ISBN 0064402037 - Pete and Scott are going to camp out on a deserted island. Pete sees himself as a rugged explorer and imagines they'll be conquering the wilderness. It's a pity that their tent is a canvas replica of Hansel and Gretel's gingerbread house. But it'll be okay - it's a deserted island, no one will see them, right? The last thing he expected was to find two girls on their island! And the worst thing he could have imagined has happened... they have a camera.

Jill and Sunny are on the island with Jill's aunt Katherine, who is a photographer. They have a few great laughs at the expense of the boys, who set out to get revenge. One night, the boys discover another person on the island. Cornelius lives, during his summers, in a complex treehouse that he built and adds on to all the time. Cornelius is smitten with Katherine, but things go badly from the beginning. Turtle Island becomes the new site of the battle of the sexes. How will they get through their time on the island without killing each other?

Funny and lighthearted, This Island is a book both boys and girls will anjoy - and how rare is that? Choose this one for summer reading, for two reasons. Camping, of course. Then there's the Perseid meteor shower, which is mentioned in the book and peeks in mid-August. Sneak some education in!

This Island Isn't Big Enough For the Four of Us, written by Gery Geer is an exciting novel about two boys who go camping on Turtle Island. When they arrive they arrive they find out that two girls who are camping there too, later on the boys are embarrassing themselves when the girls are taking pictures. The main idea of the book is that the boys are trying to fool the girls. But the girls are too good. The boys cant fool them, and in the end, the boys and girls have a flag race to see who is the all time champion of Turtle Island at last. The author has a tie.

This book would be good for both boys and girls.

This Island Isn't Big Enough for the Four of Us is about the boys against the girls. The girls keep teasing the boys and the boys try to get them back but keep failing. One night the boys try to be sneaky and take down the girls tent. They thought the girls weren't around but the girls tricked them and cought the boys. They really scared them away. The boys were scared that the girls were going to see their little gingerbread tent. The girls ended up catching them and really laughed at them. The war between the boys and girls is hilarious. The boys are always trying to show off but the girls are always are always beating them. So the boys decide to put them to the ultimate test. They challenge the girls to race them up the hill. Then they have to grab the flag and race them back to the tree house. Who will win?

I got this book when I was 9 and I loved it immediately for its phantastic adventurous plot and twists. I think it is the best book I had as a child, making me laugh from the first page to the second last. It is so hilariously funny I still love to read it today - I'm 22 now and passing it on to my little niece. I know she will enjoy it as much as I did...

When Scott and his friend Pete think that they are going to a deserted island for five days they don't know whats in store for them. On the way to the island, Pete and Scott fall out of there canoe, they get laughed at by two girls. Scott and Pete know that they now have to get along on an island with two girls and find a way to get them back.

I liked this book because of all the pranks, jokes, and skrew ups that go on between the boys and girls. There is also a mystery on the island that Pete and Scott must find out. I reccomend this book to anyone who has a sence of humor and adventure.

My grandsons loves these books as well as the junie B jones books they are so full of funny little incidents and ideas. I think these books keep the childrens attention and give them a laugh. They also get involved with things they enjoy camping fishing school things they can relate to themselves.
Please Read to your Children or grandchildren it creates a special bond and my 8 yr old grandson is top reader in his class 3 years and I think it is where he and I always read books when he stays with me which is almost every week end and it has become one of our nitely rituals and now I am doing the same with a 4 year old and 20 months old.

It's off to the great outdoors for the always helpful Amelia Bedelia! She is going camping for the very first time in her life, and she will be sure to follow every bit of directions that she gets on what to do... So, if you are a fan of Amelia's wild antics, you will have lots to laugh about here.

Would it surprise you to know that sleeping bags are paper bags? They are in Amelia's mind! So you can just guess what comes up when you need stakes to pitch the tents.

I don't know who will love Amelia Bedelia Goes Camping more -- you or your kids! Highly recommended!

I bought this before our family went on its first camping trip. Although I thought the authors could have found many more "gags" than they did, it was still pretty much classic Amelia Bedelia, who takes everything VERY literally, with funny results.

