bad news first:
as a skater i'd have to say that i appreciated the book by melicious a bit more, it was a bit more inspiring and informational for a roller girl active in the sport. as willy callit sez, the captions could've been a bit more descriptive, but as that wasn't what the book was about that's more of a personal preference and not really a flaw. again, another personal preference would've been to see more national representation of current leagues, this one seems REALLY centered in the western conference. if you're an eastern girl and are looking for familiar faces, you probably won't see any unless you travel around a lot.
BUT this book has really great photography, i mean it's really, really nice. it's supported by thorough research and is a quality read. i definitely enjoyed it and am glad i bought it. if you want to know more about the origins of derby yesterday and today, and get up to date on how the game is played, you really need to read this one. recommended, for sure!

I need to carry this book with me at all times!

I absolutely love this book!
I have been playing roller derby for almost 3 years and never have I found something that so completely and beautifully illustrates what this sport is to me and what I love about it-- I feel like I need to keep it with me at all times so I can show it to strangers who ask me about derby. The book explains it so much better than I can.
The pictures are gorgeous, and obviously shot and selected by people who know and love derby. Granted, it is a coffee table book, but for someone who wants to know what roller derby is but doesn't have the time to commit to a novel and just wants to get the basic gist and leaf through pages and pages of phtographic eye candy, this book is perfect. This book is a must-have for any derby girl or derby fan, or family member or friend who wants to know what all the fuss is about.
Catherine Mabe knows derby, knows the derby community, and in general just knows what she's talking about. Her book is lovely. Buy it!

Excellent Biography

Review Date: 2003-05-25
Mnay biographies focus on human interest rather than factual information. This is not one of those. This book is meticulously researched and presents all the facts Mr. Gropman came across. The reader can make his or her own conclusion based on the facts the author presents, but the facts will probably lead the reader to conclude that Joe Jackson was not involved in the Black Sox scandal that nearly ruined baseball.

Mr. Gropman clearly demonstrates what many authors are unable to do: the ability to present an opinion based on fact, rather than speculation. I was impressed with this book because it provided me with much information on Joe Jackson's life, particularly on whether he was or wasn't involved in the scandal. The facts lead to the conclusion, not the other way around, and I like that. Baseball fans interested in the history of the game should read this book. They will enjoy it.

I loved this book! Joe Jackson should be in the hall of fame! After reading this book and all the insights to his life, I have become a huge fan of Shoeless Joe. This book will tell you all about his involment with the "Black Sox". Like how he tried to tell Comiskey about the scandle before the 1919 series. And, how he also tried to give the money to Comiskey before the news hit the papers. If you want to know about one of the best players you need to read this book. By the way it was a life time band from baseball....his life ended in December 1951.

"Shoeless" Joe Jackson Belongs in the Hall of Fame

Review Date: 2004-02-13
Donald Gropman is the leading historian on the life of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. In his revised edition of the book, Gropman gives an objetive look at the life of Joe Jackson, including the scandal that ended his career. Gropman's argument leaves little doubt that this legend belongs in the baseball hall of fame. Quite simply, the hall of fame is incomplete without him.

The other members of the Black Sox sought to add Jackson to the fix. Jackson never committed. Jackson even went so far as to tell Sox owner Charles Comiskey and attempted to sit out the World Series to demonstrate his innocence. These actions which would have exonerated him were rejected. Comiskey just felt Jackson was hearing rumors. When the scandal hit full force, Comiskey tried to save his players. Unfortunately, Comiskey's lawyer was only interested in saving Comiskey, not the players. The great tragedy is that Comiskey, depite his Richard Nixon-like tactics, is in the hall of fame while "Shoeless" Joe Jackson is not.

Gropman lays out a tremendous amount of evidence that supports Jackson's innocence. Despite this mountain of evidence and growing support for Joe Jackson's reinstatement, baseball's commissioners have largely ignored the case for Joe Jackson.

This book sets the standard for "Shoeless" Joe Jackson's life as well as the case for his reinstatement into baseball and his induction into the hall of fame. With the additions of transcripts, letters, and other pieces of evidence, this book is more than worth its price. Gropman also provides information for joining the Shoeless Joe Jackson Society and fighting to clear his name. I would encourage you to join.

