Very smoothly written and easy to follow.

The book starts with the birth of Cedar Falls, and then moves into the beginning of the war and the call for volunteers. Two different companies were formed from Cedar Falls, and the book follows them both through the war in a very smooth and chronological order. You get to know a few individuals from each company really well through Kenneth's writing.

Also you get to see and feel what the town reaction through out the war was like. Their feelings, their emotions, their hopes and dreams.

Mr. Lyftogt really did some outstanding research into this work. And I was hooked from the first day. This certainly was a book that once I picked it up, I didn't want to put it down.

I consider Bogue's book to be an excellent research source for people interested in mid-19th century agriculture. It covers every aspect of agriculture during the formative years of Iowa and Illinois, and provides an ample beginning for someone looking to do research in this field.

"From Watt to Clausius" provides a fascinating account of the way advances in engineering drove the development of the science of thermodynamiacs during the early year of the industrial revolution. It gives the reader a clear sense of who the important players were on both sides, and, more important, what their motivations were, and it is a pleasure to read because it is well written.

The Diocese of Sioux City was erected by a letter dated Jan 15, 1902 and this book is written to relate the history of the diocese through its first hundred years, and of the area it covers from 1664 to the present day. The author has done a good job and he tells the very interesting story of the past 100 years well.

Good scholarship, and a fascinating read, too!

I found this book well researched, well-written, and absolutely fascinating. It describes the lives and contributions of women on the frontier, as Iowa was in the 1840's through 1870. It covers women's work, their homes, their family lives, their work outside the home -- I found particularly interesting the study of the impact of the Civil War on women's lives, and of women's work to support the war effort. Since most histories of the frontier experience concentrate on men, this work fills a gap by illuminating a largely ignored facet.

from the book flap: With infinite patience they observed nest building, mating, egg laying, incubating, brooding, and care of the young...They came to feel accepted by the kinglet families they watched and were able to feed them by hand, pick them up, weigh them, and band them with no resistance or alarm...As he relates the stories of Noodnik, the fidelity of the kinglet parents, the nestlings who lost a parent, the female who confused her nest buidling with feeding her young, and many others, the reader will come to share their feelings of closeness with this forest creature.

This book is a collection of papers that were presented at the 1998 International Colloquium on Grammatical Inference. Grammatical inference is a subfield of machine learning, inductive inference, and pattern classification. Applications of grammatical inference include speech recognition and speech production, computational molecular biology, information extraction, and music composition, among others. The articles included in the book are representative of some of the best current work in grammatical inference. I enthusiastically recommend the book to anyone interested in learning about the current advances in this subfield of machine learning.
