Now, I'm a believer.......Review Date: 2004-12-31
Many pet birds are passed on by owners who are dead, too old, too sick, or move to less accommodating quarters. Many of these older birds need only a short period of getting to know you and TLC to become your best buddy. I've become a believer. Having adopted two Cockatiels two years ago who had terrorized everyone at the animal shelter and had them become two big sweeties I know what a little TLC can do. The sweetest bird I own, however, is a "hand-me-down Conure" with two previous owners. My Conure is also the biggest bird I own and the least nippy. Every morning he says "Give me a kiss" which I happily do with a "Thank-you" as my reward. "Used" birds frequently can talk and have learned cute tricks.
Athan offers all sorts of tips on how to get your birds to comply with various challenges you might offer such as bathing, destroying toys instead of your books, and kissing not nipping when you offer your cheek or stick your hand in their cage. In her section on "The Corrective Environment" she shows how many of the tics the new-old bird learned were brought on by cramped, boring, and/or dirty quarters. It is amazing what a little space and a new toy will do to improve an outlook.

Dependable and deliciousReview Date: 2007-06-16
I own far too many cookbooks, but this one is kept on the 'short shelf' of books I use regularly. Yesterday I made the Velvet Bundt Cake for my daughter's teacher as a gift. The recipe comes together easily and bakes into a fragrant cake with a beautiful texture. I've never actually gotten around to making the glaze for the cake - it's heavenly alone, but I'm sure glaze fans will enjoy it :)
The Chocolate Swirl Cake is also a family favorite. A vanilla cake batter is made, half is put in the bundt pan, and then chocolate syrup is stirred into the remaining half and poured over the vanilla. The cake bakes into a beautiful and delicious creation. Again, half the time I never get around to making the simple glaze, but I feel it doesn't suffer a bit. Guild the lily if you must... The swirl cake includes the steps to make your own chocolate syrup - it's fast and easy, and I recommend you make the homemade over store-bought if you have the time.
My favorite bread is the Alabama Light Bread - the texture of the finished bread is amazing, and a favorite to give to friends.
Other favorites from the book include: Tennessee Jam Cake with Brown Sugar Frosting; Cappuccino Cheesecake; Fudge Meltaways; Blackberry-Peach Pie; Jam Tart; Eggnog Bread; Gingerbread with Lemon Icing; Angel Biscuits; Oatmeal Bread (heaven!); Cinnamon Bread.

luvin' from the ovenReview Date: 2005-11-19
So. when I heard that she had written a cook book, I thought "just what we all need - another cook book!" But, was I ever surprised.
This book is about baking, and as I began to browse through the many recipes with titles such as Fudge Meltaways, Pecan Sandies, Nanny's Swedish Rye Bread, and Mom's Gingerbread with Lemon Icing, I was immediately transported back to my childhood, with warm remembrances of coming home after school, and inhaling those sweet smells from the oven that we all, as kids, coveted from our mother's and grandmother's kitchens. I have already tried about half a dozen of these truly delectible desserts and breads, and cannot wait to try many more. I mean, come on - Blue-Ribbon Chocolate Cake with White Chocolate - Creams Cheese Frosting! So what's another couple of hours at the gym!

Procurement strategies that add real valueReview Date: 2007-01-26
Although the talk of the shift from the purely tactical to the strategic has been around for many years now, actual implementation of strategically focused supply chain has simply not happened at many organizations. Why? The authors of this book are eloquently blunt: a "lack of understanding of the opportunities presented by supply-side performance" at the senior executive level.
And what is the sine qua non of a truly strategic supply chain? Leadership and understanding from senior executives. So where to begin? Slipping Straight to the Bottom Line into the executive suites would be a good start.
The strength of this text is its clear and lucid presentation of a "step-by-step" roadmap for executives on how to implement supply management transformation that directly produces bottom-line results. Illustrating straight-forward principles with compelling examples, it shows how executives can create an environment in which they can expect to see improved performance quarter over quarter and year over year.
If I have one criticism of the book it is that its subtitle might suggest that it can be overlooked by the non-executive. That would be a mistake. Yes, it's a "must read" for the senior executive, but it's also an essential text for anyone, including the currently mid-career procurement or supply chain professional, who plans to be one.

