I have a small library on printing and printing technologies. This book is the best single book I own. It's the best single source on printing I've seen, as well. The subject is laid out logically; the theory is provided to allow understanding; the graphics are clear and informative, and frequently provided; the writing style is clear, although a bit "Germanic" in thought-processes, resulting from the translation I assume.
I recommend this book to any printing professional seeking to learn about their field, or to any student of the industry. Just don't drop it on your toes.

Just ordered my english version of this, already having the german language version. The book is top-notch, very clearly explaining and illustrating, both with drawings and photos, the various components and materials used for all types of printing. Its breadth and depth make it a vital reference for anyone involved in the graphic arts industries.

I am teaching this book at our Architectural Engineering Department at the University of Bahrain. Students consider it as an excellent HVAC textbook, easy to understand and covers all their required topics in HVAC for B.Sc. students

This is the best book on this subject I have found. It is aimed at practicing engineers and engineering students however. It is very mathmatical and may not be of much use to technicians.

A Lifesaver

A while ago I found myself having to purchase my 7th computer in 14 years. An initial casual interest had turned into a daily necessity for personal business, business-business, communication and fun.

The 6th computer had crashed - fine one moment, gone the next (luckily a conversation with a friend had prompted me to buy a zip drive and do a full backup only two weeks before.)

I realized I needed to know much more about the options before I purchased, that my peripheral hardware and software needs were steadily increasing, and there were so many terms I just didn't really understand.

I found the Home Office Handbook - thank goodness. Rapidly the mysteries became comprehendible. The guides helped me immensely to intelligently determine what I did and did not need - even to predict which future additions would be compatible. Quick tips and a dose of humor kept it from being a chore.

I know I saved both time and money (and much frustration.) Thank you, Barbara Butler.

Home Office Handbook is great! It tells you what to do with technology in the home office and not just how to decorate the office. And I needed help. I manage a group of apartment buildings at a univerity town and have an office in one of the buildings and another in my home. This book was a major help in figuring out wht I needed in each office and how to connect the offices. It also helped the technician that was working with me.

I bought this book so that I would be able to purchase tools as gifts for my husband without having to ask him what to buy. I figured that would spoil any surprises. I know next to nothing about what to look for when purchasing tools, so this book has been an invaluable reference for me. It has definitely helped me make smart purchases and saved me money because the author does an excellent job of explaining the pros and cons of different tool choices. He also discusses and what to look for when selecting particular tools, so you know exactly what you want befor you make any purchases. I highly recommend this book.

A momentous, sweeping, and emotional novel
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-12
The sequel to "Promise & Honor", and the second volume of a riveting trilogy, Honor & Glory continues author Kim Murphy's Civil War saga. Set in the aftermath of the battle of Fredericksburg, two armies wait for the spring campaign on the Rappahannock River banks. Two sisters are drawn into the war, their loyalties split - one betrothed to a Union major, while the other cannot forgive the Northern army that levelled her home. A momentous, sweeping, and emotional novel.

Historical fiction at its finest

Kim Murphy's second Civil War novel, HONOR & GLORY, takes a roller coaster ride of a journey through smuggling, war prisons, battle wounds, sickness, childbirth, and other tests of endurance--while at the same time depicting the joys and hopes of both Northerners and Southerners who lived and loved during the turbulent time period.

The novel opens after the bloody Battle of Fredericksburg in 1862 and focuses on two Virginian sisters, Amanda and Alice, the former of whom has experienced both widowhood and a new marriage since the war's start. Alice, the younger sister, finds difficulty in accepting her new brother-in-law's background and position in the war--and falls for a former love interest of Amanda's. Despite the familial tension, the two women's relationship grows stronger as they themselves gain strength, shedding Victorian morals and delicacies to do their part in helping ailing soldiers...and to protect their own lives and properties as the war stretches to 1865.

Each central character experiences dark depths of anguish at some point in the novel, yet Murphy also portrays supreme moments of joy that help them persevere and rise above their physical and/or emotional pain. Alice especially stands out as an exceptional character, transforming from a frivolous young lady to a multilayered, heroic woman. And the novel offers one of the most heart-stopping escape scenes ever written.

Either read with its predecessor, PROMISE & HONOR, or standing alone, HONOR & GLORY is an entertaining and emotional example of historical fiction at its finest.

I checked this out from a library. I found it so useful that I bought a copy for my 89-year-old mother to keep at her house and for my siblings to review when we visit. It has great sections on how to handle stairs for those who are not sure-footed, for dealing with ice (difficult for anyone to maneuver), for how to fall if you cannot avoid it, exercises for strengthening muscles, and much more. Every public library, at least, should have this, and probably every household with babyboomers or older.

If only one book on eldercare were to be obtained with the purpose of preserving quality of life, it should be Eric Frederikson's HOW TO AVOID FALLING. Falling is one of the major causes of disability and death in the elderly: the active aging who desire independence must have this guide, which covers all the risks of falling, methods for easily fall-proofing a home, and avoiding common falling hazards outside the home. The remainder provides strengthening exercises and encourages mobility as a way of building muscles and avoiding falls.
