Primarily a pictorial of weapons and equipment of the Confederacy apparently compiled by Time-Life while doing their series on the Civil War. The photography is excellent and the quality of the book is unquestionable. Well worth it if you are a Civil War buff.

Here it is: the holy of holies. ECHOES OF GLORY is it for the Civil War re-enactor. From the major items such as jackets, muskets, and pants to smaller items like eating utensils, smoking devices, and gambling implements, it's all here. Everything (almost) a soldier of the Confederacy might have had during the period of 1861 through 1865 is here, in beautiful color.

The introduction is a well done over history of the Confederacy's need to self-equip and arm for the conflict. Each chapter has it's own dialogues, each pertaining to the subject matter, but also well written. But, the real wealth is in the photos. Hundreds of them, each beautifully detailing artifacts from the War Between the States.

Re-enactors should especially note the sections on jackets, trousers, and shirts (let's face it, we're limited on musket choices due to the inablilty for most of us to make our own; clothing is something we can better control!). It's obvious several of the better hat makers for re-enactors raided these photo galleries to create their wares.

For the non-re-enactor, there is plenty here to keep your intrest. However, as a former re-enactor myself, I found this tome invaluable during my four year run.

I'm a history teacher and this is the book I use the most in my Civil War research. Very clear and descriptive photos of "authentic" weapons and uniforms. Excellent reference for the reenactor.

This book helps to illuminate a hazy area of history, namely the equipment and uniforms used by the Confederacy. So many "Rebs" did their own thing as far as armaments and accoutrements that there really isn't a comprehensive guide available (or even possible). This book, though, definately goes a long way in providing information for the serious collector of Civil War memorabillia. Data on uniforms, buttons, insignia, weapons, etc. are found here with many color photographs so collectors can see exactly what an item looks like and not have to make do with a sketch.

Definate must for the Civil War collector's library

What a fascinating and interesting book this is. It provide invaluable material to anyone who has a serious interest in the Civil War. This book was made by the editors of Time/Life and I must say that they did their research accurately. This book describes the arms (weapons) and the equipment (from canteens to buttons) that the average Confederate enlisted soldier to the Confederate General used during the Civil War.

Each section of the book is divided into weapons (Pistols, Rifles, etc) and tells not only the type (with great photographs that are in color) but who issued them as well. From Rifles, Guns, Knives, Swords (Officer and Enlisted), to regualar camp knives, they are in this book if they were issued by the Confederate Government. Even those that were homemade are listed in here as well.

The most interesting parts in my opinion are the Uniforms that the Confederate Soldier wore and the flags that were flown by individual regiments. The Confederate Soldier wore a uniform that was diverse as to the regiment each one served in. From home-spun uniforms to those acquired overseas and in stylish clothing stores, those that the editors could find and be able to use are in here (alot of Uniforms, Flags, etc were supplied for the book by the Museum Of The Confederacy). Some of the hats that are in this book, show the holes where bullets either killed the wearer of the hat, or made it a VERY close call. Uniforms great and small are in this as well.

There is also a narrative throughout the book that is easy to follow and VERY interesting. There is a background story to some of the uniforms that tell of the wearer of them, if they died in battle, or lived to a prosperous old age.

The division/regimental flags are also in here and give the story to how they were made, if they were captured, or if they survived the war.

What a great book this is, and it is an absolute must have to any Civil War enthusiast, as well as those who have anytype of interest on the War fought between the states.

This low tech piece of equipment is one of the greatest things available for strength training and physical therapy...and so versatile.

This book was extremely helpful. I learned many new exercises to help strenghten my core. I recommended it to anybody looking for a new challenge to their workouts.

Awesome workout, very easy to customize the programs so that they are `sport- specific'. My diving went really well this year - my vastly improved core was a big aspect of my success. I didn't mind at all the more ripped abs I've got too;).

About two years ago my `spine popper' (chiropractor) taught me some new exercises for my back then got me to buy another book by this author to keep me doing them properly. This past winter I decided to try tri-athlon. I wanted to get stronger but not real bulky. I thought I'd try this new book because you could decide if you wanted to use weights with the exercises or not.

I like the progressions, photos and instructions and yes - some of the harder exercises are REALLY hard! I showed it to my training group and some of the others wanted it too. We're all fans of this core stuff now - we really seem to notice the biggest gains in the swim. I can go harder for longer distances thanks to an incredibly strong midsection. And I agree with AM from La Crosse - the six pack is pretty sweet.