So the rogers and amelia go on a camping trip but everything was a disaster! The sleeping 'bags' were paper bags, the tent steaks were tent-shaped steak slices, she 'pitched' the tent and other funny things.

Funny as always!

This book is nice for motivated older children (8 and up) to flip through on their own before a family camping trip. They can fold down the pages of things they'd like to try and really play a role in preparing for the adventure. Its also great for an organized parent who wants to have some rainy day plans, arts and crafts projects, or nature activities on hand. Just make sure to check the supply lists (all pretty basic) before you go on your trip. FYI, a lot of the projects are great for doing in the backyard, too. A nicely laid-out book with a nice tone.

Saw this book reviewed in Family Fun Magazine and it sounded good so I bought it. Turns out the review was true - this book is excellent and it's not just for kids. I really enjoyed reading it from cover to cover and learned a few things myself. This past weekend we brought it with us to Fool Hollow Lake State Park in Arizona. The campfire recipes are great. I loved the Banncock Bread. It was delicious! My daughter also enjoyed the ghost stories in the back of the book and we sang the songs (The Frogs Keep Hopping On) around the campfire. I recommend this book if you and/or your family are beginner campers and want a little inspiration and basic information about what to pack, how to pack and how to make the most of a rainy day in a tent.

Some parts of this book are quite interesting in its ideas for activities. All the games described are basically hide & seek while making animal sounds. the recipes are easy and fun for kids, the packing list and common sense tips are straightforward, easy for kids to follow or read. the songs and stories are typical, been there, done that, nothing new. Illustrations are quirky and cute.
reccomend for the 1st time camper or if you want to give your kids something to read before the trip.

Camp Out! is full of creative and informative lessons and fun activities. Truly a unique book. Any kid from video game addict to natural born scout will find this book engaging! it contains kid-level explanations without talking down to kid-level. As an adult I enjoyed reading this book and felt the cartoons weren't too cutesy. Good for both boys and girls.

Most of these songs shouldn't be sung at all, let alone by a campfire! There's only a couple worth singing, the rest of the book you can use for kindling! Sorry, but true.

I agree with other "raters" that the size of this book is great for camping, hiking, etc. It could fit into a traditionally sized pocket and you could easily find room for it in a back pack, etc. Each song also has notes, so that if you don't know the melody, you can pick it out on the piano. However, it is definately not a piano book, the notes are not arranged for that - just a simple one-handed tune. I was disappointed That most songs only have one verse and the chorus. Occasionally, a 2nd verse is included. But, I would like 4-5 verses for songs that have them.

This is a super little book for anyone wanting to sing old favorites from around the world at a campfire. The score for the melody is given along with guitar chords. Tabbing the melodies for harmonica was pretty easy and I'm very happy with the results.

This is what I expected - chock full of good old songs. Both the notes and chords are listed, which is great. And most of them use few chords, which is great for a beginner like me! The book is small in size, which is good, but that's also bad because it doesn't want to stay open - I use my capo to clip it open! Haven't used my capo much, so now I've found a good use for that, too.

If you are a complete dummy in camping and never spent a night outdoor, this book may be for you.
The information is too basic (don't put your tents near garbage containers for instance...) and if you have already been camping, even without being an expert, this book will bore you very quickly. Without talking of the numerous pictures of the author's family...

Excellent book for starters or the experienced

Camping Made Easy is an excellent manual for all of those who are interested in camping, but don't know how to get started. The author outlines practically every aspect of camping that you can think of, including: equipment (with great buying tips), types of camping spaces, cooking and food in various situations, backpacking, hiking, biking, canoeing, wildlife watching, and fishing. There is also lots of really great information about camping (and related activities) with your kids, something that I think most readers will appreciate. I can't think of any questions that you will have that will go unanswered with this book.

The author discusses the basic how-to's of each activity, gives great suggestions for figuring out what kind of equipment you do (and don't) need, offers some suggestions on howt to aquire equipment on a budget, and how to squeeze the most fun out of your trip. He even helps with organizational ideas for storing and caring for your equipment, including his own packing lists.

Experienced campers will find lots of neat tips for making camping life a little easier. For example; if you have ever struggled with a slippery sleeping pad under your bag, try applying some glue or tent sealant to the pad. After it dries, you will have instant traction!

