A Brilliant insight into the man as well as the factsReview Date: 1998-11-22
An excellent biography, replete with many photosReview Date: 2000-08-21
This book does not pretend to be a detailed biography of Manfred von Richthofen, the famous "Red Baron" of the German airforce in the First World War. Nevertheless, it is very revealing, and the photography and illustration is wonderful--much of it in full color.
"Nothing happens without God's will," said von Richtofen, "This is the only consolation which we can put into our soul during this war."
In modern warfare, all pretense at chivalry and knightly honor is gone. Not even a memory of it remains. Warriors kill their "enemy," both the enemy warriors and the civilian populations with impunity, at long distance, with detachment and clinical precision. In von Richthofen's time, at least in the beginning, it was different. Their airplanes were made of sticks and fabric stuck together with animal glue. Their guns were primitive, and to fly at all, regardless of enemies trying to kill you, was a dangerous proposition. They were the pioneers of aerial warfare, still clinging to the old traditions of the cavalry, and honor, and courage, and chivalry toward a vanquished ("unhorsed") enemy.
Their commanders forbade the wearing of parachutes, thinking that it would encourage cowardice and the abandonment of the fight and their valuable aircraft. So, when the wings tore loose from the fuselage in a high-G maneuver, or when the aircraft burst into flames, the aviator's doom was sealed, and a horrible death resulted.
On June 6th, 1917, Manfred von Richthofen was shot down and received a head wound, with which he was hospitalized. He returned to duty. On April 21st, 1918, less than a year later, Rittmeister Manfred von Richthofen, intent upon shooting down Lt. May's Sopwith Camel, of the 209th Squadron of the RAF, was himself caught from behind by a burst of machine gun fire by Capt. A.R. Brown. Brown saw him stiffen as he saw the burst of tracer. He kept after his quarry, Lt. May, though, as Brown pulled up and clear. They flew behind the English lines at treetop level, May twisting and turning, and von Richthofen following each move with his red Fokker triplane. The Baron was hit by ground fire and landed his airplane, dead. He had been officially credited with 80 air-to-air kills, the largest number of any aviator on either side in the First World War.
This is an interesting book, both for the insight into the Baron von Richthofen's character, and for the information included in it about World War One aircraft and tactics.

Fascinating depth on the issues of the ReformationReview Date: 2005-02-23
The author summarizes the content of many writings against/by Luther during this period. Particularly fascinating to me was the exchange between Erasmus' "The Freedom of the Will" and Luther's "On the Bondage of the Will." Two master theologians go at it head to head, describing the heart of the Gospel teaching, and whether we can do anything to merit salvation or whether it is all by God's grace. This is truly "meat" and not "milk" for the seeking reader, with enduring relevance for modern-day Christians.

Amazingly, the impact of the freeing of the monasteries and nunneries is immense. From there the liturgical reforms and political with the Phesants War loom large as well.
All culminates at Augsburg, with the remarkable Confession, weak Confutation, and subsequent Apology to the Augustana.
Brecht certainly is meticulous and careful historian, whose documentation is precise and enormous in its breath and depth. This set will stand the test for years and be of great asset to all those seeking to follow this amazing follower of Christ to the life of the world.

Where the story goes after Max's stint in Soviet Siberia is unbelievable. You will not put this novel down during the second half of it, I promise. And it's a true story, adding to the amazement.

Interesting, fascinating, importantReview Date: 2006-05-29
Gestalt psychologists -- and by this I mean the original variety -- are among history's most fascinating and deep psychologists. This might not be evident from the few tidbits that show up in most basic psychology texts. But one hint that does get passed down frequently is that Abraham Maslow viewed Wertheimer as one of the few "self-actualized" people he had met. This book paints a portrait of the heroes of Gestalt psychology, and their profound outlooks on science, life and everything. They were creative, courageous, outrageous, profound... and human. Their long-neglected ideas were important then and they are important now.
This is Michael Wertheimer's long-awaited biography of his beloved and long-deceased father, completed with his long-time research collaborator, Brett King. I remember seeing him, and later them, work on the enormous project when I was a graduate student in the 1980s and 1990s in Boulder, Colorado. Professor Wertheimer's offices were cluttered with document after document related to his father and other Gestalt psychologists. The Gestalt/Wertheimer story was remarkably intricate, and it was clear that Professor Wertheimer wanted to do justice to the story. Well, the resulting book is remarkable, and I recommend it strongly.
Another book on Gestaltists that I recommend strongly - Ley's book on Wolfgang Kohler and the Apes of Tenerife.
Oct 16, 2006: New Book/translation of a classic and important Gestalt text:
LAWS OF SEEING
by Wolfgang Metzger (originally published 1936)
Translated by Lothar Spillmann, Steven Lehar, Mimsey
Stromeyer, and Michael Wertheimer
MIT Press.
I just ordered the Metzger/Spillmann et al. book.
I think it is great that there is so much "new" material on the great Gestalt thinkers. Taking a deeper look at Gestalt thinking has been well worth it. The school's thinking was much more deep and significant than the cartoon versions that are found in many textbooks.

This four volume set is really for the person who wants the nitty gritty about the plane. If you want an overview of the plane there are plenty of excellent books (Me262: Arrow to the future, to name one) that are out there.

I found this book fascinationg and frightening. It did give me an insight however into the mindset of the people who followed Hitler: empty, unfullfilled lives without any values, morals or goals, drifters who were looking for a "guru" to fill their empty shells.
