THIS IS A FUN READ
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.

Ron Roberts has written 10 books, each one a gem. He is Professor of Sociology at the
University of Northern Iowa. He has always written pretty much what he wanted to write.
His books are a pleasure to read, as they take the reader through all the twists and turns of life.

Ordinary Ghosts tells the story of a small town in Iowa, where Ron Roberts grew up. By the time you are
done reading this book you will know some of the people, a few of the ghosts, and a lot
more than you ever wanted to know about such a place. Then again, as the book is so much fun to read,
my bet is you will sell your home in the city and move your family to Iowa. Ordinary Ghosts grabs you and
will not let go.

Excellent for Dramaturgs
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-17
Recently, I was the dramaturg for A Midsummer Night's Dream. One of the primary jobs of the dramaturg is to research the production history of the play, and as my teacher once told me, "There's no point in re-inventing the wheel." This being said, Our Moonlight Revels is a great place to start.

Beginning with the original production and moving to the present, Williams explores several productions of this classical play. He hits all the major productions, such as Peter Brook's 1970 production, Beerholm Tree's 1900 production, and productions by Kean, Vestris, and Reinhardt. The book is divided by theory rather than chronologically. There are chapters devoted to the Wedding-play myth, Modernism and Post-Modernism, Scenic images of the "Empire." Of course no book, can be able to explore every single production of A Midsummer Night's Dream in the last four hundred years, but Williams' book gives one landmark productions that can be used for further research. One book can't tell you everything, you have to do some research on your own, but Williams at least can point you in the right direction.

The book contains several production photos both in color and in black and white.

It is good for people today to read of the experiences of refugees of W. W. II. Lest we forget!! The Quakers (Friends) were the salvation for l85 refugees l939-45, assimilating them into American culture and referring to them as guests rather than refugees.

Excellent survey of an Iowa community--one not well covered elsewhere. Definitely worth buying, despite the price.

If you're African-American with Iowa roots, you will probably see pictures of people your grandparents and parents knew, and places your ancestors saw. But anyone will find this book interesting since it covers so many topics and includes wonderful old photographs.

There are a few areas I wish received more coverage, like migration into Iowa and where from. But I've heard a rumor that the editor is planning a second volumn; hopefully they will cover these areas then. I hope so.

It is much more inclusive than the title suggests

I met the first edition 30 years ago in the U. of Illinois library, when I was in graduate school. Now, a full fledged medical and veterinary parasitologist, I had a second chance and . . . I just had to have it! Not because it was necessary to my work but because I remembered it as a jewel of a book. I hesitated a bit because the price was kind of steep for just a memento. Boy, but what a memento! The tight text and tiny letters are rarely interrupted by illustrations, and these are usually photographs; of only average quality, they are of exceptional content. It does not cover all the comon parasitic infections (the way they treat them, it would take an encyclopedia to do so!) but only the major ones. The survey of each infection, however, goes much farther than one would expect for a book on "wild mammals." It reviews (and references) a large part of the recent literature as it applies to any host; wild, domestic, or human. I found that it quickly gained a place among my favorite references. If you are interested in Parasitology at all, you MUST get it. You can't afford to wait another 30 years for the next edition.

This book should set the standard for pathology color atlases and texts. The figures are excellent and the text provides a large amount of information and numerous references. Anyone working with mice in medical research should have this book.

In the thick of it with the 166th Photo Signal Company.
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1997-08-28
In a most unmilitary way, World War II Army authorities actually found men with professional skills to become combat cameramen, instead of training farmers and mechanics in the usual fashion. The present work illustrates the wisdom of this strategy.
This particular unit, broken up into small detachments and spread among all of the Third Army's elements, was present at all the major engagements and events from Normandy to Prague, winning many decorations and leaving a legacy of striking images. A good selection of these are included, as well as some remarks and essays by the veterans of the 166th. That some reflect the fog of war and unreliability of memory in no way reduces the value and interest of the pictures and text here.
Highly recommended for military history readers, WWII buffs, and photography students.

Peak Performance for Aerobatics

If you are serious about aerobatics, get this book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-20
"Today's aerobatic pilots have available some of the finest engineered aerobatic airplanes the sport has ever known. Yes, sometimes these airplanes fail, but more often, it is the pilot flying the airplane who fails, and this failure is due to the lack of mental control. In terms of both precision and safety, aerobatics required absolute mental control by the pilot."

Excellent book that brings modern sports psychology to the demanding world of aerobatics. Mental training, neurology and energetics are all covered. The mindset of excellence. Introduction by first lady of aerobatics Patty Wagstaff.
