My son is 3 and loves the Caillou series on TV. I bought him a few CAillou books recently and this one by far is his favorite. The stickers add fun, the pics are interesting and it's not too long a story. And everyone can relate to birthdays.

Very cute and colorful book.

It is hard to find a book my son likes. This is one of them. He loves Calliou, and the pictures on this book catch his eyes. Story about CAKE and PRESENT does the trick too. Stickers are plus.

I like all the Caillou books. They are wordy but you can skip some of the sentences if your toddler is too young and wants to read more books before bedtime. This is a book you can use for a few years at least.

I was fortunate to happen upon this book--my 21 month old son loves it and asks for it by name every night. It's has the kind of story that keeps kids engaged, and has a fun ending that even parents will enjoy. The rhyming text makes it great fun for kids to complete sentences as we go. Plus, there is the added feature of there being a small duck bystander on nearly every page, which is great fun for children this age to find, over and over...

Great Fun for All Ages

My daughters are 6 years old and, we just discovered these books. They absolutely love them and, so do I. These are fun and original - they make reading fun for everyone. Thanks to the authors and illustrators. The pictures are adorable, too. It's hard to find books with great stories and pictures but, these have it. Thanks again. We hope to get the entire series.

Wonderful reading for new moms who feel like giving up

I thoroughly enjoyed Mom And Loving It. It was very inspiring and extremely helpful. It was chosen for a Christian playdate meeting I belong to and I will use it for a growth group meeting at my church. I liked it so much that I bought several copies and gave them to my sister and other friends who are moms.
I liked that it was relatable and told it like it is, no sugar-coating. Being a mom is the hardest job I've ever had but, this book has helped make me a better mom.

Love this book!

If you're a mom (single or with a spouse) and you are tired of yelling at your kids CONTINUOUSLY, feeling resentful of the time they take, feeling guilty for feeling or doing either of the former, feeling guilty for working out of the home, or for even if your working in the home, this book is for you! I picked it up on a whim an it has truly been a Godsend. This book is full of REAL LIFE examples of the things we moms (including the authors) do to our families that can really hurt our relationship with them. I'm not talking about mental or physical abuse - though this book does help with that a little. I'm talking about when you've yelled at your kids for the 82th time to close the cupboard door or to pick up their toys or listen to the whining about how "IT'S NOT FAIR!" day after day after day. This book can really help a mom cope with these daily issues.

It also covers how we as moms can learn to accept ourselves for who we are - not who we think we should be - i.e. Supermom. It's very God focused but not in a preachy way. Trust me, this is coming from someone who loves the movie "Dogma" and who has not gone to church for the majority of her life. It's just a real life book with real life examples of how to use the power of God's love to change your relationship with you children, your spouse (if you have one), yourself and maybe even a little bit with God.

I can't recommend this book enough!

I used this book for a bi-weekly mothers group, and it has been a big hit. The writers are down to earth, and realistic ladies who understand what it is like to be a christian mother in today's society. They bring scripture into every chapter, and have wonderful words of wisdom for moms with children of all ages. It can be used for large or small groups, studying 1 or 2 chapters each meeting. The words in this book, and the discussions that come from the topics, are extremely motivating to our group.

Debut novel breaks new ground in adolescent literature
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-04
I enjoyed Mr. Robinson's debut novel immensely and hope that it will attract a wide readership. The book's portrayal of the character, interests and concerns of its adolescent protagonists -- Scooter Browne and his cousin Faith -- as they go about solving the quotidian problems of daily life and relationships (both with peers and adults) is well-nuanced and unflinchingly realistic. The book is a fun read, and each chapter leaves you wondering what scheme Scooter will hatch next: will he be able to persuade his folks, against all odds, to buy him the latest video game or will he find a way to earn the cash to pay for the game himself?

The book steers between the Scylla and Charybdis that causes so much adolescent literature to run aground. The kids are neither angelic parodies of real children nor excessively worldly-wise "young adults" who know everything there is to know about the streets, drugs, sex and music. The kids' issues and concerns are real and representative, allowing kids to reflect and make judgments about how they would respond in similar situations. At the same time, adult readers with children of similar ages are afforded a glimpse into that peculiar form of rationality that drives the actions of ten-year olds.

Another aspect of the book I enjoyed very much is Mr. Robinson's complete rejection of gender and racial stereotypes. Scooter's Dad is the acquisitive "shopping mutant;" his mother is the voice of reason, fiscal restraint and prudent saving. Faith, Scooter's ten year girl cousin and best friend, is a Tae Kwan Do expert that can beat up Scooter or any of his male friends, if she chooses.

The characters are also culturally and historically aware African-Americans, thoroughly middle class with thoroughly middle-class concerns. One comes away thinking that middle-class morality -- with its blemishes -- is not so bad after all. Bravo, Mr. Robinson-- and may there be many more Scooter novellas to come.

