I believe that this book will be the one people will turn to to get valuable info. on the Barclay Transports & Cars. It must have taken the authors years to compile all the information in this book . If you collect Barclay's then this is a must have book .
The book starts you off with a brief history of the Barclay Manufacturing Co. and as the book progreses through the pages it gives up more and more detail of every known Transport and Car . The book is very well layed out with it's easy to understand no. system . For easy reference it has lots of color pictures to refer to .
Thank goodiness we have people who are wiling to do the work involved to compile such a book and get it to this high level .

I found this book highly detailed and very very informative. The authors not only did an excellent job of clearly explaining the differences between the 4 basic styles but showed all the many many colors , shades and tints .I especially liked and found interesting, all the little notes and stories of the background of how and why some of these changes came about. The high quality paper and clear photos make the pictures jump out at you right off the page. The photo effectiveness really shines thru, when it came to showing all the various tints and shades of the same color. The pictures were not only close and clear but very vivid. I especially liked the authors simple, straight forward and very effective way that they cataloged these various changes. This easy, open ended system, allows more additions to be included later when they are found. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. Kudos to the authors, for taking, what had to be a huge amount of man hours to bring this much needed book to the next level . I predict this will be the Barclay " bible " for identifying the small Transports.

Lawrence Hansen compiles The Basics Of Scale Modeling, a step-by-step photo guide to scale modeling for bare-bones beginners. The best models are tiny museum-quality replicas of the real thing: the art lies in capturing the element of realism of the real thing, and it's an art presented by The Basics Of Scale Modeling's techniques culled from FineScale Modeler magazine articles covering the basics. From setting up the initial work area and assembling the tools to planning a project for smooth success, this is a 'must' for any who would start on their first scale model.

A really good way to master Dinamic linear models
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-21
As a reader with an economical background, mathematical texts are usually hard to be followed. Nevertheless, dinamic models through bayesian forecasting are afordable with this book. Introductory chapters on the bayesian learning algorithm and univariate models rough out the kernel of the issue. Once you dive into the following more complicated chapters you can get lost but the main idea is got. To avoid getting lost, several readings are necessary. Finally, last chapters for non linear models, models with exponential distributions and MCMC methods are really heavy going but a light reading can allow you to get a general overview.

All in all, is a great workbook. The main drawback may be the lack of more practical examples to illustrate the theoretical concepts.

time series using the Bayesian approach
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2008-05-31
A Bayesian approach is a natural way to deal with time series data. You construct a model based on past data and prior information and use the model to predict future values in the series. When the new observations come in the model can be updated (model parameters reestimated) and forecasts can be updated. Most of the time series literature deals with the classical (frequentist) approach incluing the well-known book by Box and Jenkins on forecasting and control. This book provides a mathematically rigorous treament of time series modeling based on a Bayesian approach. Many common forecasting procedures including the Kalman filter are iterative algorithms that could be derived as solutions for forecasting based on a Bayesian model of the time series.

There is nothing new in this book for experienced modelers, but beginners will find a straightforward introduction.

This is an excellent book for the beginner or first time model ship builder. It contains detail plans with dimensioned drawings for two simple projects. It contains step-by-step instructions to ensure the beginner will be successful with their first project. The second project provides directions for making a modern sloop rig. Many sailors may be interested in how to model their own boat or a friend's boat.

Behavioral Game Theory: Experiments in Strategic Interaction (The Roundtable Series in Behavioral Economics)

outstanding textbook for behavioral economics
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-14
This book is an extremely well organized presentation of key theories and evidence in behavioral game theory, a subset of topics from the field of behavioral economics. I have often assigned chapters 1 and 2 in behavioral economics classes at Harvard and Duke, and recommended other chapters to students who want to learn about Learning theory. (I would cheerfully assign the other chapters if I happened to be covering those topics, but there's only so much you can squeeze into a 1-semester undergraduate course!)

The book has many strengths. First, Camerer is one of the Very Important Scholars in behavioral economics, and there are less than a handful of people (Matt Rabin) who could conceivably be argued to be more authoritative on the subject matter. Second, Camerer makes extraordinarily good use of summary tables, explicit sections/subsections/subsubsections, summary paragraphs, and the like to help the reader keep track of the details, and to quickly locate the particular details of interest. Third, the introductory chapter offers a wonderful and intuitive introduction to the field; I have often started the first class of a new semester by reproducing the experiments in the chapter as classroom demonstrations. Fourth, the appendices to the introduction offer a good overview of economics experiments and of game theory (no substitute for a full textbook on game theory, of course, but a good refresher, and enough to get the bare bones of the subject). I expect the reader will quickly find many other reasons to admire this book.

