This is the "ultimate" tour guide to beautiful Monterey County, CA (referred to by the locals as Paradise). It truly is invaluable as a resource for locals and tourists alike. I've lived here for 15 years and can't believe there are so many wonderful things to do and see...for FREE! Unlike any other tour guide.

Essential reading for visitors to Monterey County, CA.

The Ultimate Field Guide to Monterey County this beautifully organized book is a must for visitors and residents of central California's most acclaimed region. From the famous shoreline of the Monterey Peninsula to Steinbeck's Pastures of Heaven and the nation's great salad bowl in the Salinas Valley this edition covers it all. Easy to read, clearly indexed and well designed this book defines the phrase "essential reference" and I especially recommend it for families.

I just received a copy of this book a few days ago and I've really enjoyed looking at all of the colorful pictures and reading the interesting and sometimes funny essays. Some of the sites I'll visit (like the Field of Dreams Movie Site), others I think I'll skip (like the courthouse where Joe Jackson couldn't say it wasn't so) but it's fun learning about them all. Good book for a snowy day.

Every time my husband and I plan a trip we check this little jewel and discover what exhibits are in vicinities we will be in. In fact, we have planned trips to go to particular exhibitions. Not only are exhibitions listed and clearly described but also accurate museum hours and telephone numbers are given. It is a must-have for us and a great gift for travelers.

Excellent guide for including museum visits to your trips.

I have cycled only a few of the book's listed road rides in the Hill Country but I am familiar with portions of several other roads in the Hill Country and West Texas via automobile. These are truly great rides with well-thought directions and information. It's so good that when Mr. Ford says you will have to "shoo" sheep and livestock from the road, it really must be done! I eagerly await even more rides with the next edition of the book.

Beautiful Country, Great Book

Our Texas Hill Country is indeed a little-known source of beauty to outsiders. Because of its depressed condition for decades in the past it was overlook even by Texans. Today, however, we are able to see this area for what it is: rolling hills, tumbling streams and rivers, and a great view around so many curves in its small secondary roads. Though West Texas is well-known for Big Bend, the sheer area of this part of our State, combined with sparse population, means all of us can enjoy peace and solitude--this is where the South turns into the Southwest.

Mr. Ford's book reflects a love of the area, combined with excellent directions and documentation of sights. The book is divided into geographic areas, and within those areas, into tours of a day or longer. He has also done an excellent job of rating the difficulty of the tours, and why he has come to those conclusions.

Though I have only cycled a small amount of this area, I would also recommend this book for those who would like to tour by car. I've traveled almost this entire area by car and wish I'd had this guide then. Additionally, I found the photography very well-done--particularly in view of the price of the book.

This book is a valuable resource, and a terrific buy for the price!

The AAA Spiral Guides are the best small guidebooks for seeing the major sights of a city. Recently I visited Rome for two days and wanted something small that I could carry around. With easy-to-use maps, good walking tours, and excellent descriptions of where to go and eat, the AAA Spiral Guide for Rome was extremely useful. In other cities I also got a Virgin Guide but the AAA guide was much more useful. I only wish they were available for more cities!

Just the Right Amount of Information - A Great Guide.

I spent hours looking for a good travel guide to Rome. Many of the guides provided too much detailed information, including the floor plans of museums and photographs of every major piece of art (the whole point of the trip is to see the art in person). The Spiral Guide provided the perfect amount of information - how to get around the city, detailed maps, places to eat and shop and stay, and all of the major and minor sites with historical information, hours, prices, etc. I highly recommend this guide for anyone planning a trip to Rome.

Having read lots of "guidebooks" about cities both in the states and in other countries, I can confidently recommend this book as one of the most comprehensive and usable! As residents of the Twin Cities, our household brings out this book everytime we want to know more about a building we've seen, when we want to know how late the zoo is open, or when we can't decide where to have a great dinner out. It is fun to read, very well organized by areas of the cities, and includes great information, such as history of neighborhoods and buildings, menu recommendations for restaurants, and where to find "hidden" locales. Excellent!

Unlike all the other Minneapolis guide books i saw. this one has an entire chapter about the mall of america (which is the whole reason for our trip to minneapolis), but it lists and describes many of the stores (especially the unusual and unique ones), and it has interesting facts about the mall. The book also has great maps. And the best part is, it color codes it's entries. Parks and outdoor activities are printed in green, hotels are in blue, resturaunts in red, etc. This book was a huge help in planning what to do and how long to stay.

