Thoughtful Perspectives on Production Process in the Future
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-27
Review Date: 2001-10-27
Next Generation Manufacturing (NGM) is the name of both this book and the authors' organization so, obviously, Jordan and
Michel believe in the concept. The material is based on the U.S.-based Next Generation Manufacturing Project (NGMP) and the
International Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) program. Together, these initiatives provide a consistent, worldwide
vision for global manufacturing. This book examines that vision with rigor and eloquence. The NGMP identifies the key drivers
that shape the future competitive environment and the attributes of a successful competitor in that environment. It then characterizes
the capabilities ("imperatives") required to meet the drivers and to thrive. The "imperatives" are grouped into four operational
strategies: 1. Building a strong workforce; 2. Developing and implementing advanced knowledge processes; 3. Using advanced
manufacturing systems, processes, equipment, and technology; and 4. Integrating competitive strengths. NGM is explored here
in three ways: through the eyes of the fictional CEO of a fictional large manufacturing company, as he prepares for a planning
meeting with his management team; applying NGM as the CEO sorts through all the issues the management team must consider;
and enabling readers to learn by doing - through exercises that simulate real-life business situations in which they are challenged
to make decisions rooted in NGM principles. From these exercises, readers see firsthand positive results of applying NGM.
Next Generation Manufacturing is must reading, not only for everyone involved in manufacturing from the supervisory level
up, but for anyone else who works closely with manufacturing companies. Management consultants and other service providers,
for instance, can be much more helpful when they understand what NGM is, how it works, and what it can accomplish with effective
management and sufficient capital resources.

Great read, covering rep firm cradle-to-grave lifecycle milestones. Meaty material provides a nice selection of operational

efficiencies, or looking to hand off the company reins to new owners.

Agility is the means by which an enterprise adapts

Wayne Gretrzky for some time has know the .... "Pathways to Agility: Mass Customization in Action". For your information
manufacturing innovation is now in its mass customization stage. To yo unwitting managers who are not yet onboard, fear not,
mass customization is still in its infancy. But one mustn't tarry. To survive the busimess realities of today, tomorrow,
and the next century, one must saddle up soon, according to the author. John Oleson discovered agility as the lone process
industry person at a meeting of automobile industry engineers. He's director of manufacturing technology at Dow Corning
and probably a man of vision. Agility is the means by which an enterprise adapts, stays of top of competition, and
flourishes. If this sounds like Charles Darwin evolutionism, well, it is. Oleson takes us through the history of agility
defined as 1) the ability to predict trends and establish appropriate procedures for handling them, and 2) the ability to
respond with ease to unexpected but anticipated events. The hunter-gatherers needed to outsmart prey, farmers responded
to unexpected changes in the weather to learn effective agriculture, and the craft workers (e.g., tailors, brewers, and
blacksmiths) accomadated the needs of the customer. The invention of interchangable parts bridged the evolution from craft
to mass production. The Japanese taught the world the spirit and culture of lean manufacturing and it has become a part
of the industrial West. Mass Customization, giving people a product that is made just for them or seems to be that way, does
not displace any of these improvements. It's simply the next evolutionary step for the survivors, the agile. Oleson
illuminates the pathway by outlining the strategic and technical issues tapping a wealth of first hand experience and judiciously
using anecdotes. This interesting and informative read is to be used by manufacturing managers and engineers looking to
make the tenets of agility a part of the companies' futures. The Great One, perhaps the most successful athlete in
any sport, explains his uncanny sucess quite simply, "Iskate to where the puck is going to be." Review by "INTECH" July
1998 in their Books and More section. "INTEK is a Instrument Society of America publication.

This book really explains things well. It goes through the whole car, system / part by system / part, explains what can go
wrong, what repairs are useful, which aren't, common mistakes and ripoffs, etc. I'm learning a great deal about how cars
work as I read. Really superb. Looks like current edition is 1993 and I don't see a newer one, but the info still seems very
solid and useful. I'm currently reading a copy out of my local library and will probably buy one. This book should be reissued
and aggressively marketed, in my opinion.

Excellent Texas history seen through the eyes and exploits of tireless pioneer buffalo hunter Frank Brown.
Details his story as recalled by his relative, Edith McGinnis.
Shows what the determination, effort, prayer and thoughtfulness of one individual can accomplish.
Read this and you hear first hand about the rugged men and their families who hunted on the Texas plains, withstood countless scrapes with the indians, fought off 1000 armed indian braves at the adobe walls, settled wilderness in Texas and created a Friends (Quaker) settlement with Friendswood, Texas.
Mrs. McGinnis did a fine job of recording Frank Brown's stories and is to be complimented.
The stories rate up there with those of L'Amour in detail and these are true to boot!

Important to note, is that the book I have, and am reviewing is titled: Radio Manufacturers of the 1920's VOLUME 1.
This only covers radios from AC-Dayton through J.B. Ferguson. You would need another volume for radios such as RCA, etc.
But I primarily am interested in Atwater Kent radios, and this has a great history and bio on Atwater Kent radios. Throughout the book are TONS of photos of radios and old ads, pictures of workers in the factories at the time, etc.
In fact, you get quite a few old full page ads that take up full pages of the book.
Very nice book to have in one's collection!

This is one of the rare books on subject that is passing experience of seasoned professional rather than pushing through usual
'DIY get rich quick' hype.
Very important invention marketing nuances are described in detail and different strategies highlighted in detail. Only here, author sometimes explains two opposite strategies in parallel, without pointing which details belongs to which strategy.
One should prise the author for having down to earth business approach. In the very beginning of the book he points out that, if the costs like patenting, prototyping etc. are higher than potential royalties one should rethink the whole exercise. On the end of the day only one in thousand inventions becomes successful in the marketplace.