I don't often rave about stuff but this book is pretty cool. I had the opportunity to go to the Athens games last year (rowing). I saw athletes from everywhere dong all this crazy ball and buozu (?) training. When I got home I went looking for a book that had that kind of focus. This is the book I picked and its been amazing about the increase in power I get now. We're just back on the water and I've never felt stronger at the start of the season. If you want a cutting edge source of core training, I'd say this is the book to get.

I just had to have this book. The subject matter was unusual and touched on the social aspects of camp life in the British Army.
The pictures are fabulous.

This is an excellent review of British Campain Furniture.

Each piece is photographed in colour and/or Black & White, discussed and given brief measurements. The "disembled" photos are of great use to anyone who wishes to reconstruct any of the items from the book, as well as satisfying the just plain curious. Some of the gadgets are fantastic.

Unfortunately, like most books of this type, the author is limited by the pieces that he can access within a year or two. I know there were 'Campaign' folding rocking chairs, and I an certain that there are other examples of furniture, with other systems of assembly ( Louis Vouton made a folding-bed-in-a-trunk for the Brazza Expedition in Africa in the late 1800's which survives - there is a single picture in 'Treasure Chests').

I can only hope that the author will be encouraged to keep looking & photographing, and that we may see a second volume in years to come.

How the furniture can be taken apart and stored is fascinating. One dining table and set of four padded chairs and a chaise lounge can be broken down into pieces that fit into two small crates.

There are pictures of the furnishings set up and stored. Often officers lived better overseas than at home. One cartoon depicts a British officer and his wife dining in their home overseas, with a half-dozen servants waiting on them, and then dining at home after retirement, with only one housekeeper.

Nearly half the book is a portfolio of the furnishings and detailed descriptions of manufacturers and furniture makers."

This book is a must have for anyone interested in English antiques, social, military, or naval history. I have never seen another book on this subject and it is filled with very interesting "before" and "after" photographs of dozens and dozens of pieces of campaign furniture "assembled" and "disassembled." I imagine this book has been a great hit in London.

If I would only have the joy to read one book in my lifetime, it should be See Under: Love.

See Under: Love took my breath away, moved me to tears and touched me in the tenderest reaches of my soul. It is brilliant, imaginative, engaging and humane. The way characters, themes and time wind into each other transport the reader to a place far beyond the mundane. I loved every word. Immediately upon finishing, I went back to the first page to reread. My second reading was more deliberate and careful, and I caught much that I had overlooked in my first pass. I am sure that I will reread it again and again.

I originally bought this book after Jonathan Safran Foer enumerated it in his "Five Most Important Books" for an August 2007 Newsweek piece. Foer called it, "The novel of the 21st century" though it was first published in English in 1989. I thank Jonathan Safran Foer for his own works and, here, this recommendation. And in turn, I hope that I can pass this rare jewel on to others. This is my first review (well, not really a review which is elsewhere on Amazon but a recommendation) but I am compelled to do so. Months after the reading, I find myself thinking about See Under: Love and feeling grateful that I experienced it. This is not an easy book to read but the rewards are multifold. David Grossman has taken the worst that man has to offer and spun it into a magical, magnificent ouevre which will touch you with the human spirit and make you proud to be alive.

Words fail. I beg anyone who has been considering buying into Jonathan Safran Foer's hype to instead find themselves a copy of this, the book from which he appears to have stolen most of his ideas, instead.

All hyperbole aside, this wonderful book has few equals. It demands attention, and reflection, and time, and it rewards those willing to invest those things in it beyond compare. Nothing short on a meditation the way our lives are impacted by the moral calculi of others, and the way our own actions reverberate throughout the generations.

As an Israeli who have read it in Hebrew, I would like to add a few words. One thing: this book is entirely different if you read it in Hebrew. It losses a lot in the translation, and not because the translation is bad, rather that the combination of different layers of very special Hebrew combined with Yiddish, along with the cultural context, makes it a book that is an impossible mission for the translator. Of course, you can't ask someone to learn Hebrew just for this book (and this still won't be enough, because he has to be born again as an Israeli and grow up here to understand everything...), but the book has numerous universal aspects that can be translated, and it's still, even after the translation, a must-read.
And now, for the book itself (if there is such a thing the book itself...).
This is by-far the greatest Israeli book that I have ever read. I had one feeling that went along with me throughout the journey: I don't know how the hell he did. I just don't know. Like a magician that makes a trick you just can't figure. The scope. The depth. I cannot describe this book. It defies space and time. It is a masterpiece.

