Museum Planet's incomparable "talking book" guides to Venice are the next best thing to being there, offering a beautiful visual tour through hundreds of color photos, a knowledgable guide, in depth histories of the monuments. The best possible preparation for a trip to Venice, and a welcome review later, when the magnificent sites of Venice can be brought to life again.

I live in SF and find this book very handy. There are many SF museums I've heard of but didn't know much about. This book provides a great overview of all the museums (even the really small ones) and gives the relevant info i.e. hours, websites, phone numbers, etc. I think both tourists and locals will get a lot out of it.

It's so fascinating to read the journal of a little boy who became President. This is a captivating and well-written book that gives kids a ton of ideas for keeping a journal for themselves. And if you go to the author's website, she even has excerpts from her own childhood diary to share! A wonderful choice.

Excellent Book on Middle Eastern Culture
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-21
This book, written by Paul J. Nance, is one of the best reference books I have ever seen. I recently purchased the book and I find its contents and full color pictures very exciting. Whether you plan on traveling to the Middle East, or if you just want to learn about the culture, this is the book to read.

This book has several first rate accounts of Paul J. Nance's thirty two years in the Middle East. He worked for Aramco Oil Company in Saudi Arabia during this time and he acquired quite a bit of knowledge. Since his return to America he has started a collection of Middle Eastern artifacts and art. The book details many of the artifacts in his Museum, and is extremely helpful in learning about Middle Eastern culture.

This book can change the way you look at the Islamic religion. Before I looked at the book and visited the Museum of Mr. Nance I knew very little about the Arabian Penninsula.

Truly Useful

Following a series of recommended drives throughout the Middle South from west to east, this compact little book provides an excellent listing of sights (including brief descriptions) that a reasonably intelligent reader might enjoy. I read it with highlighter in hand, marking the sights that appealed to me, an approach I recommend to others.

Mr. White appears to be an active bird-watcher (he apparently has written other books on that subject). Readers who share that interest will find this book particularly interesting, since he highlights the best bird-watching spots along the Gulf Coast.

Here's a great book about some not well known great places.

Although you could probably find books on the Four corners, the Gulf Coast, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Chesapeake Bay, the Great Basin, the Ozarks, and the badlands/prairies of the Upper Midwest, it would take you a very long time, and a lot of money to find books covering these regions as well as they are covered in this single book.

As usual, the National Geographic photographers have done an excellent job, particularly with the Upper Peninsula and the Four Corners.

The text is simply excellent. The writers rhapsodically catch the essence of these lesser appreciated pieces of the American fabric, and of the lives of their inhabitants. I enjoyed this book for weeks after it came in the mail. I still do. This is truly an unqualified five-star book. Get one ASAP.
