good book with detailed information about each engine parts

I brought a generator over the Internet. When it came, it does not start. Sending it back for replacement will cost about $100 for shipping, also I don't have a way to pack it in its orignal shape -- since I have assembled. In addition, it is over 200 lbs -- way too heavy to box in anything I have.

So I brought this book to try to make it work. I have so far able to adjust the valve to improve the compression based on reading this book. Check the fuel systems and other part. Just there is not enough information from the manufactuer or from this book to be able to tell the carburetor is good or bad, since this book is for gasoline engine and mine is a LPG/NG engine.

Although reading this book did not get the engine started, it is a fine book to read. Recommeneded.

great book for understanding gasoline engines!!!

This book starts out with the simplest 2-stroke engines, explaining different carburetor setups, and goes up through more complicated 4-stroke engines. This book would be a great basis for learning about gasoline engines in general... It also has advice on general maintenance and troubleshooting. Very informative book for learning HOW these things work so that you can fix them.

Good book that goes into a lot of detail

I looked at several small engine repair manuals and I was unimpressed by them. (The Haynes book is particularly disappointing) This one goes into a nice level of explanation of how something (e.g. a carburetor) works, the various types available and then how to trouble shoot it. Knowing how something works is crucial to really trouble shoot an engine.

I am an engineer so I like how this book describes the items function. Obviously some level of technical understanding is necessary to really appreciate an engine manual. But if you don't have that appreciation - you probably aren't trying to fix your own engines. So if you are looking for such a book, I can easily recommend this one.

The knowledge I've gained from this book has also helped with larger pieces of equipment - like full-size tractors. The older tractors (like my John Deere 3010) use the same basic components.

This commentary cuts through the mire of cultural stereotypes placed on the last book of the Holy Bible. Simple, to the point, and a continual companion/handbook to revisit over and over and share with others discouraged by the current popular religious trends that abuse John's Revelation.

Excellent, misses the date, but still strong, conservative

As usual, Homer Hailey is ever the teacher. This commentary on The Revelation is concise and well-developed. His intro is worth the price of the book.....but, I am convinced that the value of the book would have been immeasurably increased had Mr. Hailey taken pains to critically examine the claims for a late 1st century date. Had he done so, I am further convinced that, with his consummate skill as an expositor, he would have provided an even better commentary that hinges on the early date. As conservative a development of the 1000-year nonsense as you will ever read!

Definitely a must read.

Indispensable, definitive!

Why, when in Rome, you could drink the water.

Review Date: 2005-08-25
This book will appeal to two kinds of people: those who have engineering or technical backgrounds, and those who don't. My wife is in the second category. She found the history and details of the water supply gave a fascinating window into ordinary life in Roman times. The problem that every civilization must solve, obtaining and distributing potable water, solved in a characteristically Roman manner by efficient public construction.

As an engineer, I became fascinated with the technical knowledge and skills demonstrated. Both civil engineering and hydraulic engineering expertise, achieving fine results with crude instruments. We marvel at Roman stonework, but keeping a constant slope over several kilometers is more technically difficult.

I found that much of what one knows about aqueducts isn't true. Siphons to cross valleys, instead of more costly and difficult bridges. Manholes at frequent intervals, for manually cleaning out limestone deposits, the bane of the system. Concrete and polished hydraulic cement. Who knew?

While the topics are technical, the writing is clear and self-explanatory, and the text is profusely illustrated. As long as you remember that water runs downhill, you'll be technically comfortable. The text follows the downhill flow of the water through the system, from the lakes or springs, to the cities, to the baths and fountains, to the sewers.

My major complaint is poor availability. Despite Amazon's current (August '05) "normally 3 to 5 weeks" to ship, I've now waited over 30 days for my second copy, and have been advised of at least another 30 day delay. My emailed enquiry to the publisher went unanswered.

I want to share this book with friends, but not my copy. "There are two kinds of fools: those who lend books, and those who return them." So, order yours now. Maybe you'll get it by Christmas. Enjoy!

After reading "Pompeii: A Novel" (Robert Harris) I was keen to read more on the details of the aqueducts that starred in Harris' book and found this book.

If you've even wondered "how did they do it" then this book will tell you. While sometimes a little lacking in punctuation the book flows well and is well illustrated.

I was certainly left with a renewed respect for the Roman engineers after reading this.

And apart from the engineering it gives you an insight into a completely different cultural perspective. Hodge makes the case that, contrary to popular belief, the aqueducts were primarily for what we might view as an extravagance given the cost - public & private baths and water features.

Must have book for Ancient Rome lovers.