I highly recommend Camping Made Easy. The book is highly useful, incredibly readable, and even funny at times as the author recounts his own experiences in the wild. If nothing else, the menus offered for camp eating will certainly stir a hunger!

Excellent reference for the beginning camper!

What a delightful book, multiple photos and illustrations, personal stories, and a wealth of experience! Book covers how to start out and some examples of layering good for Alaska and desert camping. Tents, tarps, sleeping bags (now I know waht the benefits of a mummy bag are but also why I've always hated them!) How to keep your gear stored to be able to be ready in a flash.

Packing lists, campsite information, good food, simple food, water purifiers, you name it. Sections on fishing and canoeing I skimmed over, but the emphasis on family fun and making things simple, rather than an endurance contest, makes this book a informative, easily readible resource.

I'm on my third time through, still picking up items I missed the first time - or that I wasn't experienced enough to need yet. If you're planning on camping with the family, or just looknig to make a solo trip more enjoyable, pick it up. It's like having a great friend to give you patient advice on making some good choices in camping.

I got this book when I decided to follow a my lifelong dream of seeing the country, and I didn't want to do it from a motel room. This book gave me all I needed to know to get started buying gear and how to survive my own cooking in the woods.
My only complaint is an editorial one: Has no one ever told this author about first and later references? Every single photo of his children and every reference is of "My son, Jon-Michael" or "My daughter, Abby." After the first time or two, I KNOW the childrens' names and who they are and could have stood not having the "My son or daughter" with every reference.
Just an annoyance - it really was a good book to get started camping.

I have read this book 15-20 times now and have continously enjoyed it each time. I would say the only misgiving I have is that some of the equipment the Mike recommends is no longer available.

This is a very broad book -- covering a number of topics from car camping to canoe camping. Since we have children, we appreciate the fact that the book is a family camping book!

Pick it up if you want good book to get you into camping.

This guide provided me with valuable info from the first use. The campground detail is quite thin, but it gives me a great starting place to locate potential inexpensive camping spots. From there it is usually easy to get more detail using other resources. To be clear, this book is not a good single source but a valuable component and the data is well organized.

We have had Don Wrights Guides to Campgrounds before, this being the newest edition. The Western edition covers all the areas that we are currently interested in with many many listings and choices for people that like to Boondock. A great resource!
The only reason I did not give this a 5 star rating is that it is a little hard to read the numbers on the maps and then relate them to "state" or "county" roads. The maps of each state only show the main roads, not the links from those main roads to the camping areas. You have to refer to an addition map to get more of the location of camping areas.

See also my review on NW rv destinations. I know the NW pretty well but am always looking for better and cheaper ways to travel around, hide out, and explore. For ecomony camping and rv'ing this is the book. A little cheaply done (newsprint type paper) this 440 pp reference guide is full of all the little hidey holes and cheaper places to hang out. Much more fine detail for this geographical area than say Trailer Life's RV Directory. Has complete information and prices on all the out of the way and mainline economical places to stay. Does not include commercial places like Wal-Mart, Cracker Barrel, etc. Very broad coverage (Entire Western US). While on you way to a destination park you can explore these out of the way and local money savers. Such camps usually don't have full hooks ups, but for ~ $12 or less who cares, you can boondock for a a night can't you -- maybe even a whole weekend!

Please clean up after your pets and keep them controlled. An increasing number of camps are not allowing pets due to owners' abuse of this privilege. Its not the dog's fault. Our Miniature Schauzer loves to RV and we love taking him, but are often dismayed by the number of parks that will not allow pets anymore.

