A fascinating 137 pages of teaching plans for The Miracle Worker by William Gibson conveniently stored on a CD Rom refreshed my outlook on how to teach The Miracle Worker. With each Act there is pre-reading material, study questions, vocabulary (in an assortment of ways), and tests in different formats, such as, multiple choice, short answer, and essay type questions. Plus, there is an exhaustive list of writing ideas and discussion activities to promote critical thinking. In addition to all of this, there are games, activities, and puzzles for various levels of students. An impressive CD that transformed my approach.

Beautiful Book

Review Date: 2006-01-08
I just got this and looked through it for the first time, page by page. The decision to buy this from a secondary vendor here at Amazon was easy, as I had recently seen the newer version in a bookstore for five times the price and was impressed. I can't make a good comparison between the two versions because I only casually skimmed through the newer one at the store. It seems the newer one might have a handful of additional houses, but I can't be sure.
It is mainly a picture book and a beautiful one at that. The photos of the older houses, from the 1950's and 60's, are almost all black and white, which is probably to be expected. The ones from the 70's and later are almost all color - very nice.
Floorplans are included for about half of the houses, although some of the plans are incomplete, with a level missing, usually a basement level or some such.
The accompanying text descriptions are of the usual architectual type, ie, how the architect(s) sought to achieve this-and-that in relation to one-or-the-other, etc.
I would have liked to see complete floorplans for all the houses, the lack of which tempts me to give only four stars, but since not everyone cares about this, I'll give it five. The book delivers as advertised.

I have read this book time and time again (from the library) and it is excellent. The photographs are exquisite, and I, being compulsed to read every modern architecture book available, thoroughly enjoyed it.

This book shows readers how to have the marriage of their dreams. It provides expert advice on financial planning for two, sex, juggling two careers, religious differences, the holidays, legal decisions, household tasks, and more. That's not all, along with expert opinions, it includes worksheets, questionnaires and checklists to follow. Her book is organized in a very simple manner making easy for reader to practise. I am hoping that the author will write updated version for years 2000 and on.....looking forward to a new book and continuos education.

This is TRULY the greatest planner ever! I actually bought one of these before I was even a mom because a friend of mine had it and I loved the layout. I have bought one every year since! Each page is a full week with plenty of space to write what you have that day as well as any reminders. There is also a "To Do" space on each page and perforated sides for grocery items and weekly menu. I LOVE it! I honestly cannot think without having this planner right beside me...it keeps me on track in life!

I happened across this book one day at an office supply store. Glad I did. I can now keep track of doctor appointments, play dates, birthdays, phone #'s and so much more. I was constantly loosing the pieces of paper that I would jot notes down on. I can't wait to get the 2009 version which just came out. I like the little rip out grocery list feature as well. Plenty of space for any busy mom. Oh and no writing in your own calendar dates.

A must read for any woman! I still return to my 1993 addition of this book for straight-forward informaion on how a woman can handle her own finances. The format is easy to read, with titles, bold print summaries, and questions. Ms. Leonard, whom I've never met, feels like a friend!

No-nonsense, useful advice for women in or near retirement
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-07-03
Of the slew of personal finance books for women the past few years, this is the only one that sounds like it was written by a woman who didn't already have a fat, profitable investment portfolio, her dream house, and Prince Charming as her mate. Nearly all of the other books were written by people promoting their financial consulting businesses (until they got too rich to bother with that, like Suze Orman, although she's good, too). Leonard is a lawyer, and the legal counsel for the Older Women's League (OWL), a terrific organization.

Leonard writes in a down-to-earth, no-nonsense, but friendly voice, and gives specific, useful guidance about things most of would never know even to investigate -- much of it about Social Security benefits for widows and divorced women. If you're either of those, worried about becoming one, or just want to be proactive about protecting your own future and security, this book mandatory reading.

It was reissued the year after it came out, but is apparently out of print now. It deserves to be updated and republished.

This is a reprint of a house plan catalog from 1912. These books are actually exact reprints of original plan books from the turn of the century (1880-1925, roughly). Dover adds little or no modern explanations, just presenting the catalog as it was. So when one looks to review these books, one isn't really judging the modern-day publisher, or editing, or writing. The only modern element is the accuracy of reproduction- in some cases, if pages in the originals that Dover found are damaged or torn, that page is reproduced in the original with the tear, smudge, blot, or hole showing. So to judge the books, one has to compare each one to others of its kind, and then to decide whether the material in it is thorough and complete according to the standards of its time. Since there are several dozen of these catalogs published by Dover, we have the basis for such a comparison.

Stickley and the Craftsman school of design are well known. Many people own bungalows, or admire them even if they don't own them. What getting a book such as this does, is give a person insight into the details of the lifestyle of the time, of the philosophy of the architects/designers, and so on.

This particular plan book is one of my favorites. It includes an introductory essay by Stickley, an essay on "The Relation of Craftsman Architecture to Country Living," and several other pieces. "The House of the Democrat" by William L. Price is also included, a thoughtful essay which would give anyone pause when looking at today's McMansions. Price says that a house should not embarrass one's friends; it should be ample enough to contain them, simple enough to leave them unoppressed, and with enough artistry to please and lead them, if they wish, to build one likewise. This essay is worth the price of the book!

