This book has great imfo about both groups. After you readthis you will feel very close to both groups. The authors,DevraSperegen and David Gold must have done a lot of research on all of them! The best part of this book was where they gave you 100 facts on each of the groups. This book also has great pics! This book is a good buy!

A Must For All Music Hall Fans
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-20
Roy Hudd loves Music Hall, Vaudeville, or Variety as it was known after the war. His affection for the subject shows through in his writing, especially when he gives accounts of acts he saw as a child. This book covers the days from the end of the war to the period when television and cinema had all but wiped out old-time 'turns'. My primary criticism is that the book doesn't cover a wide enough period.

In the 1980s and 1990s, live comics and speciality acts have come back into vogue, and it would not have been unfeasible for the book to have covered the entire post-war period.

I can only hope companion volumes covering the adjacent periods will follow soon.

Great help!

As chaplain at a retirement centre, I am always on the lookout for books and worship aids like this. The Hymnal 1982 is a great book for worship, but the print is rather small, and the book a bit heavy, particularly for older eyes and hands. This book was developed with the assistance of the Episcopal Society for Ministry on Aging (ESMA), taking into account the use and popularity of certain hymns in the regular hymnal, and printing the words in large-type fonts, in an easy-to-hold and easy-to-turn-the-pages text.

The hymn selection included consideration for seasonal variety, long-standing use (25 years or more), and familiar melodies. The one great drawback of this book is that there is no musical notation included, even a melody line. As I've discovered many of my retirement centre parishioners know enough music to follow the melody lines (if not more parts as well), this is a disadvantage to the book. Another minor quibble would be that there is no table of contents -- there is an Index of First Lines at the back, but this is less helpful.

The hymn numbers correspond to the numbers in the regular Hymnal 1982; hence, the first hymn is no. 8, 'Morning Has Broken'. Ecumenical standards such as 'Amazing Grace' and more Episcopal hymns such as 'The God of Abraham Praise' are included; other hymns include 'Abide With Me', 'O God, Our Help in Ages Past', 'We Gather Together', 'Rock of Ages', 'Faith of Our Fathers', a good collection of Christmas carols, and several patriotic/national songs. This hymnal would easily work in ecumenical and shared-ministry settings.

A different view of the shtetl
Helpful Votes: 13 out of 15 total.

This edition of "The Stories of David Bergelson" includes 2 short stories and a novella. Bergelson is a rather unknown Russian Yiddish writer who was killed at the age of 38 victim of Stalin's mass executions. He is considered sucessor to Yiddish writers such as Peretz, Mendele, and Sholem Aleichem. He differentiates from them in many aspects: he depicted life at the shtetl when the community was declining, when its member were loosing their religious ties and had to adapt to a new way of life. Bergelson writes for an educated audience and not for the poor masses. In terms of style his use of words is precise, to the point. His many characters have a complex psychological structure, they represent people who feel lonely, alienated, confussed, and with a loss of values.

Useful Classroom addendum

A.C. Cawley's edition of the Wakefield Master's plays and the Early English Text Society editions have provided the touchstone for classroom presentation of studies of the Towneley cycle, but they sacrifice what Jerome McGann calls the "bibliographic codes," that sense of the manuscript's distinctive qualities appearing in such elements as layout on the page, handwriting, and marginalia. This 1976 facsimile makes a useful scholarly and pedagogical counterweight: advanced students in particular should study the manuscript along with the Cawley edition to see how he handles his source. With any luck, someone will eventually produce a color CD-ROM of Huntington HM1: until they do, all interested readers should have this.

This book is a good informative introduction to 17 wind, string and percussion instruments. Written for children ages 4-10. MOre fun for older children. Downside: The photography seems very outdated - has a "seventies" style to it. Would be a great book for a school library or music room.

Will Smith review

Review Date: 2001-02-23
The biography on Will Smith is an interesting and action packed book. I like the book because it told how Will grew up and became big and famous. The book began to get interesting when it mentioned the movie Men In Black. The book started to slow down when they started to talk about his child hood. This book provides much information and detail on Will Smith. I would recomend this book to ages 10 and up.
