Anyone living in the Southeast (Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee) will find this travel book to be a practical and useful tool. The author, Eleanor Berman, pairs seasonal activities and local attractions with various locales. For me, this opened my eyes to the many enjoyable short trips my family and I can take without going too far from home. The book contains telephone numbers, driving directions and suggestions for accommodations and restaurants that I likely would never have discovered on my own. My family and I have stayed in several of the book's recommended bed and breakfasts and have been delighted. I keep this book handy to refer to for travel ideas. I reccommend it highly as a thorough and "user friendly" guide to travel in the Southeast.

Bacon's Eye-the closest focal point through his instincts
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-16
This soft cover book is the best collection to date of Bacon's instinct's on photo's as "a record" for motion and emotion, which led, as far as I am concerned, to his "violent colours and form's" that produce an "incredible, emotional charge which is "an impressive sort of violence".People often speak of Bacon's work's as violent, but Bacon said himself that he never saw any violence(in terms of a negative, painful meaning) in his work's.Bacon did see a violent execution in Picasso's work's through colour and form.
Bacon did state his work's were positively charged with incredible emotion's through his colours and forms which might be veiwed as violent ,but in the positive.I also feel, as Bacon did, that word's diminish an artist's work's, so that is why I am qouting him so often from the book "Francis Bacon In conversation with Michel Archimbaud".Bacon's Eye is full of photo's, some of his early unseen work's, and his use of colour and form after veiwing the photo's in the book. There is also an interview with Barry Joule, a close friend of Bacon, at the end of the book.
Bacon gave Joule a thousand never seen work's on paper before his death. This book has only some of them, and I would love to see the remainder if ever published some day, but you will get a much indepth look at Bacon's work from the one's supplied. This book is not to be passed by if you want something rare and intimate of the artist. If you were to compare this book to the one other book featuring Bacon's drawing's, which name I can not recall right now, Bacon's Eye is ten times better. It also has different textured paper for the plates and the interview section.

Bartow County Caves - History Underground in North Georgia
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-10
This book is 162 pages long in an 8.5 X 11 inch format. It is generously illustrated with numerous photographs and maps. Items of interest covered in this book are the geology of the caves, their history from prehistoric use by Native Americans, early use by Caucasian settlers, saltpeter mining, especially during the Civil War, and vertebrate paleontology.

Part I of this book is an introduction to the Physical Setting, Geology, Biology, Paleontology, Archaeology, and History of the caves of this northwest Georgia county. Part II consists of detailed descriptions of 32 caves. This is not intended to be a comprehensive study of all the caves in Bartow County, Georgia, but it features those caves that have exceptional historical or scientific features. An extensive Bibliography at the end of the book will aid serious researchers.

The edition of this book that I have is softback and the price on the bar code on the rear cover is $20.00. This book is not Out-Of-Print, to the best of my knowledge, and is probably available through the National Speleological Society, which helped fund this study.

The author states in the Foreward: "In order to protect the caves and the rights of their owners no cave locations are given."

Anyone interested in caves and their history will enjoy this book.

A great way to learn about the Civil War
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-27
This is a genuinely fun way to learn about the Civil War while touring a beautiful section of Atlanta. It's especially nice on a Sunday morning when there is little traffic and you have time to really stop and listen to certain stories or look at certain places. The contrast between the sometimes gory narrative and the peaceful beauty of contemporary Atlanta is fascinating and makes you think about how it must have been over a hundred years ago when war ravaged the city and the country. Very strange and very stimulating. Also, the last stop is a great place for a picnic and a chance to walk around and stretch and think about everything the author of the tape has told you. Really great and definitely recommend it for yourself and your family.

My friend sent me this book for helping her explore cake decorating. It is really a beautiful book, the format much like her first, cookies, minicakes, and large cakes. Very up to date on current cake trends and techniques. Very easy to follow. Cakes are mainly deorated with rolled fondant and royal icing. I haven't tried the recipes, so I can't tell you anything there. There are some very beautiful ideas in these book if you can get your hands on a copy.

Reactionarism and the Ku Klux Klan

Utilizing the mind frame of Paul Fussell and his contemporaries that the Great War catalyzed the transformation of European and the western world from traditional to modernity. Nancy McLean advances the paradigm that a countermovement to resist the new values and norms such feminism, corporatism, unionism, and globalization. This movement developed under the auspices of the Ku Klux Klan, which contained motifs of populism, emphasis of race, gender, and age (biological) antagonisms over class and national sovereignty. The fervor populism sponsored by the conservative forces in Athens, Georgia was similar in context to the fascist organizations that occurred in Italy and Germany in an attempt to turn back the clock on ethic morals. Yet unlike its German or Italian counterparts failed to firmly take root in politics due to the brevity of the depression and boom. These characteristics manifested themselves into morality crusades to reinforce traditional norms over modern ones, but moreover the patriarchal, social, hierarchy. These inspired the reinforcement of the prohibition of liquor consumption; reconstitute the obedience to one's parents. It caused a heightened proliferation of spying and becoming turncoats on one's neighbors. Along with other fascist organizations held contradictory beliefs suggesting the development of chain stores and national/international companies were exclaimed as instruments of Catholics and Jews to dominate the U.S. economy, and yet were Bolsheviks. To exterminate this external threat from abroad, citizens joined together to boycott these conglomerates and support locally owned shops. The Klan projected powerful images of Black men raping white women in an attempt to outrage their targeted constituents to gain members and consolidate man's power over their subordinates namely women. The other catalyst regarding this movement regarded the economic depression that occurred in 1924 thus sparked a growing animosity towards people's perceived class enemies-Catholics, Jews, and Eastern European immigrants. Which had largely been absent during one of the largest immigration period in 1880. The primary purpose was to insure the independence and propriety of the middle class. Thus attempted to prevent any further declining down the socio-economic status ladder from the upper class and utilize force when necessary when workers movements occurred in threatening their livelihood

Compulsive extraordinary history
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2002-05-01
Imagine a history book which deals with one of the hardest and most riveting periods of world history. Imagine it written in an accessible and entertaining style. Imagine that it brings home the hopes, fears, sufferings and achievements of real people, that it be sensitive and analytical of their predicaments and responses, that it rests on hundreds of hours of interviews, thousands of reading and more of careful preperation. Imagine all this and you will be ready for Beyond Atlanta.

Stephen Tuck has written fantastic book accessible to the scholar and student and a must for any Georgian (indeed American) interested in their past. The quality of his research and writing sets new standards for historians. The scope of a work which covers a state, in urban and rural, in its detail and its broader implications deserves to be imitated.

But perhaps the crowning achievement of this book is that it is so interesting. There are hundreds of thousands of scholalry peices attracting dust on library shelves which are not really missed. Here is a book on a vital topic which both needs to be read and is so eminently readable. This is history brought home, a story that must be told, told superbly well.

A Flawless Collection of Essays

Billy Watson's Croker Sack is candid and clear and Mr. Burroughs himself is an expert in syntax. The tales are honest and human without being sentimental. This is the type of book you listen to carefully, sounding out words, hearing them together. The style is self-effacing in some ways - I reread sentences, surprised the second time by their beauty, but more surprised that I didn't notice them as much the first time, the prose is so natural. And this is, perhaps, the best quality of the collection - that it so naturally evokes eloquence. I recommend this collection to anyone fascinated by words and sentences, but more to those seeking well-told yarns about the things that make us most human.