I was very pleased with the writing style used by the author. It did not read like a textbook with listing of fact after fact. A telling book of fiction based on fact!Review Date: 2007-07-18
Or, shall I say "faction," for much of your information is based on water statistics and facts that define today's water reality.
Water, Inc. is a page-turning book that weaves a scenario that with little doubt reflects today's water challenges. A reality whereby our governments have become transparent pawns of the ever-growing and powerful transnational corporations. Corporations who often pay homage to the alter of short-term gain regardless of the long-term deadly consequence to our beleaguered world of life.
I have researched and written about water for over thirty years - and am impressed by how Water, Inc. provides accurate and sometimes frightening information, while at the same giving the reader a sense of today's culture. From the homes and board rooms of the rich and powerful, to the soul-searching choices as to what is important in one's Earthly passage - Burstyn provides us with insights that touch all walks of life.
In my mind, Water, Inc. is a true reflection of the current water crisis - and is a book that reinforces and educates us as to how water is the mysterious by yet common denominator that connects all people of all walks of life and beliefs.
Great summer readReview Date: 2005-06-13
a relevant thrillerReview Date: 2005-07-20
Though weighty matters abound, Water, Inc, is highly plot driven (indeed, it is a page turner with substance); filled with characters whose decisions and actions force questions of life and death, personal security and selflessness; exacting ethical and moral judgements about their personal/ political contracts and what such values really entail.
After reading Burstyn's book, perhaps (like me) your summer, if not weather in general, might be viewed or experienced very differently in the future. Such is the effect of this compelling read; and proof too, that intelligent and interesting alternative perspectives can exist, thrive and contribute to the round table discussion of our modern plight.
I commend the author's bravery.

"Canada has water! Let's get it!"Review Date: 2005-09-10
Bill Greele is a financier well versed in Canada's water resources. He also has no illusions about his country's increasing demand for this rapidly diminishing resource. Water has been drained from the watercourses of the United States. What water remains in streams is highly polluted. The underground aquifer is being pumped dry for irrigation, industry and - golf courses? This demand is exceeding supply and Greele wants to provide for the market. He also wants to pocket the profits providing new water can bring. With sheer force of will, Greele assembles a consortium of investors to create an extraction and pipeline project. His field agents have decided Quebec, with its "nationalist" aspirations is highly vulnerable to Greele's ambitious plan. All he needs is an agreement in principle to begin operations.
In thrillers, seemingly minor events may have unexpected impact, bringing together unlikely people and leading to barely feasible results. In this book, a former Air Force officer sees his proposal for a fuel-efficient aircraft summarily dumped, diverting the funds to the water plan. Although not well versed in Canadian issues, Malcolm Macpherson's environmentally aware - the proposed aircraft would have been both cost-effective and less polluting of the atmosphere. When he learns of the Quebec pipeline project, Malcolm wants to scupper it. He's clearly out of his depth. Bill Greele has a long reach and will use whatever means necessary to achieve his goals.
Macpherson encounters environmentalist Claire Davidowicz. She's not the granny-glasses shirtwaist dress sort of activist. Claire's a hard-bitten businesswoman with good contacts and knowledge of the paths of power. Macpherson has inadvertantly selected well, but neither are prepared to face the challenges arising before them. Greele's long reach extends into many places. He doesn't influence politicians, he owns them. They are able to do his bidding and in the current US administration with its "cochon" of a President, more than willing. Out of their ken, pressure, great pressure is applied to the Quebec Separatiste government to approve the proposal quickly. Greele and his cohorts have no qualms about using whatever is needed to complete the project. Murder isn't beyond their ethics.
Privatising water has been in the works here for some time. Once the hydro system was "off-loaded" from government control, little stood in the way of other proposals. One, a super pipeline from the North was forwarded, but it was costly. Costly, too, in terms of envronmental conditions. The oil pipeline remains an enduring example of the kind of impact such a construction can have. Greele is aware of these things, couching his scheme in terms of limited withdrawal. Others, knowing how climate change has already affected Canada's water supplies, are sceptical. Snow cover has dropped, and water supplies with it. The Great Lakes are at reduced levels and the major river systems suffering accordingly. Aware of these trends, Canadian environmentalists are suspicious of water highjacking proposals. Although the rest of Canada appears uninterested in what is transpiring in "La Belle Province", Quebec environmentalists are quick and vocal in their response to the proposal. For Greele, things are getting out of hand and he must move quickly and forcefully himself. Popular opinion translates into votes and a change in government would gain him little or nothing.
Burstyn writes well in the best thriller tradition. She engages a large cast to implement her story of intrigue, deception and manipulation. Her characters develop well for a first-time novelist. Burstyn maintains good control over them. If they represent some extremes of type, that is only to be expected in such a narrative. Even the minor characters are portrayed well. None are extraneous to the story, with each individual depicted and placed expertly. Except for the pace of events, there's little false or hollow here as the persona struggle for success and, sometimes, survival. With events moving so rapidly, there's little cause for the reader to feel bogged down in technicalities. She understands the "business ethic". We are given enough information to see why she's concerned over a resource grab in Canada. Her long career in environmental issues has served her well in that regard. She builds the plot effectively, without meaningless side events to distract the reader. It's a highly readable adventure, with a strong, serious message to take away from the account. Water is precious. Burstyn wants you to be aware of that and be prepared to take your own steps to keep it available. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

