An amazing story of the author's life and experiences throughout WWII. The hardships, the tragedies and the new start in America.

The fact that the information in the book is an account of true events makes it a fascinating read. I could not put it down.

If you have any interest in world history or simply want to be captivated by this interesting and amazing woman's life story, do yourself a favor and pick up this book.

I was given this book, and at first, did not think much of it. But once I started reading it, wow. Everyone should read the first 75 pages to see what it was like under the Red Army. Great book; hard to put down.

This Big Lie Has Been Used Before
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-04
I guess they would call it "Chutzpah", to publicly use the same big lie twice within the span of twenty or so years.

This book documents quite well how the magic number of "six million" was used in the period right after World War One in order to raise millions to help European Jews allegedly "on the brink of annihilation".

But just like today, instead of helping people who were having a rough time of it, (as many of every ethnic group were in post-war Europe), the big Jewish organizations funneled the money into their own pet projects and bank accounts to only help themselves.

Thus, we begin to see the story of the "six million", (and it is nothing more than a story!), as just another business opportunity to get money from the gullible.

As for the so-called "holocaust" of World War Two, that is the "new and improved" version of the old product, packaged for everyones tastes, with the ultimate prize being the eternal flow of money from the "Goyum", and the dispossession of the Palestinians.

Great book!

A revisionist classic that questions the Holocaust facts in a scholarly and academic and non-hateful and very loving way. Yet the publisher, Germar Rudolf, is in jail in Germany for THOUGHT CRIMES for writing "Lectures on the Holocaust."

One Piece of a Total War Puzzle Confirmed
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-31
Many of us are aware that prior to America's entry into the war against the Axis powers, Germany had declared "Total War" on the seas. This book provides documentation of how that total war of destruction was launched and managed. In that respect, it belongs on any bookshelf for those interested in the prosecution of this war from the German side. Photographs are carefully selected, showing the Kriegsmarine cadre at the height of its morale. Additionally, from the "Tagebuch" or day-book of the "First U-Boat Flotilla" we see the important day to day operations, and the transition from wolfpacks who dominated the Atlantik from Brest, to the tattered remains compromised by superior counter-intelligence and tactical response.

It is no surprise that this work is one in the line published by the distintuished Naval Institute Press. This book shows the drama of the U-Boat war in reality, just as the film "Das Boot" did on screen. Rich in detail, this work provides a great technical treatise that complements that cinematic high drama, also drawn from actual experience of U-96.

Highly recommended--a part of history frequently neglected in the high drama of the Holocaust...the acts and near total destruction OF Hitler's "Christian Navy" is also an important piece of a puzzling and dark 12 years of human history.

Excellent addition to U-boat writing

Fascinating History of Late War Division
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-06
This division was formed in late 1944 from ethnic Germans who were mostly Hungarian citizens. Poorly trained and equipped, it was thrust into combat on the Danube front and nearly destroyed by superior Red Army forces. Reformed in Silesia, the division acquitted itself well in the final days of the Third Reich. Following the surrender, about 1/3 of the soldiers were disarmed and murdered by Czechs. Strangely, most of the survivors found refuge in Soviet PWs camps, which were brutal and claimed their share of lives, but beat being murdered by the Czechs. The division was "horse drawn," meaning it relied on horses for most of its transportation and supply needs, and this alone makes refreshing reading, because so much of what is known about the Waffen-SS tends to focus on the armored and motorized formations and not on the majority of the straight-leg infantry divisions that formed much of the SS order of battle in the last two years of WWII.

Amazing information on an overlooked SS Division

This Division is frequently glossed over or barely mentioned when W-SS Divisions are discussed. However, the author has done a great job tracking down unpublished material and interviewing former members to create a well-written and detailed history. Recommended!

Very good although some times the text strays away from the subject
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-03
This is a fine book about the German infantry until the end of the 1941 Moscow campaign and contains a lot of information about the doctrine, the organisation and the personalities involved. Among the strong points of the book is the great clarity in explaining the organisation charts of the German General Staff and the OKH, the numerous short biographical notes regarding top German generals and fieldmarshals and the absence of verbalism and long drawn analysis. On the other hand the author seems to be taken away some times from his theme and spends many pages to discuss operational and strategic matters that have no direct connection with his subject, although they are extremely interesting. The chapters are: "Something New and Something Old", "From the Ashes: Lessons from the Great War", "Expansion", "Clausewitz and Carburetors: German Army Doctrine in a Period of Transition", "The German Infantry of 1939", "The Lessons of the Polish Campaign", "The Fickle Chances of War: France 1940", "Riches Have Wings: The German Strategic Dilemma, June 1940 - June 1941", "The Long Way Down, Russia 1941", "The End of the Road, Moscow 1941", "Parteitag". There are also a few maps of medium quality and 12 black and white photos.

Forgotten Legions - one of the best studies on German Infantry Development
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-07-27
Dr. Sam Lewis' book, Forgotten Legions, has itself almost been forgotten in the rush of the last decade to hash and re-hash collections of previously published works that purport to contain something newly discovered about the Wehrmacht in WW2 but upon further examination offer nothing new at all. Dr. Lewis' book should be read by all students of the topic, because he delves into original German source material to state his thesis - that the German Infantry divisions of that war became less modern and less mechanized as the war progressed due to the interference of Hitler and the Nazis into nearly every aspect of infantry policy, doctrine, organization and training. Noteworthy is his description of how Hitler emasculated the great German General Staff, leaving it powerless. This had disastrous results, as the author brilliantly relates. Though published in small quantities twenty years ago, it has been recently re-released by the publisher for the serious student of German military history. Highly recommended and a must-read for anyone thinking about buying the entire series of Tessin's order of battle on the German Armed Forces. Before you can delve into the tables of organization and equipment and order of battle details, one must first have an understanding of what they came to be the way they were. Highly recommended!

