I'm in the market to buy a Model A Ford, and I wanted to learn everything I could about them. I researched the available books and this one seemed to get the best reviews. The great reviews were justified. A very complete history of the car with great color photos. I highly recommend this book to any Model A enthusiast.

Much of the information about the creation, manufacture and selling to the Model "A" Ford is available in other Model A books.
However, this book is more complete, more detailed and the pictures, now in color, are superb.

For those of us that are FANS of Henry Ford's Model A, this is a GOOD book to have in your collection. Even for those of you who are not fans this is a GOOD book!
A good complimentary book is "Henry's Lady". This book tells all about the Model A from begings to it's "End of the line". Both books would be GOOD to have in your library!

Elizabeth "Lizard" Flanagan who is a sports fanatic wants more then anything to go to Wrigley's Field with their friends Mary-Anne, Zach, Ed, Stinky, and her brother Sam, to see their favorite team, The Chicago Cubs, play baseball. When she gets the opportunity to go, she isn't able to, due to the fact that the trip would cost a fair amount of cash. She has already owes her parents money and can't receive another advance in allowance. She had already spent a lot of money on a speed odometer.

Meanwhile the spring pines 0fashion show is taking place at the town mall, and 2 models from each school are chosen. Each participating model receives money and one model is named "Supermodel". Someone secretly enters Lizard in the contest she becomes a finalist. Now Lizard, who has terrible stage fright, has to parade around strange people in a swimsuit, and a dress!

She is so worried that she will have the hiccups during the show, just as she did while giving an oral report in the fourth grade. The only upside to being a model in the fashion show is that she will be able to pay her parents' back. Also, she will be able to go to the baseball game with the money she receives.

Also, her boyfriend Zach goes through his own set of fears while playing the part of Dracula in a school play. Lizard jumps to conclusions about him liking another girl, who is another cast member in the play. She thinks this is why he is asking so strangely all of a sudden. Will Lizard loose her boyfriend? Will she make it through the fashion show? Will she relive her fourth grade hiccupping disaster?

This well written book can easily be related to while reading. I thought about different people and memories while reading this book and its different events. It is exciting and comical with appealing characters. My favorite character would have to be either the fashion-show director Mrs. Landers, or a snobby classmate named Lisa St. George, who is also another contestant in the fashion-show. Even though they have practically opposite personalities. I liked Mrs. Landers because she accepted Lizard for who she was no matter what happened. Also she didn't try to re-create her as I thought she would. I thought Lisa was amusing. She was obsessed with herself throughout the book and took a random disliking to Lizard. This book is a distinctive page-turner. I think many different people would like this book, probably people who like sports, adventures, fashion, and comedy. I hope anyone who reads `Lizard Flanagan, Supermodel??' enjoys reading it as much as I did.

THE MERCEDES OF DOLLS

Review Date: 2001-08-17
Born in 1895 in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, Madame Beatrice Alexander was the daughter of Russian immigrants who rose to become America's premier doll maker. As a child she was known as Bertha, but soon took what she considered to be a more socially acceptable name - Beatrice. This name change was but a harbinger of her determination to excel, to rise above what she considered to be humble surroundings.

Her story is well documented and lavishly illustrated in this keepsake volume. Included are numerous full-color photos of the famous Alexander dolls.

Early on Madame Alexander adored her step-father, Maurice, emulating his love of doll making and doll repairing. He is responsible for this country's first doll hospital located on the Lower East side of New York City. The family lived above this business.

With the outbreak of World War I and America's ban on German goods, including the dolls which were the family's best sales items, it seemed their business was doomed. But Beatrice and her sisters would not accept this. They put their heads together to try to determine how to make dolls without porcelain or kilns. The answer was, of course, cloth toys. Their first success was a Red Cross Nurse doll. Beatrice was the creative member of this team, coming up with ideas and issuing instructions on making her concepts a reality.

Building upon their success the Alexander Doll company moved to a large space in the late 1920s. It was not long before their efforts were rewarded with an order from FAO Schwarz.

The Alexander Alice In Wonderland doll debuted in 1930. Today, in an updated incarnation, Alice is still one of their most popular items. There were soon Scarlet O'Hara dolls, bride dolls, Queen Elizabeth II dolls, Eloise dolls, and more.

Today, the original issues of many dolls are prized items in collections throughout the world.

"Alex" is among the latest creations - she's a very modern miss in an extravagant gold gown or capris and crop top. Her wardrobe is extensive as is her following. But, to many, a Madame Alexander doll is the Mercedes of toys.

