Wonderful reading for new moms who feel like giving upReview Date: 2008-04-08
I liked that it was relatable and told it like it is, no sugar-coating. Being a mom is the hardest job I've ever had but, this book has helped make me a better mom.
Love this book!Review Date: 2005-06-10
It also covers how we as moms can learn to accept ourselves for who we are - not who we think we should be - i.e. Supermom. It's very God focused but not in a preachy way. Trust me, this is coming from someone who loves the movie "Dogma" and who has not gone to church for the majority of her life. It's just a real life book with real life examples of how to use the power of God's love to change your relationship with you children, your spouse (if you have one), yourself and maybe even a little bit with God.
I can't recommend this book enough!
Mom...and Loving It!Review Date: 2007-03-23

Debut novel breaks new ground in adolescent literatureReview Date: 2003-02-04
The book steers between the Scylla and Charybdis that causes so much adolescent literature to run aground. The kids are neither angelic parodies of real children nor excessively worldly-wise "young adults" who know everything there is to know about the streets, drugs, sex and music. The kids' issues and concerns are real and representative, allowing kids to reflect and make judgments about how they would respond in similar situations. At the same time, adult readers with children of similar ages are afforded a glimpse into that peculiar form of rationality that drives the actions of ten-year olds.
Another aspect of the book I enjoyed very much is Mr. Robinson's complete rejection of gender and racial stereotypes. Scooter's Dad is the acquisitive "shopping mutant;" his mother is the voice of reason, fiscal restraint and prudent saving. Faith, Scooter's ten year girl cousin and best friend, is a Tae Kwan Do expert that can beat up Scooter or any of his male friends, if she chooses.
The characters are also culturally and historically aware African-Americans, thoroughly middle class with thoroughly middle-class concerns. One comes away thinking that middle-class morality -- with its blemishes -- is not so bad after all. Bravo, Mr. Robinson-- and may there be many more Scooter novellas to come.
Scooter should be here to stayReview Date: 2003-01-20
Wonderfully written, Scooter comes to life throughout the book. We can all relate to that fateful day when our parents told us that we would have to save and get whatever we wanted right then, for ourselves. As an adult reading this book, I wanted to say to the father, a compulsive spender, go ahead, he's working so hard for it but I know that attitude wouldn't teach Scooter anything. As an adult remembering back to childhood, I know that my mom was right, I would appreciate it more if I worked for it. This is an excellent book for teaching the value of money with a theme that children can relate to today.
The characters are well developed, easily understood and multi-dimensional. This is a refreshing read for children as well as adults. This is a story with down to earth morals and common sense. Mr. Robinson, the author, should continue writing children's books for his first entry deserves a follow up. I would suggest continuing with Scooter as the main character in a theme series. Scooter will stick with me for a little while and I'd be interested in reading any of his further adventures.

A vibrant insight into a fascinating British led sub-cultureReview Date: 1999-08-29
A well written balance of social history and anecdotal recollections supported by a mix of revealing pictures.
For those who were there it brings back memories of a golden age. For those who weren't this well written and witty book gives a colourful insight into what they have missed.
This was a wonderful and compelling read that had to be returned to again and again. Definately one for the bookshelf.

Vol. 2 is Out NowReview Date: 2005-05-07
Saving the rainforest is great, but let's save what's here too. First we have to find out what IS here. This encyclopedia does that. All the uses for all the plants - Texas & the South.
A must have!Review Date: 1999-11-28
Extremely in depth coverage of plants from Abronia spp. to Arundo spp. is given, including all manners of uses from culinary to utilitarian. (Other genuses are to be covered in future volumes.) The book is full of wonderful color photographs of all the plants covered - usually several per plant. There are wide margins listing the various uses of the plants (pointing out their discussion in the text), location diagrams of where the plants are found and more.
Although the book covers only the areas described in the title, anyone with more than a fleeting interest in useful plants is sure to appreciate this book - no matter where they might reside.
The book is steeply priced for sure, but once you open it you will understand why. It is extremely well researched, a fact that is very evident throughout the text. Also, as mentioned above, the book abounds with gorgeous color photographs. Had the book not been a gift, I would have gladly paid twice the price for it.
The next volume(s) couldn't come fast enough for me. I am beginning to get a bit worried though as to the future of the series since I obtained my copy in 1996 and haven't heard anything on newer volumes... Even if this is the only volume that comes out it is still definitely worth the purchase.
Congratulations on a wonderful book to Scooter Cheatham and Marshall C. Johnston.
--> Update: The second volume did come out! If you can believe it, it's even better than this one! :D