I really liked how well Seattle was described, though in a very general manner. Small glimpses of the city were given and well critiqued. Very helpful, even for relocation.

As good as guidebooks get

This is as good as a guidebook can get.

It is concise- it is not a encylopedia volume to lug around town; It is informative- with history of the city and its surroundings, the book is very thorough and written very very well; It is well illustrated- restaurants, hotels, attractions are color-coded differently and there are a ton of great illustrations that really do justice to the charm of the city.

Despite having grown up in Seattle, this book opened my eyes to a whole new world of places to go and restaurants to check out that I previously didn't see.

I would like to shake the hand of the man who put together such a fine guidebook- I have one for the Washington DC area as well!

This $5 Info-Packed Book Is A Natural Wonder in Itself!
Helpful Votes: 41 out of 41 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-12
Get this book before you go to the Grand Canyon and you'll make the most of your visit--whether you stay for a few hours, or over a week. With over 44 full color photographs (2 of them panoramic canyon views measuring 17" x 7"), four easy-to-read maps, accompanied by concisely well-written text (just over 50 pages), this beautiful book gives you a scenic viewpoint-to-viewpoint guided tour of the best sights, rim trails, and hikes the Grand Canyon has to offer--plus as a bonus, its soft cover and unique shape (9-1/4" x 7-3/4") make it perfect for rolling up and sticking in a fanny pack. And at just under $5.00, it's the best bargain you'll find in Grand Canyon Village (but don't wait until you get there to buy it--there are very few copies remaining on the shelves!)

What I especially appreciated about the book was the logical arrangement of the Table of Contents by viewpoint, beginning from the south as you drive into the main entrance (Grand Canyon Village) and then west to east. Even more valuable is the information preceding each viewpoint description telling the distance to the next viewpoint (in miles and kilometers)--handy statistics that help you decide whether to hoof it to the next viewpoint or wait for the next shuttle bus, as much of the South Rim is closed to passenger car traffic.

In addition to the accurate information and beautiful presentation, this book also includes interesting history of the Grand Canyon with colorful descriptions of the pioneers who first explored, mapped, and took political action to preserve this natural wonder. Told with quotes, anecdotal stories, journal entries and black and white photos (from the late 1800's and early 1900's), the author weaves a tale as deep as the Colorado River itself winding through the Grand Canyon walls far below. Here you'll learn the history behind the buildings still standing on the edge of the rim, and the train that still visits daily, as well as be introduced to the geological history and modern day plant life and animal life that call the Grand Canyon their home.

Must-Have Guide to the South Rim!

This is must-have when visiting the South Rim of the Grand Canyon as it gives you all the background you need to enjoy the rim from Desert View to Hermits Rest.

Often, when people visit a place like the Grand Canyon, the very size and awe-inspiring views can be very overwhelming at first. To help find your way to the small wonders as well as the big, this book will give you the lowdown on all of the overlooks, roads, hotels, and historical buildings along the South Rim. It also gives you the historical background on the roads, overlooks, and trails.

When you get to the South Rim, the first thing to do is pickup this book as starting point.

I hear they are also working on a version for the North Rim.

I AM AN AVID BASEBALL FAN AND AFTER READING AMERICAS BALLPARKS I KNOW WHY. THIS BOOK IS ONE OF THE MOST INFORMATIVE AND INTERESTING SPORTS BOOKS ON THE MARKET. THE AUTHOR EXPRESSES A LOVE FOR THE GAME AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS. THE INFORMATION ACCOMPANIED BY THE SPECTACULAR PICTURES WILL MAKE YOU WANT TO VISIT EACH ONE OF THESE NATIONAL TREASURES, AND IN THE CASE OF STADIUMS PAST, BUILD A TIME MACHINE TO BE A PART OF HISTORY. AND WHAT MAKES IT EVEN BETTER IS THE AUTHORS SELFLESS DEVOTION TO THE EMERGENCY SERVICE COMMUNITY. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL.

Absolutely Top of the Line.

New York City Firefighter Ken Hogan is a hero and a fantastic author. Baseball stadiums books are my thing and I have bought many of them. This one is one of the best ever written. Hogan goes to great lengths talking about the old forgotten ballparks and there are many many never before published photos. You will be 110% satisfied if you buy this book. God Bless you FF Hogan and thank you. NEVER FORGET 9/11.
