It will change your point of view on how to finish your models forever. It made a 100% improvement on my painting and finishing skills. It gave me courage to try new techniques withoout fear or remorse in doing so. Every page is full of interesting content. A pleasure to reffer to again and again.

This book cuts through the mystery of putting an award winning finish on a model car. It answers all of the questions I've ever had about the subject of scale model finishes and has significantly improved the overall quality of all my models. Its well written and leads the modeler step-by-step through all the processes.

1. Book is for new complex computer systems. However I use in support of an aging Naval Aviation Aircraft ( A/C ). I am no mathematician, however with my trusty ERA books on Calculus, Statistics, and Vector Calculus, I was able to " tread the waters ". I have performed many, many Reliability & Support Analysis, and CARMS provides another very usefull tool. Math majors should have no difficulty with the subject matter, however applying this is the high light of the book;
2. I have been very unsucessfull in trying to reach the authors to make recommendations on the next revision. I request assistance, and will leave my employment phone number below. Thanks.

This book is good for all those people who like to build armor models. It starts with the most basic assembly and then goes into scratch building a must for any new-comer in the world of modeling.

This was the first book I bought when I started modeling 2 years ago, and I still go back to read it some more. The chapters on painting and weathering also appear in his other excellent book, "How to Build Dioramas". You might want to get this instead if you dabble in different types of scale model building. If you're an armor aficionado like I am, this book is a must, even if you already have a few models under your belt. There are lots of helpful tips, especially on scratchbuilding details and accessories. This has been written some time ago, and you may find some of his techniques a bit dated, but this has withstood the test of time gracefully.

Modelling Financial Time series

This is (still) an excellent book, ahead of its time when published in 1986. One of the issues he dealt with was the possible modifications to option pricing models (black-scholes type) that could be made to account for trending markets. This was before the crash of '87 and the subsequent wide-spread adoption of skewed volatility smiles and risk-reversals into option pricing.

This book is probably out of print permanently, but the author is working on a new book, the provisional title of which is "Asset Price Dynamics and Prediction" Target Date of March 2004. The chapters are loosely based on subjects covered in Modelling Financial Time series.

Chapter headings for Modelling Financial Time series:

1. Introduction
2. Features of financial returns
3. Modelling price volatility
4. Forecasting standard deviations
5. The accuracy of autocorrelation estimates
6. Testing the random walk hypothesis
7. Forecasting trends in prices
8. Evidence against the efficiency of futures markets
9. Valuing options
10. Concluding remarks
Appendix : a computer program for modelling financial time series

Rigorous but practical survey of time-series for traders.

The first edition was published in 1986. It is EXCELLENT. Taylor rigorously studies the use of nonlinear time-series (Box-Jenkins) methods to trade a variety of financial markets, including individual stocks, stock indices, currencies, metals, and agricultural commodities, finding that there is a small trend component in most markets that can be profitably traded. Taylor performed testing of time series back in the early 1980s, when computer power and financial data was much scarcer and more expensive. I am excited to see what he has come up with, now that computers and data are a zillion times cheaper.

Another excelent book by Alex Clark

Fans of 1/72 scale armor rejoice! This book contains walkthroughs of builds of a Tiger II, Elefant, Tiger, Sturmtiger, and Jagdtiger. This is certainly not a beginner's book - even the easiest of the builds ends up being mostly resin after-market parts, and the later models have a large percentage of scratch-built components. The Jagdtiger includes a full interior that defies description. The pictures are better than the ones from the previous Panzer IV book - more large pictures, and the small ones are taken closer to the details, so you can still make them out. However, I would like to see more steps devoted to painting techniques, like masking and how he deals with tracks and other attached parts.

Detail pictures of an actual preserved Elefant are included in that chapter. A gallery of builds by other modelers includes a Tiger I, Tiger II and a Ferdinand interior. There is also a section on reference materials and reviews of available models.

Anyone with an interest in 1/72 scale armor or of modeling excellence in general should get this book. Any book by Alex Clark is going to find an instant slot in my bookshelf from now on.

This book is the latest title in the popular Osprey Modelling series (it's number 28). Aimed primarily at intermediate and advanced armor modelers, the book explores a number of Tiger tank variants in 1/72 scale (Braille scale, to some). Like all the books in the Osprey series, the quality of the photographs and writing is superb. Alex Clark does a wonderful job covering the intricacies of building many different Tiger versions (this is his second Osprey title) and his writing style is both instructional and easy to read. A careful reader can look forward to spending two or three hours enjoying this book and walk away with ideas for improving future Tiger projects.

