Wow.

I've not done any plastic modeling in years, yet I still couldn't wait to crack open this incredible book. Like all the Verlinden books, the only problem is that they're too short! (And if they were a 1000 pages they'd still be too short!)

Mind blowing realism

The six dioramas in this book are stunning in their depiction of scenes from World War II. The level of detail and weathering are superb, and the effort Mr Nossmann put in his work is evident throughout. I am an avid modeller and am always looking for inspiration in my projects, and the dioramas pictured in this book are very inspiring indeed. The armor and figure modelling are both first class, with incredible realism in the foliage, equipment, and individuals. Truly a must have for modellers who enjoy looking at well-built models, but be forewarned this book does not show the techniques, only pictures of the finished project. Nevertheless, I consider this an excellent addition to any WW II buff's or modeller's library.

Selecting, processing and making available audio and video products, CD-ROM, and online reference are not traditional librarian jobs. But the digitized traditional library has different concerns. The virtual library still needs collection and public service librarians, catalogers, and information processing experts. It also needs the corporate sector, funding agencies, and information producers and providers: the Library of Congress digitized historical collections on limited Congressional funds and huge private fundraising. Librarians have a pioneering tradition: barcodes before grocery stores; book sorting and shelving robots in Europe; cooperative cataloging and indexing for decades; the ILL code in the 1930s; and self-checkout. So they can handle the traditional acquisition of property and the digital acquisition of rights while plugging away at storing, finding and getting out information. Peggy Johnson and Bonnie MacEwan see to it that libraries will be VIRTUALLY YOURS whether you are librarian, staff or user. The book joins up with Pat Ensor's THE CYBRARIAN'S MANUAL, Joan Giesecke's PRACTICAL STRATEGIES FOR LIBRARY MANAGERS, Robert S. Want's LIBRARY OF CONGRESS ONLINE, and Anne Woodsworth's PATTERNS AND OPTIONS FOR MANAGING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ON CAMPUS.

This was an interesting book for the VW enthuiast. It showed some VW toys that I forgot existed, and which I found shortly after. Naturally, there is no way to put true value on these type of toys, but the numbers are a good basis for negotiations. All-in-all, a good book for the price.

The Wars of the Barbary Pirates.....

Review Date: 2008-03-27
A current interest in the War of 1812 led me to this book by Gregory Fremont-Barnes, who holds a doctorate in history from Oxford University. The very long title for a relatively small book tells you exactly what to expect from it. Its 95 pages are so well presented, so succinct yet so full of information, that it is a pleasure to read. Illustrations on every page -- maps, reproductions of historical paintings and line drawings are indeed worth thousands of words. The two-column pages offer a journalistic feel -- that current news is being presented by top reporters.

A three-page chronology summarizes the contents of the book for those who want to find facts instantly. The Introduction is also all-encompassing -- it tells all that the book contains. A "Further Reading" list at the end leads readers and researchers to other sources on this fascinating subject. An index pinpoints all the events, people, places and shipping vessels found in the book.

I was seeking information on the USS Epervier, the ill-fated ship that was lost at sea returning to America from North Africa bearing the Treaty of Ghent which formalized the end of the War of 1812 between the British and the Americans. I also wanted information on Stephen Decatur and other prominent commodores and captains of US ships of that era. This book far exceeded my expectations. I am so very pleased that Google pointed me to it and Amazon.com had it in stock. I love this book, and recommend it without reservation to anyone wanting a palatible source of information on this pivotal period of our history that is so woefully lacking in below-college-level schools.

The unmatched bravery of the Navy of a new republic

This is a terrific book about the long forgotten Naval war against the Islamic pirates of North Africa. It recalls our Navy's first heroes, particularly Stephen Decatur. It should remind everyone that the history of conflict between the civilized world and Islam goes back many centuries. The book documents conflicts between those who recognize the situation for what it is and seek to end it by force, and the diplomats who seek to appease the Barbary pirates. Not surprisingly, then as now, the Navalists were right. Altogether, this is a well-told, well-documented book about the conflict of civilized nations, with one of the world's longest running pathologies.

I have all of these published to date. They have a very high and uniform quality of content. The each edition contains material researched by international subject matter experts. The Hosho, De Grasse, Calabria and Italian Torpedo boat articles were all very interesting. If you are a naval history and ship construction nut, there really is only one other periodical to go for this kind and quality of information. I love both.

Great Articles

Review Date: 2005-07-26
Warship is an annually produced compilation of articles on the design, development and service hostory of the world's combat ships. The 2005 issue is one of the most interesting volumes yet.

The first article is on the failure of British armor piercing big gun shells to pierce armor and then to fail to explode. It is surprising to me that such little details seemingly are ignored until a country goes to war, ships have sunk, and people have died. I was reminded of the failure of the American (and German) torpedoes to explode. After all the effort put into submarines, training the crew and sending them off to war, it appears that only one live test of a torpedo had been run and it had failed.