I bought this book because it was one of the few recommended books about aqueducts to be recommended to me for my writing about Ancient Rome. I have no engineering experience, but found the book to be very easy to follow and enjoyable to read.

All the questions I had about aqueducts were answered in this book and it gave me more than enough information on the subject.

I wish my history professors in college would have used sections of this book during the discussions on aqueducts because we were taught so little about these engineering miracles.

Shake your Serpent Trance!

Review Date: 2007-04-25
Few contemporary writers come up with fresh and absorbing perspectives and information as consistently as Jan Fries. In Seidways he covers the rarely explored world of trance and possession techniques. The material ranges widely in his illustration of trance techniques and cultural uses, from Mesmer and Austin Osman Spare to Desert Tribesman and Voodoo.

This book does not just give a comprehensive overview of the use of trance techniques through the worlds culture and history however, it also gives simple yet detailed instructions on how to induce trance in yourself - to shake and sway to unheard rhythms, the rhythms of the spirit. As if this were not treat enough, the author also ranges through a selection of myths looking at the power of mythical and magickal creatures - serpents, dragons, giants. Norse and Celtic myths are especially considered for threads of interest and value in this illuminating book. A must-read book to stimulate the mind and the body!

A potent tool on the path of self development.

Jan Fries quickly became one of my favourite magickal authors with his book "Helrunar", in which he mentions this (at the time) forthcoming book on shaking trances. I found his lack of pretence to "ancient tradition passed down through the ages", and his use of Chaos methodology without the egoistic "spookier than thou" attitude which often infects it exceptionally refreshing. When I finally found a copy of Seidways, it impressed me even more than Helrunar. As usual, he begins with a historical survey of shaking or convulsive trances, including both the Norse background from which he derives the term "seid craft" (seid is pronounced "seeth"), and various tribal and shamanic cultures. While the selected bibliography he provides suggests to me that his material is factually accurate, his approach to history emphasizes a potent mythcrafting over academic explication, and presents a powerful tool for self-transformation. After the historical section, he moves on to the practice of convulsive trance. His suggestions for preparation and emphasis on slow, gradual practice renders independent practice much safer than might otherwise be the case. He also gives step by step instructions that are easy to follow, and includes a chapter on communicating and co-operating with what he (and now I) calls the Deep Mind. An altogether excellent book.

I knew about this book for years before buying it earlier in 2007. I always felt it would be a revolutionary text for me, yet somehow I never got around to buying it (admittedly in part due to Mandrake's poor distribution in Australia).

After about 10 pages I decided that Fries is the greatest author on Germanic magic alive. He is able to consider so many perspectives, casually avoids the rigidity of authors such as Thorsson that I found so discouraging as a newbie, and is very open about where research stops and personal opinion starts.

When I finished the book I immediately read it again, and took about 40 pages of notes. Anyone who knows me would find such conscientious reading totally alien to my usual habits!

His descriptions of seething experiences brought up so many memories of experiences I have had during my life, experiences which I have known were magical and which I loved and longed for... but which I felt unable to explore, to grasp a hold of. Well, Fries gives plenty of encouragement and ways into the conscious induction of trance and seething and I have been regularly and spontaneously delving ever since!

This keen attention and love of the experience of spirit, not just the the forms and images of it, is what makes this book so powerful. It correctly assesses mythology to be a door into that which cannot be said, rather than an end in itself.

His summary of different cultural practices is also extremely interesting and helpful. He is clear that all cultures are not interchangeable, but he is also clear that there can be similarities across culture. So rare to find an author with the political good sense to recognise that culture is neither hermetically sealed nor dissolved into the new age sewer!

This book has also helped to awaken my latent connection to snake energy, which I have felt for years and never been able to make sense of. Given that I see Odin as a snake god (Bolverkr, anyone?), I have been given a huge new lease on life in my relationship to my patron god.

A lot of people I know have bought this book at my urgent insistence, I get very aggressive about it. YOU have to read this book. If you get 10% of what I got from it, then you've easily gotten your money's worth.

I read this book in the late 80s when I was first getting into autoloading pistols. It taught me a lot and made me a believer in the tactical superiority of the autoloader. While the book is written for law enforcement officials looking to make a change to autoloaders, it will help the law-abiding private citizen as well make a better selection when shopping for one of these fine weapons. Ayoob is one of the better firearms instructors working today. His insight and advice are thought-provoking and challenging.

This is another very good book, condenses alot of knowledge and explains why the autoloader is indeed the better sidearm for officers, (and firepower IS NOT the first!). I highly recommend this book for those whose department policy types are stuck in the 60's, this will give the arguments to the office pukes and city managers who use prime time television for ideas. I really recommend this book for police officers, line AND administration types.

