Corbett comes on the scene of a recent tiger kill as evidenced by the single shapely leg of a young woman. You feel his terror as a man-eating leopard, in the dead of night, rejects his goat bait and tries to rip Corbett from his machan high in a tree.

You suffer with Corbett as he tries to maintain his lonely all-night vigil over a tiger-killed buffalo as malaria shakes his body apart and you rejoice with him as he fights the mighty mahseer from pool to pool in the icy waters of the Himalayas. You weep with Corbett as poor, frightened people thank him for ridding them of beasts that have destroyed lives and the economies of entire regions.

At the same time you get to know Corbett the field biologist and nature lover. He bore no animosity for the man-eaters he hunted to death. He entirely recognized that they were a part of nature whose only "crime" was to develop a taste for the "wrong" kind of food. He speaks of the nobility of the tiger, the sinuous beauty of the leopard and bemoans the fact that these creatures were gradually being eradicated. Nevertheless he takes justifiable pride in saving the lives of so many people and is grieved that he couldn't have saved many more.

Some people have questioned as to whether Corbett did all these things or whether, like Capstick, he was simply a gifted writer. I can't confirm the authenticity of all the stories but, all I can say, is that the government of India--that has no particular love for British colonialism--chose to honor this particular Englishman by naming a national park--a park containing many tigers and leopards--in his honor.

I have read all three of the books included in this omnibus many times over the space of thirty years. Each is a superb read filled with suspense, observations on nature, and a genuine respect for India and it's people. These are not books about hunting for the sake of senseless slaughter. While Corbett vividly communicates a sense of suspense and excitement he continually returns to the theme of sympathy for the plight of the impoverished villagers who are terrorized by the man-eaters he hunts. There is no macho posturing in Corbett's accounts, there is heartfelt regret each time he pulls the trigger to end the rampage of another killer.

I have been an avid reader of Jim Corbett for the past decade. Though he hasn't authored as many books so as to demand a decade, his story-telling is exquisite and therefore begs you to pick up his memoirs again and again. What were previously an assortment of separate short stories have now been compiled into this grand collection.

Armed with but a rifle, Corbett narrates in intricate detail how he managed to hunt down some of the deadliest man-eaters, deep in the northern jungles of pre-independent India. As much as it is a classic, one needs to remember that the events described herein, actually occurred! The narration seamlessly alternates between the romantic splendor of the Himalayan foothills and the imminent danger lurking not far behind. Corbett magnanimously describes in great detail the courage displayed by several individual men, women and children of these jungles when taking on man-eaters at close quarters. That the events described are factual makes you shudder even while sitting in the quiet comfort of your living room.

Parallels could be drawn between Corbett and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes" due to fact that they both decipher more than the average individual when given the same set of information. Much like Holmes, Corbett interprets the gender, age, physical characteristics, possible injuries (and cause thereof), direction of approach etc. of the man-eater by just studying it's pug marks. The only incorrect assumption he makes is that tigers do not have a sense of smell. I recently found out that this was untrue. Nevertheless, to the armchair hunter, this triviality can be ignored. An excellent read.

Adventure for boys and young men

This book is a collection of some of Jim Corbett's books, and it is really worth the expense to anyone who enjoys a good read. A bit of tongue-in-cheek, but very factual and understated, this book also describes life in India when it was the jewel in the British crown.

The author is a widely respected "shikari" who is ever ready to help simple village folk against wild animals who have turned vermin. However, he loves nature, and one can see how he revels in describing natural landscapes. He went on to become a very well-known conservationist, and the Indian Government has honoured him by naming the area he has described in his books as a National Park, with his name.

In the books, he describes how he learned to be a woodsman, and describes outdoor living in great detail. He describes a time when motoring was very rare, when the easiest way to travel was to depend on one's own two feet and a lot of "knee grease". His loving descriptions of nature, landscapes, jungles and jungle lore mark him as an environmentalist beyond any of today's known figures.

A must-read for anyone who enjoys reading.

If I could give this book a higher rating I would! The best job guide that I have ever read.I purchased Knock `Em Dead 1992 by chance. Desperate for a guide that was actually going to help. This is, without a doubt the best book I have ever purchased. This book is responsible for the success of myself and my friends. We fondly refer to it as "The Red Book" (as the issue I purchased had a red cover). I can honestly say that this book is the catalyst for the process that has given me the vast majority of my current salary. It guided me through the entire job seeking process and made the task a simple one. After reading this book the job interviews I attended were simple. At first I thought that the interviewers had read the book because they kept asking me questions from the book (word for word) and, because I had read this book I had the model answer for all of them. Nothing could trip me up. After a few interviews it became very clear that the interviewers had not read this book but the book had essentially "read the interviewers" and supplied the basis for answers to all questions. It would be unfair to mention just the interview section of the book as it provides a full guide from the beginning of the process (leaving) to the end (signing the gold plated contract). I would not like to think about where I would be in my career now if I had not found this book. I am sure that I would be better off than I was at the time of purchase but nowhere near the level that I now enjoy. Martin Yate is a genius, I doubt there has ever been nor will be a book that could outshine this work of art. I have ordered the latest copy of this book and eagerly await its arrival. I thoroughly enjoyed Lion Hound by Jim Kjelgaard when I was a child going to school in Prairie Grove, Arkansas. I treasure my memories of this story and I wish I could locate a decent copy. I'm surprised Disney didn't make this one into a movie.

I read this wonderful book when I was a school boy. I still consider it my favorite book today--35 years later! I just received an out-of-print copy from my beloved girl friend as a gift. She couldn't have choosen a more appropriate surprise gift for me. Her gift touched me deeply. What a great family read aloud book.

I first read this book when I was in 5th Grade. I have always been interested in the Outdoors. This book guides us through an extraordinary adventure with a boy, his older friend, their dogs and a mean old Mountain Lion which they all hunt. It's filled with suspense, and will keep anyone glued to the book. Excellent Read! You'll most likely have to check it out at the library. It's tough to find!

A great, simple read to get excited about

Jim Kjelgaard's books are filled with excitement and a healthy appreciation for a rugged way of life in the great outdoors, and while Lion Hound may not be his best effort, it has all of the trademarks that make this a book well worth reading. The clean prose brings us into the story with an immediacy that many more literary authors fail to achieve.

The main characters are the old, wise mountaineer Jake Kane, the young and good-hearted Johnny Torrington, and Buck, the titular Lion Hound who is raised to be of use to his human companions.

As in many Kjelgaard books, we get a vicarious thrill from watching Buck progress from puppyhood to his prime, against a backdrop of beautiful wilderness and sometimes-harsh conditions.

The three friends are plagued by a mountain lion, a formidable predator made all the more dangerous by a stint in captivity.

The plot is filled with action-packed conflicts, and interesting details about life in the outdoors. There are some life lessons in here that should be appreciated by any parent, but the book never preaches. It's simply a good, solid act of storytelling that is reminiscent of Louis Lamour for its simplicity and ability to captivate.

I recommend all of the Kjelgaard books, and that certainly includes this one. I would start with another selection (Snow Dog, Wild Trek, and Big Red are some of my favorites), but there are no losers in this series. Enjoy!

If you are in the testing process for any level of supervision, this is an excellent resource to add to your pool of "advice". Take it, and use it as a guidebook. Add to it, delete parts that dont work, and make it work for you.

This text is a plan that works !

Unlike some of todays Fire Service, Chief Kastros understands leadership. This text clearly outlines a plan to test successfully and more importantly to be a successful leader after promotion. I speak from personal experience. Andoni has been instrumental in my career. If you are testing..you need this book.