3D-Groundwater Modeling with PMWINReview Date: 2001-11-14
excellent primary text with latest software from start 2 endReview Date: 2001-07-24
With PMWIN ,groundwater modeling has never been so easy.It is more than a pre and post processor of MODFLOW family (88,96 or 2000);it is a great modeling environment in which you can find what you needed. You can also realize your all modeling and contaminant transport dreams with using all MOC3D, MT3D, PHT3D or RT3D family ( it was a dream for me ).
PMWIN is an advanced environment which has a digitizer, field interpolater, field generator and environment for the background images or dxf files. You can import vector or raster based images...create your own georeferenced background maps. You can interpolate your datas by using FIELDinterpolater and export your kriging results just in a minute with field generator. You can find 4 different interpolation methos. The most complex 3D preprocessing, such as surface or layer property routines take max.30 minutes. You can enter your values to cells, either in cell by cell method or in zonal method or using interchange options from the field interpolater program.
The PMWIN has a preference options the simulation can be performed either with MODFLOW 88,96 or 2000.The all datas will be controlled by the PMWIN, if needed you will be directed for the deficit inputs. After the modflow simulation has finished, the RESULTextractor gets your results in a matrix dialog. If you prefer to open your datas in an other application such as SURFER, it is also possible, you can export your matrix result. PMWIN creates two output files; one of them USGS's *.nam file, the other is the PMWIN's *.pm5 file. For example if you have only GE, you can also visualize your modflow code simulation results in GE environment because GE reads the modflows *.nam files.
If you have GE (it is an optional, low cost 3D visualization tool.It is the cheapest, the best and the easiest tool in the industry).I have tried the all other visulalzation tools, GE is the best, GE is the simple. If you wonder about the prices, it app.250 USD.The most complex and troublous datas will be shown so clearly in 2 minutes.PMWIN and GE or some other add on modules work seamlessly and perfect. The author and the programmer Prof.Wen-Hsing CHAING had thought everything.I have examined PMWIN with the most complex problems, the program has never stooped or the operating system has never collapsed. The PMWIN 5.1.7 permits 250.000 cells but with MF2K add on modules it can be reached up 640.000 cells. Again no problem, no colapse in system. If your operating system is stable, it works so unique.
If you are an unexperienced modeler or beginner,it is not problem. After one or two day with this book; definitely you will become more familiar. It is so simple that the visualization processes take just 2 minutes...you can create your own animations and import your animation scenes in many digital formats such as *.BMP, *.GIF and modify there and present.
With some additional add on modules which have been created again by the Authors of the book, you can merge with other modeling tools such as RT3D or PHT3D.I have contacted to Prof.wen-Hsing CHAING and learned that there will be a lot of add on modules...one of them is the surface water/groundwater interaction modules.I have also learned that GE will be used for the presentation of the surface waters and the meteorological datas. It means, PMWIN will be the best software in this industry. Many of the commercial modflow processors are still using Modflow 96. The MODFLOW 2000, PEST-ASP and the late version of the UCODE had been added in April 2001 to PMWIN.And it works without any problem since April 2001. I have contacted and got more additional information about the PMWIN and the book. I am gratefull to Prof.Kinzelbach and Prof.Wen-Hsiang CHAING who has written 3D GROUNDWATER MODELING WITH PMWIN and created, developed the PMWIN, GE and MODFLOW 2000 add on modules.I have found the best software and the best TEXTBOOK.This book is really excellent and can be advised both to the students, practical engineers and advanced groundwater modelers, as a compherensive guide to modeling and complete the exercises to refresh their knowledges. And also... Especially for the professors , this book will be an excellent primary text for a university course, or as asupplement to an existing curriculum.

Admittedly, solving 30+ problems a lesson can be a challenge, however, this process increases one's speed and accuracy over time and as my daughter said, it helped her "to make peace with math." Math is like learning how to play a musical instrument; it takes practice and self-discipline, but it's well worth the effort. Understanding math, like being proficient at reading and writing, is one of those practical skills that make life so much easier.
Using this incremental method of learning made homeschooling through high school a breeze and our college-age children sailed through their college math courses as well. In hindsight, it would be easy to choose it again.
