Grow Up America! belongs in every home in America. It's candid, direct, concise and to the point. Be responsible for your actions, your feelings and your thoughts! For others? Absolutely not. For you? Absolutely. Dr. Hurd gives a whole different meaning to "selfish" and how putting yourself first dramatically improves the quality of your life. His book is clear, easy to understand, and practical. It's refreshing how he speaks out about issues (that I've only been willing to complain about) with fortitude, backbone, and honesty. His chapter on "Personal Responsibility" really surprised me! I consider myself a very responsible adult (who can't stand when people portray themselves as "victims," helpless, etc.), and he brought to my attention how I was playing a victim by feeling resentful (blaming others). Ouch! So much for the joy of enlightenment. I now realize that if I take care of myself first and choose to be happy in whatever I'm doing, there's no reason for resentment. I've also learned that when feelings of resentment surface (or any negative feelings), and I take responsibility for them, they're neutralized. When I "own" my feelings, the feelings can't own me. Bottom line: Grow Up America! hits the nail on the head: being responsible = being happy. Check it out for yourself! You'll be glad you did.

Finally - The Rational Alternative

It was absolutely wonderful to read a 'self-help' book that was based on rational principles. I've made the mistake of buying some of the most popular self-help books on the shelf and was totally disappointed to find them, at best, full of mundane and obvious advice. At their worst, they offer up suggestions that the universe will provide for you if you believe it will, that you can do anything, regardless of the facts of reality and that just telling yourself how great you are will cause self-esteem.

We all know deep down that none of this is the right advice - it's just the easy advice. Dr Hurd gives the right advice. He teaches us things like what really causes self-esteem, how to examine emotions and put them in their proper perspective, how to love, how to be moral and much, much more. This is a book for the rational thinkers who want to deal with the world in a realistic manner, be responsible for their own lives and achieve their own happiness.

There is also some excellent information on how to help your child grow up, for the parents out there.

This is a book that will challenge you to think rationally and come up with your own solutions, not just hope for a solution from the cosmic universe.

I highly recommend this book. It is always difficult doing business in strange countries and purchasing property must rank as one of the most difficult and demanding transactions to undertake. It is also necessary to get it right the first time as it can be very expensive to rectify a mistake.

This book is ideal as a primer on purchasing property in Turkey. It explains the whole process in great detail and includes a lot of other interesting information - such as the different regions and cities, getting around the country, finding a reputable agent and lawyer as well as dealing with food and customs. It is more than a list of facts and details and is a surprisingly good read as a memoir...

Really this book is ideal for travelers generally as well as being essential for prospective property owners in Turkey.

I was quite pleased with the information that was in Pat Yale's book. I moved to Turkey in 1990 and it would have been very helpful to have had it at that time. She covers all the bases. I highly recommend it to anyone considering living in Turkey. She had a very gentle way of stating the difficulties that lie in getting things done in Turkey that are very different from what we experience here in the US. I recommend it for those who know people living in Turkey. It will give you a very good picture of life there.

This book is an excellent historical review of the computer and telecom technologies, and it is a must-read for anyone interested in the convergence of technologies, surely the most important phenomenon of the next century. The book's historical analysis of where we've been puts into perspective where we are going.

It describes incredibly detailed the birth and the growing up of this great band, a few years almost day-by-day (not to mention the very nice pitures).

This book, if you can find it, is really a must have for the true JD fan. There is quite alot more than just lists of Joy Division concerts and photo. There are some excellent anecdotes and insights from the band members and from thier friends and family, as well as some very well-written and captivating essays by the author. The book is best when the difficult transitions of Joy Division into New Order are shown. When someone asked Peter and Barney before an early New Order show "Where's your singer?" to which they replied "Oh, he's hanging around in the kitchen"

A fine guide to one of Scotland's richest historical sites.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1998-11-02
This book is the latest of Mairi MacArthur's books on her family's native island. It is rich in accurate, well-researched detail, supported by her extensive knowledge of Iona. This has been gained through academic research and through her close acquaintance with the island's residents over many years. Colin Baxter's photographs give an excellent impression of Iona, though generally when on its best behaviour in the summer - it can be a wild place at other times! The island is of interest to tourists, academics and also Christian people wishing to explore this small and incredibly beautiful island, and to see for themselves the place where some of those rugged Celtic saints brought their faith from Ireland to Scotland in the sixth century. The pictures and story of the Abbey show how it remains very much a living home of the Christian faith. It will surely also appeal to the generations of Iona emigrants who have settled in the USA and Canada.

Excellent text and marvellous photography - a real treat!