Della is part of an outdoor club at school, along with Gary, Suki, Maia, Ricky and Pete. Maia is her friend and Gary is her ex-boyfriend. She broke up with him and regretted it the next day, but he didn't want to talk to her and now she really wants him back. Suki is a girl who is trying to be Gary's girlfriend and almost is. Ricky is the class clown. He thinks he is funny but he isn't. Pete is a semi-prep in the club. Gary is the leader. Their teacher is Mr. Abner. The group had been wanting to go on an overnight. They finally planned for that weekend. Mr. Abner came into class and said they had to cancel it because he had some family problems. They were all upset. Especially Maia, because she had to beg her parents to go in the first place. Then they thought about the idea of going without Mr. Abner. Maia said no because her parents would kill her if they ever found out. Della told her everything was going to be alright and she decided to go. They all decided to go at the originally planned time without Mr. Abner to camp at Fear Island, which was behind the Fear Street woods. When they got to camp they found a campsite and got everything ready. Then Ricky brought out his Zap guns (paintball guns). They started to play as teams, girls against boys, in the woods of the island. Della got lost and just kept walking hoping her sense of direction was helping her find her way back. She stopped when she got to a ravine. They're was a guy following her she turned around and shot a stream of paint from her Zap gun. There was no one there. Then she put the gun up. There was a guy that showed up. He started talking excitedly to Della. Della kind of liked him. He was 18 or so and very cute, he had a chin with three sculls on it around his neck. Then he started talking about communication and something about how he tried to communicate with an old man and how he wouldn't. Della started to get scared. Then he told her what he did to the old man. He said that he shot him in the back with a gun. Then he grabbed Della and started to try to throw her in to the ravine. She shot him with her Zap gun and he just laughed. Then she moved and accidentally pushed him into the ravine. She went down to the bottom to see if he was alright and he wasn't breathing. Then she saw the rests of the members of the outdoor club at the top of the ravine. She told them what happened. Gary checked the man's pulse and he had none. They were all upset. They had never seen a dead body before. They decided to keep it a secret to keep Della from getting in trouble and because their parents would find out that they went on the overnight without Mr. Abner. Della was so scared... She had just killed a man. They all had trouble sleeping that night. They left as soon as possible the next morning. When they got home they had trouble hiding the secret. Especially when their parents asked them how it went. Then when Della came home from going to Maia's house to calm here down, she found an envelope in her screen door. It had one of the sculls that the man had around his neck and a note that said, "I saw what you did". They had a meeting and Gary said he got a scull too. Then Pete showed them an article about two guys who killed an old man that was supposedly rich. Then they saw the sketches. One of them was of the man Della killed. That was the old man he couldn't communicate with. Then they realized that the guy sending them the stuff was probably the partner with the man and he either wanted revenge... or to blackmail their parents. The next day they had an outdoor club meeting at school. Mr. Abner was back. Mr. Abner was so excited because he had finally come back and planned the overnight at Fear Island for that weekend...

I liked The Overnight because the way the events took place captivated me. Also I can relate to some of the characters in the book. In the overnight six teenagers plan to go on an all night camp out, but the chaperone can't come. This sounds like a good idea at first but soon turns into a nightmare. With murder and suspence these teenagers lives will never be the same!

R.L. Stine, one of the greatest horror writers in history, is
out with another great thriller The Overnight part of the Fear
Street collection. The book is about five kids Della, Suki, Maia,
Gary and Ricky when they have plans to go to their outdoor club

I loved this book. It was one of the best I ever read!!!!!!!! This girl named kylie hates this guy named Ryan. He beats her in the president election becasue he made all these promises he couldn't keep. THen finally when Kylie gets away from school and goes on her Adventure Trails trip, she finds out that Ryan is there. But after she spends a little time with him she doesn't think he is annoying anymore. She even think she likes him. But will Ryan feel the same for her or will he go out with her best friend Stephanie. whose to know?

I really liked this one. And Kylie's character is so totally believable.

Kylie has just lost the election for class president to Ryan, whom she thinks is a total idiot and loser, and won't live up to the expectations of being class president. And she tells him so in his yearbook, as she writes him a really nasty note. Only she thinks about it when her hands her yearbook back with a nice note written in it. But not for long. The school year ends, and she is off to camp. SHe can't wait either. She meets Stephanie for the first time, a girl who she had been sharing emails with for the past few months, and she meets Dirk, whom she thinks is a total hottie..... and she meets Ryan. She can't believe it and thinks her summer is ruined. SO she is glad when Stephanie falls for Ryan (not hard though, just a crush flirty sort of way). Anyways, during the book, they both realize that they are totally into each other, and how not perfect Kylie and Dirk would be together. And Wes, the counselor sees it before anyone else does.
I really like this book. Stephanie is a true friend. SHe's the one who tells Kylie that in her heart, she knows that Kylie is in love with Ryan, and even thought she had the hots for him first, she really supports Kylie into getting her guy. In the end of the story, Ryan is really romantic and protects her. Well just read the book and you'll realize why I liked it too. I would have liked it better though if Dirk and Stephanie had hooked up cause they would have been good together.

