This is a great book, and it's a shame it's out of print. It shows it's age a bit (1982), but Vic keeps it pretty timeless by focusing mainly on those concepts which are forever-relevant. The book covers Nordic skiing, and some Alpine touring, and also winter mountaineering. Really though, he's not writing about several distinct hobbies, but rather being very down-to-earth about how to get maximum enjoyment out of the mountains.

My favorite thing about this is the technique covered. Even though this is largely a book about nordic skiing in the mountains, he goes well beyond telemark turns. Also covered, are paralell, wedeln, reverse telemark, and a number of really silly looking ones as well. Practicing one type of turn will help with others, so this is a good way to strengthen overall technique. I think it's perfect for a book about the backcountry because conditions/terrain may be especially unpredictable and it's useful to have a variety of techniques handy. Some of the things this book suggests practicing essentially amount to being ready for some crazy positions you might find yourself in by accident.

Another good thing about this book is the technical discussion of gear. Vic advocates being fully prepared, but keeping gear to a minimum. He discusses technical attributes of skis, bindings, and boots concisely and on a practical level (e.g. how to decide whether your skis should be torsionally-stiff/long/shaped/etc.). What can be found in this part of the book is useful in giving the reader a more thorough understanding of how a ski works, so it's useful for any kind of skiier. Although I've been reading up on this kind of stuff for a while, there were several things that I didn't know or wasn't clear on--this book put them in refreshingly straightforward form.

The author is open-minded and thorough--a powerful combination. He's got a good view of what's important in skiing (enjoyment), and delivers his message clearly and simply. I think this book is a must for anyone heading to the backcountry, or hopping on telemark gear, and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in any kind of skiing/snowboarding/teleboarding/whatever.

I have used this series of guides for my Private, Instrument, Commercial and CFI ratings. Excellent books, just keep in mind that the performance section is based on a Cessna 310 (clearly stated). But the questions for the multi-engine theory section are great and the extra study questions provide as a good rounding out of what you could be asked during your multi-engine checkride.

My whole family loved this unique journal, including my nephew, sons and grandmother. It is a perfect way to start kids on their own world of journal keeping.

Wilke is my all-time favorite author on the subject of turtle care. This book is lovely! There are colorful graphics and wonderful photos. The information is clear and not at all preachy. It is a great book for beginners and seasoned turtle enthusiasts. it offers simple care instructions for the beginner, as well as tips on how to get to know your turtle better. There are even a few tips on training your turtle and developing trust between a turtle and its keeper.

My Water Comes From The Mountains is an educational picture book by Tiffany Fourment that teaches young readers about the natural cycle of water. Looking at the nation's watershed, the Continental Divide, My Water Comes From The Mountains describes the water cycle from evaporation to glacier formation to the zones of life that water passes through, including alpine tundra, prairie, and conifer forest. Also discussed are how human society uses water, treatment processes for water, and what happens to water after it is used. Extensively researched, My Water Comes From The Mountains was prepared with the Niwot Ridge Long Term Ecological Research project of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Reasearch at the University of Colorado, in honor of the International Year of the Mountain. The gentle and realistic color drawings of wildlife and nature by Dorothy Emerling complement this informative and enriching picture book ideal for inquisitive young minds.

Allen E. Roberts, in his book, The Mystic Tie, provides a thoughtful and deliberate accounting of the brotherhood, unity, and universality of Freemasonry. Many issues are discussed in the text ranging from censorship, religion, Masonic research, and leadership. Great read and and I highly suggest this book!

I own several picture books by S Maughan on related subjects. This is reenactment history presented in great photos. Now, we have real photos of the times before photography was invented!

This paper has captured what centuries of economics research has failed to do: understand the connection between teacher quality and economic development. He has created what I call "The Lakdawalla Principle": an analysis of facts, as opposed to hiding behind sketchy mathematical models. Hats off to Lakdawalla and his research team.

Zimmerman unravels this complex situation thoughtfully and thoroughly. She intelligently places Goethals in his acccurate historical context. A great book.
