I read the book Doug Funny's Family Vacation. It was really neat!!!! The funniest part was when Doug and Judy were practically afraid of each other because they got really mad at each other and did weird things. When they had the baby and went to take a picnic Doug got afraid to go in the woods and after all it was o.k. they were acting weird on their trip! ButI still thought it was funny and a good book to read!!!

Tilton & Bennett have produced a very good text for Mountaineers Books. Every out-door lover, wilderness hiker and mountain back packer should read "Don't Get Sick".

Through nine absorbing chapters they inform about all the various diseases (from staph to lyme disease to bubonic plague) one may contract from living out doors. The book is small and will fit into a pocket (take it with you for reference on your next trek). T & B's comfortable, and non technical, writing style allowed me to read all 108 pages in just one week of the National Scout Jamboree.

T & B identify many diseases, suggests cures, define periods for illness, and discuss how to shield one from sickness. They offers explanation about the four microbes that make us sick: viruses, bacteria, fungi and yeast, and protozoa. They also highlight their prevention and cures. More than a dozen graphs and tables illustrate healthy ways to avoid wilderness illness and how to set up a germ free living space. T & B also provide a helpful reference section, for each chapter, at the end of the book (demonstrating their state of the art research).

With 20+ years of wilderness hiking and pack backing experience I was delighted to learn more from T & B. For example, tetanus lives in the soil (just another reason not to go bare footed in unfamiliar environments), on page 23. And sixty-six percent of all raw poultry contains salmonella (cook it thoroughly), page 62.

This book is recommended to all who spend time hiking, eating, and sleeping in the wilderness. If you enjoy the outdoors, T & B will help you love it more with good health.

Hard to find but EXACTLY what you are looking for

I have been looking on both Amazon and in bookstores for a comprehensive guide to camping in Nevada, Utah and Arizona (I live in Southern Nevada). Not only are there no great websites, but every book I have seen is either out of date or the series does not cover this area! Thankfully someone told me of this book (it NEVER came up on Amazon searches for camping in these states since the names are not directly in the title). The book is amazing and worth every penny. It covers everything you need to know and athough there are no pictures - I don't care. Now that I know the names of the campgrounds I am interested in, I can get pictures on-line. I would rather have the 100's of up-to-date extensive listings! Thank you so much for publishing this book!!!

Terrific book if you want to know where to camp with kids

My daughters turned 6 & 8 this summer and we decided it was time to head out and see some of the great outdoors. I chose this book because I needed 'Easy Camping' given my daughters' ages. I'd also read another book by Tom Stienstra and enjoyed his style of writing.

Anyway, we've tried 2 of Tom's recommended excursions and they've both been absolutely amazing (Castle Rock Trail Camp and Pan Toll at Mt. Tamalpais). Although the book is called `Easy Camping' that doesn't mean camping in a parking lot! My challenge was finding places that were a far enough walk that you'd feel like you were "out there" whilst not being too far for young children (my daughters can't hike more than about 3 miles with their backpacks). This book is right on the money in this respect.

I don't know about you but I often feel let down when I read guide books full of glowing recommendations only to visit a place and find it ain't that great. This doesn't happen with Tom Stienstra, what he describes is what you get. The book is well laid out with just the right balance of descriptive writing and details for planning a trip. I do recommend you call the sites before you visit however because his info on reservations, pricing, etc. is a little out of date.

Owning this book is like having your own personal guide to the best that Northern California has to offer for weekend/overnight camping with young children. Do yourself a favor - get this book and get out this weekend

The best book on backpacking.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

I have many books on backpacking, this one is the shortest and the most useful. This book gets right to the point and is chock full of information, while it seems other books say a lot of things such as "find out what poison ivy looks like" or "learn how to use a compass" this book actually gives you the information. It also has great (b&w) pictures which are relevant and helpful. Whether you are planning a dayhike or something much longer this book will be a valuable resource, I think it's the best of them all!

A sure way to keep the campsite on each side of you vacant: Place a tuba in the middle of the picnic table.

It gets better! Get it, borrow it, steal it, buy it, you have to read it!

Fishing In A Brook: Angling Activities For Kids is the latest in a the Gibbs Smith series of activity books for children ages six and up. Author Lawson Drinkard shows kids how to make a pole; catch bait; cast a line; make a tackle box; fill the tackle box with bobbers, sinkers, poppers, spoons, and jigs. Fishing In A Brook also covers the different kinds of fish kids could catch and what to do with them once they have them caught. Engagingly illustrated by Fran Lee, there's a wealth of fun fish facts and activities like "A Slimy Worm Safari" to help any youngster become an expert fisherman whether by a brook, on a bayou, off a pier, on a bay, lake, stream or river! Other highly recommended titles in this outstanding activity book series include: Cooking On A Stick: Campfire Recipes For Kids; Sleeping In A Sack: Camping Activities For Kids; Trekking On A Trail: Hiking Adventures For Kids; and Hiding In A Fort: Backyard Retreats For Kids.
