Another fine book from a great series

The basic essentials series are terrific little books. Long enough to provide everything you need to know about a topic such as wilderness weather, outdoor cooking, or backpacking, yet short enough to keep you from reading too much extra and unneccesary stuff. Camping can be dangerous even for the most experianced, things happen. You need to be prepared and this book will help you, in addition I reccommend a Red Cross Basic First Aid class. Covers all the basics starting from first aid to helping the victim of a serious accident stay alive and comfortable util the professional rescuers arive. Covers wounds, abdominal pains, bites and stings, CPR, heat or cold exposure , wrap sprains, fractures and dislocated joints. as well as lists of essential items for an outdoor first aid kit.

The book helps you build the proper first aid kit depending on your type of need with its suggested lists of items. An effecient 68 pages in length with very helpful illustrations, is softcover and a good small size for packing. This is a good book to keep at home too, and keep a copy in your car trunk as well. You might also consider adding another book from the Basic Essentials Series, Wilderness Survival. I highly reccommend this and others in the series.

Not bad! However, I would have preferred a little more depth being in the medical profession. It is a good book for the novice. Bone and joint injuries was done very well as was the physical examination section. It is a nice book for campers and naturalists.

Even a city boy will love this collection

I was raised in the city, with almost no exposure to fishing and hunting. (Brooklyn c. 1975, the only shooting I knew was an occasional gun shot outside my apartment building in the middle of the night.) For a city boy like me, this book was a wonderful introduction into love of outdoors through hunting and fishing.

This collection contains over 50 stories from Field & Stream, ranging from 3-12 pages. Nature, calm or threatening, is a protagonist in every story. We sense how much the early 20th century landscape has been overrun by human sprawl.

There are many other wonderful themes in this collection - courage, fear, lost and found friendship. Among my favorites were the handful of stories about old hunters and their beloved dogs.

This book will transport you to another era - one very much worth traveling to. My only critique is women rarely appear in these pages, reflecting a strongly male-oriented editorial hand.

A Must-Have Outdoors Book.

Of all the books I've gotten as a gift throught the years, this was the most pleasant find. The book has some terrific short stories from Field & Stream, with great adventures of all aspects of the outdoors. It also has classic illustrations of old F&S covers. I'd recommend this as a must have for any outdoorsman's library.

Excellent Breadth but Has a bit of Overkill

This is a very well done work. This book is not that big, but the breath it covers is pretty amazing.

That being said, there are times he goes pretty far overboard. He has a section about tents you can make and he talks a little being a boy scout in the 50's. This section may have had relevance then, but it doesn't now, so don't include it.

A good counter point to this book is the very fine work by Michael Rutter called Camping Made Easy.

Good but similar to his other books

I really like this book and I gave it 5 stars because it has some really great ideas that are worth a ton (they made camping more fun). However, there is some filler and this is very similar to his other books. This is definitely a book that could be shared amoung friends (try or write down a few ideas and pass it on).

His best ideas (which are also coved in his other books) are:

1. Using a ground cloth inside the tent.
2. Basic Rope work and knots (he keeps it very simple which is good)
3. Use of a tarp (and how to modify it).
4. Waterproof packing (garbage bag inside the nylon stuff sack)
5. Make your own sheath.
6. Bring a sponge for cleaning your tent.
7. How to get dry wood and start a fire.

Each of these gets a page or more. There are lots of other tid bits but most did not strike me as worth the space.

His other book, Basic Camping, is more of a book to read while this was more of a alphabetical reference or list of ideas. Both are good but if I had to get only one it would be Basic Camping.

This book is about Logan's trip down the Suwannee River. I read this book before I made my first trip. This book will give you an idea about the trip. It helped me prepare for the trip with a checklist of suggested camping gear, campgroung info (if needed, I only camped on the white sand bars) a list of canoe outfitters, a map and a day itenerary for his trip. It is a nice read and will get you pumped for your trip.

This book offers a veritable wealth of information for hunters, campers, fishermen and others who spend recreation time in the outdoors. I've used it to identify types of fish, to know how to build a fire in the rain, and to prepare food for overnight hikes. I'd give it 5 stars if it hadn't suggested one thing I consider very poor judgement--using prairie dogs as targets for practice. As a hunter and fisherman, I NEVER would take even a prairie dog's life needlessly... try a few clay pigeons instead.

A book about a boy who has a dracula doll. The boy goes to camp one summer. One night he has a dream, when he wakes up that night he sees a shadow in the shape of his doll. That night he buries his doll. After he buries the doll strange things start to happen. He ignores all the stange things. A few weeks later he notices two of the camp advisors dressed in capes and ginger snaps. The camp advisors dress them up in capes and gingersnaps. In the end of the book they go and scare the other kids away. THE END

Must have for people with disabilities

Although this book is also useful for senior and families with young children, we use it to learn which areas in the national parks are accessible and were private vehicles are restricted. It also advises when special passes can be obtained.

Visitors to restricted areas of the parks must ride in busses, special provisions are often made for the disabled (usually requires a state diabled permit for your vehicle) allowing you to drive your private vehicle in these areas. This book gives you advance notice of when you need a special permit for this privilege. In some cases, the book has provided us with information that is not easily available from any other source. This makes the park much more accessible for the disabled.