Review Date: 1997-07-28
Gropman states early on that he intends to provethat Jackson had no involvement in the Black Soxscandal of 1919 and succeeds. He demonstrates the hows and whys of Jackson's "involvement" and shows why Jackson took money when he didn't participate in the fix. Though Gropman goes out of his way to glorify Jackson in some instances, for the most part this is highly readable, well-researched bio of "Shoeless Joe" and demonstrates once and for all that Jackson belongs in the Hall of Fame.

I had invited my husband's golf buddies over to celebrate his birthday and gave his this book as a gift. The golfers spent quite awhile looking at the pictures and making comments about the difficulty of the shots and wishing they were playing the courses the holes were on. It provided a lot of fun for them during the party. The pictures are great and really depict what the book is all about.

I bought this as a bit of a gag gift both for my husband and another friend of ours, and I must admit, it's really a fascinating look at some of the bizarre and unusual golf courses around the globe - from a course designed around the shapes of naked women (seen from above) to a course played amidst giraffes and other safari-type wildlife, the pictures, descriptions, and history are entertaining and well done.

I don't get the review below, if you hate golf, why would you write a review on a golf book? My dad loves to golf and I understand that he probably won't be able to go to all the golf courses in this book; however, I know he'll enjoy reading and seeing the pictures of some of these extreme courses. I'm definitely going to buy this book for him.

I was a bit disappointed with this book since a majority of the stories that I have read so far appear in the Jesus Freak books. Also, condensing the full stories of these amazing heroes of faith into little bite size devotional nuggets seems to lose some of the impact. That being said, Voice of The Martyrs is a great organization to support anyways, so go ahead and buy it.

"The Sorcerer's Apprentice" by Robert Silverberg - The twist is that the sorcerer is actually a woman, and the apprentice is a young man who is instantly smitten by her. However, she treats him coldly...most of the time.

"Perpetua" by Kit Reed - Strange story in which a father's love is carried too far.

"The Edges of Never-Haven" by Catherine Asaro - In the town of Never-Haven, people live in curved houses and cannot create any straight line, not even a line in the dirt, without summoning demons.

"Pat Moore" by Tim Powers - Brilliant, suspenseful ghost story.

"Six Hypotheses" by Joyce Carol Oates - Strange story showing six hypotheses for the basis of a violent incident in a seemingly normal family.

"The Silver Dragon" by Elizabeth A. Lynn - In this land the King can shapechange into a dragon.

"Fallen Angel" by L.E. Modesitt, Jr. - Devout religious people may not care for this story much.

"The Following" by P.D. Cacek - Chilling ghost story with a twist.

"A Tower With No Doors" by Dennis L. McKiernan - Nice take on Rapunzel

"Boomerang" by Larry Niven - Too short to describe

"Wonderwall" by Elizabeth Hand - Sorry, don't remember much about this one (I don't have the book anymore)

"Blood, Oak, Iron" by Janny Wurts - Every time a King dies, the successor is possessed by an evil spirit. Can the cycle ever be broken?

"Riding Shotgun" by Charles de Lint - A man clearing out his deceased father's estate stumbles upon an old car and is transported back in time to a critical event in his past.

"Demons Hide Their Faces" by A.A. Attasnasio - A skeptical young man discovers the truth about missing books.

"Relations" by Nina Kiriki Hoffman - Can't remember

"Tourists" by Neal Barrett, Jr. - Can't remember

"The White Man" by Thomas M. Disch - A chilling tale of race relations and vampires.

"Out of the Woods" by Patricia A. McKillip - can't remember

"Perchance to Dream" by David Morrell - A doctor tries to treat a patient for sleep disorder.

"Coming Across" by Harry Turtledove - Elves who can live forever (if they don't die of boredom-literally) created a gate to visit another world (ours) in search of interesting experiences. Little do they know what they will find and accidentally bring back with them.

