STRANGE DUETS: IMPRESARIOS & ACTRESSES IN THE AMERICAN THEATRE, 1865-1914 is particularly notable for its survey of males who made stars of females in the stage of the times. These male sponsors and their female talents challenged conventional theatre and these protegees gained wealth and celebrity status comparable to Hollywood stars today. Associate professor Kim Marra's college-level, scholarly analysis uses the lives and experiences of three impresario-actresses to discuss and analyze the social and theatre conditions of their times. Chapters survey their achievements, ground-breaking routines, and breakthroughs into Broadway theatre, making for an essential theatre history survey for any college-level holding strong in theatre history.

A strong analysis based on numerous primary sources

Dr. Johnson has written a moving portrait of Tinker v. Des Moines, a major 1960s Supreme Court decision. The "Struggle" that he discusses deals with the right of non-violent expression while in the confines of a public school. The narrative is richly grounded in newspaper articles, interviews, and letters to and from the primary individuals. This makes the story extremely personal and enlightening. An in-depth look into the workings of the Supreme Court may be the book's most profound contribution. Taking a controversial stand in time of war is never easy. The Tinker case shows that the heart of our democracy rests with those who dare to point us in a different direction.

A must have for poetry lovers everywhere. Elizabeth's domestic slant is fresh and at times both humorous and surprising. She shines in a Southern "quirkiness" that is all her own.

This book was presented to every kindergartener in Iowa as a gift from Iowa's first lady Christie Vilsack to encourage our newest students to enjoy reading. The relationship built between the US state of Iowa and the Japanese sister-state, prefecture of Yamanashi is the common bond for this story. People helping people get through tragedies provides the setting of the story which is written in both English and Japanese. In a time beset with international turmoil, it is comforting to see two groups with a history of setting an example of how we can overcome barriers and produce a better world through friendship and active support.

In Tales from the Iowa Sidelines award winning author Ron Maly covers Ferentz's highlights at Iowa. Experience the rich history through the memories of captain Erwin Prasse and teammate George Frye as the flash back to 1939 Ironmen team led by Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick. Look at Howard Jones's unbeaten teams in 1921 and 1922. Forest Evashevski's two Rose Bowl championship teams in the 1950s and how Fry brought Iowa back from the scrap heap in the 1980s and 1990s. The author describes the interesting All-Americans Calvin Jones and Alex Karras, and a story how former star Bob Stoops placed his Rose Bowl ring on his father's casket and why the 1985 Hawkeyes were ranked number 1 nationally for five weeks. The Iowa Football team was looking for a new coach it was former Iowa star Bob Stoops or Kirk Ferentz, Stoops was looking towards Oklahoma but he wasn't offered the job. You should read this book if you want to know about the rich Hawkeye history or you are a fan that is crazy about the hawkeyes. The book has some main points about how Kirk Ferentz came to the team and brought a 0-8 to 8-0 in the Big Ten.
