I think the Brad and Alta Smith did a wonderful job researching and "discovering" these wineries, most of which are extremely under-publicized. This book is a handy guide which gets you to every winery and tells you all you need to know about each one before you arrive! A MUST BUY!

The Hero Within tells a series of touching stories that will keep you turning every page - I could hardly put it down; at the same time, by the end of the book I had a new sense of what a treatment center like the Colorado Boys Ranch is and how it works to utilize a variety of treatment methods and perspectives to achieve amazing results. This combination of wonderful storytelling and factual reporting makes for an impressively compelling series of 'case studies' that should be of interest both to the average reader and to people who have a particular (academic) focus on studying psychiatric treatment models.
The Ranch's evolution from an orphanage into an accredited residential treatment facility touches on many of the issues that have been prominently debated in discussions of the philosophy of psychiatry - questions about how to treat both persons and bodies, minds and brains; it is well worth reading as a direct account of how a leading institution developed its unique treatment perspective.
It is even more worth reading as a heartwarming series of success stories that can help to remind us all that change, even if it is hard, is not impossible.

This well written book is a compilation of heart warming success stories about boys who have lived at the Colorado Boys Ranch in La Junta,Colorado. The authors have done a wonderful job of describing the way these boys' lives were changed for the better by their time spent at the ranch. Many of these boys come from dire circumstances. The ranch has used the rural setting to achieve a remarkable success rate that is setting a standard throughout the nation. The stories are fascinating and I could hardly put the book down. Buy this book and you will be helping troubled boys around the nation (as all the authors' proceeds go to the Colorado Boys Ranch). Also your heart will be uplifted and you will be thoroughly entertained.

The author moved to the Colorado frontier at the turn of the century when he was a preteen. His descriptions of the hard work for survival that his family endured, along with the peacefulness of a time that was not burdened by extra possessions, made me homesick for a different time. He reminded me that a lot of what we are missing is time to sit and look at the sky (there was no school nearby, so he didn't attend one). It was not an easy time, and illnesses before penicillan could be deadly. But courage and love went a long way, even though those words were not mentioned. I was quite moved by this family's determination to succeed.

Hal Borland grew up on the Colorado frontier early in the 20th century, his family being among the last to take advantage of the Homestead Act. Although the story is set from 1910-1913, within the lifetime of a few old people I know, it's so far away from the world of the internet that it's staggering. In some ways like the Little House on the Prairie books, but somewhat more sophisticated, this is a completely true account of Mr. Borland's childhood, and it relates the events of his difficult life, and also explores deeper subjects such as the nature of time. A difficult book to find, but a very worthwhile read.

Dan Flores has lived most of his life in the Horizontal Yellow. Another, more historical term for this land would be the Spanish-Mexican Frontier. Florida was not settled from Mexico, of course, and the settlement of California was decades to more than a century later.
Flores explores this land from both the history and natural history points of view, with the historical part generally beginning with the first Spanish-U.S. contact as part of post-Louisiana Treaty boundary negotiations.
Not all Texas is the Southern spillover of Dallas and Houston; get acquainted with the rest of it, and adjacent areas, in this book.

This book, although fiction, is true history. It was written by Henty in 1894. It's a classic adventure novel right up there in the ranks of Swiss Family Robinson. Henty was an outstanding writer of his time. It's very easy to get lost in this book, I'd be suprised if anyone could read it without putting it down. It's full of references and dialect of days long gone by. I want to jump into a time machine and go live with Tom for a while and quit worrying about traffic and work. I am fortune enough to own an original 1894 hard copy of this book that was given to me by a family friend and will cherrish it for ever.
This book is really exciting and informative.

This book presents a factual side of western history in an exciting way! That is very rare these days. From the first few pages, you are drawn in by young Tom's determination to join his uncle in Colorado and the dangers, joys, and sorrows he encounters along the way. I read this book in five days; it is an impossible put-down! All those who love history or just great stories will love this book.

