This is a marvel of engineering that will keep your child (and you) busy for hours and hours. There is such possibility for using your imagination here that it's one of the biggest bargains you'll get from a book of cut-outs - ever! I wasn't surprised that it won awards. I wish I could give it an award, myself. This is just what I've come to expect from DK Publishing!

Your girl will really feel that she has stepped back into another era in her very own house filled with Georgian furnishings. Playing with this toy will create great memories! Dream House is just all so feminine and pretty, you won't be able to resist.

Love it!

Exquisite little playhouse!

My three-year old daughter loves pop-up books, especially those featuring dollhouses [fairies, princesses etc], and this two-story Georgian house is truly a paper engineering marvel!

The book opens to reveal the house with actual lights, a formal dining room, a ballroom, balcony, courtyards etc. There are also some paper furniture that need assembling. Though there is no doll [the character's name here is Mary Beth], any paper doll can be substituted or any other doll for that matter - there are lots of opportunities for creative and imaginative play here that is sure to enthrall and engage young children, and maybe older ones too!

Ducati Twins Restoration Guide: Bevel Drive 1971-1985 (Authentic Restoration Guides)

Mick Walker has been into Ducatis for as long as I can remember. He had a dealership in the 60s and 70s, as well as being involved in the racing side. Now Mick and his brother Rick spend their time giving advise and supplying those hard to get parts at reasonable cost from Wisbech, Cambridge UK. Yes he is still at it. This book (I borrowed a copy) is a very comprehensive reference guide. It is not a workshop manual, it is a history book and a technical book in one. Chapters on various cycle parts, electrics, engine, carburation etc. Hints and tips abound ( did you know that there are 3 different types of Lucas Rita I did not - I bought the wrong one ). There is a half page devoted to petrol taps (petrol cocks) for example. This is a very comprehensive guide for anyone with a bevel twin it has an abundance of photographs (B/W) and much technical data. Excellent bedtime reading from a leading authority on things Ducati, Buy it,read it, and then keep it by your bedside .

Thorough and detailed

This is the book to have when you either need to check on the authenticity of a Ducati "bevel drive" twin cylinder motorbike or wish to restore one. (If the latter, and you wish to do it properly, bring mucho lire.) For such low production numbers, it's surprising how many variations of gadgets Ducati used to build these beasts. If you wish to make certain that your bike has all the proper bits for its serial number, you'll need this book. Incidentally, though Mick Walker writes (lots of) good books about motorcycles in general and Ducatis in particular, this book by Mr. Falloon is both more thorough and detailed than Mick's books on the same subject. I would compare this book in quality and utility to the excellent "Original..." books intended to carefully document collectable automobiles -- except that the photos aren't as lush.

Dynamic Econometrics is a excellent book of econometric modeling, this book is a mixture of econometrics and economic theory. The book covers time series (ARMA, VAR, Unit roots, cointegration) , econometric modelling of time series (encompasing, nested tests, DGP's theory) and Macroeconometrics (Macroeconomic Theory and Statistical methods) the book is an excellent bridge between Macroeconomic Theory and Econometrics.
PcGive, PcNaive and PcGets are excellent software for solving problems,in dynamic econometrics all examples maybe can be solved with this programs.

Anyone interested in modeling economic time series should read this book! Hendry presents a very good analysis of estimation, inference, and modeling. What is most important, he gives various examples. This is surely a classic in LSE econometrics and it helps a lot in a Macroeconometric course.

Economic Models of Climate Change: A Critique

A superb look at the limitations of all economic models
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-09
I assigned this book for my class on forecasting at Stanford University, and have been pleased with the results. It is a wonderful exploration of the limitations of all economic forecasting models, not just those assessing the economics of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It analyzes how these models treat consumers, producers, and intergenerational equity in a way that lays bare the myriad assumptions (most of which are not tested empirically) that determine the results. The book brings to bear the latest developments in information economics, transaction costs economics, increasing returns to scale, and the theory of the firm, and is enormously helpful for determining when economic results are credible. DeCanio makes it clear that "current [modeling] practice only hides the essential questions behind a technical facade," an observation that is in accord with my own experience as leader of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Forecasting group for more than a decade. DeCanio also analyzes the accuracy of energy-economic models in predicting prices and quantities, and finds their accuracy to be dismal, a result that will not be surprising to anyone familiar with this field. Finally, DeCanio's conclusions about the biases inherent in current climate modelling are important to note: all current modeling frameworks are biased towards overestimating costs for ameliorating climate change, and DeCanio concludes that economic theory is not now able to predict with confidence the economic impacts of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. If you are involved in debates about climate change economics at any level, get this book. Even if you are not an economist, reading the non-technical sections will teach you a lot, and will allow you to ask questions of those who confidently make assertions based on these flawed and limited modeling frameworks.

Saving Earth From the Neo Classical Economists
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2004-09-29
Did you know that according to economists, it would not be worth 6 cents per person to save the earth's economy from destruction 300 hundred years from now ?

Did you know that the models used by neo-classical economists to consider climate change have so many solutions to their equations that they cannot produce information useful to policymakers without being rigged to do so ?

Did you know that the assumptions then used to run the models either have been shown to be completely wrong or have never been validated scientifically?

Did you know that the energy models being used to project the economics of climate issues decades into the future have been wildly inaccurate in making much shorter term predictions ?