"The Problem of Susan" by Neil Gaiman - Related to C.S. Lewis's The Last Battle

"Keeper of Lost Dreams" by Orson Scott Card - A young person discovers he is the keeper of the title

"Watchfire" by Raymond E. Feist & Janny Wurts - can't remember

"Tots" by Peter Schneider - Four-year old children who fight each other to death for the amusement of adults

"Jupiter's Skull" by Jeffrey Ford - A strange psychic woman leaves a legacy in tea leaves for a man and woman who had visited her often when she was alive.

"Death's Door" by Terry Bisson - What happens when the dying can't die?

"Bill, the Little Steam Shovel" by Joe R. Lansdale - A totally irreverent, hilarious tale of a steam shovel who dreams of being more than he is.

"Sleepover" by Al Sarrantonio - Two children wake up on a flat, deserted, alien plain.

"Golden City Far" by Gene Wolfe - A young man's dreams invade his waking life.

A wonderful mix of classic and modern fantasy, as well as stories that defy categorizing. Despite the title, the stories are not about flights or flying. Not all of the stories are winners, but there is enough good stuff here to warrant a 5 star recommendation.

My personal favorites: "Pat Moore" by Tim Powers, "The Silver Dragon" by Elizabeth A. Lynn, "Riding Shotgun" by Charles de Lint, "Coming Across" by Harry Turtledove, and "Bill, the Little Steam Shovel" by Joe R. Lansdale.

I initially bought this book out of my love for Neil Gaiman and his fiction. I wanted to read a rather elusive short story of his, which I wasn't disappointed by. To further add to my pleasure was how engaging the other tales were. All were imaginative, unique, and - at times - impossible to put down.

The only reason I didn't give this a perfect 5 out of 5 was because, as with any anthology, the stories can be hit or miss. While most of the authors and their respective styles compliment the collection, there are a few that just didn't grip me like the others. Keep in mind, this is more of a personal tastes issue than a comment against the authors, so I won't name names. I'll just finish by saying if you like fantasy anthologies, this is a wonderful addition.

I didn't quite know what to expect from such a tile, what they meant by extreme. It's mostly unusual ways to approach fantasy, intended for an audience that matured from dragons and elves and expects a little bit more. I found many of the stories refreshingly original, twisted, and mind-bending. Among my favorites was a new take on Rapunzel told by an unlikely character, a sweet and sad story of a fallen angel, an interesting visit to Hell, and last but not least, a lion a bit too friendly to a certain witch. I also found some useful information, like how to tell when there's a demon around, by an unusual separation of cold and hot air. Good to know. An entertaining collection on the whole and that will most likely make me search for more books from some of the authors.

Just received this this week,(good way to start the new year) and I'm impressed with this book but I'm not surprised with
anything that Al Sarrantonio put his hands to. What a cast of
characters that deliver these stories. I'm just finishing up
the great American East Texas storyteller Joe R. Lansdale and
his new story, "Bill, the little steam shovel" and its nothing
like I've read by Joe before but its so good, so like Joe Lansdale in its detail, humor and vision. This anthology has
so many great stories and what a list of who's who... Orson Scott Card, Joyce
Carol Oats, Neal Barrett jr., Charles De Lint, P.D. Cacek,
Robert Silverberg, Nina Hoffman, Neil Gaiman, David Morrell,
Ray Feist as well as the above master story teller Joe Lansdale
this is a great way to spend extra time around the holidays!

My complaint with most mountain bike "how-to" guides is that they gear the reader toward being a professional rider. That's because they are most often written by professional riders. Seldom has a book been written that just covers the basic questions like "How do I jump a small dirt mound?" or "What is the difference between the different types of rear-suspensions that are available?" This book answers those basic questions without getting into so much detail that the average rider will be bored. The text and illustrations are clear, concise, and entertaining. The outline of the book brings the reader from shopping for their first bike, right up through explaining some of the most basic "expert" techniques. But, again, the book is very much geared toward first time or beginner riders and is intended to gradually step them up through the ranks of bad, to better, to good.

In short, this book covers most all of the basic techniques you will need to be a good novice mountain bike rider. And that's exactly what I want to be.