The historical perspective is a real plus.

The photos of Lia Sargent's dolls in this book are, indeed, beautiful, but the real draw is the way Ms. Finnegan, the author of the book, relates Alexander's life to what was going on in the world at the same time. Wonderful historical perspective, which is very unusual in a doll book!

Wonderful new book a MUST

This book is excellent! I found the life of Madame Alexander very interesting and read this book from cover to cover. I hated to put it down. If it were not for Madame Alexander we might not know Scarlett O'Hara or Barbie as we know them today. We have a lot to thank her for...you will be amazed! I also enjoyed the photographs of the dolls. Lia Sargent, the leading expert on pre 1965 Madame Alexander dolls did an outstanding job on this book also. The photographs and photo captions show Lia's work is perfection..something Madame Alexander would be proud of. This book will be loved by generations to come. Doll collector or not, this book will leave you saying "WOW"!!!!

This is a great little book for those interested in running a martial arts buisness or simply wanting to improve their approach to coaching/teaching.

This book focuses on what really needs to be changed if you are considering operating your own martial arts studio. It outlines what the old method was, why it is no longer effective in meeting the needs of today's clients, and how to make the changes necessary to provide a positive training environment that will also be successful as a business venture. If you want to make a living doing what you love, this book is NECESSARY. All meat, no fat, with an easy-to-read format that makes it easy to breeze through (I finished it in a couple hours). But there is enough solid conceptual material to warrant re-reading many times. Rodney's credentials are impeccable, his experience in the coaching arena is well-attested, and his strategies are all laid out for you here. I strongly recommend it.

Awesome coaching book for 21st century.

I found this book to be both insightful and thought provoking. Mr. King demonstrates a level of sophistication in his thinking about business and coaching that is absent from other martial arts business books and programs. Even better he presents his ideas in a style that is easy to read and understand.

If you own a martial arts school or are otherwise in the business of martial arts, I highly recommend you read this book. Sports coaches and teachers are also likely to find some nuggets.

In the Martial Arts GAME, Rodney shares his philosophies on what make effective coaching and how your clients can get the best out of themselves.

This book would be a great addition to ANY coach, whether that is martial art, fitness, yoga, pilates or sports where you want to get your clients engaged in the process, have them achieve their goals, and have their life benefit directly from their activity.

Very thought provoking, and well worth a read....... then put it into action.

There are lots of books about mathematical modeling, and many of them cover biological systems. But no book I've ever seen even comes close to the quality of this beautiful work by Edelstein-Keshet. So what is it that makes this book so special? First of all, the book is both accessible and self-contained. Just start at the beginning, and you're guaranteed to learn A LOT of math. Second, the style of writing and the way in which the author presents the material is utterly beautiful. It is impossible NOT to understand, but the material is not at all 'chewed out' for the reader. Third of all, the book really encourages the reader to pick up pen and paper, go out there and MODEL something; dozens of inspiring and high-quality exercises and research projects are to be found throughout the book. Fourth, the various techniques are easily applied to non-biological problems. Fifth, the book will help to gain insight in the qualitative aspects of biological phenomena. What Peter Atkins is to chemistry, Edelstein-Keshet is to mathematical biology. Sadly, she is not as widely known. Get this book while you can!

This is a work to keep close at hand during those child rearing years. the Mentoring Mom is a book to be turned to often as parents face the day to day struggle, confusion and struggle that is so much a part of raising a family. The writer leads the reader into understanding that raising kids is a big job, is not an insurmountable job and is a job to be savored.

The reader is offered suggestions for letting others and God do some leading in our own lives, an important quote I especially liked was added "Parents of good kids take too much credit and parents of struggling kids take too much blame" is offered. While I didn't have the quote when my own children were teens, the notion was well entrenched and carried me through those years with a minimum of upset.

the Mentoring Mom will be a welcome addition to parental personal reading list, the therapist shelf, school and public library and for all who hope to make a positive difference in the lives of another. the Mentoring Mom is a book to be read in entirety and then kept close at hand for study during times of particular need or situation.

Over the years, Hollywood movies have stamped on the layman's mind an image of a typical American family as a rubber band stretched by stressors of self-centeredness and unbridled individualism. This stamp is particularly lasting in case of teen folk. As we read Jackie Kendall's The Mentoring Mom (New Hope Publishers, Alabama, 2006), the Hollywood's stamp is washed away and the American family appears in a new light-that of love, care, and trust. Surely you would need a mentoring mom.