Muriel Marshall, long time Colorado Western Slope resident and authoritative author, has done it again. In her incomparable, easy-to-read style, she has written the definitive book about a famous landmark on the Western Slope that the Ute Indians, wise in such matters, called Heaven. Most present day visitors know it a Grand Mesa, reputed to be the world's largest flattop mountain. The book is a well-researched, in-depth look at this 2,000 square mile geological phenomenon. It's all here, the history, the people, the place and events that have made Grand Mesa such a unique place. You will learn there are more than a thousand named places on some 50 U.S. Geological Survey quad maps required to cover its surface. Names such as Condemn It Park, Hell's Kitchen, Dead Man's Gulch and Holy Terror Creek are vividly described and framed in historical perspective. The story of Enos Hotchkiss and his entry into the Uncompahgre Valley is both interesting and factually accurate. The hardships endured by the Utes and early settlers are a reminder of the sometimes unforgiving climate and terrain on this one-of-a-kind treasure. You will visit 300 lakes, walk among the springtime flowers, enjoy summer hiking and fishing, revel in its myriad winter activities, and marvel at its incomparable, colorful autumn. Its all here, the history that is truly sometimes stranger than fiction; the people who struggled to settle, but never really tamed, this formidable obstacle; the vast array of flora and fauna found within its boundaries; and the events that have made Grand Mesa a "heaven" to those fortunate enough to have traversed its terrain. This is destined to be the definitive history of Grand Mesa. It is a comprehensive, well written book that is the hallmark of Marshall. For you readers who have read her earlier works, you know what I mean. For you that have not, well...you are in for a treat. Marshall is as great an asset on the Western Slope as the people and places she writes about. You will never truly know Grand Mesa until you read this book.

This classic new book was truly a pleasure to read. A book of historical substance, I commend Nicholas on his labor of love in this valued analysis of Jim Crow and the Woodrow Wilson Administration. A must read for all who have a genuine interest in a protest movement that challenged federal racial segregation and discrimination as it related to the forthcoming "Prophet of Peace." A great contribution to the Political Science Dept. Mr. Patler!
NB I'm looking forward to the movie!

THIS BOOK SHOULD BE A REQUIRED TEXT IN AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY CLASSES ALONG WITH ALDON MORRIS'S THE ORIGINS OF THE MODERN CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. Nicholas Patler's well written and fascinating book truly makes a unique contribution and challenges historical opinion in so many ways--some strikingly and others so subtley that one may miss the significance if they're not careful. I was unaware that such a massive protest movement, which included thousands of African Americans and white sympathizers, had occurred forty years BEFORE THE MODERN CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT! 1913 and 1914!
Mr. Patler shows that African Americans, far from being hopelessly divided or apathetic (as some have charged) to challenge Jim Crow at what was perhaps the worst period of racism in this country, instead rose up and passionately and strategically challenged the actions of the Wilson government to segregate, downgrade, terminate, and just plain humiliate African Americans working in the federal departments. The author gives gripping accounts of the electrifying mass meetings--some as large as the ones in the modern civil rights movement, and excellent descriptions of the protest tactics. His analysis of the growth of protest orginzations in the Progressive Era, including his revision of the NAACP, challenges the view again that protest activism was weak during this period. Mr. Patler also paints wonderful portraits of the colorful protest leaders, especially the fascinating and sorely neglected William Monroe Trotter. Wake up Black History Month! Trotter is the MLK of the Progressive Era and he's rarely mentioned and never given his dues in our history. I can still picture him confronting Wilson at the White House. He, along with the other protestors and activist organizations, set the tone and groundwork for the modern civil rights movement.
Jim Crow and the Wilson Administration is by far the most thorough and detailed account of Wilsonian federal Jim Crow and the only analysis of the protest that followed. The only thing I wish Mr. Patler would have given more attention to is the racist leaders who gave federal Jim Crow its thrust. He gives excellent descriptions of a few of them, most notably Wilson, James Vardaman, and Thomas Dixon, but I would like to know more about some of the others.