Review Date: 1999-04-29
This is one of the few books that does justice to Iona, an island that has enchanted and captivated visitors for, literally, thousands of years. It is truly difficult to convey the elusive magic of Iona, that combination of physical place and atmosphere which draws so many of us back, time after time. Colin Baxter needs no introduction to those familiar with landscape photography in Scotland, and his work here is up to his usual breath-taking standard. Mairi MacArthur has a solid grounding in the history of the island, and of Argyll and the Highlands, as well as a sympathetic but honest perspective on islanders, past and present. As a guide during your visit to Iona, the book is first-rate. The maps and diagrams are simple but clear and full. The explanations and descriptions help you understand what you see around you, in terms of geology, ecology, human settlements, animal and human life - and including of course the ancient religious centre. It is readable and useful for those less familiar with Scotland and its life and traditions as well as for those of us who live here For those who have visited Iona, it is a lovely reminder. For those who have not yet had that privilege, this is a taster which should have you itching to come.

Jesus Living in Mary: Handbook of the Spirituality of St. Louis Marie de Montfort

Excellent and most thorough exploration of Montfort
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.

This book is simply the best presentation of the infamous True Devotion to Mary, however you will enjoy this book if you like:
- the works of St. Louis de Montfort (quotes thru out book),
- books that quote saints, the Bible, the Catechism, Popes (lots from JP II) and other popular and authoritarian figures
- books that balance traditional Catholic thought with a current Church outlook on spirituality (true to form without the uncomfortable fanatical overtones found in some popular piety books)
- books that will enable you to develop your relationship with God and expand your knowledge of Church spirituality and history without being boring or dry
- books that are composed of several authoritarian authors (including Rene Laurentian) to protect the reader from being trapped by one author's bias

Over 1200 pages long, this book for me is a deep well that I will be able to dip into for many years to come and walk away refreshed on a daily basis.

Arranged by over 90 topics - faith, hope, love, Jesus, Mary, family, Church, consecration, etc...

I'm convinced that outside of scripture no book will be more helpful.

Essential to Montfort Spirituality

Review Date: 2007-03-24
This books is an excellent source for deeper study/understanding of Monfortian spirituality. I found the consecration chapter to be a very good overview of the Saint's view on consecration to Jesus through Mary in language that may be easier to understand to the modern reader (not a modernist twist).

The book is very much compiled with quotes from scripture, saints, popes, etc., a great look into the universality and historicity of devotion to the Blessed Mother.

Highly recomended to those preparing or living the consecration.

This book offers just what kids love--hands-on activities that allow them to be creative and have a lot of fun while learning about other cultures. Normally it takes teachers inordinate amounts of time to research and design such activities. Carol Peterson has done that and wrapped it all up in one neat, ready-to-go package. If I were still teaching, I'd definitely use this in my classroom.

An Valuable Resource for Teachers and Parents

Review Date: 2004-03-13
Author Carol Peterson has created a winner in this guide to creating living history events for children. Peterson takes three historical themes--ancient cultures, Native American culture, Colonial America, and Pioneers--and deftly uses a combination of crafts, games, recipes, legends, and songs to give children experiences they'll never draw from a textbook. Teachers, home-schooling parents, scouting leaders, and camp counselors will find this book brimming with creative projects. "Jump Back in Time" can be used on many levels--as a resource for school-wide or organization-wide events, classroom-level activities, or with individual kids. Parents will find great ideas for doing a little "stealth educating" while playing with their kids. As an educator, I highly recommend this book.

Knights in Armor gives an overview of the history of knighthood from its beginnings in the early Middle Ages to its demise. The book also explains the feudal system, women's roles in the Middle Ages and quick history of the Crusades. Especially wonderful are the full-page color photographs of people dressed in medieval clothes and armor depicting scenes of yesteryear. I highly recommend this book for anyone, not just children, who are interested in the Middles Ages (if only for the photographs).

We can taste/experience and even be reconstituted with God's life
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-23
God has the highest form of life in the universe - uncreated, eternal, infallible, indestructible, ever fresh, and ever new. We human beings can receive this life, grow in this life, and even be reconstitued with this life in our human spirit (Gk. Zoe), and our soul (Gk. Psuche), and our body (Gk. Bios). A great issue will come out of the maturity of this divine life in all of us as a totality - the fulfillment of the eternal plan God has for man and this whole universe. He will accomplish what He has planned! Why not join Him for His heart desire? Read this book with an open heart and an unloaded human spirit. May Him richly bless each reader of this book with Himself!

The real meaning of life is God Himself.

Review Date: 1999-12-22
The book unveiled the true meaning of life in the whole universe, and gave a crystal clear explanation of created life and uncreated life, which was classic and enlightening. After I had read this book, I just started to realize that I had an uncreated Life in my regenerated spirit, which was the very God's life, and which was a person guiding me to serve and worship Him in God's ordained way.

The book is wonderful, and even more wonderful thing is that the book helped me experience the living God in spirit and in reality. Life is a mystery, but it can be experienced through believers' regenerated spirit. Once we accept the redemption and salvation of Lord Jesus Christ, He not only forgives our sins but also gives us His Life and Nature to make us sons of God and to guide us into another realm to enjoy Him, serve Him, worship Him, and be one with Him. It will be excellent to read Witness Lee's The Experience of Life after this book.
