Amazing Story

Very few people, even WWII expert, know a lot about this woman, Magda Goebbels. I was astounded to learn about her background, her relationship with Arloseroff during her youth, her flirtation with conversion to Judaism and her relationship/admiration with Hitler. The book seems to be thouroughly researched although I guess that there are quite a few "artistic" addition to make the book more readable. It flows very smoothly and you often have the feeling that you are reading a novel. A lot about Magda's life cannot be explained rationally although the author tries to make some sense of her actions. The fact that she murdered six of her seven children because "life is not worht living without the Fuehrer" cannot be explained by any rational person.
I found this book fascinationg and frightening. It did give me an insight however into the mindset of the people who followed Hitler: empty, unfullfilled lives without any values, morals or goals, drifters who were looking for a "guru" to fill their empty shells.

Sleeping with the Devil!!!....

And producing 6 beautiful children! This is indeed one of the strangest biographies you'll ever read, not to mention fascinating thruout! Magda was educated at a Catholic school, had charm, beauty, and polish in abundance, and was the stepdaughter to a Jewish father..Friedlander was her maiden name. She fell for a leading German Zionest in early 1920's, then married a leading German industrialist, and divorced him to marry one of the three most infamous Nazis (along with Hitler and Himmler). Traveling in the highest of social circles, she became the ideal German mother, producing a child about every year with Goebbels, who was known for his incredible infidelities, not to mention anti-semitism, and general nastiness. Even so, obviously he had charm and personality. Anyway, just look at the family photo Mr. and Mrs. Goebbels, and you may agree a more beautiful set of children, including 5 girls, is a true rarity. Also, do not miss the photo of the 1943 audience of Goebbel's "Total War" speech. The entire audience, including Magda and her 2 daughters, is completely bewildered, possibly scared, during this "Total War" speech. This book is about perfect in showing how a German woman could sell her soul to the devil, her hubbie and Hitler. WE all know the horrifying ending, but this is still a truly fascinating, unique, if sometimes repellent read throughout!

If you blew off history in high school, and you now want to know what WWII was about, this is the book to read. Mainly, it describes what Hitler thought about other countries and how he played one against the other. It details how every offensive was fought by the Reich, from France, Yugoslavia, Poland, to the Desert War in Africa and the intense battles between Hitler and his generals. Very quick easy reading without the usual weary footnoting most other history books have.

A quite extensive book for its size, many pictures of whom many are very good in quality. For people who want to know more about Manfred von Richthofen, but are not interested in lengthy books, this book is a brilliant chronological summary of his life and work .

An excellent biography, replete with many photos

This book does not pretend to be a detailed biography of Manfred von Richthofen, the famous "Red Baron" of the German airforce in the First World War. Nevertheless, it is very revealing, and the photography and illustration is wonderful--much of it in full color.

"Nothing happens without God's will," said von Richtofen, "This is the only consolation which we can put into our soul during this war."

In modern warfare, all pretense at chivalry and knightly honor is gone. Not even a memory of it remains. Warriors kill their "enemy," both the enemy warriors and the civilian populations with impunity, at long distance, with detachment and clinical precision. In von Richthofen's time, at least in the beginning, it was different. Their airplanes were made of sticks and fabric stuck together with animal glue. Their guns were primitive, and to fly at all, regardless of enemies trying to kill you, was a dangerous proposition. They were the pioneers of aerial warfare, still clinging to the old traditions of the cavalry, and honor, and courage, and chivalry toward a vanquished ("unhorsed") enemy.

Their commanders forbade the wearing of parachutes, thinking that it would encourage cowardice and the abandonment of the fight and their valuable aircraft. So, when the wings tore loose from the fuselage in a high-G maneuver, or when the aircraft burst into flames, the aviator's doom was sealed, and a horrible death resulted.

On June 6th, 1917, Manfred von Richthofen was shot down and received a head wound, with which he was hospitalized. He returned to duty. On April 21st, 1918, less than a year later, Rittmeister Manfred von Richthofen, intent upon shooting down Lt. May's Sopwith Camel, of the 209th Squadron of the RAF, was himself caught from behind by a burst of machine gun fire by Capt. A.R. Brown. Brown saw him stiffen as he saw the burst of tracer. He kept after his quarry, Lt. May, though, as Brown pulled up and clear. They flew behind the English lines at treetop level, May twisting and turning, and von Richthofen following each move with his red Fokker triplane. The Baron was hit by ground fire and landed his airplane, dead. He had been officially credited with 80 air-to-air kills, the largest number of any aviator on either side in the First World War.

This is an interesting book, both for the insight into the Baron von Richthofen's character, and for the information included in it about World War One aircraft and tactics.

This book is essential for any deitrichphile or fan who wants to understand the motivations and life of the Legend. She honestly portrays herself and does her best not to over glamourize her life, but speaks nonchalantly without hesitation.

I also got this book secondhand, so I don't have the CD either. Alas. Anyhoo, the book is amazing. It actually manages to have pictures of Marlene looking glamorous, and also have Marlene in her kitchen at the stove. In the photographs, she is relaxed and comfortable (an important thing in pictures). And oh, the things she can do with a cigarette. She makes smoke paintings. I highly recommend this book!

This publication came with a Cd.But,since I bought it second-hand the Cd was gone! To the point! This photographic glory of the legendary woman Marlene by her friend photographer Alexander Liebmann is very well put together and can stand on its own without a Cd that has no purpose.WE all heard her voice! This marvelious book contains pictures and stills from her films and also pictures never before released of her at home, with her grandsons, her(oh,bother)daughter, and backstage/live photos....My first ever book to cover the Blue Angel is a treasured one! A nessecity for any Dietrich fan or an essential to start any collection! If you can find one-buy it!