A very good insight into a modelling career

This is a very good guide to how to make a career in modelling. The book also gives a great insight behind the scenes of the industry and the many different types of models there are-from 'Supermodels' to runway and part modelling. The book also looks at beauty and health(which is often a criticism of the industry). I think it is a good book for up and coming models as well as those(like me)who are just interested in the behind the scenes stuff! I bought the book for my girlfriend...and I haven't stopped looking at all the great pictures.

The book "Models and Supermodels" is "Fantastic!

Inspirational parenting support

I read this book during my daughter's first major illness. This was word-medicine for my exhausted body and soul, and many times gave me the strength and inspiration to face another day with energy and compassion for my child who needed me so completely then (and every day). Good support for those who are thinking about homeschool, and who question the effects of television and vaccination on our children's minds and bodies. Enlightened parenting at its best!

This book had a profound effect on my life!

I first read the book when I lived in Santa Cruz, CA where I eventually met the authors. Their simple use of language does not detract from the amount of love and faith which is evident in their stories. They are people with a lot of love in their lives and who have experience with healing, and they want to share both. This book gave me hope and sparked a belief in God which was not based on anyone telling me what to think. If you are looking for healing I think you will like this book! Barry and Joyce live what they speak.

Models, Myths and Muddles: Thinking Toward Survival
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-07
Like most reasonably well-educated, cogent homo sapiens I was fairly convinced that what I had been doing with my brain lo these many years was logical, critical "thinking." But Coralie Koonce's book "Models, Myths and Muddles: Thinking Toward Survival" has made me "think" otherwise. It was a bit disconcerting - not to mention humbling - to realize that the every-day thought processes I had adopted over the years and believed were effective, smart and uniquely mine were actually not - most of the time. This book was a mind-blower on so many levels - a revealing look at how we think and how we must learn to think if we are to survive as a nation, a society, a civilization and a species. Its content is extremely relevant in these most turbulent of times and should be required reading in every high school or college classroom in America. I could go into details about actual content but I would rather not make this review any longer than it needs to be. Besides, that's what book jackets, chapter headings and tables of contents are supposed to do for us, right? The book is very well-researched, balanced, enlightening and full of content-appropriate, timeless and often surprising quotations from an eclectic range of sources and kept me engaged from cover to cover. The only negative point I can make is a minor one. I would have preferred Ms. Koonce delve a bit more deeply into the subject of "context" since this is a big issue for me. Our national fondness for "sound bites" without context concerns me greatly especially in an election year.
But lest you are thinking, given the subject matter, that this book might be an intellectual author's lofty ego-trip, think again. It read more like an easy, open, warm, witty, intimate conversation with a wise woman who has had a life based on the same every-day experiences and relationships we all have. But it is Ms. Koonce's perspectives on these that gives the book its richness and charm. It would be a guilty pleasure, perhaps, to invite her over for tea and cookies some rainy Sunday afternoon and just indulge in the very human but lost art of conversation.

In the interest of full disclosure I must admit to having written more than a few published pieces myself but, while I am unappealingly jealous of Ms. Koonce's gifts as a writer, I look forward to reading the final two books in her series. This one is a keeper.

Creative Playthings: unique toys live-on in Linda Baker book

I was pleasantly surprised to see several of my toy concepts presented in Ms. Baker's book, "Modern Toys". As Vice President of Product Concept & Development for Creative Playthings of CBS Toys, in the late 70's, when the broadcast giant also delivered quality educational and learning toys and games, my group birthed what I now frequently grace the tables of flea-markets and yard-sales. One series, "Block Family", is represented in the "Who-Sit?" category, to which I quickly responded with patent details for Linda's "next book", which I sincerely hope she may produce. I grew up with many of the classics in her array, and applaude her for preserving, at least in print, memories for millions of youngsters, of a more simpler period in childhood-Americana.

A good basic toy reference

Review Date: 1998-12-29
This book has a selection of toy pictures from all the big toy manufactuers, with an extensive section on Fisher Price, both for little people and their earlier push toys. A great book to go to for reference when I am checking on a set's piece count or number. The color pictures are wonderful, but coverage can be spotty....that is, not all toy manufacturers and their lines are as fully represented as I would like them to be. Nevertheless, this is one of my main toy reference books. Feel free to email me if you would like to know how well a certain manufacturer is represented, and I will be happy to look it up for you.