Very much a knife, fork spoon book on shooting. Very well written by one of the best in the field.

Ayoob gives the reasons for a police department switching to the semi-automatic pistol. The advantages and disadvantages of the pistol and revolver are reviewed. While the arguments are aimed at the police officer they would also apply to the person looking for a personal defense sidearm.

As always a pleasure to read and very useful. If you want practical information this is a good book for you cop or civilian.

I was indeed fortunate to obtain a copy of Shop Savvy about twelve years ago and it has been one of my favorite books for years. I keep it at the head of our bed and have spent countless hours reading all the really neat shop tips Roy has compiled. Though it was written in the 80s, the information in this book is timeless and completely useful in today's world. This book is a must for the home workshop and will remain extremely valueable and useful for many years to come. I have enjoyed the book so much I even called the author to tell him how much I have enjoyed his book over the years. He is in his 80s now and will not be blessing us with a follow on. I have managed to make some of the tools he recommends and have been able to purchase some of the tools pictured. I have also applied many of his tips in everyday activities over the years and have never found anything he recommended to fail to work following the descriptions.
The photographs are very good and the written descriptions are outstanding. Without this book to explain the usefulness of the tools/techniques he explains I would have passed them by without ever realizing what I was missing.
If there was ever a book that was the ideal gift for the woodworker, metalworker, home repair specialist, or future engineer/technician this is it. I would recommend this book for all ages and skill levels. If I were a shop teacher at a school I would have this book available to all the students as a reference work.
I think so much of this book I refuse to loan it to anyone as I feel it will not return to my possession. I feel that anyone that likes to work with his hands and purchases this book will never regret the expense. I count it as an investment that has paid off handsomely with the knowledge he imparts.

Every home workshop person should have this book!!!

This book is just plain neat! I acquired the book about a year and a half ago and I have used many of the techniques detailed in the book since that time. On more than one occasion, I have just sat reading about many of Mr. Moungovan's projects and admiring his accumulated knowledge and skill.

For a woodworker to get a view into the world of the metal worker, and vice versa, IS EXTREMELY USEFUL AND PRACTICAL -- especially in this day of one-size-fits-all Home Depot's and the like. What do I mean by that? Most of us had to spend many years in the company of serious practitioners to have the kind of skills and techniques - at-the-ready - like those detailed in Mr. Moungovan's book. I am a woodworker who has a bench metal lathe, but not until I acquired this book did I realize the full utility of this piece of equipment! I use an oxyacetylene torch now. The book conveys a definite confidence about home workshop problem solving. I'm still primarily a woodworker, but now I have so many more approaches, materials, and techniques available to me. This book is unique. It will get you over the hump and help you maintain a real and genuinely useful home workshop.

Seriously, here we have a guy -- Roy Moungovan -- who has been there and done it! Hats off to Mr. Moungovan and I really respect what he has accomplished here.

Review Date: 2000-07-03
One of the authors writes, "This book is the 'rebreathers for dummies' text". While not a technical text, per se, it is much more than a "dummies" handbook. It is a concise, well-written guide to both the history and current state of rebreather diving systems. It is also well-illustrated, with excellent diagrams and tables. After reading this book the reader will have a good grounding in rebreather technology, and its important safety issues, and be able to not only evaluate the relative advantages and disadvantages of the increasing number of recreational rebreathers being offered for sale, but whether this kind of technical diving is really suited for them. Rebreathers do not suffer fools, and this kind of diving is not a substitute for the relative simplicity of open circuit SCUBA using compressed air. By the way, while not mandatory, it is invaluable if the reader is familiar with the principles of Nitrox diving.

Carlo Petrini has been attempting to preserve a more traditional view of food for a long time, this book lays out his current thinking in a clear and concise layering of understanding food in culture (gastronomy), understanding quality (good, clean, fair food), and the tools to put these ideas to work in the world going forward.
As we reconstitute a food culture based on transparency and quality in the USA and hopefully across the globe, this book provides key ideas related to respect for diversity of food products, respect for food in culture, and respect for the work associated with food that can serve to guide us. This book made me think and laugh, and I recommend it highly.