This is a great book. Great. For anyone interested in solo performance, it's history and performers, this is the book. I do not know of a book as expansive, yet concise, which takes texts from early 20th Century performers like Moms Mabley and Ruth Draper to modern masters like the late-Spalding Gray and Dael Orlandersmith.
Edited by Jo Bonney, a director famous for solo productions, and featuring introductions to each performer's section, this becomes a theatre book unlike any I've come across.
Lenny Bruce, Andy Kaufman, Lord Buckley, Whoopi Goldberg, John Leguizamo, Anna Deavere Smith, Roger Guenveur Smith, Laurie Anderson, Lily Tomlin, etc., etc....
Works are featured in fragments, specific character pieces from larger plays, and many of the performers have multiple pieces, exhibiting their styles, poetry, innovation and skill.
This is a great book.

Who were the Pharisees?

In Tom Hovestol's book, Extreme Righteousness, the author looks into an important group of people who were around during Jesus time. They had a lot of power being the religious leaders of their day, and many looked up to them as holy individuals. Yet Jesus often exposed them for their hypocrisy. In the modern Christian church, we are taught to view the Pharisees as wolves in sheep's clothing. They were the enemies of Jesus, hence the enemies of God. We have learned to despise them. We are told we are nothing like them. Or are we?

A friend gave me this book about two years ago. I dreaded reading it, but once I got started it was wonderful. This book is about every Christian. There is a Pharisee in all of us. But we are not left with the dilemna. Tom Hovestol eloquently and practically points the reader to the grace of God.

Surprisingly, this was a very interesting and encouraging book.

I read this book and was spiritually challenged with nearly every page with Mr. Hovestol's application of Scripture.

Unlike the misconception of most, the Pharasees were rightreous people in many ways. They were rooted in the scriptures, and zealously seeked to both teach and walk in the law. They are strikingly almost identical with the many churches we have today. Some were harsh and fundamental, while others were merciful and flexible. But as history shows their love for being good at both the scriptures and life style led them to self righteouness, legalism, traditionalism an using God's words to both blind and bind them, the identical characteristics that can be clearly seen in many churches throughout the world. Our extenal human righteousness can surely take us away from the invisible, inner reality of a pure and intimate relatiohship with Christ. This book is one of the best books I have read on legalism and the formation of the fundamentalist way of thinking that happens to the most sincere and good people: ourselves. As a former fundamenalist, this book is an eye opener to the dynamics of legalism and one-sided thinking.

Outstanding Book To Examine The Heart Of Every Leader

In Tom Hovestol's book, Extreme Righteousness, the author looks to the Pharisees:

ZEALOUS FOR SCRIPTURES

SCRUPULOUS IN THEIR GIVING

DEDICATED TO LIVING UNTAINTED BY THE WORLD

FERVENT IN ANTICIPATING GOD'S DELIVERANCE

CONSCIENTIOUS IN OBEDIENCE TO GOD'S COMMANDS

These phrases describe the Pharisees. And they describe our own churches. Exploring their historical and Biblical roots, the author discovers penetrating truths that warn, enlighten and protect belivers from their disastrous path.

Incredible chapters bringing conviction and hope for every leader. Some of the more impacting chapters: When Bible Knowledge Blinds & Binds When Tradition Twists Truth When The Sick Look Fit When A Private Relationship Becomes A Public Show

I appreciated the discussion of the five Jewish groups of Jesus' time: The Herodians, Sadducees, Pharisees - Hillel & Shammai, Zealots and Essenes.

In answering the question, why is our self-righteousness unseen?, the author speaks of our blindness to it by the following agencies:

Blinded by our culture Blinded by our morality Blinded by religion Blinded by knowledge

The warning lights of self righteousness? 1. A Contemptuous View Of Others 2. A Shallow Sense Of Forgiveness 3. A Wrong Sense Of Grace & Fairness 4. An Unhealthy View Of Failure

A deep heart-encountering book recommended for any leader.

This format is very convenient. The book has all of the same words listed in both the official SAT material and the Barron's SAT 2400. Great for on the road studying and has room for you to put a picture or another sentence on the pages.

I like learning vocabulary. This is chock full of hard words, the kind I had on my flash cards. I have to say though, this book is about 1/3 easy words, like euphemism and antiquated, but it's worth it's weight in gold for the hard words it has. very convenient and easy to use!