If not, you need to read DeCanio's book.

DeCanio rips away the fig leaf of objectivity from economists claiming to produce valid information for the climate change debate. Deconstructing their models through all their theoretical twists and turns, DeCanio reveals how their biases shape assumptions that in turn predetermine the outcomes of their analyses, a heads I win, tails you lose approach. DeCanio shows how these models, posing as application of the scientific method, with hundreds of equations that seem objective, actually are a classic example of `garbage in, garbage out'.

There is no court of malpractice to charge the neo-classical economists for their recklessness. But DeCanio's book serves as a warning: the results of the neo classical economic models of climate change put the earth's health at risk.

I agree with the last reviewer - this model is great. I bought the NIV with KJV add-in module so I can switch easily between the 2 versions. The large type setting is easy on "elderly" eyes - the screen is small but you only have to hit the spacebar to go to the next screen-full. With the Franklin Electronic Bible you can find passages or specific phrases quickly, so it is a fantastic help with everything from witnessing to Bible crossword puzzles. And it fits in most shirt pockets or hip pockets. A little pricey, perhaps, but worth it. Thanks to Him.

Love It, Love It, Love It.

I just wish I had this when I was young. I have been a bible student my whole life. But now that I am over the hill, I have such a hard time rememebering where my favorite verses are--now in a second or two I can find where they are in the Bible. In the Search area, you can enter or Bible verse or a word search. The word search will list all texts that have that particular word in them. Narrow the search by listing more words. Another plus is the text size. There are three sizes to chose from. If you have a hard time seeing, the large size is very helpful. I don't recommend the bible for just reading. It is mainly for studying. (well, it is also great for taking with you because it is so small.) Another big plus is the slot for another cartridge. I haven't use it yet but am sure that it will be a lot of fun. I would like to get the NIV version so that I can campare the two translations. If you get one of these bibles, everyone will want it--so make sure you keep good track of it. Or better yet buy two. You'll love it.

I am loving Bruce Sanguin's book - I have to rate it a WOW! I primarily come from the post-evangelical side of the emergent aisle, but hearing this mainline minister's creation-centered, Spiral-ly dynamic, evolutionary take on Christian spirituality is refreshing. While I don't agree with the author's every contour (nor, I think, would he want me to uncritically), I really appreciate how he synthesizes a host of influences from Matt Fox to Ken Wilber and shows how they've incubated in his congregation these past dozen years.

And can I say that the cover is *gorgeous*?

Highly recommended!

A Unique and Needed Work

Review Date: 2004-04-11
I lost the password to my old reviews some time ago, so now I am putting a few of them on my new string, so sorry for the repeat. I just want as many people as possible to read this book.

I have been interested in the Christian experience and understanding of God for many years now, and this is the best book I have found concerning the differences in trinitarian theology between Eastern Orthodox and Western Christians(both Roman and Protestant). I know that my statement is flawed if it's taken to mean that books alone and not that prayer, eucharist, love, and faith, etc, are needed to encounter the Trinity, so don't take it that way. But on an intellectual level, surely this book helps in may ways. I'll quote the jacket:

"This book examines twentieth century theological commentators (Barth, Rahner, Lossky, Florovsky) on the problem of the doctrine of the energies of God. Counter to existing trends in western theology, the author gives a positive evaluation of this doctrine and seeks common ground between the eastern idea of essence and energies and the western idea of the inner and economic Trinity. Though written from a clearly western perspective, the book argues the coherence of the eastern position, and that underlying both eastern and western positions is a common intention to say that the encounter with God is real, and that the primary ontological distinction is between God and creation."

This is worth the time to read over and over. Other books of interest will include reading the primary sources for Reid's critique. Brath's "Church Dogmatics", Rahner's "The Trinity", Lossky's "Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church", "The Vision of God", "In the Image and Likeness of God", and "Orthodox Theology". All of Florovsky's works are foundational, but most, if not all, are out of print. The works of Saint Gregory Palamas are available in translation and commentary in many forms. I have used Meyendorff's two wroks, "Saint Gregory Palamas and Orthodox Spirituality" and "A Study of Gregory Palamas".

Some other books to check out are "The Mystery of the Trinity" by Boris Bobrinskoy, Studer's "Trinity and Incarnation", LaCugna's "God For Us", O'Collins' "The Tripersonal God", and Dimitru Staniloae's "The Experience of God".

Being As Communion by Zizioulas is also one of the best books you may ever read on the subject. Enjoy!

A unique work which is balanced and very well done

Excellent! I knew nothing of statistics or probability until this book. It takes you through a crawl, walk, run of these needlessly feared subjects. The practical applications are uncanny. Although focused on engineering applications, any academic discipline would gain from this book. Serrano also teaches you the basic ins and outs of the powerful C based Maple mathmatics software.

Excellent! Even if you fear probability and statistics, you can learn so much from this book. Dr. Serrano provides a crawl, walk, run approach to probability, statistics, and uncertainty. Any academic discipline could gain from this book, but the examples used tend toward engineering and its applications. Not only will the reader gain a firm foundation on the subject matter, the latter chapters take you to the upper level of stats, probability, and modeling of the unknown. As a bonus, Dr. Serrano inserts helpful hints and example programs to use in the very powerful C based Maple mathmatics software.