Marvellous introduction to the Slow Food movement

Review Date: 2007-12-08
More than a reaction to Fast Food's arrival in Italy, Slow Food
has evolved into a global movement encompassing many different actions to improve what we all taste and eat.
It's not about eating well in the privileged, Michelin-starred table sense. It's about recognizing everyone's barriers to eating well and judging the quality of our food on three levels, asking whether it is good, clean and fair. (The book's original title is just that: Buono, pulito e Giusto).
The movement's founder wrote this book to set out a new definition of gastronomy, enumerating some of the issues facing our food supply and helping to turn a thinking eater to positive action.
Beautifully translated, Slow Food Nation is a cogent & readable introduction to what Slow Food is about. Highly recommended!

Carlo Petrini gave a lecture at NCSU in Raleigh earlier this year. His talk was in Italian, but his ideas were universal: if we want happiness and peace, we're going to have to change the way we eat.

The book is fantastic. It is beautifully written, powerful, and balances scientific data and understanding with cultural histories and sensible aestheics. His proposal of a new branch of science, gastronomy, is as revolutionary as Freud's proposal to study the human psyche or David Kelley's efforts to study design as a science.

This book is The Inconvenient Truth for those who eat. But it is also a far more optimistic book, for the solution to the problem of industrial agriculture is to seek out good food, to meet and learn about the farms and farmers who grow it, and the reward is pleasure.

The Introduction by Alice Waters is, like the food at Chez Panisse, a sensual as well as a sensible delight.

This is a great book to buy, read, and then share with others, all around the world.

This is an excellent program for learning to speak French the way it's supposed to be spoken. School classes teaches the hard stuff, like grammar, etc., and not exactly how to speak/listen to the language. We tried a few other programs and were fairly disappointed until we got SmartFrench. This is an excellent program where you learn to speak, and as importantly, listen to French the way it's supposed to be spoken at different speeds. This first set of CDs (Introduction Vol 1 and Vol 2) will give you an introduction to simple everyday words, as well as some fundamental French language structure, and how to use them. Also, the 5 most used verbs are explained on their usage.

Finally, if you're an absolute beginner in the French language, this Vol 1 and Vol 2 will get you started in the right direction. Afterwards, the next sets (SmartFrench Beginner, Intermediate/Advanced) will get you further in developing the right speaking/listening skills. This program focuses mainly on the speaking/listening aspect of the language and it does it extremely well. This SmartFrench program should be used in conjunction with reading, watching French TV/movies, and working with other French grammar programs if you want total fluency in the language. Enjoy!

I love using it, and I recommend it strongly.

This method works. Period. I have a bookshelf full of French language learning tools (books, CD's, flashcards), and they seem useless now that I am using SmartFrench. I listen to it six days a week. I'm going to be able to converse at length with someone on the street in Paris when we go this summer. I have been studying French almost daily for 3 months, and I was to the point where I wished for a program (like this new SmartFrench method!) that would just teach the basics: the most used verbs, and an easy way to become proficient in counting (pay attention to how many times a day you say numbers and you'll see why it's critical in learning a foreign language). Because I'm tired of only learning to ask, "I would like a croissant", or "Where is the bathroom?", I am thrilled that this method is helping me to have a two-way conversation in French. I'm already speaking French to my twin (a French speaker) and she just laughs--she is so shocked at my progress.

This is a simple, simple program. The SmartFrench Audio Cds Beg I, Vol. 1 Vol. 2 (separate purchases) figured out which essential vocabulary words, verbs (4 of them), and phrases you need to know to speak French quickly. This method also teaches you counting. It's unbelievable that this simple, easy approach has never been done before. I'm glad someone finally did it! Some of the most successful, useful inventions become obvious to the rest of us after someone comes up with the idea, and we smack our foreheads with the palm of our hands thinking, "Why didn't I think of that? It's so obvious!" SmartFrench is like that.

The teacher on the CD is really gifted. He speaks at a perfect speed, or tempo, his voice is easy to listen to, and he's SMART! It's literally like taking a French class without having to go to school. He gives you tips, clues, and ideas on how to remember things. You get the sense that he truly, truly wants to help you become proficient in speaking French.

Have you felt like giving up on learning French? Try this program and you'll get excited about it again. Have a Francophile in your life? This would be the PERFECT GIFT for them.

Side note:
*Pay attention to which SmartFrench program you want. The titles are very similar. This program is called Beginner 1 Volume 1, and Beginner 1 Volume 2.
*Do not confuse the title with the CD entitled simply "Beginner Level"! That "Beginner Level" CD and the "Intermediate/Advanced Level" CD are also great, but have a different approach (VERY effective). Those CD's help tune your ear to the French language as you listen to native French speakers, at the same time teaching you to speak along with a really cool, innovative approach.
*The CD-Rom is also great. Very interactive. Nice to see the native French people speaking. Helps me to understand how to pronounce things even better and to see typical French mannerisms.
