A great companion book...

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Nyerges's book is weak on its photos and plant identification but is excellent as a companion book to all those boring plant ID texts. His book provides excellent background and practical information from someone who has actually used these plants. While geared for California, many of the plants are found across the U.S. especially in the West.

A good basic starting point, especially for first time campers. The inclusion of a flashlight and whistle with the book is a great idea, as we train to carry a whistle and light in their pocket 24 hours a day in the woods. The book starts with the most essential information of all, what gear do I need to buy and what do I pack. It covers the selection of how to dress, food preparation, hiking safety, wild animals, and other solid information. Good safety stuff here, camping can get dangerous after all.

Spiral-bound to wrap its front cover around and lay flat for easy reference, The Happy Camper's Cookbook: Eating Well Is Portable is a collection of recipes and cooking tips ideal for anyone on the go, whether camping, living in an RV, or just trying to scrounge up dinner when there's "nothing" in the house. Recipes range from a versatile "Country Pork Rub" ideal for use on meat to be cooked in the smoker, to "Cajun Stir Fried Rice Dinner", side dishes like "Maggie's Green Beans", "Chili Torta" (the perfect way to use up leftover chili), "Pink Salad", and much more. The tips and tricks range from how to effectively reheat food to how to turn cabbage soup into a hearty supper. An easy-to-use recipe guide especially recommended for anyone short on kitchen or refrigerator space who tends to run aground of too many leftovers!

I might not camp out a lot, but I do love my barbeque! And this book satisfies that, with delicious recipes you can make on an indoor electric grill or on your deck. Even better, you don't need a grill for the side dishes, salads and dressings and desserts. I love the cornbread recipe and the Rocky Road Fudge is to die for! Easy to read. Binding lays flat so the pages don't turn while you cook. It's become a staple in our house.

The author, Kevin Callan, sure has a great sense of knowledge of the outdoors (and uses his great sense of humor to guide you through this book!) I own several books on backpacking and the outdoors, and this is hands-down one of my favorites. It has a great layout with highlighted sections including smart tips, AND funny pictures of the author and his friends demonstrating how to.....(or, how NOT to) survive in the wild!!! But overall, I found this book to be very useful and informative. And I enjoyed it's most valued lesson...It's okay to LAUGH while you LEARN! A+

A Fabulous Find -- Great Sports Info for Boys, a Great Nostalgia Piece for Grownups
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-27
"Healthful Sports for Boys" is definitely in the same "ballpark" (ha ha, pun intended) as the better know Iggulden brothers' "The Dangerous Book for Boys," and should appeal to anyone who collects (or just loves) old boys books full of cool activities, useful information and good, old fashioned nostalgia for the boyhood of a bygone era. "Healthful Sports for Boys" was first published in 1910, and focuses, not surprisingly, on sports, which to my mind makes it more useful and interesting than "The Dangerous Book," which contains a lot of filler material about the history of ancient battles and such. There are clear instructions here for playing baseball and football, as well as "forgotten" team sports like "cat" and "townball." There are rules for a variety of games involving marbles, tops, etc., and directions for making and flying several styles of kites. In the arena of outdoor sports, camping, fishing, boating, canoeing, swimming, bicycling, golf, and winter sports like ice skating and sledding are all explored. There are even a bunch of easy sleight of hand magic tricks. Buried in the straightforward discussion of various sports, the author inserts moral guidance as well, with admonitions to stand up for smaller kids and to put bullies in their place, to play fair, tell the truth, etc. In the last couple of years I have put together a pretty good collection of old Boy Scout manuals and other books published for boys in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, and this reprint edition of "Healthful Sports for Boys" fits right in, as one of the best. I highly recommend it. Another great boy's book I discovered from this same publisher (Better Days Books) is YOU CAN BE A GREAT AMERICAN!: 39 Steps to True and Lasting Greatness: A Growing Up Great Guide for American Boys And for the Parents and Teachers Who Love Them. Check that one out, too!

Hide-and-Seek Camping Trip is a interactive children's book. The main characters in the story were Ernie and Bert from the well-loved children's show "Sesame Street". They go on their adventure through the woods. The book is fully furnished with peek holes that bring you to the next page. On one page it's a tree and on the next it's the horns of a deer. It's an easy reading story that your children will love and enjoy!

My son, who is 8, is obsessed with reference guides and natural history. He also likes human stories behind history. He loved this book. I definitely recommend it for a child who wants to know more about Everest.

Shipping was quick, which is great when you have a son who keeps saying, "When will my book be here?"

Written by Bulletin Blue Ribbon Book author John Frank, How To Catch a Fish is a unique children's picturebook offering thirteen different poems about fishing under different conditions worldwide. The soft, slightly abstract yet vividly evocative illustrations by Christopher Medal-winning artist Peter Sylvada perfectly complement the primal rhythm of the verses. For example, the poem that describes seine fishing in Turtle Bay, Tobago reads, "Within the early hours of day / we launch our small boat from the beach / and spread our net out on the bay, / then shortly after drag it back / upon the shore, and sort the catch- / anchovy, tuna, kingfish, jack- / and if we're lucky there'll be lots / to fill the village supper pots." A read-aloud treat to share between parents and children who love the sport and art of fishing.