Jackie Kendall addresses caring mothers in her book, sharing the eleven images (what she calls stamps) she imprinted on her children's lives-images that model Christ- to help them grow up in God's image. Kendall tells simple, true nonfiction stories from her own family life and asks the readers `Questions for Reflection' at the end of each chapter. It is her excellent writing style, lively humor, and prodigy of construing thoughts in the most beautiful sentences that makes her book a wonderful gift to moms and everyone else.

The Mentoring Mom carries invaluable lessons: loving the Lord by way of loving fellow human beings, the difference between mere learning the word `God' and knowing God intimately, and above all, the true spirit of a real family. An indelible lesson of the book, of course, is the vitality of `wholesome grief'. In Kendall's words: tears do not bring back the one who has died, but tears do bring us back to the life that must be lived without the ones who have died.

As an author Jackie Kendall's words work wonders. The reason is not hard to figure: you can actually feel the persons, she tells of, in their own voices as if the author has a miraculous force by which she transforms herself into the soul of the one she is talking about. You can identify your life's instances with Kendall family's history of love and benevolence. This is indeed an achievement.

Jackie Kendall's book is a must read because we all need Kendall's wisdom's light to arrive safely at our destiny of peace.

Encourages with doable steps

The next best thing to living next door to Jackie Kendall is reading her books. The Mentoring Mom is written from one mother's heart to yours with an abundant dose of grace.

"In what ways do you want your children to grow up to be like you?" Kendall asked. "Is mom modeling for her daughter the significance of a consistent, daily growing relationship with Jesus through God's word?" Are we more concerned about the condition of our aging bodies than the care of our souls?

Button-popping proud mother of two grown children and president of Power To Grow Ministries, Kendall recommends mothers stamp eleven images on their children including a love for God, a praying woman, a student of God's Word, your soul's emotional health, loving people to Christ, your heart's passion, a noble life purpose, your teachability, your perseverance, reckless abandon to God, and the image of an adapting spouse.

The Mentoring Mom encourages readers with doable steps like spending seven minutes daily with God. "Do you know how many seven-minute increments we've got in a day? Every day you have 205 chances for seven minutes with God," Kendall said.

Journaling has been essential for Kendall. Through journal entries, each chapter in The Mentoring Mom shares generous glimpses of her victories and struggles over the past two decades of her own parenting. Chapters end with questions for reflection.

"I am often amazed that parents can be so thorough in teaching their children about hygiene but neglect the hygiene of the soul," Kendall penned. She writes that a soul is cleansed by confession and forgiveness. Kendall is a good forgiver. The power of her ministry comes from her personal journey. Growing up in an abusive family, Kendall was a teen when she became a Christian. She has done the brave work of facing her issues, allowing God to heal her wounded heart, and learning how to forgive the unforgivable.

Kendall has the best teaching on forgiveness I've encountered. An exuberant and genuine speaker, her tapes are available from her website, Power To Grow. Her video, "How to Avoid a Bozo" is a must see for parents and teens. Based on Kendall's intensive study of the book of Ruth, this video outlines the difference between a Bozo and a Boaz. Teaching your boys to be a Boaz and your girls to avoid a Bozo is a vital part of being a Mentoring Mom. - PeggySue Wells, Christian Book Previews.com

Moms Who Wish to Be Mentors

Full Disclosure: I did not read this book, my wife did. After all, she's the one who really wants to be a mentoring mom. What follows is gleaned from her thorough reading of the book:

You're a mom and you wish to produce more than just the average good kid-you wish to pass the slippery torch of faith to your next generation. Well, if that's your goal, then Jackie Kendall, author of Lady in Waiting, has produced a wonderful tool to help you get that done.

Mentoring Moms offers 11 concrete areas of life in which Moms can thoroughly train their children to love God. Dad's have a role, too, but Mom's have a unique calling and a special gift in passing down the legacy of faith.

Jackie is both biblical and practical. Her words don't induce pangs of guilt and shame, but rather encourage and uplift with practical tidbits of wisdom. She gently sprinkles the Scriptures over everday life situations.

No matter what stage of life your child is in, Mentoring Moms can help you grow in your most important responsiblity: mothering. I would buy this book for yourself and for the important moms in your life.