Review Date: 2006-07-19
Shame on the Germans, shame on the American government.
This sad tale recounts in vivid terms the horrors of Germany.
Bard relates the horrors of the holocaust with the convincing detail and exhaustive research that ranks with the best of any account of that. The fact that the victims in this case were all Americans trapped in German territory makes the account somehow more personal.

The sadness of American government callousness about these victims is enormous. The fact that greater effort was not made to rescue citizens in the early days is a result of the anti immigration atmosphere of the country. The fact that adequate acknowledgement and compensations was not made to Americans who spent time in concentration and slave camps is tragic and an injustice that Mr. Bard should be commended for exposing.

Mr Bard writes in clear and interesting style, carefully researches his material, and effectively martials his arguments, highly recomended

Shocking the way our father's were treated as POW's!

Review Date: 1999-01-08
This book tells the actual way that our soldiers were treated by the German army. My father was held at Berga as a POW. I never thought that the way he behaved towards me and our family was due to the war but now I haave changed my mind. Since his death I have found out through this wonderful book the reasons he hated Rooservelt, Red Cross and why he had a distrust of the dept of vetrans, and the vetrans hospital. I wish that I could get a copy of this book so that my children and grandchildren could know what a high cost their Grandfather paid for thier freedom. The book's only prombem was that it foused only on the Jewish point of view. My Father like many others was non-Jewish and held there too. The rest of the citizens need to know about teir treatment too.

First, I must warn everyone that I have not read the entire book, but was extremely impressed with it after only reading one chapter! I had the pleasure of taking Prof. Neuhouser's class on social and political philosophy; Chapter 2 was cited as secondary reading as a supplement to Rousseau's Second Discourse and Social Contract. Prof. Neuhouser has an uncommon ability in both lecture and print to elucidate the material in such a way as to make it accessible without dumbing it down -- very helpful for someone who has no phil. background (like me!). I couldn't afford to buy a copy of this book right now, but I would if for just the deeper understanding of Rousseau it affords me. I'm sure anyone who has some familiarity with Hegel would be able to appreciate this book all the more!

Bold Insights Into Social Theory

Frederick Neuhouser has a great talent for bringing out Hegel's meaning. Although he claims only to elucidate Hegel, this work is tantamount to an original contribution to social theory. Specifically, he contributes strongly to understanding the way that state and society can serve as positive conditions for freedom or as parts of freedom itself. Neuhouser does not intentionally take on the claims of the opposing view held by conservative political theorists, but his work indirectly provides one of the most compelling refutations of the subjectivist approach of contemporary conservative political theory that I have ever read. Contemporary political and economic theory are, in my view, in Neuhouser's debt for this enlightening treatment of the social and political realms. Readers will appreciate the fact that he conveys these ideas through graceful prose unmarred by impenetrable jargon.

Great book - can teach the next generation boys & girls

This book is very entertaining reading with beautiful illustrations. My 2 yr old daughter loves to hear it, but I think I enjoy it even more. The book is about 4 girls who need to make it in the world. They do not want to be dependent on anyone, but know that being women will make it difficult to become successful. It explains how they learn their trades & land great jobs. In the end, they marry men who love them for who they are and the skills that they have (but marriage was not their only goal in life). In addition, the words of the princess bride can teach a lesson for the next generation.

Great fairy tale with a wink to gender roles
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-04-20
This story has cleverness, humor and, of course, a happy ending. Four orphaned sisters surmise that they need to hide their identities to thrive in a man's world. They go their separate ways, and seven years later return to their mother's grave as a tailor, a hunter, a finger artist and a star gazer. Together, they combine their skills to win jobs at the king's court, and in the course of their service rescue a princess and her four brothers and end up living happily ever after.

The winking starts when the king's mother realizes that the servants are women but can't prove it because the sisters outwit her- not by playing into her stereotypes, but by playing the part and not playing the part. The mother, though she knows she is right, shows compassion and leaves off her pursuit. The princess, however, the seeming damsel in distress, figures it out and proves it quickly (but I won't tell how!).

This entertaining fairytale is a good story on its face but will also provide slightly older readers (ages 7 and up) with the opportunity to talk about gender roles and stereotypes.

an excellent biography

Review Date: 2006-10-04
Fritz Haber was one of the great chemists. This biography, written by the son of one of his co-workers is magnificent in that it is thorough, informative, extremely well-researched, replete with references to additional literature.

Well worth reading by anyone interested by the First World War - the allies went into the war thinking that if worst came to worst, Germany would run out of nitrates, which were then the only known source for the nitrogen needed to make gunpowder, and ergo gunpowder, and be forced to surrender. Little did they reckon with Fritz Haber's genius - he devised a method to extract nitrogen out of the air - and the war tragically continued. Stoltzenberg devotes some thought to what sense this accomplishment made, but other authors may have devoted more pages to this subject. This book will appeal to any reader fascinated by German history, or by the history of chemistry.

This biography illuminates the life of one of the most gifted yet controversial figures of the 20th century. Haber was a pioneer in electrochemistry and thermodynamics and won the Nobel Prize for his synthesis of ammonia, a process essential for both fertilizer and explosives. Haber's work has helped feed billions of people, but he is often remembered for his role in the poison gas attacks of World War I. Despite his ardent patriotism, Haber, a jew by birth, was exiled from his homeland in 1933 by the Nazi party.
