A wonderful book for those that either remember the Cherry Hill area from a bygone time, or those that wish to see what their area was like before they were born. This book stays on topic, is concise and is full of photographs that remind those that remember of a time that Cherry Hill rivaled Philadelphia, Atlantic City and other Mega attraction areas. The photos and narrative bring back the memories and sights that can not be found elsewhere.

Daniel Pinkwater is noteworthy in many respects, but what fascinates me most is the way in which he manages to be brilliant, moving, and profound without ever accentuating the negative. This autobiographical collection of brief, bite-size narratives (perfect for bedtime, the bathroom, or the ten-minute break at work) chronicles Pinkwater's development as an artist/writer, and gives the reader the opportunity to enjoy the world through the eyes of a funny, intelligent man who truly loves life. This is a non-fiction, non-children's book by a children's author.

An essential referance for any Civil War Library. The amount of facts and photos will not be found in any other work. Hopefully Mr. Hunt will come out with the other volumes in the series on a regular and shorter time frame. Kudos and thankyou Mr. Hunt.

Mike Kelly does an incredibly thorough and fair job of exploring the events surrounding the police shooting of a black youth and how this incident transformed a "model" suburban town. As someone who grew up in Teaneck during the racial turmoil Kelly writes about, this book has special signficance for me. I recommend it to those looking to explore the complexities of race in America and how small-town institutions--the police, the clergy, and the local government--each play an important role in this issue. I especially recommend it to anyone from Teaneck because it paints a very accurate portrait of the town while offering some remarkable new insights.

I've owned a copy of this book for 30 years and still refer to it. There's nothing the least bit fancy about it -- it's a "bulletin" of the New Jersey extension service, printed in black and white with a plastic comb binding. It covers about 100 of the trees you're most likely to find in NJ forests. Each tree gets two pages: one page with precise line drawings of the leaf, fruit, and twig, and one page with a no-nonsense description of where the tree typically grows, how to identify it, what it has been used for, etc. In terms of production values, it can't hold a candle to more recent tree books, but in terms of usefulness in making IDs and building your "tree vocabulary," it's hard to beat.

Anyone who cares about the preservation of traditional Irish skills will find this book fascinating. Cheesemaking, weaving, and other skills requiring devotion, creativity, imagination, and dedication are referenced here in a "meet the artisans" photo and narrative format. Anyone who is planning to lead a tour in Ireland would also find it useful as a reference to areas where tourism is minimal and real Ireland abounds.

Covenant of Care: A Jewish Hospital Turned Worldly

Commissioned to mark the centennial of a remarkable health care institution, this tale traces its birth, growth and development, maturity, and rebirth into a charitable health care foundation, as the hospital itself, under new ownership, continues to serve the community as a leading tertiary center providing cutting-edge quality care.
Originally established to serve the early Jewish community, Newark Beth Israel has witnessed a profound ethnic and cultural transformation, as the neighborhood in which it is located has seen the exodus of its Jewish nucleus and the multicultural influx of African, African-American, Latino, European, and Asian populations, each of which challenges the institution to provide culturally sensitive and economically accessible medical care.
The character of "The Beth," as it is known, is reflected in the stories of individuals whose names, while perhaps unfamiliar to those unacquainted with its history, are instantly recognized by anyone who has ever labored within its walls.
The authors, one a historian and the other a civil servant, describe an institution where care is as important as cure. Here, the reader can appreciate how a philosophy of humanism, and sincere dedication, can drive a successful health care enterprise faced with the vicissitudes of a frequently uncertain health care environment.

A wonderful peek back at Cranford's early years

Cranford is a town that has maintained that small town feeling over one hundred years after its founding. This book, and its predecessor, shows how Cranford has changed, and how in many ways it has remained unchanged. The Rahway River continues to define much of the town's character. The Victorian downtown looks little different in pictures from the 1920s. Fridlington and Fuhro have captured Cranford through the photos selected in these books. Both old time and new residents will appreciate both collections.