Another article is on the early steam powered torpedo boats built by the Royal Navy in the late 1800's. These definitely do not look like they would be good boats on which to serve. I had seen pictures of them before but the article goes into things like sea keeping, and life on board as well as more technical details on the ships.

The articles in this book are not short, averaging something over a dozen pages. Annual columns reviewing the navies of the world, a gallery of pictures and others take up about a quarter of the book.

As usual, this is a fascinating book. It brings up points of history that aren't seen very often. It's very very well written. Highly recommended to any interested person.

This was the first novel I have read by Eric Bogosian (I'm currently reading Mall), and I am hooked. His beautiful writing as the three main characters (Billy, Rick and Reba) and the ability to switch between all three to first person will keep you reading. As the reader, you develop sincere feeling for these characters, even though on the outside they look like a raging alcoholic, a drug addicted model and a cheating husband. Bogosian dives deeper into each of their brains, making it a must read!

If I were to compare Bogosian's first novel, Mall: A Novel, to his play subUrbia then I would also make a comparison between 'Wasted Beauty' and his recent play 'Red Angel'. The Jeff of both Mall and subUrbia were two closely related characters, much like the leading men in Wasted Beauty and Red Angel. In print, however, Bogosian is able to delve deeper into the characters' inner thoughts. When reading his work, one can just tell that Bogosian is an actor -- he often follows dialogue directly with subtext, which I liked. Rick, the main character in 'Beauty', actually has roots that go much further back in Bogosian's work than 'Angel'. He is reminiscent of the peeping-tom in Mall, who was a descendent of Bogosian's recovering-male-character from his solos. If you've been following his work, I would say you will definitely appreciate this book, and if you haven't, now's a good time to start.

Great coverage of current and older watchmaker lathes
Helpful Votes: 33 out of 33 total.
Review Date: 1999-09-03
This book is divided in two parts. The first half of the book covers the overall concepts and use of watchmaker's lathes. The second half reviews all the models that might be typically found. Not entirely encompassing list... but pretty close.

If you are considering buying a watchmaker's lathe... this is a MUST HAVE book. Also, this is highly recommended for any one who likes lathes in general.

It's obvious the author really cares about his subject. It is enjoyable to read. The diagrams are excellent.

Crazy as this sounds, the photos are very good, but actually I thought the line art of the machines (like you see in the Wall Street Journal) is more understandable than regular photos.

Originally published in 1952, it has been updated over the years in several editions. This fifth edition in 1998 incorporates much of the original material... in the areas of general concepts. Then it substantially revises the second half of the book regarding the lathes of the world that are generally found.

The book lists lots of good resources in the back -- for manufacturers, etc.

A book you will come back to, time and again

If you grew up around an old wood boat, Chris Craft, Century, Hacker or one of the many others, you will be capitivated by Joe Soucheray's account of his resurrection of "the boat his dad gave away to settle a $90 storage bill". While the boat Joe first finds is the same model and it isn't til later on that he does locate his dad's boat, Joe still lavishes a considerable amount of emotional and financial attention to this project. I'm working on a similar project with a 1947 Chris Craft. I have no ties to this boat like Joe had for his, but it is truly a labor of love for me to strip, repair, sand, fair, stain and varnish this boat. I consider it water-borne art. Every week while working on this boat, I pick up Waterline and re-read a chapter. Joe's descriptions of the various personalities in this saga are riveting. You will enjoy the story immensely.

Joseph Olshan writes beautifully.

I first read Joseph Olshan's book "The Nightswimmer" and was truly intrigued by the tale of Will Kaplan. And how his love of swimming and of the ocean play in his life. Then I found this book, "The Waterline", which featured Billy Kaplan, who loved to swim. In both novels, things that are precious and special to Billy/Will are taken away by the water. In "The Waterline", the story is told by three important voices-by his parents, Susan and Michael and by young Billy. Each tale their sides of the story of the one fateful summer day when a drowing took the life of a young boy and what Billy knew. Billy was only seven when this happen and for long 15 years, he and parents sort out what has happened and how to "make things right" again. The only person who truly understands what Billy is going through is his mothers sister, Rita. Rita was traumatized in her young life and can completely relate to what has happened to Billy, that she helps him long distance to find his resolve. I highly recomend this book and that anyone should read "The Nightswimmer" after. Billy /Will lead and interesting life and to find closure. No matter how long it takes.

I think the reason your daughter thought you were being "silly" and that your student thought you were "nuts" is that they did not have the benefit of your perspective. Your perspective on happiness encompasses all people, all situations, the earth, the universe, and all of creation. If people cannot step outside themselves, they will not be able to see the beauty of your view.