This is NOT a book for a casual read by a non-economist. It's a textbook, or a handbook for economists and other people with a reasonable mathematical background who want to see, in one place, the most important results in behavioral game theory (as of a few years ago). It's also designed to present scholarly research, which means the reader should be prepared for the scholar's willingness to leave a lot of loose ends lying around and NOT to claim to know the definitive answers to the questions.

If you are a lay person looking for a behavioral economics book for the general audience, you should probably look to Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein's Nudge or Dan Ariely's Predictably Irrational. All three of those authors are first-tier scholars and major contributors to the literature in their own right, and those books are written with a non-specialist audience in mind.

The required math knowledge to truly understand game theory is rather intense, and this book will allow one to put their knowledge to the test. However, the book also enables readers with limited math skills to appreciate and conceptually understand what behavioral game theory is, how it works, and the implications it has on future research in the strategic/behavioral theory camps.

Fascinating ideas - like a marathon for the layperson
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-12
I came to this book from a footnote in Peter Watt's new novel 'Blindsight'. As an older layperson, I can say that Metzinger assumes a background and vocabulary in philosophy that I don't have. But, he has a habit of summarizing and clarifying his points that gives you a thread through the discussion. It's been like an immersion course in another language, and oh the joy when you can grasp a concept or some of his ideas flash out at you. I can think of nothing else I've read in the past few decades that has repaid my hard work with so very much food for thought.

Being No One (and note the specific grammar: it's not 'Being No-one) is more than worth the work. Highly recommended for anyone interested in how consciousness relates to brain activity.

Finally.The monster can be tamed.

This book is very hard to review. There are many reasons for this. One is that I may be biased: I think this may be the most important book written about consciousness in the last couple of decades. Then there is the fact that the book is enormous in scope, (and not far in size either- it is 650 pages long), brilliantly written and argued, and succeeds in doing something few other related books do. Reading this book makes you feel that consciousness has been explained. It makes you feel that the monster has been tamed, that progress can be made, that those who believe there can be no sensible exxplanation for consicousness are just wrong. Now in reality, it is not obvious that consciousness HAS been explained. But one feels like it has. And this is why I think this book is superior to Daniel Dennetts ¨Consicousness explained¨, arguably the book regarded as the most significant and influential philosophical contribution in the field. After reading Dennett, few believed consicousness had been explaied. Even few felt like it had. This book is unique, and I believe it is a matter of time until its impact is made apparent.

Metzinger wanted to show that the self can be explained in subpersonal terms, using representational analysis. He quickly noticed that since Selves are usually consicous entities, that he would first have to do this for consciousness. Imagine that. Having to explain consicousness to try to explain the self. And so, the book could be seen as divided in two. First, a theory of consicousness, and second, a theory of the self. I am by far more impressed with the former, although undoubtedly the latter is extremely interesting as well.

Before proposing a number of theorethical entities supposed to play the explanatory role, Metzinger carefully analyses the conceptual tools necessary to understand the problem, and formulate solutions. Thus, he analyses the concepts of representation, mental model, phenomenal presentation, etc. His account is also almost completely positive; that is, he almost does not stop to defend his ideas, or to analyse other philosphical theories. He focuses on arguing step-by step for a conceptual edifice that may lead to the explanation of phenomenal states in terms of non-phenomenal objective relations. This part of the book alone seems to me to be one of the strongest formulations of a representational theory of mental states.

Metzinger, then, is able to answer the question of what makes a mental state a conscious state. He argues that mental states have representational, and these states can have phenomenal content if the representational states meet some constraints. Consciously experienced content is content of an active phenomenal model, and phenomenal contents are all representational. The various constraints are the conditions that the representational content must meet in order for it to be a phenomenal content. Examples of these constraints are globality (integration into a global whole), activation in a window of presence, transparency.

The constraints are what makes these ideas powerful. Metzinger analyses the constraints in representational, phenomenological, information-processing, functional and neural-implementation terms. He gives what could be seen as necesary and sufficient conditions for a mental state to be a consicous state. He presents a theory of consicousness. And a very sensible, conceptually simple, naturalistic, and powerful one.

After doing this, he shows how his analysis can acomodate some abnormal phenomenons like blindsight, agnosia, and neglect. He then does much of the same last steps with the problem of the self. He defines concepts like subjectivity, self-hood, self-models. Then he proposes theorethical entities like the phenomenal self model, or the phenomenal model of the intentianality relation, to try to show how the conscious self might emerge. Here too metzinger argues that self content must meet some constraints to be considered phenomenal self content. He also tests his constructs against cases like anosognosia, multiple persoality, lucid dreams.

