This guidebook introduces the potential tourist to various utopian communities throughout the United States. Each community is given a chapter, which has an introduction that includes the community's general location, address, telephone number, hours when open, admission, restaurants, shops and facilities. (Everything a tourist could need!) Next follows an overview of the community, its history, and finally a written tour explaining what a visitor will see.

The communities included are: Ephrata Cloister (Ephrata, Pennsylvania), Old Salem (Winston-Salem, North Carolina), Mount Lebanon Shaker Village (New Lebanon, New York), Hancock Shaker Village (Pittsfield, Massachusetts), Canterbury Shaker Village (Canterbury, New Hampshire), The Shaker Museum (Poland Spring, Maine), Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill (Harrodsburg, Kentucky), Shakertown at South Union (South Union, Kentucky), Shaker Museum and Library (Old Chatham, New York), Old Economy Village (Ambridge, Pennsylvania), Zoar Village State Memorial (Zoar, Ohio), Historic New Harmony (New Harmony, Indiana), Oneida Community (Oneida, New York), Fruitlands (Harvard, Massachusetts), Historic Bethel German Colony (Aurora, Oregon), Bishop Hill (Bishop Hill, Illinois), Amana Colonies (Amana, Iowa), Historic Rugby (Rugby, Tennessee), and Koreshan State Historic Site (Estero, Florida).

This book is a wonderful resource! Not only does this book tell you how you can visit various historic utopian communities, but it also gives you the information you need to understand what the community was about. Complete with pictures, I highly recommend this book.

A "Trip" to Ancient Egypt
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 7 total.

What a fun way to learn more about Ancient Egypt! This book is written as if you were living in Ancient times and planning a trip to Egypt during the reign of Ramesses II, around 1250 BC.It is written in the style of a travel guide, with information on practicalities, getting around, where to stay, food and drink, and what to do if you get sick.Like all good guidebooks, there is information on the best souvenirs to get(papyrus sandals, amulets, and scarabs)and where to find the best entertainment. And of course there is lots of information on the top sights: the Great Pyramids, the Step Pyramids, the sights of Memphis, the Valley of Kings and Tomb Art at Thebes, and the sights of Nubia. At the front is a fold-out map of the entire region so you won't get lost. "Tourists tips" are scattered throughout the book. A very entertaining way to learn history!

Written, illustrated, and designed as a kind of travel guide for young readers ages 12 and older, Lesley Sims' A Visitor's Guide To Ancient Rome portrays a time when ancient Rome was at its height of power, influence, and culture. This lively, exciting, accurate, and highly recommended "Usborne Timetour" offers a wealth of information on everyday Roman life ranging from religion and fashion to schools and the army. Included are suggestions for where to stay and what to see on a virtual tour, even advice on how to behave at a banquet! A Visitor's Guide To Ancient Rome is enhanced with a detailed map of Rome for finding one's way around the queen city of the empire.

An excellent account of the Egypt in the 1840's

Review Date: 1999-04-16
This is one of the most interesting books I have read for some while - I first discovered it in the bibliography of Layard's "Travels in Persia, Susiana and Babylonia" - a scarce book now but well worth getting from a library.

Curzon is the archetypical English Antiquarian - willing to brave the dangers and discomforts in the pursuit of an intangable knowledge.

This book is full of anecdotes and observations of life before the western influence destroyed much of it's colour and variety. I found some of the narrations of life in Cairo and Alexandria especially interesting - like the flooding of the Nile and the ritual of draining the river into a canal in Cairo - not done anymore since the construction of the Aswan dam.

The narratives on the monasteries visited, some of which were in strange places, were colourful and I wonder what remains of some of these places now.

This is a great book for anyone interested in travel or history and will survive many readings I am sure.

Human beings who created the Voyager Spacecraft

Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1998-01-12
The best and most interesting book on one of the greatest scientific accomplishments of our century written in the words of the individuals involved.
These are real people including secretaries, guards, Telephone operators, and others as well as Engineers, Scientists, Project managers, and key individuals who participated in this remarkable extension of our knowledge of the Solar system.

Of particular delight to the reviewer was the reoccuring theme of pride of accomplishment by those associated with the Voyager project as well as the problems that were overcome, both technical and financial.
I found this an inspiring work and reccomend it to those who believe in humanity and scientific accomplishment.

This is a very informative book, I've been on the Yard many, many times and never knew things like who has visited the Supe's house or what ALL the statues on the grounds represented. Very, very interesting book! Well worth the money!

The arrival to the USA seems to introduce Europeans into a new dimension. You can't do anything without a car! Distances are enormous and walks aren't pleasant because of the empty sidewalks and high traffic streets. At my arrival at the airport after many years of absence I spotted this pocket guide and bought it right away. What a revelation! It is possible and enjoyable to take a walk in Boston outside the downtown area and actually see many hidden aspects of this beautiful even if sprawled out city. The book is written by a humoristic person that has a first hand experience of what he is talking about and is culturally prepared on history and culture of this town.
I enjoyed using this booklet and strongly reccomend it to tourists use to "walking down cities" in their desire to know them better.

I bought this book as a gift for my dad to encourage him to go for walks around the Bucks County area. The maps and content of the book are really nice and detailed. The only thing I don't like about the book is the cover. I think the cover makes the book look dated.

My wife and I enjoyed this book, which provided a number of interesting walks around Manhattan. With plentiful easy-to-understand maps, and interesting explanations of New York history, it really enhanced our vacation. If you are the type of person who likes to walk around a city on vacation, or are interested in walking around New York due to the sheer density of things to see, this is well worth taking with you.
