Tours and Travel Books

Barefoot's book contains valuable and interesting tidbits of many important events and battles that took place in South Carolina. Since the state supposedly experienced more Revolutionary battles than any other state, it is fitting that such a book was published.

I really enjoyed Barefoot's descriptions of the many battles and skirmishes fought in the state and he does a good job of giving the reader clear directions on how to reach the sites. Whether you want to visit the major battles such as: Kings Mountain, Cowpens, Ninety-Six or visit the homes of patriots, Barefoot's book contains easy-to-follow directions and interesting anecdotes of the event or place.

Since I live in Charlotte NC and am close to many of the sites, the book has several times served as a valuable guide for Revolutionary War tours.

This book inspired me to plan a series of long weekend trips to the lower NC coast, and revisit some of the places I vacationed at as a child/teenager. There are many historic and curious areas and sites pointed out in every chapter, places that we drove by years ago, but never really took notice of. For instance, a civil war ship wrecked close to the beach and now located under a fishing pier is only one of the many curousities Barefoot discusses. I was also inspired to visit places I had never been, such as the town of Southport, at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, and Bald Head Island, just a 20 minute ferry ride away. The descriptions of even the smallest details given by Barefoot lured me to find these wonderful places.I can now appreciate the lower NC coast both from the historical perspective, and from the aspect of its unspoiled, natural beauty.

This is a great book to save some cash if you are in Colorado or going to vacation here. I really liked it and found out stuff I never knew about the state. I highly suggest it if you want to enjoy Colorado in cheap way!

What a wonderful idea! The tours in this book are really entertaining and even better, they are free. This is the kind of book that gets you off the couch. My kids might not have been too excited when they saw the plain black and white pages, but we went on some tours, and now they love looking through it and picking the next weekend trip. I appreciate how well Jodi describes the tours, so I know exactly what to expect. I'm definately looking forward to taking free tours in other states when I've finished with Colorado.

This book is the most comprehensive guide to exhibitions and is, therefore, a must have for the traveler. The most important aspect of the book is its listings of the various touring exhibitions, both by state and by country. The book contains useful information including: addresses (both street and web site), telephone numbers, hours of operation, and cost of admissions. I buy a copy for myself every year, as well as, give a few as Christmas presents to my art-loving friends. What other travel book can you buy and be able to use it EVERYWHERE? Just this one!

"A Traveler's Guide To Caribbean History" should accompany every visitor to the islands and waters of the West Indies. Don and Dene Dachner have produced an essential guide for all who are interested in understanding the history of their Caribbean destinations. Following an overview of the history of the entire region, the Dachners provide informative capsule reviews of the history of each Caribbean destination from Amerindian times through the colonial period - be it Spanish, British, French, Dutch or American - to the present day. The book includes maps, photographs and such useful information as local tourist contacts. The Dachners' "A Traveler's Guide To Caribbean History" should be in every Caribbean traveler's bag and every Caribbean cruise ship's library and gift shop.

Bensen offers a wonderful guide to the Pony Express enthusiast. Paralleling the original trail and stations, the Guide gives an east-to-west account for finding the (Pony and non-Pony) sites, museums, and curiosities along the historical trail. Bensen has been particularly thorough in reporting where sites of interest are on private property. I found this book to have many helpful features including an accurate assessment of whether or not an obscure site was worth getting to, what types of vehicles--from all-terrain to RV's--are appropriate for particular stretches of the route, alternate routes for those pressed for time, and great Pony By-ways. This guide also includes interesting historical anecdotes inserted at appropriate intervals to the surrounding text. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to follow the trail of the Pony Express.

This book, along with the other traveler's guides, give a good description of the lighthouses, plus accurate driving directions, including turn-by-turn directions and a map. This book is a must for anyone going on a lighthouse vacation.

Well written, thought provoking book aimed at women of all ages. If you're female and have the itch to travel but were afraid to go alone, this book shows that you have nothing to fear. Many insights, ideas and great links to assist women in their quest to see the world, be it alone or with friends. A must have planning guide.

This is a "must" companion piece for anyone who drives the Natchez Trace, whether for 4 miles or 400. Without the book's detailed information about the Trace's history, the towns it runs through, and the many recreational opportunities along the way, the Trace would be just another road. The Summerlin's book and their subject remind us that life is indeed a journey, not a destination
