This book provides a nice introduction to the mathematical theory of rare events and extreme values. It takes the point process approach to rare events using the empirical point process defined by the crossing of a high or low level to employ an approximate Poisson process. This approach has broad applicability and the authors use it to consider rare and extreme events for stochastic processes including Gaussian processes, Poisson point processes, extreme value models and nonparametric regression.
This book is noteworthy for its mix of theory and application and for the introduction of the software XTREMES. Chapter 6 is devoted to explaining how to analyze data for extremes using the software XTREMES. A diskette is included with the text with version 1.2 of XTREMES that is an interactive program that can run on MS-DOS operated computers. The text is very much up-to-date on the theoretical developments as of 1994.

Sarah Chase does a great job adressing issues us parents would just as soon didn't exist. Her writing style is very easy reading and you do not need to be an academic to enjoy it. Although my children attend a prep school in California, many of the issues the teenagers face are the same.

Sarah Chase provides a working vocabulary for us to discuss this sector of our society (affluent New England boarding school communities) and, at the same time, offers another arena in which to discuss the ways the stresses and pulls of adolescence affect boys and girls differently. She delivers on her promise to separate, skillfully and fairly, the issues that confront boys and the issues that confront girls with keen perception and careful research. Her prose is smooth and accessible, and she makes her points without judgement or animus. Bravo!
I can't help wondering if the co-authors of RESTLESS VIRGINS wish they could have read PERFECTLY PREP as part of their research on the adolescent behavior that caught their imagination.

This is a great book, an entertaining book, and an important book for anyone who dares to oppose political regimes. [Frustuated] Little Creep is a series of essays (illustrated!!) about Christopher Brodeur's foray into the dark underbelly of NYC politics. If you dare to oppose Giuliani, expect constant police harrassment and occasional jail time. Things are no different now, especially w/ the Bush dynasty in power. [Frustuated] Little Creep will both make you laugh and make you angry.

Perverted Little Creep is the organized, detailed and insightfully intelligent ramblings of fascinating, handsome and charismatic madman, Christopher X. Brodeur. Christopher's writing is funny, witty, personable, addictive and thoroughly honest. A little bit of background information on CXB - Christopher is a prolific and talented artist, writer and musician who lives in Manhattan. He ran for Mayor of NYC in 2001 with a bag over his head because he didn't want to be elected based on anything besides his ideas, which, by the way, are stellar. He was arrested for this 'stunt' and before he knew it was wrapped up in an ongoing battle of Chris vs. Giuliani and the NYPD which included illegal arrests, searches and treatment of his belongings and his person. (If you want to read more about him, go to his website - www.mayorbrodeur.com) Several of these accounts are detailed in his book, "Perverted Little Creep." He talks about being sent to Riker's Island, beating Giuliani (over and over again) in court, and proves that Giuliani was a bad man who did many bad things. I read his book in two days - I honestly couldn't put it down. I consider myself thoroughly politically ignorant but this book not only appeals to those interested in politics, it also appeals to artists, the working class, psychologists, sociologists, underdogs, anyone living in NYC, everyone who likes to read interesting writing, fans of Christopher's, and the list goes on, infinity, ad nauseum. After reading his book, I have better knowledge of the world around me and the city I live in (NYC). I am one of those people who likes to think everything is nicey nice, even when the facts point elsewhere. This book snapped me out of it a little. It said, "Hey, Jessica. Just because a man is wearing a business suit doesn't mean that he won't rape you." Buy and read this book, then when you are done, give it to a friend to read and tell them to pass it on. Thankfully, there are people like Christopher Brodeur who are fearless for those of us who are not.

This was a cool book!
The story is about a boy named Keegan, who skis. He gets all tangled up in a mess that surrounds the local resort--snowboarding equipment that's being stolen. In order to figure out the source of the problem, he has to trade in his skis for a snowboard, and he befriends a new snowboarder who doesn't seem dangerous, but as time goes by, questionable things happen...
Quick chapters, drastic cliffhangers plots, and the author's wit is the perfect solution to keep anyone intrigued with the book, and craving more.

Keegan Bishop is a terrific skier, but the real question is, can he snowboard? He is about to find out and find out fast in this Rippin' adventure. He finds a wire stretched across two trees and in his direct ski path. He witnesses people putting some snowboards into his team mate's van...they belong to someone else. He over hears them planning to meet at night at the top of the ski run. He gets to the top of the ski run and he has already been spotted. The guy has a gun, he hasn't yet mastered snowboarding yet, but he needs to get help and get help fast! A girl's life is in danger and so is his own! Read this book, it's great!

I have never read a better explanation into what drives people to extremes of sensation. I have rarely laughed so loud. Martin's low key style well serves a high key content. In their own words, those who were involved in the wonderful adventures of the dangerous sports club describe events that made extreme sports an artform. Martin provides the background, memories and the ongoing story as the club and its members ultimately lurch into obscurity. If you have the least imagination, you will laugh and be inspired.

Before I read this book I thought that bare fist fights were a myth. I have since found taht they are in fact a reality, not just in the States but world wide. If you want complete reviews on this book go to www.amazon.co.uk which I have done. This man is as famous in the UK as he is in the USA and indeed in Spain, France and Germany. Now in his mid fifties he looks back on his life and shares not only the bad times but the good times with special reference to his family and their culture. In no way is this book the usual ego massage of a fighter, he tells of his many defeats. Great read.
Great stories told with humour and passion.

I was directed to this book from a friend in the UK who I met on the internet. I am a keen follower of all fight books but got more than I bargained for when I bought this baby. This guys life took me to places I have never been, not even in my wildest dreams. I had heard of the fight circuit written about here in California and wanted to learn more, it wasnt until I actually started to read this book that I found the history I was looking for by pure chance. Even though he tried to stay out of the circuit he got drawn back in because it was all he knew having a poor education and so few options. Billy, if you're out there and you read this. RESPECT TO YOU! You had a real bad life man but turned it round...you thanks America for your opportunity to achieve what you couldnt do in the UK but your success is your own. I love the book and was so sad when it came to an end. I miss you man!

Billy Miller has compiled a collection of stories written by some of the best writers in the world of snowboarding. He's taken them and organized them in such a way that any newbie (beginner) or seasoned snowboarding pro will walk away having learned something about the sport they love or hope to learn to love. Learn the history of the sport, and then continue onward into the personal lives of some of the sports icons. Learn basic and advanced tricks all to the tune of rocking full color photography, albeit some of it slightly outdated. Consider it a history lesson in extreme with an inside look at a snowy white snowboarding world that is now as common as MTV, but was once a renegade outlaw sport. Take it to the limit. Billy Miller and his team of contributors did. You won't be disappointed in this book, I thought I knew everything there was to know about snowboarding. Mr. Miller proved me wrong.