In this work by author Jackie Kendall we are gently guided to improve the most important job of our lives, being a mom. The author encourages all mothers to open their hearts to be mentored by God who in turn will give to them inward wisdom to help them mentor their young, and I believe it works.
Ms. Kendall gives us 11 principals to guide us, and as the author explains, as we use these principals we are 'stamping healthy imprints' on our children as they grow.
Her words are, "children learn best by examples." Certainly a truth we all need to remember. Her principals are Scriptural and wise.
A few examples of her 11 principals are:
The Stamp of Teachability; The Stamp of Passion in our Daily Lives, and my favorite, The Stamp of Perseverance." Carefully she takes her time to explain the meaning of each, their importance in you and your children's lives and how you may implement them to help you and your child. In her explanation of these we find wonderful stories, examples and Scripture.
If you hunger to make a positive impression on your children, leave them a lasting legacy they will carry with them all their lives; this work is for you. Well written, informative and enjoyable.

Author Joe Poyer leaves no detail overlooked. His work, in my experience, outshines all others and could be called "definitive" on the subject upon which he has written. I highly recommend The Model 1903 Springfield Rifle and Its Varitiions as an invaluable addition to the library of the firearms enthusiast.

A great book about a great rifle

A great reference for survey sampling results. Derivations are mathematically rigorous and not for the faint of heart! I would not suggest this book for beginning grad students, as it is lacking somewhat in readability.

This book provides a graduate level text for survey sampling based on models including superpopulation models. It is a very up-to-date and modern approach and includes material on resampling methods as well as all the classical material on random sampling, stratified sampling and sampling proportional to size. They also provide methods for handling regression problems in the finite population context and even provide names of available software packages. Important topics (particularly for censuses) such as measurement error, nonresponse and imputation methods are all nicely treated. The book contains some practical examples and several classroom exercises.

Ok, this book is for readers who know already something about Sampling Theory. It gathers everything about the subject. When I bought it my intention was to get something about Sequential Schemes and it has a good hold of it. Although Särndal's(et al.) particular way of writing be quite different than the others, it is an excelent rich reference for Samplers and Non-Samplers.

control for the probabilities of inclusion!

This book has certainly changed my life, and probably will eventually turn the entire empirical economics priesthood on its head! This idea - that the way the sample was created is just as, if not MORE, important as how the estimate was created - is so obvious it's revolutionary! It means survey researchers have to pay close attention to inclusion probabilities from now on. I have to say I already consider the work a classic.

If taken as a course with a good instructor, the book is approachable and very applied. I recommend it to anyone interested in doing economic, political, social, market, environmental, or population research. (Don't be afraid of the math - it's just the most elegant way to write the ideas down.)

I recently bought this book before I boarded a flight to Japan and found once I started it, it was hard to put it down. Exciting to read; Ms. Shanebrook has a light and airy writing style that pulls the reader into her life as a model and world traveler. The photos are high quality and very beautiful. Well worth the price.

PS It sounds like the last reviewer must have been a jilted high school boyfriend of pretty Ms. Shanebrook! Cheap Shot!

I enjoyed this book very much and I think you will too! The pictures are nice too! Nice work Jillian.

PS: I'm the only boyfriend Jillian had in high school as far as I know, and I think she is wonderful and so is the book, so any bad reviews were not from me! I had to clear my name. :-)

Thanks :-)

I read lots of travel books and I loved this one!

Shanebrook's book is a fantastic read! What a relief to read a travel book that isn't so damn boring! I loved all the stuff about modeling and it was exciting to read about Asia. I've done lots of travelling and normally only read the mainstream guides, but it was great to get an insider's take. I found some great restaurants in Thailand, and have recommended the book to my friends who not only like to travel, but like to have fun. People who travel like adventure, normally, and anybody who likes adventure will loves this book. Great photos!

An inspirational and adventure-filled book

Jillian Shanebrokk's "Model:Life Behind the Makeup", was a tremendously enjoyable read. This book is filled with adventure and excitement and allows the reader to experience all the breathtaking and exotic places Jillian Shanebrook visits through her extremely vivid and sensual writing.
It is a tale about truly going after your dreams and reading this book reminds you and inspires you.
A popular model in Asia, and voted one of the top two covergirls in Indonesia, Jillian Shanebrook shares this luxurious world with us but describes it through her down to earth, humorous, and perceptive eyes. Her voice is unique and irresistible. Her style is free and playful.
Jillian Shanebrook never takes herself too seriously but she does take her dreams serously and this is contagious. I didn't want the book to end but reading it made me want to go out live adventures like her. I can't recommend this book enough.

Such a fun read!

This was a great read. I brought it along with me on vacation and I read the whole thing cover to cover before I got home. It's a behind-the-scenes look at a model's life, from her start in Indonesia to traveling all over. The model, Jillian, seems very down-to-earth and introspective about life. Her story makes me want to have my own adventure...