The only reason this is not a 5 star book is that the book is 8 years old and does not cover the newer parks.

Based on the Bible ALONE and in it's entirety!

I met the author of this is over 15 years ago I think, while enroute to Bangkok Thailand. I am never easily fooled ... I will vouch that this man is the real deal, Now in his 80's and still quite vigorous, but the impressive thing is how devoted he is! Always attempting base ALL spiritual truth on the Bible ALONE and in it's entirety. I have found his books to be carefully written and very well researched but more than that they are so clearly written of a sincere desire that a reader might benefit greatly even to thier becoming convinced of their need for God's mercy and Christ as the only hope. Buy and this book! And lest you think the author would make a single dime on his books, I think if you contacted him at family radio he would give you a copy free if you can't afford it and I am serious! But if you buy it new, used or it is given to you, please be like the Bereans were when they were originally presented with the gospel ... don't believe anything or trust anything until you have prayerfully checked it against what the Bible says ... look up the Scripture refrences and see what rings true and what does not ... just don't trust your own ideas either! Let God be true and every man a liar is what the bible charges us with! May God richly bless you! Doug

Put your pride to the side, and listen to this book!

In the Bible, the book of Matthew chapter 24, Daniel, 1 Peter, and of course the book of Revelation sums things up very clearly. When the second coming will happen and how, and what to look out for: For instance we hear about how, "false prophets will rise up and deceive many",Matt. 24:7-11. Well we are seeing this everywhere in a lot, but not all, of the local churches. Proof? Like it or not, many pastors, though mean well, are taking scripture so terribly out of context. They don't do their homework in scripture comparison. God purposely wrote the Bible so it takes patience, humility, and love to read and more importantly understand. (I can write a book here, forgive me, but there's not enough room. So I'm trying to cut to the chase.) Falling down backwards is a serious NO-NO, yet it's everywhere. Speaking in tounges is a big time satanic tool, and it's duped nearly every congregation! The Bible is written, God gave us all we need to know in That ONE and ONLY book. No longer are we to get visions, and speak in tongues. Oh, you may, but it's not of God!! "Christian" rock, oh, Lord, don't get me started. Divorce rates even among the pastors! This never would of been allowed 30-40 years ago. Times may change, but God's law - the Bible- doesn't. There are no longer any morals in the congregations, no meat and potatoes in the pastor's Sunday message.
Rev. 13:7 -"authority was given over to him.."
Daniel 7:21 & 8:11-12 - "then the saints shall be given into his hand..he exalted himself as high as the Prince."
Don't believe me yet, or more importantly the Bible, what do you do with these three verses then?
1 Peter 4:17 -"time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God.."
Matthew 24:15 -"when you see the 'abomination of desolation' spoken of by Daniel...standing in THE HOLY PLACE.."
II Thes. 2:3-4 -"..man of sin sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God."
Who is standing in the Holy Place (Churches)? These above verses clearly show that the time was to come that God would give Satan victory over the churches!
Look, a lot of people don't like Family Radio or Harold Camping, I understand this. He's actually a very nice man, but his talk show, "Open Forum" he takes very seriously, and doesn't have a sense of humor on it. Matter-of-fact, he doesn't like people calling more than once a month. His 'tell-it-like-it-is" approach certainly hasn't won many people over, and I'm not saying I agree with everything he says. But if you're concerned about the direction of our churches, and if you're really wanting to make sure your children and family are getting a bible-based education, (and for Heaven's sake, I am not talking about "religion" here... religion DOES NOT save us or protect us from our sins..Jesus does. "Religion" has started more wars, trouble, etc.) you owe it to yourself, and your family, to order this book, and study it. Then come up with your own conclusion. Remember, when it comes down to it, in all seriousness - church, any kind at all, is a business. Business, is made up of people! So don't be surprised if you show this book to your pastor and he tells you to take a hike or feels threatened. And remember, "after death, comes the judgment," (book of Hebrews). Where will you be?

I hope amazon posts this, I believe it's good information on this book, and helpful too. Although, it may be too risky for them to, I don't know? But, if you don't, amazon, there's no hard feelings. Thanks

This book is a lot of fun to read, and I would recommend it to any kid who wants something that is exciting and mysterious. It brought back some memories of the time that I went camping, and it was really great to remember it. The story has a lot of twists and turns, and it keeps you on edge throughout the whole book while still having a really great and even cute storyline. If you are thinking about buying this book, you have made a good choice to do so, and hopefully you will decide to buy it! :) Hope this helps!

This book's title infers it is about nature walks, including pictures of nature trails and plants. Some of the reviews say it can be used for hikes. However, it is about CAMPING -- overnight.

Many of the ideas could be used without camping overnight. But I know it will feel to my children like we are not reading it start to finish, or not using it in the way it was intended.

For instance, it will say "Games... for CAMPING," "Food... when you're CAMPING," "Animals may share your CAMPSITE," "I like to pick up leaves... at our CAMPSITE."

I think the title should say CAMPING.

But if you are going camping, it is very nice :o)
