Camping Books

ISBN 0870441965 - Published in 1976 by National Geographic Society, Camping Adventure's likely audience seems remarkably small today. The book is hardly dated at all, largely due to the fact that nature and camping are rather timeless.

With many large color photos and few words, Camping Adventure tells the basics of a family's time in the wilderness. They hike, cook over a fire, remember to douse it properly, set up a tent, store their food safe from bears and more.

Most of the photos contain few specific clues to the era, although I don't think they even make those knee high socks with the colored stripes anymore and the Spiderman t-shirt was worth a giggle, as was the poor boy wearing a denim-like shirt with a butterfly on it. Still, shots of nature will always withstand the test of time.

Not really an adventure story, this book would probably be a nice introduction to camping for young kids to get the idea before they set out. The front and back endpages have equipment in photos of "things to take when you go camping" and a numbered list of the items pictured. This, too, is basically the same through the decades - however, Wyler's unsweetened lemonade mix listed as an energy food... I'm not too sure about that. If you're heading for the great outdoors with the family, this might be a nice way to introduce younger ones to some basics beforehand.

This is the classic book on two significant national parks in Baja. This book is quite old, but likely is the best resource available for San Pedro Martir National Park.

It is too bad that no one has done a similar book more recently. This book along with a map by Jerry Schad is virtually all the published information on the fabulous San Pedro Martir National Park.

I've been camping since I was a baby ... and this book has some hidden gems I'd never heard of. I like that you can search certain areas of nor cal easier then just on the web. Fo the price this book is a great value.

This is a nice basic campground review book. The best thing about it is how the campgrounds are organized and mapped. Looking through the book you will immediatly know where and in which parks/forests/recreation area the camprounds are located, and which other campgrounds are nearby. The desriptions, however, are pretty bare boned. This would be nice to buy this along with a more indepth, descriptive book, like "the best in tent camping, so cal" which I also have and recommend highly.

This book is helpful for us because we prefer public campgrounds, but if you're looking for a comprehensive campground book in Tennessee, this isn't it. With our preferences and the way the book is organized, it is easy for us to find a good campground. I do wish that season information were included.

Camping Year Round is a pretty good book, it was published in 1983 but it is not too much out of date, I really think the book should be called BackPacking or maybe Hiking year round, since he mostly concentrates on camping while on long hikes. The chapters include: The Outdoors in the Four Seasons, Places to Go, How to Plan Your Trips, The Gear you'll Need, Food and Cooking in the Outdoors, Shelter in the Wilderness, How to Find Your Way, Living Outdoors in the Snow, Living Outdoors in the Desert, Personal Safety, and more. This is a great book to read to prepare yourself for going in to the great outdoors, plus it has a few nice black and white pictures. This is more for the beginner than the experienced.

Having been involved in Scouting and camping since 1965 I found this book to be a great review of the basic skills I was taught as a youth. In todays world of high tech camping gadgets this book brings you back to "bucket stoves". While I realy enjoyed this book I found it to be too heavey into outdoor baking and lacking in certain areas such as outdoor sanition and how to set up a tarp without it blowing down. But I guess everything can't be covered in one book. I felt this book was well worth reading for everyone who ventures farther than their backyard on a camping trip.

I have read the book and find it packed with all the information needed for a sucessful trip. It supplies helpful information about the possible hazards along the river. Much info about camp sites and resupply sites along the riverFor a small book it is loaded with pertinent information and all the phone numbers you might want to call.Nice river pictures to supplement the text.This book has what you need for a sucessful trip and I have just ordered the video companion to the book.

I like it because it is a good book to read because it talks about camping and it is to kids or camping and they are really scared!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I first read this book when I was 8 or nine years old and it stuck in my mind until I tried to search for it recently. Being a New Zealand author, I thought it would be easy. I soon discovered that the book was only available in the U.S! This is a great book to read for children who are interested in reading chapter books. The chapters aren't too long and the language used is very easily understood - perhaps a little dated though. Nonetheless, Clancy's cabin is a great story of hunting for lost treasure!
