This book focuses on the special needs of camping in cold weather. It has up to date and accurate information.

Includes life saving information on staying warm and hypothermia, packing, and clothing selection. Also information you need to know about special steps to take with food, water, sanitation, first aid, sleep systems, shelter, emergencies, and training for cold-weather camping. And to save you money it has info on how to make your own equipment. Very good little book. Published by the Boy Scouts of America so this information is put to the test every winter.

Part guide book, part scavenger hunt, and part story book
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-12
Learning resource for the home library of nature lovers. This is a simple story of a short trip through the woods, to the salt marsh, to the dunes, and finally to the beach. Along the way readers are given a scavenger hunt like list of animals, plants, and natural objects to find in each fold-out, three-page spread. The artwork is detailed like that of a guide book, but also set within context. The last page has the answers with all the species identified. Karen Woodworth-Roman, Children's Science Book Review

The wisdom of the ages

Townsend Whelen in this book passes on the wisdom of the people who learned the artform of surviving in the wilderness from the Indians and hard knocks.
It is a book which you probably will have to re read time and again to soak in what he is plainly saying. It is amazing that the same things that kept people alive in the wilds 100 years ago...have not been improved upon to this day.
His writing is simple and to the point. I have not regretted buying this book and still find myself returning to it...and finding that Whelen already said it 50 years ago.

From a true pioneer outdoorsman...I love Calvin's tales interspersed in his readings with some opinions tossed about about politics, economics, and the state of his future and now, our past...Just very well written from an original. His stories that he chats about in between are short and enjoyable. I love his work.

Adventure for the entire family!!

Review Date: 2007-09-19
One Last Chance is a great adventure story for the entire family. Two 14 year old boys - Seth and Travis - venture out in October in a last of the season canoeing trip in the boundary waters of Northern Minnesota. They had no idea what an 'adventure' this would turn out to be especially when Mother Nature adds her own bit of spice to it. You will enjoy how the boys deal with the problems they are thrown and how they work to overcome them. A great adventure story that should be read by all and especially those young adult readers in the family.

functional and beautiful knife

Review Date: 2008-05-17
I have the partially serrated version of this knife (943SBK), but I wish I had gotten the plain blade, since I find it more functional and nicer looking.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this knife and have only good things to say.

What you can't see in the picture is:
-it has a nice blue ridged section between the left and right sides of the handles, which is just eye candy, and it's awesome because this is what is visible when the knife is clipped in your pocket. This is what they call the "Blue Anodized Spacer".
-the clip is "tip up". Meaning that when you carry this knife in your pocket (in the closed position) with it clipped to your pocket, the tip will be pointing up.
-the clip can be moved to the other side to be worn in the left pocket (but it will still be "tip up").
-the handle material is very light (aircraft aluminum), which is nice.
-the blade is s30v which is a very high quality steel, and it sharpens really well, so: (with some easy maintenance), it will stay sharp forever.

My kids are addicted!

We checked this out from the library. I actually chose it for the illustrating style, and the 'comic strip' style of telling the story. My 5 year old loves comics.
My 3 year old looked at it in the car the whole way home, and proceded to ask me to read it numerous times. My 5 year old (who can read) has read it over and over. They both crack up at the last page of the book.
My 5 year old asked if Rae & Otis are from a show. I don't know, but if their reaction is any indication..maybe it should be!
It's obviously addicting, and a very cute read.

This book has all the organizational skills to get you through starting the camp to the end of summer party! If you are a mom, teacher or counselor this book has great art, science, recipes, music, games, and more for children ages 2-7. Our program has been very succesful! Enjoy your children! They are only young a short time.

Henry has done it with this book!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-30

Henry Miller is the outdoor writer for my hometown newspaper, the Salem, Oregon, Statesman Journal. His columns are invariably well-written, humorous, and reflect an in-depth knowledge of his subject matter. His favorite subject is fishing.

This book is a collection of some of Henry's primo columns, and is certainly worth the price. It is a dandy little book.

I recommend it, and Henry, to you.