I don't think I am qualified to write a review of this piece of art. Think Toni Morrison on LSD, or maybe Falkner writing in Hebrew as Isaiah, composing in a way never before conceived, about of all things, The Hollocaust! I guess this most twisted example of human depravity requires such a book. However, if I had not read Mr. Grossman's beautiful love narrative, " Someone to Run With" I would not have known at first if it was a work of genius or a tale told by an idiot, and might not have hung in there long enough to declare it the former - 5 stars! However, a second reading may be required to understand the nuances.

One of the best novels I have ever read. Don't miss it!

Beautiful contemporary photographs balanced by just the right amount of historical photos and insightful quotes from the men who flew and fought in them. The best photographic study I have seen.

All shots were superb, specially the dual aircraft, great dynamics, brillant colors, contrast and claraty. Can't ask for better!

This great book is loaded with brilliant and breathtaking photographs of some of the most famous Allied and Axis aircraft of World War II. There are twenty chapters in the book, each being devoted to a different aircraft. From heavy bombers such as the B-17 Flying Fortress to nimble fighters such as the P-51 Mustang, photographer John M. Dibbs brings each one of these warbirds back to life. Accompanying each series of photographs is an informative textual background describing each aircraft and some of the great missions for which it was used.

I found this book in a bargain bin, and what a terrific find it has turned out to be. The photos are simply dazzling, while the text does an excellent job of describing each aircraft in expert detail. My six-year-old son loves to flip through the pages of the book with me, and he's very eager to know about each of the aircraft in the book.

I give this book my highest recommendation. This fine book brings the images of some of the most popular Allied and Axis aircraft to life, and the text is very informative. Open up this book and watch as some "old ghosts" leap off the pages.

As a rabid hobbiyst avaition photog myself I am always interested in seeing what everyone else is doing. And this book makes my best efforts look amatuerish. His sense of composition and editing is nothing short of amazing, his ability to capture the spirit of the aircraft is stunning. Something that I thought was interesting is that most of these images where shot on film originaly.. If you are looking to see what realy skilled aviation photog can do with his camera. This is the book to buy!

...this book has glorious mainly color photographs and interesting text too...watch out though, if you order both this and "Warbird Legends", you will have the same book twice! not that it is such a bad thing!

I got this book from the library and was pleasantly surprised at the details and useful, practical advice on conceiving and executing a japanese garden. The book contains detailed instructions on how to lay out, build, select plans for, and maintain a Japanese-inspired garden. It talks about rocks, rock gardening, ponds, water plants and fish, paths, stepping stones, gates, and plants and plant selections. I found it really helpful in getting ideas to give to our landscape architect. I would recommend this book for anyone that is going to actually build (rather than just enjoy looking at pictures of) a japanese garden.

The book is easy to read and explains the whole concept of Japanese gardening. I learned with it and will be using it to plan my Japanese garden. Very pleased customer!

I bought serveral books about creating Japanese gardens. This book by far the best one that I had. I built a Japanese style Rock Garden so I don't have to mow my lawn. My back yard is built based on some of the pictures and tips I read from this book. The fun part is that you put in your hard work and built the garden you wanted which pays off when your guests give you thumb up. I spent about $5000 on the materials and hours of my own labor on the project. Now I can spent my weekend golfing instead of mowing my lawn. Ouch! My back still hurting from all the hardwork.

I've always wanted to have a Japanese Garden but never got around to doing it. I picked up this book at the library and, WOW, it has really inspired me! Not only am I now drafting up plans to turn a corner of my yard into a Japanese Garden but I showed it to a neighbor and he's thinking of making his backyard into something like the courtyard garden on page 20. I'll probably get a library of books on Japanese Gardening but this book will be the first one I'll buy.

This book is one of the best I ever buy about gardening and landscaping. The pictures alone worth the price.
They gives details to build your garden, makes pounds and falls and it seems so easy that I am starting my own right now.

