This is one great book that gives tons of good information that is very useful. The detail to which it's author Jim L. Cox goes into is just outstanding and it will keep you reading for hours and hours as you learn so much about the state of Mississippi. This is one book that stays on my desk all the time to supply me with all sorts of information which I put to good use almost everyday. An almanac is a special format which can really be helpful to open the doors of learning on a particular subject and this subject, Mississippi, is covered to the maximum.

I had this book for almost a year before I read it, but once I did I couldn't imagine why I hadn't read it sooner. The man, Karl Wolfe, I didn't know, but through the book his truely poetic nature comes alive. And while, most of the book isn't about his painting you get a genuine veiw of an artist, by an artist.

My husband and I recently moved to Mississippi and seen that we have alot of different species of birds in our backyard. We hung up a few birdfeeders and needed this book to help identify all the different kinds of birds. This book was a real help! It not only lists the birds but also what they eat, their nesting habits, if they migrate and so much more. "Mississippi Bird Watching: A Year-Round Guide" was well worth the money. I ended up buying another one for a friend. If you are a beginner birdwatcher I'd highly recommend this book.

This book is fascinating for any blues or history lover. My husband bought it--we both read it and have passed it on--it is on it's way to a different state with a friend and we are buying another copy which we will also share with friends and family. Really makes one understand and appreciate REAL blues and what it has done to influence all kinds of music through the years. Highly recommend especially for music and history teachers as well as musicians.

I had to do a Research Accuracy paper for my College English class, between "Mississippi Burning" the movie and the actual events of the case. Well, because of this books layout and detail it allowed me to have a true understanding of the actual events. I scored an A on my paper because it was an awesome book. Harvey Fireside you did a great job.

Mississippi Challenge

This book was written for teenagers, I think and has won at least one important award (Coretta Scott King, I think). But it's a very good introduction to an intricate political situation, actually a long history of oppression. Well researched and dispassionately written, these facts that show part of the injustices at every level during the Civil Rights Movement. It is everyone's history, but it's part of a large body of nearly erased history. Called a challenge because there is not a clear win, is demonstrates many of the shameful aspects of our democratic system. Particularly pertinent at a time of cries for campaign reform. Kudos to the author, Mildred Pitts Walter!

A Must Have for Collectors of Southern Writers
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-09
I have a collection of books written by Southern writers. Although this is a poetry book, it provides rich pictures of people from the past. From the poetry, one is able to gain a historical perspective of life in the 1950s and 1960s. Mrs. Feild has a talent for creating characters that we all know; ones we love and hate. Through the use of words, Mrs. Feild creates vivid images that often have a sharp twist. I think that all who purchase this book will enjoying reading about these interesting Southern people.

If you are going to practice any domestic relations law in Mississippi, this book is a must have. It will tell you everything from start to finish. The author is very good at telling you what you need to know to actually go out and handle the issues in court. I used it for several years in practice and it really helped me from constantly getting on Westlaw.