In sum, Metzinger deals with everything from mental representation, to content, qualia, subjectivity, intentionality, self, and does it in carefully ordered and convincing ways. Metzinger is a philosopher, and the theory is mostly philsophical. But few philsophers include such careful empirical and neurobiological observations. Few philosophers have such knowledge of the extensive literature. Few are as convinced of the central role that scientific objective theorethizing must play.

I must repeat that it is in no way evident that consciousness is explained in Metzingers book. But if there is a book that will set the conceptual framework that leads to such an explanation, it is this one. It is virtually imposible to explain his ideas concisely, and to understand them one has to follow his discussion completely. Therefore, I can do not much but to recomend that anyone interested in consicousness read this book. The book is quite technical and it is fairly long, however I believe that this should not stop the lay reader. The book is in my opinion simply too important. I have reviewed close to 100 books now, most of them on consicousness. I have said on numerous times that such or such a book is a must read. This one is the one I think more closely matches that description.

Tony Metze has taken leadership books to a new and exciting level. While most leadership books are boring and slow reading, this book provides a new concept to combine tired and worn out principles into a new way of thinking. Tony expands leadership into Christian leadership principles for today. He tells us that "Christian leaders need to be able to articulate their call to service and their feelings of humility before God." Then he explains how to do that by using scripture examples of Moses and Jesus and their leadership styles. Tony's Fifth Frame shows us that God is the center of Christian leadership where we work our way from "Doing" through "Becoming" into "Being" with God as our perfect leader.

Much-Needed Ministry Model is Here!

Having been in ordained ministry for ten years, I have read all manner of books about pastoral leadership. While seminary did offer some study in this area, I have searched long for such a practical guide to understanding the minister's role within the church. The Reverend Dr. Metze offers a helpful graphic before the first chapter which allows the reader an overview of his thesis. Metze centers his leadership model on God, God's word and wisdom, and God's call. Then Metze shows how our discipleship and discernment, steeped in humility, must be a balance between four different types of leadership: symbolic, political, structural, and human resource-centered. In explaining his thesis, the Rev. Dr. Metze is thorough and very Biblically centered; at the same time, however, he explains each concept using stories from his personal experiences as a pastor. I would recommend this book to a first year ministery student as well as to a seasoned professional who wants to clarify his or her direction in ministry and leadership; this book would also be helpful to lay leaders in the church.

This book laid the foundations of integrative neuroscience independent of silly metaphors and reductionistic assumptions. This in turn led to a new understanding of the functioning of the brain by showing that integration is feasible. The contents dwell on the biophysical properties of neural networks. The contents dwell on the biophysical properties (e.g. dendritic structure, ionic channels, and synaptic transmission) of neural networks. The overall motivation is to show that biophysics of computation is an inconsistent paradigm when dealing with neural networks by showing that integration from microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic levels is feasible. Therefore this book laid the foundations of integrative neuroscience independent of silly metaphors. Chapters 1-2 constitute an introduction to the subject and a historical survey of neuronal modeling, respectively. Chapters 3-5 encompass the cellular level with an emphasis on nonsynaptic transmission, and computational models of single neurons from the retina and amygdala. Chapters 6-7 characterize the physico-chemical mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity in biochemical networks and synaptic transmission in axonal networks. Chapters 8-10 form the hard core of basic theory of small-scale biophysical neural networks.Chapters 11-12 deal with mesoscopic theories of hippocampal neural networks. Chapter 15 serves as an advanced overview of the numerical methods in neural modeling of networks.A number of problems are included at the end of each chapter to give a more in-depth appraisal of the contents, and each chapter ends with some predictions in relation to future developments. A highly recommemded book!

The book starts with a little history of the doll from French and great vintage pictures are added (through out the book) to show how things were back than and there are instructions how to make the right embroidery stitches that were used. Patterns are actual size and easy to trace. Instructions are easy especially when you're an more experienced sewer but also the novice can have an easy start sewing because there are all kinds of patterns to find in this book. From very easy to complicated (more pattern pieces, pleats to make, put trimming on etc.)you will always find the right pattern to start with.
The pictures of the fashions to make, are the size of one page - 9"x12" - so all kinds of details are there to see. What can I say but this is a wonderful addition to your doll(pattern) books and I'm sure you'll love it! Good for hours and hours of reading and sewing pleasure.

And don't think that only the prices are updated in each issue. Ms. Foulke also swaps out most, if not all, of the photos, so each new edition gives you more visual examples to refer to. I recommend this or any of her books.
