Motorcycles Books

I have this book open nearly every time I work on my bike. It's given me a lot of confidence in many of my own maintenance activities. However, there are errors in it that if not spotted would possibly cause problems and some of the pictures suffer from horrid resolution and lack of proper light or contrast which make it a little guesswork in finding the parts in question.

The index is relatively useless, leaving out a TON of shortcuts. It relies on indexing only the major sections and not usually the parts you might be looking for info on.

Even so, if you have a baby 'ceptor, and aren't already inclined as a bike mechanic, this is a must have.

This book gets the job done efficiently. The book has lots of pictures and diagrams, including wiring diagrams in the back. The wiring diagrams are complete with wire colors and destinations. I have used the book to pull the engine on my 1984 VF500F several times. The manual led me thru the process with ease. I reccomend this book to the begginer as well as the expert.

Note that this manual does not cover all CBR600 & CBR1000 models. Many illustrations and photographs, to include wiring diagrams.

Overall, this is an excellant repair manual. For those of us that are novice mechanics, there are a few things that could be improved on. My manual was evidently one of the earlier versions. It covered most everything for the "88" to "95" models. For newer models up through "2000", there was an appendix showing the improvements not available in previous years. It required a lot of refering to various chapters just to complete one task. Some diagrams were inaccurate. Otherwise, it was a good manual.

This manual is very good and is a necessary part of your tool kit if you have any intention of doing ANY repair work or just keeping up with oil changes and normal maintenance. I find that just reading about different parts puts everything in perspective for the total bike. This manual would earn 5 stars if the pictures were of better quality.

Relatively complete coverage of Honda motorcycles to 1989. Anyone with a passing interest in motorcycles and/or Honda should find the diversity of these machines quite interesting. Unlike many motorcycle books, this is an ACTUAL book, with more words than pictures! Provides worldwide perspective without shortchanging U.S. models (as many "motorbooks" are produced and/or written in the U.K.).

However, the book is overpriced at list. Also, it really should have at least an extra chapter added to cover the last ten years of very important motorcycle evolution (and resurgence in popularity). But to 1989 it is a great resource.

Many books on motorcycles abound with glossy pictures but contain little facts. This slim volume by Roland Brown is quite the reverse. The majority of photos are original B&Ws, not staged fashion shots, and there is ample text. It is not a coffee table book, it is a real book! The history begins with Soichiro Honda's start after WWII and traces the company's progress to 1989. For the real motorcyclist there is plenty of technical detail which is used to show the evolution from one machine to the next, rather than being just tabulated facts. The story of the development of motorcycles, as we now know them, and the fascinating saga of a multinational company's growth, make excellent reading. My only complaint is that a book this slim (150 small pages), really doesn't warrant a price tag of $25. Never the less, I still bought it, and was glad I did.

I purchase this calendar every year for my husband and he loves it. This year he remarked that he does not like the new format of the days of the month. Rather than being a little box with the days of the month in the traditional format, now the days are strung across the bottom of the calendar and there's no place to put a note or anything. I would like to see it go back the way it was or offer to choose the format of the calendar. Thanks for asking.

I've been a subscriber to Cycle News in the US for many years. My original subscription was for Cycle News East, for those who know, this was quite a few years ago. Before cable TV my only information conserning moto racing on the "Continent" was through these pages. My only connection to racing on "The Island" was through a man by the name of Eddie Labelle, a well respected racer himself in his community, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA who spoke quite respectfully of these races. I knew absolutely nothing about Joey Dunlop. I remember receiving my copys of Cycle News through the time that Joey Dunlop was providing so many people in the world with his special talent. There would be small bits of information that claimed "Joey" wins another one! I still knew nothing about Joey Dunlop. I remember reading about Mike The Bike in retrospect articles, and in Motocourse. I followed the FIM Moto Circus through articles I've read from 79 until now and could tell you about most racers of the time, but I still knew nothing about Joey Dunlop.
I still do not know Joey, but I think I know Himself much better than I did before purchasing this book. Do yourself a favor and get to Know Joey by purchasing this book. You will not only help yourself by knowing...... well, Joey, but you will also be helping his family as all of the proceeds from the sale of this book goes directly to his family. This is a resrectful man that we all need to know.

This is a factual review of Joey Dunlop's career. It is a very nicely produced hard back with great photos. It is probably a must for any Joey Dunlop fan. However, it is not anywhere near as absorbing or personal as "Joey Dunlop, A Tribute" by author and TT winner Ray Knight. Now that is a fabulous book!!!!

Keep the shiny side up!

I really enjoyed this book. A nice description of the car, and its development---as a project, not just as a vehicle.

This is the best book for VW's Karmann Ghia. Granted there are not many out there but this one has pretty much all the info for someone who is interested in this car. The only drawback is that it is not available as a hardback and thus the fifth star is dropped.

The manual is much easier to understand than the Kawasaki Factory Manual. Kawasaki could learn something by taking a look at Honda Factory Manuals (awesome). Anyway...the Clymer manual is a definite "must have" if you own a KLR650.

This manual is more useful and easier to understand than the factory manual(s) and a lot cheaper. Some of the pictures could be a little clearer and the manual assumes a level of mechanical skill that may be a little above that of the average owner, but overall the manual is a must have for this great bike.

It is a good manual. But it does not go in to detail on my 2002 ZX9R.

What do you expect? It is a comprehensive overview of these model bikes. Covers in depth information, but I wanted it for basic maintainence. Unless you are MacGyver, this is good for oil changes, chain maintanence and other basics. Otherwise, you can figure out how to turn your ZX-7R into a mini-submarine.

I have always had a secret liking for Harley-Davidsons. My brother used to own one and would let me ride with him every once in a while, and then there is always the bike run that stops at the Dairy Queen. I sit on my patio faithfully every year and listen to the thunder leave town.

I received a book in the mail a few weeks ago from an old friend of mine about a trip he and his three friends had taken. A motorcycle trip (on none other then Harley-Davidson's) through Mexico. They say never judge a book by its cover, but I did and much to my surprise, it was an awesome book.

Their adventure starts in Laredo, Texas and it literally takes you through Mexico without leaving your chair. The way the author writes it you feel as though you are along on the ride and you are seeing what they are seeing first hand. He talks about going through customs, Spanish speaking locals, banditos, road conditions - toll roads as opposed to back roads, and just plain fun fast riding. The pictures, maps, and informative information in the book complete the story. It is an easy and enjoyable read.

They rode 3,000 miles in 9 days and they got a whole lot of great memories out of the trip.

You hear the song " Born to be Wild" - and one of the verses goes like this, " Get your motor runnin'ead out on the highway lookin' for adventureand whatever comes our way," you truly get that feeling reading this book.

The name of the book is La Ropa Sucia, by Owen L. Riess.

I love riding and I love reading motorcycle adventure books. Unfortunately I was left wanting more after reading Dirty Laundry - as it's a fun little read about the travels of four friends through Mexico, but for me it felt like Riess was skipping over way too many of the juicy details of the ride - which just left me wanting more. So here I am on Amazon buying other motorcycle adventure books and writing a review. I do admire the adventuress spirit and courage required by Riess and Co. to take such a trip - "bravo"! Pictures are a fun addition. Easy, 1 hour read.