This teen romance was the best ever. Even ifyou don't like teen romances, you will after reading this. The two characters absolutley hate each other, and their personalities are totally realistic. I think that this romance novel was truly awesome. You definitly won't be able to put it down.

Speaking as a 27-year-old male, I found Julie Taylor's Falling For Ryan to be a fun-filled, well-crafted thrill ride through the girls' restrooms and overnight camping trips of the teen romance genre. The opening of this 30th installment in the Love Stories series puts the reader in the middle of the action, as the blond sixteen-year old heroine, Kylie, laments her just-that-minute loss to Ryan Barron in the Senior Class President election (by only 50 votes!) The excitement builds and the reader finds himself/herself perched on the cusp of a temporal transition: as one major event ends (the election and junior year, both of which signify months of significant trials and challenges) another (summer break and the upcoming 18-day Adventure Trails trip) is just beginning.

The transitional-action dramatic structure is an especially apt metaphor to employ for a novel set in the teen years, a period of life (if I remember correctly) when girls and guys face transitions at every turn: from junior year to senior year, from senior year to college, and eventually, off in the distance, there lurks the supposedly final transition, post-matriculation, into young adults.

This ultimate transition, or right of passage, is represented in Falling For Ryan by Wes, the 28 year-old Adventure Trails guide and college graduate in Environmental Studies; a character whose "otherness," (determined by his advanced years) is spotlighted with Kylie's declaration: "he would be cute if he was 10 years younger." This is the character I suppose I should relate to, since I am 10 years senior to every other character in the book, but it is hard to say because none of the other males have been assigned personalities.

Rather, the teen men are presented as types--stock, one-trait characters for the teen women to interact with as a means to explore their thoughts and feelings and "crushes." This technique is similar to the stock gender development found in young men's literature, comic books and so forth, where the women are generally represented as beautiful objects to be rescued or fought over. Stock genderizing is a time-honored technique dating back to the dramatists of Shakespeare's period and before, and it is used to great effect in Falling For Ryan.

We learn, for instance, a lot about Kylie through the way she reacts to Ryan's perpetual smirk and constant tone of blustering sarcasm. In one instance she tells Ryan off, publicly, with the point-blank remark "With friends like you, who needs enemies." The speechless stare she receives from Ryan and the "oohs and aahs" emanating from the class are well deserved. Kylie is a witty and assertive young lady, and we can thank the author for setting up a stock foil like Ryan to demonstrate those qualities. The other men in the story are also stock types, from Dennis the chivalrous Texan and competitor for Kylie's affections, to Taylor, the freckled Brawny-paper-towel-lumberjack-looking guy. By bouncing her various comments and colorful personality against these men and witnessing their predictable answers, Kylie is able to show us just what she is capable of, which is quite a lot!

Yet it is to the author's credit that even with half the story's characters stock typed, she is still able to leave the door open for some rich and complex plot twists. Subtle hints, like Ryan's supposed interest in photography, his skill with making blueberry/banana pancakes, and even the "nice" note he writes in Kylie's yearbook way back in Chapter one, hint that just maybe the stock typed Ryan holds the promise to transform himself, much like in the ending of the classic Pinocchio tale, into the three-dimensional character that our assertive, sensitive, and utterly likeable heroine deserves. I won't give away the ending, but suffice it to say that Falling For Ryan is as aptly titled as it is beautifully constructed.

I got this for my 16 year old son. We recently moved from town to a very rural area, and he's been complaining there's nothing to do...so I got him this book and a tool kit. There's a lot of neat stuff to build, and useful survival information. I recommend this for older boys, and "Dangerous Book for Boys" for the younger set.

A fun read. Informative. Have been an outdoorsman for 40 years and I learned some new skills from this book.

Content is aimed primarily at youth of years-gone-by... I smiled plenty of times while reading it.