In recent years, our society has become more and more obsessed about food. Many people consciously count calories, limit fat intake, and cut carbohydrates hoping to become healthy. I was so impressed that I bought 6 additional copies to give to close friends. It's not preachy or radical, just wholesome information. Like the other reviewers, I was appalled of what I learned about food and livestock production, it's impact on the environment thus our economy. I particularly laud the German, French, and Japanese governments for the food production actions they are taking to protect their people. The EU is also instituting humane legislation for chickens that has a deadline of 2012. I consider the current pertinent laws a blatant selling out of the American peoples' health by the USDA and FDA (not from content from this book, but other books and web searches) through lobbying antics by mega international food and chemical producers (most started here and then went international). I also quit Splenda (as a RN I had been one of its strongest proponents to diabetics and overweight persons) and went back to sugar (now organic) and will soon try stevia. I think each of us has a responsibility to make our consumer demands for healthy products well known by no longer purchasing unhealthy food products and notifying our local, state and federal government officials of the same, including the USDA and FDA. Unfortunately money or political votes seem to be the only way to get a message through nowadays. As an aside, Monsanto and the US government own a shared patent on technology that renders a plant's seeds sterile so they cannot be saved for future plantings. Sounds like a bad science fiction movie or a take off from Logan's Run (1976) or a more accurate Soylent Green (1973), but it's really true. In the latter movie, when Charlton Heston says the freeze dried company developed its technolgy for soylent green in Norfolk,VA, I about flipped out that 1973 Hollywood even knew my hometown existed.

Whether you're like me and you were outraged by "Fast Food Nation" and "The Future of Food," or like the author of this book, you simply miss the taste of your grandmother's home-grown peaches, this book is an excellent resource on how to eat Real Food. By Real Food, the writers mean food that is not genetically modified, grown with harmful chemicals, or overly processed. The writers take you through the grocery store, aisle by aisle, explaining exactly what terms such as "free-range," "antibiotic-free," "USDA inspected," and "natural" really mean. It is eye-opening as well as interesting. One thing I particularly like about this book is that the writers do not insist that you must be vegetarian or vegan. They include plenty of information on buying meat, dairy, and eggs that are healthy and sustainable.

I picked up this book one day while at a bookstore and was going to just thumb through it but quickly made note of the ISBN# for later reference. This book is HUGE. Weighing in at 1608 pages I'm grateful it's hard bound so it can survive the use it will get.

The level of detail in this book is something you will be thankful for.

Not for beginners.

As an instructor of computer and networking courses, I have had the opportunity to use and review scores of PC hardware books, and year after year, I always end up using Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PCs. If you are just someone who has never opened a PC case and you want to upgrade some hardware, then this book is for you. If you are someone who wants to truly understand the indepth workings of the PC, then this is the book for you. You can't go wrong with this book.

This book covers nearly the entire PC history. If you want to check out what's inside your "ancient" machines or see what's new in technology this is the book you want. I especially like to see the evolution of computer hardware.

This is a pretty good book about the breed. If you're thinking about getting a Malamute, this is probably a good buy. However, there may be a better book out there...

This book clearly states the pros and cons of having a Malamute. They are as discribed. I wish there was more training information in the book. The history is nice, but more content would be effective. The feeding and other care needs more elaboration. Good overview.

I have owned 2 Malamutes & this is the most informative book I've every read about them. I am getting a new pup this spring & can't wait to use some of the ideas in the book. These are the most beautiful dogs on earth & they love people, they are also the smartest!

Briefly..
We read this book, and others before adopting our Malamute. We found it to be right on the money. Especially important are the parts of the book that discuss on whether you personally are up to adopting a Malamute.
Personally, I wouldn't have another Dog, period. But they are absolutely not for everybody. Better read this book and some others before getting one of these precious and gorgeous animals. If you decide not to, it makes a beautiful addition to any library.

As a prospective Mal owner I found this book very imformative, more so than some of the larger and more expensive books which I have in my collection. Especially the section ARE YOU THE RIGHT PERSON FOR A MAL. I found this especially interesting as a Mal is not suitable for just anyone. A well written book with plenty of good information which some other books don't cover enough. I recommend this book to anyone, new and old Mal owners alike.

fabulous book, covers in detail what you need to know to make a fine paddle, including relative expansion rates of popular woods for paddle making, highly recommended to save your self from making lots of scrap from perfectly good paddle blanks.

Very informative book that covers everything from the historical background of paddle design to a detailed how to on how best to build a paddle. As an avid paddler and woodworker, I found this book to be perfect.

Great Book with lots of useful information. Would have liked a few more paddle designs, but overall, great book.

The book does exactly what it says, tells you about the history of different paddles, tells you how to make simple paddles, then tells you how to make complex paddles, and finally tells you how to traditionally make paddles. Ity really hits the spot for me as someone who likes making stuff, but am not quite ready to make my own canoe yet! I loved this book and am going to give it to my oldman.

I actually made a canoe paddle, and plan on making some more. My new paddle served me admirably on an extended trip. This is as complete a treatment of the subject as one could hope to find. Making a paddle is a reasonably complex process but the authors explain every step with well-illustrated clarity.