One of the features of this catalog is that along with the exterior view and floor plan of every house, there is an extensive written description. For many of the houses there are drawings of the interior, with suggestions for furnishings. There are also examples of what types of light fixtures one might use. There are several cement houses, a fad of the time which should have caught on more than it did, as it is an economical and sturdy material for building a house. The written descriptions, in some cases, even include alternate ways to finish the house to save money or to adapt it to a particular type of location. Most of the illustrations are drawings/paintings; there are a few photographs, but not many. The drawings of the interiors include wallpapers and curtains.

There are a few houses in the book without indoor bathrooms, which is not unusual for the period, but most have a full bath, and some have two bathrooms. Almost all have extensive built-ins: sideboards, bookcases, benches and settles, shelves.

There are a few plans for log houses, for summer camp houses, and even for rural schoolhouses. There's also a section on gardening and landscaping; one on pergolas, one on the details of concrete house construction, and one on how fireplaces work for heating and ventilation.

In sum: this is more than just a plan book; the only bad point is that if this is your first exposure to plan books, then the subsequent ones you read will seem plain and lacking by comparison. Definitely should be in the collection of anyone interested in turn-of-the-century architecture, restoring houses, or adm

Took me 8 months to finally get this book in my hands, and it was worth it.

Easy to understand and easy to build working wooden locks. I have the first book 'Working Wooden Locks" and have made all the locks in it. Sure would be nice if he would do another book with more/different locks. Be careful buying the second book. They are ONLY 2 Books. Fist Book: Working Wooden Locks, Second Book: MORE Working Wooden Locks. The cover picture was changed on the first book and has caused some confusion.
I Love these 2 Books and Highly Recommend them.

Review Date: 2002-07-17
I would highly recommend this book to serious historians as well as amateurs alike. As far as I know it is the only book that covers American post war policy toward Germany in such detail. Also, it brings us informations that are surprising and shocking as far as communist influence of the highest political spheares in the U.S. is concerned. I am of the eastern european heritage, and I thought myself to be well learned in the subject of history, especially european history, yet "the morgenthau plan" unveiled events completly new to me and I belive to many readers concerned with the subject. In short the book seems to be bottomless well of information on the subject previously avoided by other authors which fact makes it that much more valuable. Lets hope more books will follow.

Dietrich Explodes the Myths of an Often Misunderstood Era
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 8 total.
Review Date: 2002-08-26
What makes Dietrich's book of special interest is its emphasis on the development of the Morgenthau Plan(1945-48) -- the precursor to the Marshall Plan (1949-53). Although drafted largely by a relatively unknown economic policy wonk named Harry Dexter White,in fact it is Roosevelt's Treasury Secretary, the venerable Henry Morgenthau,Jr. who is credited with orchestrating the implementation of his eponymous plan.
Unlike the subsequent Marshall Plan which historians credit with Postwar European recovery, the Morgenthau Plan was in fact a punitive measure designed to extract a goodly portion of "vegeance" from the German people by literally ensuring that the wrecked German economy would remain so.
Dietrich, drawing on contemporary historical sources, makes a convincing argument that initial US Postwar policy towards Europe -- particularly economic policy -- was largely crafted by Stalin and his fellow comrades in the Kremlin via Harry White (most probably a communist/marxist sympathizer). Dietrich also highlights the fact, again using sources from extant literature, that implementation of the sinister Morgenthau plan resulted in mass starvation, rampant disease, and death in Germany and other parts of Central and Eastern Europe during the period from 1945-48.
In short, Dietrich's work paints a picture of postwar Europe that is considerably drearier than most accounts of the period. It also affixes blame for much of the suffering in Europe during this time squarely on the shoulders of US policy-makers. From my own personal viewpoint, Dietrich's book revealed that some of the historical figures who are generally regarded as men who
respected human dignity --- were not so kindly after all. Readers will find FDR and Truman, among others, were enthusiastic supporters of the Morgentahu plan and harbored a deep animosity towards the German people. In short, especially for younger generations of Americans who weren't yet born during the last great war of the 20th century, this book is a real eye-opener.

This book is not going to get dusty on the shelf. It is a real resource--for art teachers, social studies teachers, home schoolers and anyone else who wants to use art to teach world culture (or conversely world culture to teach art). The lessons makes sense. The art projects are doable. This book had been well thought out. It's also been tested with real students. It is ideal for teachers who want to do multi-cultural education and not just talk about it.

What a wonderful way of teaching. Bravo!

Susan Hogan's book is a fascinating exploration of several different cultures through their art, their customs, geography and history. Her insight into the nature of the different societies brings a deep understanding of how art has been interwoven with the needs and rituals of that society. It also points out the need for us to use our hands, our minds and emotions - expecially in this electronic age. It brings us back to ourselves, to make these things with our hands. I have worked with children of different ages for more than a decade. I find the students really enjoy the easy to do projects that help them produce beautiful articles they can actually use. What a wonderful way of teaching. Bravo!
