A good guide for beginners to the exciting sport of sport climbing. Edward Voeller explores the basics for first time sport climbers with this well illustrated book. Advanced climbers will also benefit from some of the tips offered. The book is well balanced, taking you through "starting and kitting out" to climbing techniques.

Snoopy the world-famous Bealge Scout goes for a hike
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-25
This Ready-to-Read "Peanuts" book focuses on Snoops as the world-famous Beagle Scout who leads Woodstock and his friends into the wilderness. Young readers get to follow this intrepid group as they hike through the woods, endure thunderstorms, cross tall grass and high bridges, all while Charlie Brown worries about Snoopy and Lucy comments on his strange pet. Snoopy tries to be a good leader, but his plans do not go well. You know how you can tell? Because there are two pages in the entire story where Snoopy has his "cool" eyes; those are where they are just diagonal slits. There is one early on and one at the end, but in between there are few moments when Snoopy is really in control.

"Take a Hike, Snoopy!" is based on the comic strips of Charles M. Schulz, adapted by Judy Katschke with art by Nick and Peter LoBianco (who have really gotten good at doing the "Peanuts" gang). This is a Level 2 book, which stresses reading independently (I have yet to see a "Peanuts" book that is not a Level 2 reader) by challenging readers with more-complex stories and varied sentence structure. There is also an episodic nature to the book that comes from adapting four panel daily comic strips. Clearly "Peanuts" is well suited for this task.

An English major Mister Roberts was not, however "Ten Consecutive Years Living In Cars: Living, Traveling, Camping" provides a well-organized detailed outline of every aspect of car living that one could think of. The book is written in outline-style manual form and is organized logically. However, the author invents and introduces a lot of meaningless abbreviations and terminology which did make the book tedious to read at first (and sometimes subsequently, although it gets amusing after a while) The book is brimming with ideas and information which overrides the poor quality of writing, and thus it rightfully earns its four stars. Don't move into your Volvo until you check this out.

My kids were fascinated by this story
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-04
The author tells his story of being the first Canadian to climb Mt. Everest. He talks a lot about his determination and will to do more than his best, and ends the book with a very positive message. My 6-yr-old son is really into Mt. Everest, so we bought this for a birthday present. Both he and his 8-yr-old sister (who is sick of hearing her brother talk endlessly about Mt. Everest) were totally engrossed in Laurie's story.

The climb did result in four deaths, so be forewarned when reading this with younger children.

Hiking Basics for Kids and their Parents
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-24
Trekking on a Trail provides basic hiking information and suggestions for simple activites. A substantial portion of this book is devoted to safety information and lists of gear hikers should carry or wear. Much of this information, such as what sort of socks to wear and how to buy a pack, seems more aimed at parents than kids.

The book includes...

a section on stretches to use when warming up for a hike,
a set of suggestions for gear, clothing and food to carry,
a section on different kinds of packs,
a simple map reading lesson,
advice on staying found, what to do when lost, and what to pack for an emergency and for first aid,
a section on reading the weather,
a section on what bugs and plants to avoid,
a few suggestions for trail snacks,
a handful of suggested activities for children on hikes, such as making a hiking journal, hiking stick and skipping rocks on water.

Fran Lee provides colorful and charming illustrations throughout that may make the some of the otherwise dry material in the book more appealing to children.
