Setting - this story takes place in the woods of Wisconsin during the winter. Character - the main character is Hobie Hanson. At the beginning Hobie is shy, very organized and doesn't know how to have fun. At the end he has learned how to have fun and not be so shy. Summary - Class 4B earned a trip to Outdoor Ed where Hobie got homesick. He tried to call his parents late one night, but bumped into Miss Ivanavitch in the dark. She told him he couldn't call because his father was in the hospital. Hobie stays and changes his attitude and turns out to have a great time! At the end he had fun because he tried new things and wasn't so shy. A fourth grader at Springdale Elementary

Paul is a knowledgeable hiker, passionate outdoorsman and entertaining writer. His attention to detail, whether giving driving directions or adding tidbits of historical interest to a certain location, make this a useful book both on and off the trail. In this, the third edition, Paul has fine tuned the content of the previous two editions, adding new hikes hitherto un-popularized in other hiking books, making this the most complete and best edition yet. This is not a book based on hearsay and bookish research; Paul has actually hiked, many times, all the locations profiled. Paul's treatment of the material is so thorough that I was able to use some of his research in the writing of my own book about fishing Oregon. Paul's new book on the day hikes on the Pacific Crest Trail is a great companion book. Thanks for the great work, Paul.

THE EVERGLADES......SAVE WHAT IS LEFT......GET INVOLVED!
EARLY EVERGLADES
Canoeing the Miami River on a Sunday morning, 1896: "The Sun was just rising, and a pleasant, cool breeze ruffled the surface of the river. Brewer with his pole in the stern, and myself with the Canadian paddle in the bow, made rapid headway against the current, which was getting stronger and stronger. The river winds in beautiful curves, the trees growing to the water's edge, and were it not for the occasional cocoanut-tree or cabbage-palm, you would almost believe you were in the wild streams of the Maine woods. Very soon we saw large white objects ahead, which proved to be balls of foam hurrying down with the current. With a quick turn to the left, after about three miles of paddling, we struck the South Fork, the water becoming swifter and swifter, and the cotton-like balls larger and more numerous. We were on the falls, and how the water did run! I could hear Brewer panting behind me, but I never turned my head or gave any signal that we were conquered, but started in on my old-time stroke, inch by inch crawling up that water, digging the rocks. After about three-quarters of an hour of the hardest paddling I think I have ever done, the water slowed up a little, and we could get some speed on the canoe. The trees opened up more, the stream becoming narrower and narrower, until we came to an opening where everything was clear ahead.
This was the edge of the Everglades, and the place for which the Indians make when bound to the coast by way of the Miami River. The stream here loses itself among the lily pads and before you lies a sea of apparently pathless grass. On closer observation shallow watercourses are seen running through the grass, cutting in all directions, spreading out like the lines on the human hands, and whichever one you take you regret that you did not choose the other."
The previous passage is Hugh Willoughby's account of his outing, one hundred years ago, on the Miami River, accompanied by his wife, son and wilderness-man and friend Ed Brewer. One year later he and Brewer would embark on their major Everglades excursion. In his book Across the Everglades, A Canoe Journey of Exploration, Hugh Willoughby has left us a fascinating and informative account of the early, undeveloped Everglades.
In this book you will find out how clean Everglades waters were. He and Brewer drank profusely of the waters. They just dipped a glass into it and guzzled the water. You can't do that today.
Get involved to save what is left of the Everglades now!
Reading this book will give you an idea of what the glades were like back when Miami was a village of 2000 people!

An extremly interesting book. Camping has done an excellent job of showing the correlation between the Bible and secular history. Many Bible passages are shown to give us a definate pathway to the beginning of time, a task no one else has seemed to do accurately. Most Christians have followed Archbishop Usher's timeline, but his dates just don't make sense. Camping shows us a fresh and very Biblical way to determining the timeline of our existance. A must read for anyone interested in history, creation and even evolution.

This is an excellent book for would be adventure travellers to start with. It has all kinds of excellent information on all aspects of "adventure travel", including travel logistics, cultural sensibilities(ie. how not to be an "obnoxious tourist"), health issues, what gear to bring, and how to plan your budget. The information does tend to be a bit general, but that is the intention to begin with. Once you decide on a location, you will definitely want to study up with more specific sources.

Part of the Appalachian Mountain Club's White Mountain Trail Maps series, this particular map covers the Presidential Range in northern New Hampshire. One side of the map displays the area south of Route 2, including the Great Gulf, Mts Madison through Washington, and the area south and east of Mt. Jackson. An inset provides detail on the plateau around the top of Mt. Washington. The back of the map provides a close-up look at the northern Presidentials, including the myriad of trails that run down from the ridge between Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Madison down to Route 2.
The map is printed in color at 1:42240 scale for the large map and at 1:20000 or better for the two insets. The map sheet is waterproof, tear-resistant, and just the right size to be stuffed into a pocket or rucksack. The detail is excellent, including distances on major trail segements. This map is intended to be used with the detail trail descriptions in the AMC White Mountain Guide 28th edition.
This map is absolutely essential to safe and purposeful hiking in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, where weathers conditions can take away visibility and reduce hikers to careful route-finding by map and compass. It is very highly recommended to hikes and other visitors to the Presidential Range.

The maps at the back of the book show all the campgrounds that are covered by the book but the map isn't very detailed but they're better than only having a list of campgrounds and not knowing where they might be in the country. You should have a road atlas or GPS to get accurate locations.