It is rare to get an insiders view of an important policy decision written with this much thoroughness and clarity. The Marshall plan is one of the most important things America has ever done in world affairs, and the prototype and foundation of the transformation of international relations that America is presently leading. This is its best account. We should not confuse Allan Dulles with his brother.

Fascinating depth on the issues of the Reformation
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2005-02-23
This is the second of a trilogy covering Luther's life. (The other volumes are: "Martin Luther: His Road to Reformation," and "Martin Luther: The Preservation of the Church.") This edition takes us from the posting of the 95 Theses, the debate with Eck, the Diet of Worms and the major events of Luther's reformation. One gains great respect for the depth of Luther's insights and his courage in standing up for his understanding of the Gospel.

The author summarizes the content of many writings against/by Luther during this period. Particularly fascinating to me was the exchange between Erasmus' "The Freedom of the Will" and Luther's "On the Bondage of the Will." Two master theologians go at it head to head, describing the heart of the Gospel teaching, and whether we can do anything to merit salvation or whether it is all by God's grace. This is truly "meat" and not "milk" for the seeking reader, with enduring relevance for modern-day Christians.

Thorough, Accurate and Interesting Reading

This definitive bio of Luther in three volumes, is here in the second volume capturing the middles period, 1521-1532. Here the implications of the theological reform were being carried out.

Amazingly, the impact of the freeing of the monasteries and nunneries is immense. From there the liturgical reforms and political with the Phesants War loom large as well.

All culminates at Augsburg, with the remarkable Confession, weak Confutation, and subsequent Apology to the Augustana.

Brecht certainly is meticulous and careful historian, whose documentation is precise and enormous in its breath and depth. This set will stand the test for years and be of great asset to all those seeking to follow this amazing follower of Christ to the life of the world.

This novel is the story of an Eastern European Jewish man (Max), who is imprisoned by the Nazis during WW2 and by the Soviets immediately after. His story is amazing and is being told to famed Nazi hunter and the author of this book, Simon Wiesenthal, in the 1960's. Wiesenthal's involvement surrounds the Nazi camp commander who persecuted Max and his fiancée. The Nazi, Werner Schulze, resurfaces as a German plant manager twenty years after the war and Wiesenthal must decide whether or not he has sufficient evidence to prosecute him.

Where the story goes after Max's stint in Soviet Siberia is unbelievable. You will not put this novel down during the second half of it, I promise. And it's a true story, adding to the amazement.

A Love Story born out of the Holocaust

Review Date: 2000-04-29
I read this book many years ago and even now I consider it a much ignored love story with a difference. Max and Helen are survivors of the Holocaust who are separated during the war and both end up in Concentration Camps. Max believes Helen to be dead but many years later finds out that she is still alive and goes looking for her. What starts off as a journey into both their pasts becomes a struggle for them to forget what the war and the atrocities committed have done to them both as individuals; especially as Helen's son is also the son of her Nazi rapist, something that Max finds hard to accept. This is poignant love story with a bitter-sweet twist, and you are left wondering if Max and Helen will ever get back together? The ending is left open, and this to me is the saddest ending of all. Simon Wiesenthal proves himself to be a damn good writer of fiction as well as fact about the Holocaust and its tragic consequences.

I hope to write a longer review when I have time, but here goes. I ordered this book a couple months ago and have been referring to it constantly.

Gestalt psychologists -- and by this I mean the original variety -- are among history's most fascinating and deep psychologists. This might not be evident from the few tidbits that show up in most basic psychology texts. But one hint that does get passed down frequently is that Abraham Maslow viewed Wertheimer as one of the few "self-actualized" people he had met. This book paints a portrait of the heroes of Gestalt psychology, and their profound outlooks on science, life and everything. They were creative, courageous, outrageous, profound... and human. Their long-neglected ideas were important then and they are important now.

This is Michael Wertheimer's long-awaited biography of his beloved and long-deceased father, completed with his long-time research collaborator, Brett King. I remember seeing him, and later them, work on the enormous project when I was a graduate student in the 1980s and 1990s in Boulder, Colorado. Professor Wertheimer's offices were cluttered with document after document related to his father and other Gestalt psychologists. The Gestalt/Wertheimer story was remarkably intricate, and it was clear that Professor Wertheimer wanted to do justice to the story. Well, the resulting book is remarkable, and I recommend it strongly.

Another book on Gestaltists that I recommend strongly - Ley's book on Wolfgang Kohler and the Apes of Tenerife.

Oct 16, 2006: New Book/translation of a classic and important Gestalt text:

LAWS OF SEEING
by Wolfgang Metzger (originally published 1936)
Translated by Lothar Spillmann, Steven Lehar, Mimsey
Stromeyer, and Michael Wertheimer
MIT Press.

I just ordered the Metzger/Spillmann et al. book.

I think it is great that there is so much "new" material on the great Gestalt thinkers. Taking a deeper look at Gestalt thinking has been well worth it. The school's thinking was much more deep and significant than the cartoon versions that are found in many textbooks.

This is the second volume of a four volume set. All four volumes will set you back over $150.00. If you are a fan of this plane as I am, It is worth every penny. The first volume covers the genesis of the plane. The second volume examines armament and it's entry into the German war effort. Filled with excellent photos, color plates, and technical drawings, this book is a delight to read. But If you are not a nut on the subject, you may find it is too much information.
This four volume set is really for the person who wants the nitty gritty about the plane. If you want an overview of the plane there are plenty of excellent books (Me262: Arrow to the future, to name one) that are out there.