Scooter should be here to stay

Scooter is a 10 year old with a problem. The latest greatest video game is about to burst on the scene and he just has to have it. One big thing is stopping Scooter from achieving his goal... money. The game costs an astonishing amount of money and his allowance doesn't cover the cost, further compounded by the horror of horrors to all children. His mom and dad have decided at this critical moment, to make scooter accountable. His mother said that she would buy him nothing else until his birthday so if there is any hope of getting this game on its first day of issue, Scooter will have to buy it himself. Scooter and the Galactic Starship is a charming book that details the adventure that Scooter goes on to get this game.

Wonderfully written, Scooter comes to life throughout the book. We can all relate to that fateful day when our parents told us that we would have to save and get whatever we wanted right then, for ourselves. As an adult reading this book, I wanted to say to the father, a compulsive spender, go ahead, he's working so hard for it but I know that attitude wouldn't teach Scooter anything. As an adult remembering back to childhood, I know that my mom was right, I would appreciate it more if I worked for it. This is an excellent book for teaching the value of money with a theme that children can relate to today.

The characters are well developed, easily understood and multi-dimensional. This is a refreshing read for children as well as adults. This is a story with down to earth morals and common sense. Mr. Robinson, the author, should continue writing children's books for his first entry deserves a follow up. I would suggest continuing with Scooter as the main character in a theme series. Scooter will stick with me for a little while and I'd be interested in reading any of his further adventures.

Like OddScoots? You know, the ones that vintage Vespa and Lambretta owners don't even recognise? This book will help you identify those oddities. It's not a repair guide, buyers guide, or how to book, it's a Spotter's Guide. The information about these scoots is scarce, and where a lot of info exists, they have it here, but if the odd scoot you're looking is one of the oddest, there won't be much info, but something is better than nothing, and without this book and one or two others, that's what you'd have. Add it to your collection and quitcherbitchin.

Whether new to the scene or an ardent follower, Scooter Boys captures the essence of a generation. Scooter Boys gives you the flavours of an era where scooters surpassed a mode of transport and became a way of life.

A well written balance of social history and anecdotal recollections supported by a mix of revealing pictures.

For those who were there it brings back memories of a golden age. For those who weren't this well written and witty book gives a colourful insight into what they have missed.

This was a wonderful and compelling read that had to be returned to again and again. Definately one for the bookshelf.

I had the pleasure of seeing this play performed last year by two performers from my high school . It was such a touching story , and wonderfully written . Not only is it wonderful to watch but also to read . I believe that everyone should have the privilage of reading this , maybe even take part in a stage version . It was wonderful and I loved it .

Absolutely brilliant.

I saw this play performed last year, and I wanted more than anything to own it. It's one of the most amazing plays to be written in 'modern' times. Even if you can't see it on stage, you need to read this touching story for yourself. But beware: You may need tissues.

Saving the rainforest is great, but let's save what's here too. First we have to find out what IS here. This encyclopedia does that. All the uses for all the plants - Texas & the South.

A must have!

Definitely a must have for those interested in plants! You'll never look at the "weeds" around your house the same again :)

Extremely in depth coverage of plants from Abronia spp. to Arundo spp. is given, including all manners of uses from culinary to utilitarian. (Other genuses are to be covered in future volumes.) The book is full of wonderful color photographs of all the plants covered - usually several per plant. There are wide margins listing the various uses of the plants (pointing out their discussion in the text), location diagrams of where the plants are found and more.

Although the book covers only the areas described in the title, anyone with more than a fleeting interest in useful plants is sure to appreciate this book - no matter where they might reside.

The book is steeply priced for sure, but once you open it you will understand why. It is extremely well researched, a fact that is very evident throughout the text. Also, as mentioned above, the book abounds with gorgeous color photographs. Had the book not been a gift, I would have gladly paid twice the price for it.

The next volume(s) couldn't come fast enough for me. I am beginning to get a bit worried though as to the future of the series since I obtained my copy in 1996 and haven't heard anything on newer volumes... Even if this is the only volume that comes out it is still definitely worth the purchase.

Congratulations on a wonderful book to Scooter Cheatham and Marshall C. Johnston.

--> Update: The second volume did come out! If you can believe it, it's even better than this one! :D

I got the book as a birthday present for a friend who owns a 1968 vespa. Compared to all the other Vespa books, this had the best combination of vespa-nerd technical information and great historical content -- not just about the development of the scooter, but about how it affected people around the world. I also love the "pillowy" cover, which makes the book not just visually entertaining (so many great photos), but, also just holding it is a great tactile experience.

Although the book is deceptively small, its contents are very comprehensive. Contained between its high quality hard covers is a comprehensive view of the Vespa history, current and former production models and associated marketing programs. It's a very handy travel volume for those of us who love to strike up conversations about the world's most popular scooter brand.
